Analyst: Linux will see double-digit growth
Source: LinuxWorld
In an intriguing display of attempting both to have its cake and eat it, a new
report from The Yankee Group is headlined, in upbeat fashion, Linux Will Enjoy
Double-Digit Growth, but comes with a careful qualifying sub-title, But Don't
Expect Windows or UNIX to Fade Away.

A Linux Desktop for Die-Hard Windows Users

Microsoft's Longhorn Failure Is Linux's Chance
Microsoft's vaporware master plan is finally broken. The wonderful wizards of
Redmond are still saying, "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!" But
even the most fanatical Microsoft supporter has to see that Longhorn has become
Shorthorn.
Microsoft has often managed to freeze the market with promises that no matter
how great a competitor's current program is, Microsoft's next program will be so
much better that only a fool would settle for a bird in the hand instead of the
two in the Microsoft bush. We have been such fools.
Longhorn was, among other things, just another attempt to lock down the market.
This time around, Microsoft was trying to freeze out the insurgent Linux and the
revitalized Mac desktops.
Microsoft has finally shown that its bag of tricks is empty. Now is the time for
Linux vendors to get their act together and deliver the best possible Linux
desktop.
Specifically, Linux desktop distributors need to go to hardware vendors and
demand that they open up their APIs so that Linux can work on all common desktop
equipment. In particular, we need full support for Wi-Fi and a better ability to
identify network printers over CUPS (Common Unix Printing System).Linux vendors
also need to work on building the best possible desktop applications.
Now is also the time for Linux companies to go to software developers and get
more applications ported to Linux. I and many other users want applications such
as Intuit's QuickBooks and Macromedia's Dreamweaver, a popular Web authoring
tool, running natively on Linux.

Take your Linux desktop on the road with the GlobeTrotter
LaCie, previously famous for the unstoppable extremeness of their Bigger Disk
Extreme and their silver-ingot external drives, has dropped their latest silvery
Porsche-designed external drive on us. The difference this time is the inclusion
of a Linux distro on board courtesy of MandrakeSoft, so you can hook the
GlobeTrotter up to any PC or Mac via USB, whence it will detect the hardware and
boot you up a Mandrake Linux desktop. At 40GB the drive itself isn’t
tremendously large, and you’re obviously not going to have much luck working
on planes with it, but at $219 the pricing doesn’t seem too steep.
Or does it?

XP SP2 Gives Reasons to Switch to Linux
By Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols available at:
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1640069,00.asp
Excerpts are here:
Take, if you will, please take it, Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2). I've worked
a lot with SP2, and I didn't expect to see great security improvements from it.
I know Windows too well to think that anything short of a complete redesign will
actually make it approach Linux's levels of security.
The Linux desktop is far more stable and secure than XP SP2 is today. Linux
applications run without fussing, and never has a single, serious Linux virus
been seen in the wild.

Microsoft Dismisses British Objections to Anti-Linux Ad
The British Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) decision issued Wednesday
found that a Microsoft advertisement placed in a British specialist magazine
claiming that open-source Linux was far more expensive to run than Windows was
misleading. ASA called on Microsoft to amend the ad.
"Our customers continue to value information comparing the various vendor
technology offerings. We believe it is important to continue to provide this
kind of factual information," she said.
The ASA upheld the complaints, noting that because the advertisement stated that
Linux was found to be over 10 times more expensive than Windows, this implied
the comparison was between Linux and Windows operating systems only, and not
about the performance of operating systems on different hardware.
"The Authority considered that readers would infer that the advertisement
compared Linux and Windows operating systems only and that the advertisement
implied running Linux operating systems were, in general, ten times more
expensive than running a Windows operating system."News

UN body releases desktop Linux guide
A Linux desktop manual for novice PC users has been produced by a UN-funded
organisation, the International Open Source Network (IOSN). The manual has been
produced to encourage developing countries to use open-source software. It
includes basic information on how to manage files, browse the Web and produce
OpenOffice documents on a Linux PC.
Sunil Abraham, a manager at the Malaysia-based IOSN, said on Tuesday that it
hopes the manual will encourage the development sector, especially Information
and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) projects, to explore
open-source software.
According to Abraham, there are over 800 ICT4D projects across the globe, and at
the moment most are running proprietary software.
The Linux user manual is available online in OpenOffice and PDF format. Abraham
said the IOSN is also planning to distribute a printed version as well as a
Linux Live CD -- a bootable CD that lets users try the Linux operating system
and applications without making any changes to their system.

