Hey,
I got a new Laptop, and they would only sell me it with XP. Annoying. Now, nearly a year has passed and I'm getting itchy for Linux again. Getting nostalgic for security. So I'm planning to do a partition and run a dual-boot. I only wanna give 10-15Gb to Linux (the hard-drive on this thing ain't that big, and windows can be such bloat-ware), so I'm pondering what to get. I had Mandriva before, which was good. I'd happily go with that again. But then going with the same thing just cos that's what I did before feels a bit unadventurous. Does anyone have any other recommendations? What are the favourites nowadays?

I'm looking for something:-
1) slim (like I said, wanna give Linux about 15Gb. maybe 20Gb MAX);
2) which can play CDs without giving me all kinds of hell - Mandriva used to play them silently unless you used this really crappy player which would only play one track then stop and wait for you to pick another... >:/
3) with Mozilla, firewall, and a decent Open Office, obviously...
4) DVDs would be nice too...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try booting with a live cd distro and see if the
problem persists. Also check your network connectivity
with the live cd.

If you face the same problem then you might have a
hardware problem. Try booting machine with network
cards disabled.

Hello Dear

I am facing problem with linux installed on IBM Server. I am using CentOS 4.4.
Previously it is working fine on this machine. But from last 10-12 days I am facing problem regarding login from root or any other users. It takes username but did'nt ask for password and m/c hangs (no response). after few minutes it gives error ips 0000:01:06.0:  Resetting controller. after this no response from m/c for hours. Please suggest me what is the problem either with hardware or OS. I have installed the OS 3-4 times but same problem occurs.

Waiting for your reply. Please reply on my email id also.

Okey...
Found the problem... adsl-start is not _messing_ with your default route...

_before_ your do adsl-start type the following...

# route delete default

this will remove the default route to 192.168.1.1 that you currently have...

then do

# adsl-start

and you have internet ....

Okey...
Found the problem... adsl-start is not _messing_ with your default route...

_before_ your do adsl-start type the following...

# route delete default

this will remove the default route to 192.168.1.1 that you currently have...

then do

# adsl-start

and you have internet ....

Hi,

can you ping your gateway...???

please attach the output for

# route -n

and if you can ping your gateway
then can you also send the output for a traceroute

# traceroute 202.54.1.18

Your phy. connectivity seems to be working, but there seems to be some
other problem in the middle

you can also try to stop your firewall by issuing the following command:

/etc/init.d/iptables stop

once you have done that issue the command

# iptables -L

you should get an output matching the below...

>>>>
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Hi,

Seems that your system is not able to resolv hostnames,
try pinging an ip address...

# ping 202.54.1.18

this will ping a VSNL IP address, if you can get replies then you need
to check your

/etc/resolv.conf file...

should look something like this

# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 208.67.220.220
nameserver 208.67.222.222

Hi,

Seems that your system is not able to resolv hostnames,
try pinging an ip address...

# ping 202.54.1.18

this will ping a VSNL IP address, if you can get replies then you need
to check your

/etc/resolv.conf file...

should look something like this

# cat /etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 208.67.220.220
nameserver 208.67.222.222

Hi!
I am using Mepis Linux 6.0.

Unable to connect to the net using BSNL broadband.

Modem purchased UTStarcom/ut-300RU

Downloaded rp-pppoe-3.5.tar.gz from bsnl website and installed the
gui based client via shell with following settings as described on
bsnl site.

Ethernet Interface: eth0
User name: amit
Activate-on-demand: No
DNS: Do not adjust / server (tried both)
Firewalling: MASQUERADE( tried with firewall off)

Adsl start connects to the net but when i try to connect to any
website i get the following message

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.mepis.org.

     * Check the address for typing errors such as
           ww.example.com instead of
           www.example.com

     * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
           connection.

     * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or
proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Tried other site but getting the same message.

asdsl status, ifconfig and running mozilla from shell as root show
following message

Ubuntu, I must say is a wonderful distribution. Installing softwares on ubuntu is a breeze. Ubuntu is based on debian but debian ,at the core, doesn't do somethings that ubuntu does and does it fantastic. I lately installed Ubuntu when my Mandriva distro was gone. I am really enjoying Ubuntu and the great GNU/Linux at the core!!

that of a CXO, our team will connect with you immediately.

