Aerodynamics are as important to modern Formula 1 race cars as they
are to jet fighters. That's why the BMW Williams F1 team turn to a
Linux cluster when they need to get a bit more out of their 3-litre,
1,000-horsepower, 1,320-lb. FW25 car.

SCO Fires back, Subpoenas Stallman, Torvalds et al

"SCO has just, within the past hour, announced that they have fired
back against IBM's legal broadside, with one of their own, [1] filing
subpoenas against several of the biggest names in Linux. SCO filed
subpoenas with the U.S. District Court in Utah, targeting six
different individuals or organizations. Those include Novell; Linus
Torvalds, creator of the Linux kernel; Richard Stallman of the Free

A researcher has parsed much of the Linux kernel source code and its
evolving development sequence into a series of 3D visual animations
and posted these on a high bandwidth website hosted by a French ISP.
So, if the SCO legal team hasn't yet read all of the Linux kernel
source code, they might want to just watch the movie instead.

So friends check out the "3D animation of Linux source code
development" in the form of these three MPEGs:
#A guided tour of Linux-2.4.5: 9 MB MPEG (384x288, 2000 frames).
#From 1.2.0 to 2.4.1: 12 MB MPEG (384x288, 1400 frames).
#From 1.2.0 to 2.4.1: 4 MB MPEG (320x240, 1200 frames, low motion).

Dear Pankaj,
We maintain a large ISP in Mumbai and we are running many servers out here ranging from big ones such as SUN machines for our
DNS services to HP Brios (yes with 20GB IDE disks/256mb RAM and RedHat Linux/Qmail taking on about 20-30,000 mails a day) for mail server(s),
on the low end. and everything else in between .

Your server config will have to be based on a million parameters, firstly how DEEEEEEEEEEP are you pockets....... this is very very
important. then what will be the server used for eg will it be a WEB server, Database server, DNS server, mail server, monitoring server,
RAS server, RADIUS server etc.... once the end use has been defined you will need to find out the aprox utilization of the server eg.
a web server will be hosting 100 websites each with 100mb storage and aprox 500 hits per site per day and avg transfer of about 30mb per site per day
with this utilization stuff in hand you will be able to calculate the aprox hardware requirements, then just go out and buy the next highest specs that
you get from your calculation(s) or get something which matches your fund allocations...

hope this helps

Open Source Development Lab and IBM plan to push corporate adoption of Linux on
desktops from January
IBM and the Open Source Development Lab (OSDL), whose membership includes
Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Intel, are beginning a drive to promote Linux as an
alternative to Windows on desktops.
OSDL is planning a programme to encourage corporate adoption of desktop Linux,
set to begin in January. The IBM plan now is to use Linux as the desktop
operating system in a simplified computing environment that relies on
delivering, updating and maintaining desktop applications over high-speed
corporate networks.

Dear Pankaj,

Mainly three services are provided by an ISP.That is Web hosting
services, Internet services and mail services. Accordingly the number
and the specifications of the server should be decided. one thing is
that it should have a number of serial ports so that every user can
dial the server for the internet connection.

So depending on the requirement the server should be selected.

One of the founders of the open-source software initiative is planning to
release a new version of Linux to challenge Red Hat's enterprise version of the
operating system, and fill the hole left in the consumer market since Red Hat
announced last week it would no longer sell a consumer version in retail stores.

The new version of Linux, called UserLinux, is being proposed by open-source
sage Bruce Perens, who claims to have the backing of some of the world's largest
companies, across a number of business sectors. UserLinux, which will be paid
for with multimillion-dollar donations from Perens' corporate backers, will be
free for unlimited use, and will be certified by large computer makers.

UserLinux should be available in six months, and discs containing a consumer
version of UserLinux could hit retail store shelves shortly thereafter. Those
discs would basically sell at cost, or as little as $10.

Carla Huffman, Microsoft's product manager for the Virtual PC, told

can run Linux in Virtual PC". She further told "Customers will be able

Subject:: FEDORA -Red Hat's new hobbyist Linux release
tarunkant@...
Send Email Send Email

Red Hat released the first version of its hobbyist edition of Linux called
Fedora Core 1, part of a split in the company's product line. Fedora is
available for download only; by not offering a retail version, the company
believes it can update the software more quickly. The frequent Fedora updates
are intended to help the company rapidly mature its new technology. The next
version, Fedora Core 2, will focus on the forthcoming 2.6 Linux kernel at the
heart of the open-source operating system. To put it in simpler words, The
Fedora Project is a Red-Hat-sponsored and community-supported open source
project. The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to
build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free
software. Development will be done in a public forum.

