Recipe for a Successful Linux User Group
by Rick Moen

1. You need a Web page.
2. Your Web page needs a reasonable URL.
3. You need a regular meeting location.
4. You need a regular meeting time.
5. You need to avoid meeting-time conflicts.
6. You need to make sure that meetings happen as advertised, without fail.
7. You need a core of several Linux enthusiasts.
8. Your core volunteers need out-of-band methods of communication.
9. You need to get on the main lists of LUGs, and keep your entries
accurate.
      *  http://www.ssc.com/glue/
      * http://lugww.counter.li.org/
      * http://nlug.org/webring/

10. You must have login access to maintain your Web pages, as needed.
11. Design your Web page to be forgiving of deferred maintenance.
12. Always include the day of the week, when you cite event dates. Always
check that day of the week, first, using gcal [2] (or cal). gcal is your
friend.
13. Place time-sensitive and key information prominently near the top of
your main Web page.
14. Include maps and directions to your events.
15. Emphasise on your main page that your meeting will be free of charge and
open to the public (if it is).
16. You'll want to include an RSVP "mailto" hyperlink, on some events.
17. Use referral pages.
18. Make sure every page has a revision date and maintainer link.
19. Check all links, at intervals.
20. You may want to consider establishing a LUG mailing list.
21. You don't need to be in the Internet Service Provider business.
22. Don't go into any other business, either.
23. Walk the walk.

LUG checklist.

The following checklist may be useful for your group, once established.

1. Web page:

a. Meetings:
[ ] Current meeting info? Is it prominent?
[ ] Day of the week? Beginning time? Ending time?
[ ] Double-checked day/date matches against a calendar?
(E.g., is the "Friday, March 28" you listed an error, because the 28th is a
Thursday?)
[ ] Location?
[ ] Map?
[ ] Directions (car, public transit)? Parking tips?
[ ] Information on the next several meetings?
[ ] RSVP mailto link on meetings where this is needed?
[ ] Note that meetings are free and open to the public (if they are)?
[ ] If there's a special fee, is it disclosed next to the event listing?
[ ] If location / time / date formula has changed recently, is this noted
prominently?
[ ] Have you checked for event conflicts with other nearby groups, or with
holidays?

b. General:
[ ] Includes event date-formulas (e.g., 4th Tuesdays)? Prominently?
[ ] Maintainer mailto link?
[ ] Last-revised date?

c. Periodically (maybe every quarter):
[ ] Checked all links on your site for dead links?
[ ] Checked your Web server's logs for pages requested but not found?
(You'll want to put a referral page at that URL.)
[ ] Read all your Web content attentively for outdated content?

2. Other, periodical:
[ ] Reviewed/updated all LUG lists that have entries concerning your group?
[ ] Reviewed all sites that link to yours? Advised their webmasters of
needed corrections?

Last revised: 2003-08-04

Having seen (and run) quite a few Linux user groups (LUGs), and observed
some thrive and others die, I can hazard some firm recommendations. If
you're thinking of starting a LUG, or are running one now, please ponder
these lessons, drawn from other LUGs' experience. In fact, please consider
reviewing this list from time to time, as a kind of checklist.

Friends,

It seems that 2005 is going to be the year of the laptops. In 1998 when I bought
my first laptop (a Pentium 1 machine with 2 GB HDD) in the US and it costed me
$2250. And now the super-store giant Wal*Mart is offering laptops running Linux
for under $500. And If Nicholas Negroponte, founder of MIT’s Media Lab's wish
comes true, cheap wireless laptops for third world countries will soon be
available for around 100 dollars. In India to cheap laptops are already
available that boast Linus OS at just Rs 29,999. So lets wait and watch, for
prices surely are going to drop further, it seems.

Breaking News: Mandrakesoft Buys Conectiva

France's Mandrakesoft SA plans to acquire Brazil's largest Linux vendor,
Conectiva SA, both companies said in a joint statement yesterday.

Both companies are founding members of the Linux Core Consortium, an
organization formed to develop technology that would potentially make it easier
for software makers to build products for multiple distributions of the
open-source operating system. The LCC is developing a runtime environment and
software development kit that would standardize programming of software to the
interfaces of the Linux kernel. The combined company of Mandrakesoft and
Conectiva plans to build its next corporate releases on top of the LCC
implementation.

