Prizes Awarded to winners of
Youth Parliament Competition for Delhi

 

The prizes to the winners of the 42nd Youth Parliament Competition, 2007-2008 for the schools under Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi and NDMC were given away today. The students of Government R. N. Thakur, Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, East Vinod Nagar, Delhi bagged the first prize. The winning team also presented a short sitting of ‘Youth Parliament”.

 

Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs & Finance presided over the function and gave away the prizes to the winners. In his remarks, Shri Bansal said, the students have depicted the functioning of Parliament in its right perspective. The Youth Parliament develops in students a democratic temper and outlook which is the cornerstone of successful democracy. Moreover, such exercises make the students aware of the nuances of Parliament functioning, he added.

 

Secretary, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. Rekha Bhargava in her speech said, the basic objective of Youth Parliament Competitions is to educate the students about the functioning of our parliamentary institutions and the rules of procedures of Parliament. The Competition provides the students a platform to learn the virtues of reasoning and deliberations, which form the core of functioning in any Parliament.

 

Trophy for the best educational district in the competition was awarded to the East Education District, Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi. Merit Trophies were awarded to eight schools for their meritorious performance in the competition. 33 schools took part in this year’s competition.

 

Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs have been organizing Youth Parliament Competitions in the schools under the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi and NDMC every year since 1966. In 1978, Kendriya Vidyalayas situated in and around Delhi were incorporated in the competition along with Delhi schools.

 

The Youth Parliament Scheme aims at promoting among the younger generation the spirit of self-discipline, tolerance of diverse opinion, righteous expression of views and other virtues of democratic way of life. It also acquaints the students with the practices and procedures of Parliament, techniques of discussion and debate and develops in them the qualities of leadership.

 

Teams of judges, which included MPs/Ex-MPs along with officers of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi/NDMC, evaluated these competitions.
