  Dear Sarvesh,

I dont have the straight idea about programming for the embedded linux programming but i do have a lot idea about applications interfacing with linux system thru standard and non standard ports, we have developed these applications in visual basic.

Please let me know if this information can be useful for you and in which form you will require this information.

C-DAC launches Janabhaaratii FLOSS localisation project C-DAC, the Indian
government-run Centre for the Development of Advanced Computing, has

"development, deployment and community building, and the work would be put

Govt open to open source software ... or just hedging bets? India's
business newspaper reported in end-December 2004 that the Government of
India "continues to evaluate options for using open source software, a move
which would proliferate the usage of IT by bringing down its costs". IT
secretary Brijesh Kumar was quoted as telling the Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry, an industry lobby group, that the
"government continues to consider options available in open source
software". There was a suggestion that "India should force proprietory
software makers to share source code by threatening to shift to open source
software", the ET reported, citing the case of China.

Want to 'scrape content' from another site? Make sure it's legal, and hey
presto, you have the tools to do that. See for instance
http://fnlinuxindia.notlong.com

How?

Linux-india.org under Raj Mathur (of Delhi) is making a good offer:

 	 http://www.linux-india.org/

Welcome to the India Linux Organisation!

This site is an example of what can be done with the Linux India web site and
provides simple hints to get you started. You can change everything: the logo,
the overall look, the categories at the top of this page, the content of this
and every page. You can rename pages, delete them and add new ones. You can
invite members and manage who gets to see and do what! The only tools you need
are this browser, your mouse and your keyboard.

Please create an account and edit your personal page to get a feel of what can
be done with this package.

What they are saying is also this:

LUG Information
Are You A LUG?

If you are associated with a LUG in India please create an account for
yourself. Call it ``lug-<location>'' and put whatever information you want
about your LUG on your page. Then send me (Raj Mathur, <raju (at) linux-delhi
(dot) org>) the page URL and I'll link it from the LUG page on this site.

Please put at least the URL of your LUG on your page.

So you've been waiting for the linux-india.org web site to finally come
up... It has, of a sort.

Installed MetaDot (http://metadot.com/), a FLOSS CMS on the site. It's
working, but I haven't done any except very basic configuration yet.

If you feel adventurous, have loads of time and don't mind reading and
re-reading documentation, please download the MetaDot documentation from:

    http://download.metadot.com/Metadot_Documentation-pdf.zip

It's very comprehensive. Read it. Understand it. Make a list of stuff
that needs to be done for the site.

Then give me a shout and I'll give you the admin password to customise and
manage the site.

Remember, you are the boss! The site is your baby, nurture it.

Regards,

Subject:: More Bioinformatic Linux Distros
tarunkant@...

Hi Again,
Here are a few more dedicated Linux distros for Life Science researchers and
bioinformaticians:
(Numbering continues from my last mail):

5. Biolinux-BR
BioLinux-BR is a project directed to the scientific community. The intention is
to create a Linux distribution for people with little familiarity with the
installation of the operational system and mainly for people that do not know
how they must proceed to unpack a program, compile and install it correctly. For
these reasons, this is a Linux system that aims to be easy to use and still
offering packages that will be part of the BioLinux-BR.
Website: http://glu.df.ibilce.unesp.br/

6. Vlinux
VLinux Bioinformatics workbench is a Linux distribution for Bioinformatics. It
is easy to use, no installation required, CD-based distribution based on Knoppix
3.3. It includes a variety of sequence and structure analysis packages. It is an
Open source product released under the GNU GPL License.
Website: http://bioinformatics.org/vlinux/index.html

7. Vigyaancd
VigyaanCD is a live Linux CD containing all the required software to boot the
computer with ready to use modeling software. VigyaanCD v0.1 is also based on
KNOPPIX v3.3. It contains programs for bioinformatics, computational biology and
computational chemistry. It also has genomes from Eschercia coli (K 12) and
Synechococcus sp. WH 8102 It is suitable both for beginners (12 demos and
tutorials) and experts. ISO image size (v 0.1) is 647 MB.

And let me tell you this is an effort by an Indian. Kudos to you Pratul K.
Agarwal for such a nice package. In fact I just downloaded the CD and have
casually tried it. Looks superb. It has the option for a persistant home
directory on HDD, which is very essential for Live CDs. Every thing is very
comprehensively arranged. Once again. Three chers for Pratul.

Cheers
-Tarun

Hi All,
For people who are into life science research / bioinformatics, there are a few
good linux distros available. I will be trying these out in the coming days and
will keep posting my experiences. These are:

1. DNALinux
DNALinux is a is a SLAX-based Linux distribution with bioinformatics software
pre-installed. DNA and protein sequence manipulation software is included. Like
EMBOSS, Primer3, ClustalW, T-Coffe and others.
Website: http://www.dnalinux.com/