> 1. How to cross compile tool chain in host PC.

its all given in the above mentioned book.

> 2. where linux kernel image is find in file system

The image from which your kernel will boot is there in /boot
directory, with name starting something like this " vmlinuz"
(compressed image )and "systemmap" (map kernel needs to refer while
booting)

> 3. while booting, what is present in the flash and what is there in the RAM

This is the case in any embedded device: Flash is a non-volatile
memory, whatever is writen there persists.Flash contains bootloader and
info of starting it. from your harddisk or from tftp server you
download the image to flash and from flash it is decompressed into RAM
bcoz ram is much faster and anything you modify doesn't persist so
sometimes this is needed.

> 4. what is download utility ,how it works ,specify name if any.

You make an executable by compiling and making a firmware. This is *.bin file.
Executable placement in flash memory or RAM is typically controlled by
the target's download utility. To support this capability you will
likely need to provide multiple linker command files, multiple
debugger scripts, and possibly multiple make or project files.

sir.

Have you tried out "Building Embedded Linux Systems" by Yaghmor?

=no we had not tried that book

If you could tell your plans in more details, may be I could help you.

="we are building an embedded based system which is use to monitor the processes occuring in the chemical plant.

it is also possible with it to set the setting as well as monitor the process remotely(LAN) in the process of chemical mixing"

How VB come into the scene, I cannot understand.

=we are using VB as our front-end in order to set the setting as well as monitoring purpose for the user, remotely using a PC running windows(VB works only on windows)

For serial programming you won't need anything more

=we are using serial programming in order to configure the kit through RJ-45(using minicom) ,also it can be used when the network is down.

=till now we had not got the development board

=listed the following specification of the board:

I/O (MINIMUM 15)

1 RJ-45

1 RS-232

2MB RAM

4MB FLASH

32-bit processor

=can you suggest any board which satisfy such specification

Thanx and regards

Pune Symbiosis' GNUnify draws big names

http://www.linux-india.org/index.pl?id=3496&isa=Newsitem&op=show

Brian Behlendorf of Apache will be taking part in the Pune GNUnify event,
organisers announced. So will some other big names, include MySQL founder David
Axmark. This year's event will focus on localisation projects, PHP5, Python,
MySQL and more. There's an awareness-building exercise for school students and
teachers on the first day of the event (Feb 13, 2005) followed by an
installfest and more.

Organisers announced today (February 7, 2005) that they were to have Apache
co-founder Brian Behlendorf taking part in the event.

(Apache HTTP Server is an open source HTTP web server for Unix platforms --
BSD, Linux, and UNIX systems -- and Microsoft Windows, and other platforms.
Apache features highly configurable error messages, DBMS-based authentication
databases, and content negotiation, it is also supported by several GUIs which
permit easier, more intuitive configuration of the server. See
http://gui.apache.org/ The Apache HTTP Server is developed and maintained by an
open community of developers under the auspices of the Apache Software
Foundation.)

In addition, they are to have Robert Adkins and Ms Alolita Sharma from
Technetra, California, Ms Danese Cooper from Sun MicroSystems, MySQL founder
David Axmark, and others join their event.

(MySQL is a multithreaded, multi-user, SQL (Structured Query Language)
relational database server or RDBMS. MySQL is available either under the GNU
General Public License or under other licenses when the GPL is inapplicable to
the intended use. Unlike projects such as Apache, MySQL is owned and sponsored
by a single for-profit firm, the Swedish company MySQL AB.)

This year's event will focus on localisation projects, PHP5, Python, MySQL The
Commercial FOSS Database, and more. Visit http://gunify.sicsr.ac.in for details
or contact gnunify@...

GNUnify is being organised by students of the Masters of Science in Computer
Applications -- MSc(CA) degree programme -- of the Symbiosis Institute of
Computer Studies and Research. SICSR was set up in 1985, and offers several
full-time and part-time courses.

Each year, they organise this Free/Open Source Software Event. GNUnify aims at
"contributing and encouraging the use of FOSS", said a release from the
organisers.

"Initiated in the year 2003, 'GNUnify' is a forum to unite open minds. The
event aims at spreading teh philosophy of GNU/Linux -- unifying and
strengthening the use of FLOSS," they said.

Student-organisers said they were successful over the past two years, and had
made this three-day event happen from February 13 to 15 this year.