Untill now, Red Hat Linux and was available as a free download. Red Hat also
used to sell the software in retail outlets along with instruction manuals,
support and services such as certification that hardware and other software
would work with it. But because that business structure didn't lead to
profitability, Red Hat has split its software into two lines, -The Enterprise
version and the Enthusiast version.

The support certification -and of course a big price tag, comes with Red Hat
Enterprise Linux (RHEL), while the free version becomes Fedora. RHEL will be
updated every 12 to 18 months to make it easier for computing industry partners
to match their products with the software, while Red Hat intends to update
Fedora with the latest technology three times a year. Moreover, another big
difference between the two versions is that Red Hat won't guarantee patches for
security holes and bugs for Fedora.

The open-source community is worried that Linux firms will abandon the
consumer market

Two major moves by well-known Linux companies have the open-source
community worried that the consumer is being left behind.

On Monday, in an expected move, Red Hat said it would stop supporting
all consumer versions of Red Hat Linux by the end of April 2004 and
only planned to support its business version of the operating system.
On Tuesday, enterprise software maker Novell announced an agreement to
buy Linux maker SuSE for $210m (£125m).

The moves could return consumers to a choice of Linux distributions
from smaller companies -- such as Mandrake, Xandros or Lindows -- or
from community projects such as Debian, Fedora, Gentoo and Slackware.

Novell appears to be planning to carry SuSE's open-source torch, but
it hasn't made specific comments regarding lower-priced versions of
its Linux products.

Microsoft's new version of the Windows operating system, code named
"Longhorn", is scheduled for release in 2005/2006. I believe that with this
new version of Windows, Microsoft's would try to play the trump card in its,
yet early, battle against Linux on the desktop and the Open Source Software
(OSS) movement in general.

Some of the important innovations that Longhorn is said to be providing the
industry, and the Windows user at large, a few years from now, are:

* Pervasive use of XML as a single document markup systax and its related
technologies.
* WinFS (Which stands for Windows Future Storage), a new file system based
around relational database technology and natural language like meta-queries
* New user interface technologies based on DirectX, in place of the GDI
interface. Every window in the release version will be a 32-bit, z-buffered, 3D
surface
* A new presentation and UI design subsystem, codenamed "Avalon," based around a
declaretive markup styntax, the Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML)
* A new communications architecture, codenamed "Indigo," that is an enhanced and
integrated version of Microsoft's .NET framework
* "Improved" security and digital rights management with it's Next-Generation
Secure Computing Base

The Xbox is clearly strategic for Microsoft. The news broke yesterday
that Microsoft will be using IBM's PowerPC chip in the next version of
the Xbox. Yes, the chip that is the core of the Apple. IBM is expected
to combine the functionality of other chips (particularly for
graphics) to build what Microsoft requires. Compatibility with the old
Xbox will be provided by emulation technology. Microsoft's move has
lots of implications.

Hi all,
I just tried my hands at Bhavyasoft's new BhavyaOS. And believe me I was more
than impressed. For a SOHO kind of user who needs GUI, it is beautifully
rendered.I got this distro with my copy of the latest November 2003 issue of the
'Linux For You' magazine. I popped in the CD and booted from the CD. It was all
flawless. The look and feel is simply irresistable. Though I need to test it
furtheron to see how other things are integrated.

BhavyaOS is a GNU/Linux Operating system, designed to run completely from a
single CD without the necessity of a harddisk . It has applications for almost
every imaginable task. It can be used as a recovery system , a demo system or
just to learn and try linux . It has office suites, multimedia players, advanced
image editors, challenging games, lots of these and more.

BhavyaOS is basically an enhancement of the RH 9 distribution. It includes the
latest linux kernel 2.4.20 and lots of other utilities, another major
enhancement is the user friendly reorganized menu system, you will feel at ease
with it. BhavyaOS includes about 2 GB of quality software, all compressed onto a
single CD using a transparent decompression module called cloop (from KNOPPIX),
for compressed loopback system. It has automatic hardware detection and all your
linux, win9x/NT/XP harddisk partitions are made available in read-only mode. For
writable area Bhavya OS uses your system RAM, you may also save your work and
custom settings onto any other writable media.

Some of the Packages & Utilities available in Bhavya OS:

The following is (an incomplete) list of available utilities. The actual list
runs into a few hundred packages and is best experienced instead of being listed
:

* OFFICE SUITES    : K-Office, Open Office.org 1.1
* AUDIO PLAYERS : XMMS and more
* VIDEO PLAYERS    : M-Player ,Xmovie ..
* IMAGE EDITORS    : GIMP , Image Magic ...
* COMPILERS        : GCC , Perl , Python ...

The Linux Documentation Project is ten years old. Launched in response
to a "lack" of good documentation. Matt Welsh wrote the first Linux
HOWTO as the first 'Installation HOWTO' - the first of what is now a
huge collection of focused, solution-oriented documents. It became a
movement just like Linux itself as more people joined the effort,
tools were created, and documents were written, translated and published.

Dear Mr. Mahipal Singh Rathore,
Welcome to SunnyLUG. Before I address your issue, let me point out
that when ever you post a message to SunnyLUG please make sure that
the subject line reflects the contents of your message. This is
important as all messages are threaded. Moreover, this can annoy other
members also.

Regarding help on Linux installation please check out "The Beginners
Linux Guide" (BLG). The BLG is an excellent site for newbies seeking
help with topics on Linux. The URL is:
http://www.linux.ie/newusers/beginners-linux-guide/

Since you are new to Linux, the choice of the Linux distribution that
you are planning to install is quite important. Some distributions are
easier to install by newbies than others. I would recommend that you
try out either of the following:
1. ELX (Everyone's Linux, an Indian distribution that also came free
with LFY magazine (Vol.1; Issue 4). ELX has a very straightforward
installation process
2. Mandrake Linux 9.1 (won't recommend 9.2 as this had some problems
with certain CD drives)
3. SuSE Linux
Besides ease of installation these distributions are also designed for
people who are new to Linux and want to try out the X-window system
(that is the GUI environment).

There is another option available. Go to a good book store and look
for "RedHat Linux Bible" (now the RedHat Linux 9.0 Bible is
available). This book whcih costs about some 450 bucks also comes with
the complete set REdHat Linux installation CDs. This book is a good
starting point for a new user. RedHat linux is also pretty
straightforward to install, but as a new user you may not find it's
GUI organization that intutive.

For more on the different Linux distributions available today check
out Distrowatch at: http://www.distrowatch.com/.

If you need any other specific help feel free to post a message

Good Luck

Please check out the MUSCLE (which stands for "Movement for Use of
Smart Card in a Linux Environment") website- http://www.linuxnet.com/
MUSCLE also has its mailing list which you can subscribe to.
However I am not sure if they have any Indian or North Indian
component or chapter for your specific needs

To know the contents of a deb file, if you have dpkg installed
fire Midnight Commander (mc) ... Just press enter on the .deb
file in mc and you have all the contents of the .deb file ...
Then you can copy all the stuff from one pane to another in
some directory. Same thing applies to .tar.gz and rpm files ..
provided rpm, tar and gzip are installed.

In fact we are late. As per rules, Govt will decide from firms which

raise voice, provided we have expertise and resources to do so.

This is not sufficient. We need our presence felt. We must quote.
Sometime need complete project report and has to compete with M$
based soultion vendors logically.

Is   there  not   good  professionals   or  firms   who  can   provide
Free/Open-source based  solution using  smart card? If any  one knows,
please  let  me  know or  if  there  is  some  other mailing  list  or
News-group for such firms/vendors, which  may provide service in North
India, I would like to know that.

Why I  am asking this? Following  is the reason. One  State Government
issued  open tender  for  such a  project to  be  implemented for  all
technical Institutions  in the state. As  per my knowledge, no  one is
there with Free/Open-source based  solution. All are M$ based. I would
like to take up the issue with  State Government, but only if some one
is there who can provide such a solution.