Who all are going to speak at LinuxAsia 2007?
*********************************************

Klaus Knopper (Knoppix), Brian Behlendorf (Apache and CollabNet), Dr
Negroponte (one-laptop-per-child programme), are some of the
international technology Gurus who have confirmed. We expect 3-4 more
global luminaries to be there--their confirmation is in progress.

Any facilities for out-station delegates?
*****************************************

We have tied up with 'hospitality partners' who can assist you in
getting best deals for travel and stay. If you need this support,
simply select that option while registering.

What is LinuxAsia trying to achieve this year?
**********************************************

The goals that have been laid down for LinuxAsia 07 are:

Goal #1: Promote open source driven innovation so that India can
showcase a minimum of 20 globally recognised OSS projects at LinuxAsia
2008.

Goal #2: Accelerate the adoption of Linux and open source software by
highlighting their advantages, sharing success stories, and discussing
strategies on how CXOs can gain advantage from both "open source" and
"proprietary" worlds.

Goal #3: To provide a platform where other organisations with
OSS-related agendas can hold their own sub-events and network with the
entire community.

So, we request you to register, participate, and let us know how we
fared in achieving those goals.

Cheers!

Hi Himanshu,

Let me clarify. I didn't mean hardware issue with your DVD drive, what
I meant was that there are some drives which don't have proper support
under Linux. Like my laptop's drive does not let me run Freespire or
Linspire. I later on found out that the drive is not supported forthe
way grub in these distros is configured. So I have a hardware issue
that way.

Regarding upgrade I guess that should not be any problem. As long as
you choose to upgrade, there should be no issues whatsoever. And
Mandriva offers an upgradation option. Upgradation will however be a
very time consuming process. Can take as long as 4 hours.

I hope this helps
Cheers
-Tarun

Hi Tarun,

Had this been a DVD hardware specific issue, I can't understand why nero is
able to burn? Any ways I would like to use Mandriva 2007. But I have a
problem,
I have a pretty good amount of "compiled" software installed on the current
installation. "/home" directory is fine as it houses on a separate
partition but
all other (like root, usr etc) are on single partition. If I install
2007, I would loose
the installations, which I don't want to! Any work around for that?

Please send me the 2007 DVD if possible. My address is

Hello All,

The forthcoming issue of LFY would carry a story on the following:

Is the war really against Microsoft?

The article would focus on whether OSS world is actually fighting
against proprietary software at an ideological level. Or is it that it
remains a battle against Microsoft? We would like to focus at the
various levels on which this antagonism between the open source
evangelists and believers on proprietary software shapes up. Is the
discontentment against Microsoft only to the extent of patent issues?
Or that Microsoft is just a mere player, while the FOSS community is
fighting at the much higher level of psychology...

We value your suggestions and comments. So, any idea you would like to
share with us is most welcome.

Please write to us at sujata.banerjee@... with a CC to
atul@..., before 10th November,2006.

The best responses would be published in the Jan 2007 issue of LFY.

Looking forward to your responses.

Thanks,

Hi Himanshu,

You didn't mention which DVD burner frontend were you using on
Mandriva LE 2005. I am pretty sure it must be K3B. The problem sounds
DVD hardware specific. I have used the same version of Mandriva on my
laptop but never had an issue.

Moreover, Mandriva LE 2005 had several issues with other things as
well. It was the first Mandriva, that is the one which changed from
Mandrake. Mandriva 2006 was good but also had some serious issues with
diferent things. Now Mandriva 2007 is out. I am using it for quite
some time now and find it pretty tweaked. I would recommend that you
go for an upgrade to Mandriva 2007. It came out free on DVD media with
LFY magazine couple of months back. I can copy it and sent it your way
if you want. Try this newer version and I am hopeful your DVD problem
might get rectified as well.

Cheers
-Tarun

Dear all,

I am using Mandriva 2005 Limited editions on my Acer 3003 laptops.
Since the very begining I am facing troubles in burning DVDs. I am
able to successfully burn CDs but its not the case with DVDs. The
driver either fails to read the DVDs and when it reads it
successfully, OS says Input/Output error.

Is anyone of you facing same problem? Why is it happening and is there
any solution to this? The same DVD I can successfully burn on a Win$
session.

Thanks

Regards