2. BioBrew Linux
BioBrew Linux is an open source Linux distribution based on the NPACI Rocks
(www.rocksclusters.org) cluster software and enhanced for bioinformaticists and
life scientists. While it looks, feels, and operates like ordinary Red Hat
Linux, BioBrew Linux includes popular cluster software e.g. MPICH, LAM-MPI, PVM,
Modules, PVFS, Myrinet GM, Sun Grid Engine, gcc, Ganglia, and Globus, *and*
popular bioinformatics software e.g. the NCBI toolkit, BLAST, mpiBLAST, HMMER,
ClustalW, GROMACS, PHYLIP, WISE, FASTA, and EMBOSS. It runs on everything from
notebook computers to large clusters.
Website: http://bioinformatics.org/biobrew/

3. Bio-Linux
Bio-Linux provides both standard and cutting edge bioinformatics tools on a
Linux base. It is powerful, configurable and easy to maintain. Bio-Linux has
been customised for ease of use and provides an ideal system for scientists
handling and analysing biological data. Bio-Linux also comes with many
development tools, providing a solid base for bioinformatics software
development. It can also be easily deployed as a computer cluster. As of version
4.0, Bio-Linux is based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution.
Bioinformatics-related customisations include the inclusion of a large number of
bioinformatics programs and programming libraries, the addition of graphical
menus for much of the bioinformatics software, and links from the desktop to key
documentation and applications. The system also includes a comprehensive,
categorised and searchable documentation system for bioinformatics software.

4. Bioknoppix
The University of Puerto Rico High Performance Computing facility (HPCf) and the
Puerto Rico Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN-PR) have release
Bioknoppix. Bioknoppix is a live CD linux, based on KNOPPIX, and specialized to
include tools for bioinformatics. Bioknoppix does not need to be installed on
your computer, making it a perfect tool for workshops and demos. Some of the
software included in the 0.3 release are EMBOSS 2.8.0, jemboss, artemis,
clustal, Cn3D, ImageJ, BioPython, Rasmol, Bioperl, Bioconductor

o File formats; format wars (Marco Fioretti)
File formats: the past, the present, a possible future

o XML: The answer to everything? (Kay Ethier, Scott Abel)
This article weighs the pros and cons of XML for some
applciations (publishing) and explores why it is the
best possible solution for many programming and
 	   publishing needs.

o Free file formats and the future of intellectual
   	   freedom (Terry Hancock)
Information as property may be served by closed
file formats, but the freedom of information
 	   requires free formats.

o Creating the Free Software Magazine (Tony Mobily)
A long path that takes us to the very beginning
 	   of this project.

o Mac OS X: Welcome to the jungle -- a look inside the

 	   (Malcolm D Spence)

o Smarter password management (John Locke)
How to handle your passwords without getting lost

o The content tail wags the IT dog (Daniel James)
Without hardware and software, there would be
nothing for digital media to be created on, or used
with. And yet the content industry attempts to tell
the far larger IT industry what it can and cannot do.

o Motivation and value of free resources. Wikipedia
and Planetmath show the way (Aaron E Klemm)

o It's all about freedom (Christian Einfeldt)
Freedom is free software's competitive advantage.

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Hello people,

(my apologies if you receive this email more than once!)

I sent this email to people who proposed articles or advertising for
Free
Software Magazine.

Well, Free Software Magazine (issue 1) is out!
Please go and check it out: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

It is absolutely crucial, at this point, that we all:

* Spread the word. Talk about Free Software Magazine to your LUG's
mailing
lists, your geek and non-geek friends, and anybody who you think could
be
interested in subscribing

* Subscribe yourself! (if you can afford it). In the (hopefully near)
future,
writers and arvertisers will get a free subscription. Until then,
please
support us!

* Tell Slashdot/Freshmeat/anybody about us! Here is a possibile
announcement:

"The first issue of Free Software Magazine
(http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com) is out! Free Software Magazine is
a new
magazine entirely dedicated to free software. It contains quality
articles
relating to both technical and non-technical issues; all published
articles are
released under a free license after their publication. The magazine
obviously
needs subscribers - the more the better. Have a look at it: if you feel
like
supporting an exciting project, please subscribe!

* Put a link to http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com on your web site.
Even
better, publish one of these banners on your web site:
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/banners/banner-square.gif
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/banners/fsm_banner_01.gif
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/banners/text_banner.txt

* Do whatever you think could help the magazine - as long as it's
ethical

Well, that's it. Please let me know what you think about Free Software
Magazine. And... thanks a lot for your help!

Bye,

Merc.

Hi All,

A must read article has appeared that ponders upon the fact that open source
doesn't just mean Linux as most people confuse it to be. There are true open
source Linux implementations (like GNU Linux) but there are also Linux
implementations that would never be considered open source by open source
advocates. The article can be reached here:

Yes you are right Himanshu.

I read somewhere that usually every one, particularly those into some form of
engineering be it mechanical or computational, is trained to think with regular
geometry--straight lines, circles, and 45-degree angles. But take a look at
nature. How many bones in the human body have straight edges? Answer: none. And
to solve the more complicated problems is where evolutionary computation comes
into picture. These biologically inspired techniques for solving problems
effeciently, manufacturing products and making more effecient factories. Here is
another very good link about introduction to concepts in GA:
http://www.solver.com/gabasics.htm

There is no wonders that in future we should hopefully be seeing more of GA
intigtrated into Linux.

Guys,

This is how Genetics meet Linux. Incredible stuff this is.