Hi,
Gentoo Linux is a versatile and fast, completely free Linux distribution geared
towards developers and network professionals. Unlike other distros, Gentoo Linux
has an advanced package management system called "Portage". Portage is a true
ports system in the tradition of BSD ports, but is Python-based and sports a
number of advanced features including dependencies, fine-grained package
management, "fake" (OpenBSD-style) installs, safe unmerging, system profiles,
virtual packages, config file management, and more.
But if you are new to Linux I recommend that you try out any of the follwing
first:
1. Xandros (fetch the last month's LFY magazine and you get it free)
2. Mandrake 10.0 (even 9.0 is cool)
3. ELX (A great Indian distro, also came with LFY couple of months back)
Good luck with your linux venture

Why do we have two versions of Linux For You now?
-------------------------------------------------
Linux For You was conceived with the aim of pushing Linux from labs
to offices. To achieve this goal, we realised that we needed to
reduce the pricing of the main magazine so that those who were not
technical but curious about Linux/OSS could access the information.
Hence, LINUX For You's main magazine was created as a magazine for
everyone to read.
At the same time, the demand from the tech community was clear --
they needed technical content along with CDs that bundled the latest
software and distros. Hence, the combined pack of LINUX For You and
LFY PRO and the two CDs is now available at Rs 100!
For more details about LINUX For You magazine, log on to
www.linuxforu.com or email at niraj@....
This communication aims to inform the Linux community about the
information contained in Asia's only magazine on Linux and open
source, and we hope that it will be taken positively.
SCO Doesn't Plan Additional Suits Against Linux Users
CEO Darl McBride said the company will wait for decisions in SCO's lawsuits
against IBM and AutoZone Inc. before deciding whether to move ahead with
additional litigation, company spokesman Blake Stowell said in a telephone
interview from the SCO Forum in Las Vegas. "Our strategy for now is to focus all
of our legal team's resources on our current cases," Stowell said. "The outcome
from the legal system will set the precedent for how we will proceed with any
future litigation."

n the IBM case, SCO is seeking $5 billion in damages, claiming IBM violated its
Unix license by contributing SCO's copyrighted code to Linux. IBM has denied the
allegations and has counter-sued for patent infringement and other claims. The
trial on SCO's suit is scheduled for next year.

Hello all!
Check this out...

Linux boasts the widest array of filesystem support among mainstream
operating systems. However, Microsoft (with Longhorn) and Apple (with
Tiger) have made it clear that they consider the filesystem of the
future to be a database of information to be mined, and that client
PCs will be a major part of the next chapter in the "search wars." The
future of Linux may depend on whether Linux filesystems continue to
innovate.

I think this idea has something which must be taken care of. So what

There is one more big organization who has silently switched over to
Linux without any publicity. That is Life Insurance Corporation Of

I was earlier with LIC and involved in network-enabling cobol
application and know of this feat. These were earlier Unixware server

This is the first major victory for the Linux Community in this case. And the
first signs of SCO loosing out. And as always I again say that the time is not
far away that SCO will cease to exist as a company. Linux is here to stay.
Shares of SCO Group sank Thursday after a judge threw out most of a lawsuit
against DaimlerChrysler. In fat, shares of SCO recently declined 38 cents, or
8.2%, to $4.25. That's about 81% below its 52-week high of $22.29, signaling
investors may be losing faith in the Lindon, Utah-based company's Linux battle.

If Microsoft chairman Bill Gates thought he had worries about open
source stealing market share from Microsoft in the Australian public
sector, Malaysia has just proved to be a much bigger problem.
Less than a month after Gates' high-profile roadshow through Asia, the
Malaysian government has mandated the in-house deployment of open
source software (OSS) in what may well be the biggest national
backlash against proprietary software in the world, according to a
report in Malaysia's national daily newspaper.

Users are the weak link in security and Linux is inherently more
secure than Windows, said developers polled by Evans Data in a survey

One in four developers think that the biggest hurdle to security is
end users refusing to adhere to polices, a nice way to pass the buck
for potentially-flawed code.
