Well Girish,

I couldn't get Kinternet for PCLOS. The package could not be found. apt-get couldn't get the package. In the mean time I tried every thing to get pppoe run. But things don't seem to work. I have tried different parameters while running adsl-setup, but it simply does not work. The same computer does fine on my office network. It works fine on while trying to use BSNL BB over WinXP. So I think there is no issue with ethernet card either. I am clueless.

Anyone?

If your PPPoE connection is configured (i.e dsl bridge is

keep your IP Address static. make its setting DHCP, since your modem
assign it a ip address when it get connected. So a LAN is created and
modem (which is actually working as router) work as gateway.

Any problem feel free to ask. I have connected my laptop to Internet
at many of my friends BSNL broadband connection, using OpenSuse. It
always work.

Hello everyone,

Sending a mail to the group after ages feels good.

I am facing a problem with setting up BSNL Broadband on my Linux Laptop. I am running PCLinuxOS 2007.
I have tried adsl-setup to configure rp-pppoe client. But it never connects me to broadband. I can see eth0 up but the ppp0 client does not connect. The modem supplied by BSNL is ZTE ZXDSL 831AII. It is in bridging mode. Works fine over WinXP.

Can anyone help me get connected to BSNL broadband on my Linux machine?

Cheers,
-Tarun

Dear Readers,

To begin with apologies for posting the October 2007 Sneak Preview
rather later.

Now, were were we? Yes! I'm sure you know that virtualisation is the
latest buzz. And therefore we've dedicated our October 2007 issue to
detailed articles on various Free and Open Source virtualisation
technologies to give you an idea of what's the reason behind the
"buzz". Following are the five articles you can check out in this
special issue:

* A Hitchhiker's Guide to Virtualisation, where we briefly cover the
technology and how hardware assists come into play. Then, we try and
analyse how Xen can take advance of a virtualisation-capable processor.

* Xen Live Migration Using iSCSI Target: Here we show you how to
successfully migrate a live Xen virtual machine from one physical
server to another, without interrupting any service.

* Virtualise with Bochs and QEMU: In here we try and analyse how to
use two easy-to-follow technologies, and have tried to avoid too much
technical jargon - it's as simple as follow the instructions and set
up a virtual guest OS in no time.

* Spartan Virtualisation with Lguest: So, who's heard of Lguest? It's
a mare 6,000 line virtualisation solution that has been integrated
into the mainline kernel, and you can get a sneak peak once Linus
releases keenel 2.6.23. However, since we couldn't have waited that
long, we straight away went ahead with an RC release to give you a an
idea of what's coming.

* High-Speed Virtualisation with KVM-How it Works: Well, KVM was the
first solution that was added to the mainline kernel back in the days
of kernel 2.6.20. Here we try and find out wot's ...uh the deal with it.

The October issue of LFY has already hit the stands! So if the concept
of virtualisation intrigues you, then we can assure you this issue
won't disappoint you.

Klikit-Linux is a non-formal project oriented on developing a modern,
free, user-friendly and fun Linux desktop. It uses the well known,
award winning KDE enviroment.
Klikit-Linux can run as a LIVE-CD on practically any PC (x86), and can
be installed to your hard drive in just a few minutes.

What was interesting about it is STOREHOUSE. The Klikit-Linux
Storehouse is a free, easy, one-click on-line service to install and
remove linux programs (packages), libraries and drivers. It is
basically a sofisticated apt-get web frontend. Because it is based on
apt-get it does not depend on a centralized server, all the packages
are pulled directly from the repositories listed in your system's
sources list. The advantage is that the software will always be
compatible with your system, and will always be up to date. At this
moment it is under very heavy development, and it is still not
complete

Guys, for some time I have been testing Freespire. And Before I did that I even went on to buy Linspire to see how a commercial distro works. That was for sheer curiosity. With Linspire (which earlier was Lindows) was good, but I could feel it to be too Windowish. After using Linspire 4.5 for just a few days (precisely less than a week), I dumped it. But Then came Freespire.

On April 24, 2006, Linspire announced its own project named "Freespire".[4] The new Freespire distribution was announced by then Linspire President and former CEO Kevin Carmony. This follows to the model of Fedora Core being supported by Red Hat and the community since 2003. Novell had also started a similar community project by the name of openSUSE for its SUSE Linux product line in the second half of 2005.

Freespire is a community-involved, Linux-based operating system that combines the best that free, open source software has to offer (community involved, freely distributed, open source code, etc.), but also provides users the choice of including proprietary codecs, drivers and applications as they see fit.

The distribution is a Debian-based, community-driven and -supported project tied to the commercial Linspire distribution. Freespire includes previously proprietary elements from Linspire, such as the Click N' Run (CNR) client, while other elements, which Linspire itself licenses but does not own, like the Windows Media Audio compatibility libraries, remain proprietary/closed source. Consequently, there are two versions of Freespire, one with the proprietary/closed source libraries, and one, called Freespire OSS Edition, that includes only open-source components. Freespire has a number of in-house programs written in Haskell and O'Caml, such as its ISO image builder, its hardware detection and autoconfiguration, its package autobuilder and "Debian library", and also the programs managing the CGI.

Unlike Linspire version 5 and earlier, Freespire does not enable the root account by default. Instead, it gives sudo rights to all members of the admin group. This is due to the fact that it is based on Ubuntu as its base.

Freespirs's strenght also resides in CNR (or more appropriately CNR.com), the Click-N-Run software management service, and it is free.