Event schedule for this year is as follows:

Feb 13 Linux Eduvantage -- awareness for school students and teachers
Feb 14 Install fest, techie talks, workshops and tutorials
Feb 15 Seminars, panel discussion.

How VB come into the scene, I cannot understand. You are using windows
for development? For serial programming you won't need anything more
than the how-to listed at TLDP. BTW which Microcontroller?

Dear Linux enthusiasts,

LINUX For You: The Complete Magazine on Open Source.
LINUX For You's February issue is now on stands, it has a lot of
content which the community would like to get their hands on.

LINUX For You celebrates its second anniversary with this issue.

February's Focus
---------------

LINUX For You

*Looking Back at 2004--This article has excerpts from Linux news that
made it to the headlines between January 2004 and December 2004.

*The Business of Open Source--This article presents the factors
influencing open source to gain industrial strength.

*Software Patents: Jewels for the Rich--This article focuses on how
software patents can become jewels for the rich.

LINUX For You PRO

*Set Up Your Own Internet Lounge--This article presents a step-by-step
guide to set up a temporary Internet lounge.

*PXES Universal Thin Client--This article presents a step-by-step
guide to build thin clients with the PXES, a micro Linux distribution.

*Hack a microcontroller with GNU/Linux--This article presents a
step-by-step guide on building a microcontroller development
environment using Linux and other free software tools.

*Subversion: Organising the Unorganised--This article explores
subversion, an open source version control system similat to the
well-known and widely deployed CVS.

Other highlights of the February issue includes:
------------------------------------------------
LFY DVD

The DVD has a versatile collection of distros. Mandrakelinux 10.1
Community Edition is the highlight of this DVD. Other distros included
are FreeBSD, Ubuntu and Systemrescuedisk.

LFY CD

The CD has a wide collection of tools that will help you set your
Linux environment to move on top gear.

Why do we have two versions of Linux For You now?
-------------------------------------------------
Linux For You was conceived with the aim of pushing Linux from labs to
offices. To achieve this goal, we realised that we needed to reduce
the pricing of the main magazine so that those who were not technical
but curious about Linux/OSS could access the information. Hence, LINUX
For You's main magazine was created as a magazine for everyone to read.

At the same time, the demand from the tech community was clear -- they
needed technical content along with CDs that bundled the latest
software and distros. Hence, the combined pack of LINUX For You and
LFY PRO and 1 DVD and 1 CD are now available at Rs 125!

For more details about LINUX For You magazine, log on to
www.linuxforu.com or email at niraj@....

This communication aims to inform the Linux community about the
information contained in Asia's only magazine on Linux and open
source, and we hope that it will be taken positively.

happening!

C-DAC launches Janabhaaratii FLOSS localisation project C-DAC, the Indian
government-run Centre for the Development of Advanced Computing, has
announced in October 2004 the launch of the launch of its "janabhaaratii"
project for localisation of FLOSS. It suggested the goal would be
"development, deployment and community building, and the work would be put
out under the GPL/LGPL licenses.

Govt open to open source software ... or just hedging bets? India's
business newspaper reported in end-December 2004 that the Government of
India "continues to evaluate options for using open source software, a move
which would proliferate the usage of IT by bringing down its costs". IT
secretary Brijesh Kumar was quoted as telling the Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce and Industry, an industry lobby group, that the
"government continues to consider options available in open source
software". There was a suggestion that "India should force proprietory
software makers to share source code by threatening to shift to open source
software", the ET reported, citing the case of China.

Want to 'scrape content' from another site? Make sure it's legal, and hey
presto, you have the tools to do that. See for instance
http://fnlinuxindia.notlong.com

How?

Linux-india.org under Raj Mathur (of Delhi) is making a good offer:

 	 http://www.linux-india.org/

Welcome to the India Linux Organisation!

This site is an example of what can be done with the Linux India web site and
provides simple hints to get you started. You can change everything: the logo,
the overall look, the categories at the top of this page, the content of this
and every page. You can rename pages, delete them and add new ones. You can
invite members and manage who gets to see and do what! The only tools you need
are this browser, your mouse and your keyboard.

Please create an account and edit your personal page to get a feel of what can
be done with this package.

What they are saying is also this:

LUG Information
Are You A LUG?