Jake Moilanen provided a series of four patches against the 2.6.9 Linux kernel
that introduce a simple genetic algorithm used for automatic tuning. The patches
update the anticipatory IO scheduler and the zaphod CPU scheduler to both use
the new in-kernel library, theoretically allowing them to automatically tune
themselves for the best possible performance for any given workload.

A genetic algorithm (GA) is an algorithm used to find approximate solutions to
difficult-to-solve problems through application of the principles of
evolutionary biology to computer science. Genetic algorithms use
biologically-derived techniques such as inheritance, mutation, natural
selection, and recombination (or crossover). Genetic algorithms are a particular
class of evolutionary algorithms.

Dear Linux enthusiasts,

LINUX For You: The Complete Magazine on Open Source.
LINUX For You's January issue is now on stands, it has a lot of
content which the
community would like to get their hands on.

PRESENTING THE NEW IMPROVED 'LINUX For You'

*There is a complete guide for Newbies titled 'Newbies guide'. As
explained by the name
the series will take newbies step-by-step through the experience of
working and playing
with Linux.

*There is also a dedicated series with the coolest macros available
for OpenOffice and
how you can use them.

*International cartoonist Javier Malonda has agreed to share his works
with us with the
hope of making even the most serious techie smile.

*Now, also read some of the best articles from Linux Journal.

January's Focus
---------------

LINUX For You: Newbies Special
LINUX For You PRO: Real Time Fun With Joysticks

Other highlights of the January issue includes:
------------------------------------------------
LFY CD #1

This CD has a versatile collection of software of every type--to
enhance your desktop,
programming, security and Linux skills. Some of them are Quasar,
Stellarium,
WebCalendar, and Webmin.

LFY CD #2

Now you can enhance your desktop with speedy Linux distro called YOPER.

Why do we have two versions of Linux For You now?
-------------------------------------------------
Linux For You was conceived with the aim of pushing Linux from labs to
offices. To
achieve this goal, we realised that we needed to reduce the pricing of
the main magazine
so that those who were not technical but curious about Linux/OSS could
access the
information. Hence, LINUX For You's main magazine was created as a
magazine for everyone
to read.

At the same time, the demand from the tech community was clear -- they
needed technical
content along with CDs that bundled the latest software and distros.
Hence, the combined
pack of LINUX For You and LFY PRO and 2 CDs are now available at Rs 100!

For more details about LINUX For You magazine, log on to
www.linuxforu.com or email at
niraj@....

This communication aims to inform the Linux community about the
information contained in
Asia's only magazine on Linux and open source, and we hope that it
will be taken
positively.

Hi!

Hacking around the basic DSP effects that XMMS provides I went to XMMS
site to download some more effects. Without paying much attention I downloaded
a 3D sound effect. To my surprise that was just a demo version!

I was so disappointed. I thought now you would have to pay for it? It was
no doubt a fantastic effect but demo version on linux? I cannot digest this.

By the way, I had this in mind from a long time. I actually had a mail
session with
Dr Kant. I just wanted to know how many of us are into programming
side of Linux?

I want to start a vote session. Even if you are not a programmer,
please do vote for "NO" at
least because some answer is better than none at all!

I feel xmms should have loads of DSP effects of its own. Its fun!

Hi All!

Nice link implicit of what can one do, once he/she knows what linux is
all about.
Linux is not about distros, think it from the kernel point of view.
What you get in distros is utillities. What you see is utililites,
what you don't
see is the innocent kernel lying behind all this.
Once you understand this soul all this would seem to be very much implicit.
You can even have different kernels share the same area on disk. they
live happily respecting each other. At least they behave nicely on my system.
One kernel keeps track of my kernel and driver projects and other takes care
of my music files.

Harpreet, No doubt Dr Kant has always been enriching us with his great links,
but this link is not substandard one, let me make this point clear.
You said there
are better ways of doing this. No doubt at all! but the idea that has brought
linux this far is clearly mentioned in this. Don't think it of having
just a way of
doing thing. Think it as a hack that the author has performed. If you had
somehow discovered the way by spending 1 or 2 days for it, I bet you would
have called it superb way of doing thing. At least the author took time
to share it with all of us. We should appreciate things. That what linux
culture is all about. Linux wouldn't have come this far if Linus would have
dropped every patch just because it was too lame to be implemented.

The only point I want to make is that let try to appreciate somebody's effort.

Thanks and regards

hi friends

with due respect to Dr Tarun Kant(who has always been enriching us by
sending gr8 informative links) i would like to point out that this
article is a substandard one . There are better ways of doing things
than mentioned in the article.
the article has not taken all possible situations into account and just
concentrated on a particular case.
the authors immaturity is evident from the fact he uses /mnt/floppy to
mount his hard disk
following the aricle blindly may also cause harm .

another article that deserves a read;
"Educators - Use money Wisely. Use Linux!" by: Gary Glasscock available at:

Gary Glasscock in this article suggests that Public School Systems now have an

Linux flavors, like Fedora and Ubuntu etc etc? Want to know more? Then read
this: "Dual-booting multiple Linux distros" By: Kevin Russo published at:
