Can I develop applications on Linux PC, that run on Mobiles.
If, yes then I seek link which guide beginner for such
applications.

Is there anything other than Java (in FLOSS), which may be
used for Mobile Applications.

Linux Toys

Linux Toys... are interesting I/O devices for Linux PCs and are used to
amuse and entertain. Each article on this web site presents a short
tutorial and application note on an I/O device.

The Code... You won't find RPMs, ./configure, or even Makefiles. We
strive to expose the device protocol in as few lines of code as
possible. To do this, we sacrifice some functionality and some error
checking. Most programs fit in a single file and are built using just
gcc -o.

The articles usually describe things which are available at your local
electronics store, but some articles describe do-it-yourself
construction projects. (Be ready with a wire-wrap tool!)

These are just toys .... they are 'for the fun of it' and are not
always meant to solve real-world problems. If you do find a business use
for any of these projects please let us know.

A $10 Linux Answering Machine:

The LinuxToys.Org website has a new article on how to
use a popular, low cost winmodem as a Linux based
telephone answering machine. The article is at:

open source software extensively for web-based applications. UCT built

released the resulting package under the GPL

project to migrate to the open source Sakai Project learning

many reasons, including the Sakai community, interesting tools and
applications emerging for Sakai, and of course the cool technology. On
the social software side, we have recently started a blog service for a
staff development programme (though we expect its application to be
much wider) using plog http://www.plogworld.net , and are at various
stages of using 4 different wikis for different purposes - swiki,
Wikka, mediawiki and a Sakai wiki. We're also interested in eXe for
offline content editing.

THOSE FREE CDs IN YOUR HAND, THEY'RE ACTUALLY WORTH MILLIONS

Value of Debian GNU/Linux. The paper Measuring Libre Software
studying the size of the source packages in Debian 3.1 calculates the
size of sarge (close to 230 million lines of source code), the use of
the various programming languages in which the software has been
written, and the size of the packages included in the distribution. It
also estimates cost to create something on the scale of Debian from
scratch with a classical and well-known cost method (COCOMO) to be
over 8 billion US dollar.

Speaking at Brainshare, the company's annual European user conference in

the next version of Windows will be significantly higher than migrating to
desktop Linux. "The cost of migrating to Windows XP to Vista will be higher than
the cost of migrating to Linux and that will push migrations to Linux," Messman
said.

MY EDITOR-FRIEND-via-email (and the occasional phone call) Ramdas S is
paying increasing attention to non-proprietorial software (they mostly
call it just 'Open Source' in Bangalore, where he's based). So much so,
that his DEVELOPER IQ magazine -- http://www.developeriq.com -- is
probably the Indian general-computing magazine with among the most
amount of Free/Libre and Open Source Software content in it.

Good going. If you too appreciate it, please drop him a line at
ramdas@... and let him know there *is* a market for
FLOSS-related information.

So, one good turn deserves another. This email tries to
draw attention to the FLOSS-related information
in the September 2005 issue of DeveloperIQ, available
           on many newsstands across India.

QUOTE... UNQUOTE: Most of the Linux gurus I know have been advising me
for the past five years to use Debian [GNU]Linux. I must confess that I
did try installing a Debian 2.x distribution, but it turned out to be a
nightmare... I was petrified by the thought of running a Debian-based
distribution on my newly acquired computer. However, I must confess that
installing and running Mepis (or SimplyMepis 3.3) was a very smooth
experience. While searching for software for the new Linux distribution
on the web, I managed to discover a lot of progress made on Debian-based
distributions.... -- Ramdas S, editor, DeveloperIQ.com

o Windows developer's guide to Linux development: On Windows it is
likely that you will be using one of these four languages a majority of
the time: C/C++ (Visual C++ included), C#, Visual Basic and Java. Delphi
comes fifth in the list. In [GNU]/Linux it is a little different. You
will see that most development happens on C/C++. Java comes a distant
second. Then, you have a host of developers working on scripting
languages such as Perl, Python, PHP, Ruby and others. Almost all
languages have some kind of port on [GNU]Linux. So no one is really left
behind. However, whether these ports are good enough for professional
development is another question.

Flash for Linux). Nvu -- http://www.nvu.com -- is a fairly good HTML
editor. Also Quanta Plus and Blue Fish. Other tools like LAMP, Ruby,
Zope, Java and Mono.

o Six [GNU] Linux GUI toolkits compared: Tk, GTK+, Qt,wxWindows, FOX,
Swing. "A Windows developer migrating to Linux will be overwhelmed by
the choice of GUI toolkits available. It is important to make the choice
depending on the size of the project, target platforms and, of course,
the language of preference."

A Microsoft advert on the last page asks developers
"can you catch up with the future?" It asks them to
"create the next killer application using the forthcoming
development tools in Whidbey". And, it adds: "Microsoft
will not own Intellectual Property associated with your
application. It is yours to keep and market as you choose."
Property or people first? The difference shows!