If you are associated with a LUG in India please create an account for
yourself. Call it ``lug-<location>'' and put whatever information you want
about your LUG on your page. Then send me (Raj Mathur, <raju (at) linux-delhi
(dot) org>) the page URL and I'll link it from the LUG page on this site.

Please put at least the URL of your LUG on your page.

So you've been waiting for the linux-india.org web site to finally come
up... It has, of a sort.

Installed MetaDot (http://metadot.com/), a FLOSS CMS on the site. It's
working, but I haven't done any except very basic configuration yet.

If you feel adventurous, have loads of time and don't mind reading and
re-reading documentation, please download the MetaDot documentation from:

    http://download.metadot.com/Metadot_Documentation-pdf.zip

It's very comprehensive. Read it. Understand it. Make a list of stuff
that needs to be done for the site.

Then give me a shout and I'll give you the admin password to customise and
manage the site.

Remember, you are the boss! The site is your baby, nurture it.

Regards,

Subject:: More Bioinformatic Linux Distros
tarunkant@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi Again,
Here are a few more dedicated Linux distros for Life Science researchers and
bioinformaticians:
(Numbering continues from my last mail):

5. Biolinux-BR
BioLinux-BR is a project directed to the scientific community. The intention is
to create a Linux distribution for people with little familiarity with the
installation of the operational system and mainly for people that do not know
how they must proceed to unpack a program, compile and install it correctly. For
these reasons, this is a Linux system that aims to be easy to use and still
offering packages that will be part of the BioLinux-BR.
Website: http://glu.df.ibilce.unesp.br/

6. Vlinux
VLinux Bioinformatics workbench is a Linux distribution for Bioinformatics. It
is easy to use, no installation required, CD-based distribution based on Knoppix
3.3. It includes a variety of sequence and structure analysis packages. It is an
Open source product released under the GNU GPL License.
Website: http://bioinformatics.org/vlinux/index.html

7. Vigyaancd
VigyaanCD is a live Linux CD containing all the required software to boot the
computer with ready to use modeling software. VigyaanCD v0.1 is also based on
KNOPPIX v3.3. It contains programs for bioinformatics, computational biology and
computational chemistry. It also has genomes from Eschercia coli (K 12) and
Synechococcus sp. WH 8102 It is suitable both for beginners (12 demos and
tutorials) and experts. ISO image size (v 0.1) is 647 MB.

And let me tell you this is an effort by an Indian. Kudos to you Pratul K.
Agarwal for such a nice package. In fact I just downloaded the CD and have
casually tried it. Looks superb. It has the option for a persistant home
directory on HDD, which is very essential for Live CDs. Every thing is very
comprehensively arranged. Once again. Three chers for Pratul.

Cheers
-Tarun

Subject:: Linux Distros for Life Science / Bioinformatics Researchers
tarunkant@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi All,
For people who are into life science research / bioinformatics, there are a few
good linux distros available. I will be trying these out in the coming days and
will keep posting my experiences. These are:

1. DNALinux
DNALinux is a is a SLAX-based Linux distribution with bioinformatics software
pre-installed. DNA and protein sequence manipulation software is included. Like
EMBOSS, Primer3, ClustalW, T-Coffe and others.
Website: http://www.dnalinux.com/

2. BioBrew Linux
BioBrew Linux is an open source Linux distribution based on the NPACI Rocks
(www.rocksclusters.org) cluster software and enhanced for bioinformaticists and
life scientists. While it looks, feels, and operates like ordinary Red Hat
Linux, BioBrew Linux includes popular cluster software e.g. MPICH, LAM-MPI, PVM,
Modules, PVFS, Myrinet GM, Sun Grid Engine, gcc, Ganglia, and Globus, *and*
popular bioinformatics software e.g. the NCBI toolkit, BLAST, mpiBLAST, HMMER,
ClustalW, GROMACS, PHYLIP, WISE, FASTA, and EMBOSS. It runs on everything from
notebook computers to large clusters.
Website: http://bioinformatics.org/biobrew/

3. Bio-Linux
Bio-Linux provides both standard and cutting edge bioinformatics tools on a
Linux base. It is powerful, configurable and easy to maintain. Bio-Linux has
been customised for ease of use and provides an ideal system for scientists
handling and analysing biological data. Bio-Linux also comes with many
development tools, providing a solid base for bioinformatics software
development. It can also be easily deployed as a computer cluster. As of version
4.0, Bio-Linux is based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution.
Bioinformatics-related customisations include the inclusion of a large number of
bioinformatics programs and programming libraries, the addition of graphical
menus for much of the bioinformatics software, and links from the desktop to key
documentation and applications. The system also includes a comprehensive,
categorised and searchable documentation system for bioinformatics software.