CNR.com is a free one-click software delivery service designed to standardize the process and eliminate the complexity of finding, installing and managing Linux software for the most popular desktop Linux distributions, both Debian and RPM based.

With CNR.com you get the most extensive free resource available anywhere for desktop Linux software. Search from tens of thousands of Linux software programs, packages and libraries by title, popularity, similar software, category, Who's Who, or function, and with just one click install the software on to your computer. The question that crops up next would be "Which Linux distributions does CNR support?" The answer, as of now:
  1. Debian
  2. Fedora
  3. Freespire 1.0, 2.0
  4. Linspire 5.0, 5.1, 6.0
  5. OpenSuse
  6. Ubuntu 7.04
Freespire should be given a try to make your own opinion. Check it out here:
http://freespire.org

Cheers

Hey Brad,

Try Freespire 2.0. Does the name ring a bell. IF yes, then it is
because it has sprung out from the Linspire project. Linspire is a
purely commercial distro. I don't find it any different from MS
philosophy-wise. Though Linspire is impressive. But a lot of new
developments took place. The heart of Linspire -CNR (which stands for
Click-N-Run) has now become a free service. Though commercial Linux
softwares are also available at CNR, but that is not too bothersome.
Thne Linspire initiated a community driven project, totally free
called Freespire. Now recently Freespire 2.0 has come out. It is
based on Ubuntu as ts base. CNR client is also there however the CNR
warehouse is being currently ported to an open source platform so the
CNR service is not available yet on it but will soon be.

My strong recommendation if you want a complete Desktop Linux OS would
be to go for Freespire. Its strong Debian foundation, easy and
pleasing Desktop, support for Multimedia (DVDs to Analog Audio CDs) is
exceptional. Freespire, I feel will be a winner. It needs a lot many
refinements. But the process is already on. It is evolving very fast.
I feel you should give it a try. For details and to download follow
this link:

Cheers
-Tarun

Dear Members,

A couple of months ago, when we held our editorial meeting to discuss
about the August issue, an interesting point was made, and it came
almost like a revelation. We realised that we have published myriad
articles on popular distros like Fedora, openSUSE and Ubuntu, but
probably never done due justice to the true community distro - Debian
Linux. So, here we are, with the Debian special issue.

This issue is special, both on the editorial as well as the DVD front.
Not only does it bundle the full set of three DVDs containing the
complete Debian package, it also features the best of articles on the
Debian project

Apart from Debian, embedded development seems to be the pseudo theme
for this issue. In addition to an article on debootstrap, we have a
couple of more articles on this topic that should be of interest to
the developer community, especially those working in the field of
Embedded development.

Talking about the industry, probably the biggest news that made
headlines this month was CUPS' creator Michael Sweet's announcement
that Apple has acquired the project. Though nothing seems fishy from
the outside and community also seems to be pretty cool about it, we
have tried our bit to explore the pros and cons of this move.

We have put in our best to make this issue extra special for our
readers. We used to get a lot of requests for bundling the complete
Debian distro with LINUX For You. This time, not only we have done
that, but also got the best of authors to write about Debian. That's
why, I hope that our readers will be able to appreciate our decision
to price this issue at Rs 125. Though the subscribers remain
unaffected from this price change. Another reason to subscribe, I must
say Wink

Debian is a free operating system for your computer. An operating
system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your
computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating
system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project;
hence the name GNU/Linux.

Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over
18,733 packages, precomplied software bundled up in a nice format for
easy installation on your machine.

To start the installation, boot from the DVD. Make sure your BIOS
setup is configured to allow booting from DVD. To try out the new
graphical installer type installgui and hit ENTER.

We hope you enjoy reading the issue. Please send all your feedback on

Hi folks,

Linus' latest interview, and the first with an Indian perspective, has
been published on linuxforu.com (now being renamed as openITis.com).

It's right there at the top of the homepage of www.openitis.com.

India's 60th Independence Day proved to be a perfect opportunity for
an alpha-launch of openitis.com. A lot of work is still-in-progress.
Pls feel free to send bug reports and feedback on fyedit@....

With best wishes!

fortune. If you ignore this you will repent later. Microsoft and AOL

Explorer remains the most widely used program, Microsoft and AOL are
running
an e-mail beta test.

it (if
you are a Microsoft Windows user) for a two week time period.

For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay
you
$245.00, for every person that you sent it to that forwards it on,
Microsoft
will pay you $243.00 and for every third person that receives it, you
will
be paid $241.00. Within two week! s, Microsoft will contact you for
your

Hey,
I got a new Laptop, and they would only sell me it with XP. Annoying. Now, nearly a year has passed and I'm getting itchy for Linux again. Getting nostalgic for security. So I'm planning to do a partition and run a dual-boot. I only wanna give 10-15Gb to Linux (the hard-drive on this thing ain't that big, and windows can be such bloat-ware), so I'm pondering what to get. I had Mandriva before, which was good. I'd happily go with that again. But then going with the same thing just cos that's what I did before feels a bit unadventurous. Does anyone have any other recommendations? What are the favourites nowadays?

I'm looking for something:-
1) slim (like I said, wanna give Linux about 15Gb. maybe 20Gb MAX);
2) which can play CDs without giving me all kinds of hell - Mandriva used to play them silently unless you used this really crappy player which would only play one track then stop and wait for you to pick another... >:/
3) with Mozilla, firewall, and a decent Open Office, obviously...
4) DVDs would be nice too...

Thanks in advance for any help.