A Frenchman, and maps ... in the South Pacific

Franck Martin [1] is a Frenchman based in the South Pacific. (You might
have noticed his sense of humour on the trip to Angkor Wat.) As a
Wikipedia contributor, he's described as someone "checking mainly the
pages of the Pacific Islands and updating when neccessary. Promotion of
wikipedia in Pacific Islands." But what's more interesting is his
Tikimaps [2] work.

http://www.iosn.net/events/fossap-2005/blog/franck

Mapserver, says Franck, is a tool, for "bringing data to all
stakeholders via Internet and Opensource Technology". It promises the
tools for e-government, good governance, transparency, sustainable
development, asset management, disaster management and security....
provided we have the political will for that.

To see what's possible, visit some of these sites from the distant (from
us!) South Pacific islands of Tonga [3], Fiji [4], Tuvalu [5], Kiribati
[6]. Franck sees many advantages in using Free and Open Source software.
These include sustainability, licenses (Internet licences are
expensives), software support, no "black box" phenomenon (where we don't
understand the technology we use). It also allows you to rely on
standards and support many file formats (not vendor dependent). It is
reliable. And secure too, provided the administrator cares for it.

For more links on what uses Tikiwiki can be put to take a look at the
Tikiwiki Community Portal [7]. Uses include uses in educational context
[8], using the mobility features of WAP browsing or for use with a PDA
[9], and, of course, Franck's interest of maps [10]. -- Frederick

I got a chance to go to Scientific Publishers in jodhpur and did a priliminary
discussion with the them. He looked quite interested. But before we go for
something like this, let us identify people who are willing to contribute
papers/writeup, editorial support, etc.

We need to invite people for this, form a proper Editorial board, work out the
financial modalities involved. Over this weekend I will do some homework on a
few more publishers. If possible can you also find out what's the scenario in
Jaipur. There are a few good publishers like Pointer Publishers, Printwell
Publishers and a few more which can be contacted in Jaipur. Probably a phone
call will do initially.

I also request all the members to please come up with suggestions. This has to
be a team work. Let's all discuss and work it out.

Cheers,
-Tarun

Than's an excellent idea Himanshu. There are a few ways this can be done.
1. By calling for write-ups and then editting a book which can be published through a good publisher.
The theme od the book can be Open-source and education. There are so many learned members in our group and I am sure we can get contributions. This will of course need lot of time and will have to be an organized and coordinated effort. I have been thing about this for quite some time. Hi Tarun!

I liked the idea very much. Its the right approach I think. We need to
make younger ones aware
of open source and free software idea. What they take sincerely at
graduation time (that too at
technical institutions), should be taken at a tender age of _teen_. I
sincerely believe in it. Can
we work out on some sort of text that discusses the opensource and
free softwares in detail.
We can at least try distributing these texts at local schools so that
they can atleast get pinned
up at the student support/notice boards. Can we do this?

Thanks and Regards

No doubt, this is worth an effort. Its true, India and china are the largest base for virtually any OS. Correct me if I am wrong. I am proud that my 12 year old cousin is not  using windows. He used to see me work on my linux machines since he was 9 and has been playing games on linux since then. Now, he creates his homework slides using open office on his new machine that his father got for him. And not only him but one of his friend also seems to interested in linux. With this __good__ example, I am sure we are heading in just right direction. Ain't we?

Yes, Google Talk is a good news. But unfortunately, all google products have
only windows clients. The google desktop search is very nice search tool, but
unot yet available for Linux file system. And now comes Google Talk.

However Google Talk is however a little feature deprived. There is already a
very good and succesful service for internet telephony available. And better
still, it has a fully functional Linux client. You must have already guessed
what I am talking about. Yes 'skype'. I have used it and I feel it was very
good. Voice quality was superb.

BTW, here is something related which might interesy you all:

Hi all!

Greetings

Human being is a social animal. Its something that we have always been taught
and something that we feel now and then. As we stay together, we tend to develop
a culture. We all, linux users, have brought linux to a state where we
can really call
it as our culture. We are helping each other, sharing our ideas, our knowledge.
We have our own way of doing things which is common in all of us. Whats left?

What do you feel?

Anyways, read this:
http://os.newsforge.com/os/05/08/02/1536234.shtml?tid=2

It discusses something that I said above. Hope you will enjoy it.

Thanks for a great link Himanshu. That was a nice article telling a lot of
things in the offing.

One thing I found particularly interesting was the new concept of Kernel
numbering and release. And it was nice to hear that video fidelity is on the
agenda. That I feel surely needs attention. Though I am able to play my DVDs on
Linux, it lacks the refinement.

It was crazy how Intel gave away laptops to people solving trivia. But was quite
hilarious to read that the Intel guy Dough Fisher was giving a presentation for
Linux on a Windows platform and how it displayed "Windows XP has locked your
Desktop" resulting in loud booing by everyone. Such a cliché that.

Cheers
-Tarun
