Prominent Citizens Launch
Voter Awareness Campaign in New Delhi

 

Akhil Bhartiya Jan Chetna Manch launched the voter awareness campaign on 15th August 2008 in New Delhi from Mavlankar Hall.

 

The Campaign main purpose is to strengthen the democracy by educating the voters. The initiative, therefore, aims at empowering the people to exercise the voting right and thereby creating a conducive environment for electing honest and responsible candidates irrespective of caste, creed and economic status considerations.

The Chief Guest Sri Sri Ravi Shanker blessed the idea and campaign and advice to youth to come forward and work to educate the voter to make answerable to candidate of next election in Delhi. Earlier Mr. Chandra Shekhar Pran, Convenor of the campaign gave the detail of the campaign and about the supporting organizations.

 

Dr S Y Quraishi, Election Commissioner of India, in his keynote speech called upon for moving from being the largest democracy to greatest democracy. He welcomed the movement and promised all possible support for voter education. He informed that his office is doing all efforts to bring the voter to booths, he reminded that 70 per cent of the Indian population being under the age of 35 years and these youth can be great help for motivation to bring the voter to booth to cost the vote.

 

Dr S. N. Subba Rao, noted Gandhian (Chairman of ICYO) said that India was a source of inspiration to many countries as many as 110 counties got independence after 1947. He said that as Indians we should feel proud and commit to oneself that being the citizen of this country I shall not take bribe nor give bribe. He call upon the youth to be not only be honest but they are responsible citizen of out great country. Dr Subba Rao was chairperson of the function.

 

Mr. P V. Rajagopal, President of Ekta Parishad urged election commission to protect activist who are struggling at the grasroot to protect democratic rights of the people and emphasized need for giving training to the elected representatives on the democratic values and their responsibilities.

 

Mr. Rajender Singh of Jal Biradari said that voters were the basic unit of the democracy and they must be ensured fearless voting. He called for election commission for code of conduct for the people’s representatives.

 

Mr. M.C. Mehta recalled his association with Dr. Subba Rao as a camper. He said his camps were inspiring youth to become the good citizens and he reiterated his commitment to support the campaign. Mr Pramod Chawla of National Network For India Trust – NNFI and Ms Anupa Siddhu, Director Lady Irwin College gave wholehearted support to the campaign. She has been actively involved in the campaign. She has been motivating students to take part in the campaign. 

 

The colleges of Delhi University including Lady Irwin College, SGTB Khalsa College and Shri Ram College of College, participated in a contest for poster and slogan for the campaign. The winners were received th prizes during the launch.   The SMS service was also launched during the function.

 

Mr Gyan Singh presented the vote the thanks and the programme was conducted by Mr.Vagish Kumar Jha and attended by hundred of youth and prominent citizens.