4. Bioknoppix
The University of Puerto Rico High Performance Computing facility (HPCf) and the
Puerto Rico Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN-PR) have release
Bioknoppix. Bioknoppix is a live CD linux, based on KNOPPIX, and specialized to
include tools for bioinformatics. Bioknoppix does not need to be installed on
your computer, making it a perfect tool for workshops and demos. Some of the
software included in the 0.3 release are EMBOSS 2.8.0, jemboss, artemis,
clustal, Cn3D, ImageJ, BioPython, Rasmol, Bioperl, Bioconductor

Issue 1 Volume 1 of this new magazine has just hit the (cyber)stands. And,
don't be too surprised, you're free to download a copy too of this 78-page
publication. Some of the articles in the first issue:

o File formats; format wars (Marco Fioretti)
File formats: the past, the present, a possible future

o XML: The answer to everything? (Kay Ethier, Scott Abel)
This article weighs the pros and cons of XML for some
applciations (publishing) and explores why it is the
best possible solution for many programming and
 	   publishing needs.

o Free file formats and the future of intellectual
   	   freedom (Terry Hancock)
Information as property may be served by closed
file formats, but the freedom of information
 	   requires free formats.

o Creating the Free Software Magazine (Tony Mobily)
A long path that takes us to the very beginning
 	   of this project.

o Mac OS X: Welcome to the jungle -- a look inside the
Mac OS X software ecology (Chris J Karr)

o The magic of live CDs (Harish Pillay)
What are live CDs, and how do they work?

o Every engineer's checklist for justifying
Free Software. It's not just about 'no licence fees'
 	   (Malcolm D Spence)

o Smarter password management (John Locke)
How to handle your passwords without getting lost

o The content tail wags the IT dog (Daniel James)
Without hardware and software, there would be
nothing for digital media to be created on, or used
with. And yet the content industry attempts to tell
the far larger IT industry what it can and cannot do.

o Motivation and value of free resources. Wikipedia
and Planetmath show the way (Aaron E Klemm)

o It's all about freedom (Christian Einfeldt)
Freedom is free software's competitive advantage.

o The Commons (Dave M Berry)
The Commons as an Idea -- Ideas as a Commons

o Let's not forget our roots (Free Software is not
just about cost or stability; it's a movement that
mustn't forget the principles which made it possible)
 	   Tom Chance.

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Hello people,

(my apologies if you receive this email more than once!)

I sent this email to people who proposed articles or advertising for
Free
Software Magazine.

Well, Free Software Magazine (issue 1) is out!
Please go and check it out: http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com

It is absolutely crucial, at this point, that we all:

* Spread the word. Talk about Free Software Magazine to your LUG's
mailing
lists, your geek and non-geek friends, and anybody who you think could
be
interested in subscribing

* Subscribe yourself! (if you can afford it). In the (hopefully near)
future,
writers and arvertisers will get a free subscription. Until then,
please
support us!

* Tell Slashdot/Freshmeat/anybody about us! Here is a possibile
announcement:

"The first issue of Free Software Magazine
(http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com) is out! Free Software Magazine is
a new
magazine entirely dedicated to free software. It contains quality
articles
relating to both technical and non-technical issues; all published
articles are
released under a free license after their publication. The magazine
obviously
needs subscribers - the more the better. Have a look at it: if you feel
like
supporting an exciting project, please subscribe!

* Put a link to http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com on your web site.
Even
better, publish one of these banners on your web site:
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/banners/banner-square.gif
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/banners/fsm_banner_01.gif
http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/banners/text_banner.txt

* Do whatever you think could help the magazine - as long as it's
ethical

Well, that's it. Please let me know what you think about Free Software
Magazine. And... thanks a lot for your help!

Bye,

Merc.

Hi All,

A must read article has appeared that ponders upon the fact that open source
doesn't just mean Linux as most people confuse it to be. There are true open
source Linux implementations (like GNU Linux) but there are also Linux
implementations that would never be considered open source by open source
advocates. The article can be reached here:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/index.php?p=102
