SUSTAINABILITY: OUr Challenge. Our Future.

 

Sustainability does not only refer to maintaining environmental balance and renewal. Sustainability encapsulates three facets of life: the environment, society and the economy. We live our lives in the overlaps and intersections of these facets, and our actions and attitudes help shape them. Their changing shapes in turn affect the way we are able to live our lives. The negative effects of unsustainable behaviour are not easily contained. As has been proven by the global crises in food, the economy and the environment, the concept of the global village has gone beyond being a useful analogy to being a hard reality, making clear the need to adopt a global sense of social responsibility.

 

With these things in mind, as the energizers of today and the holders of tomorrow, it is imperative that youth embrace the challenge of sustainability in its fullness as they help pave the way forward through the 21st century and beyond. Youth action, inclusion, and their full participation are key to developing today’s world for the generations of today and tomorrow and central to a sustainable existence.

Global Initiatives

Shoot Nations Photo Competition!

To commemorate the Day, young people (11 to 25) from all around the world can submit photographs and drawings to participate in a global photography competition "Shoot Nations". A selection of photographs will be presented to the United Nations and displayed at UN Headquarters from 3-14 August in commemoration of International Youth Day. How you can celebrate the day

 

Team up! It is a great opportunity to rally support and get key actors involved - Governments, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, businesses, and young people - to focus on what has been done to further the World Programme of Action for Youth.

 

Organize! Hold forums, public discussions and information campaigns in support of young people focusing on youth issues and how they can be addressed.

 

Celebrate! Plan and organize performances everywhere to showcase - and celebrate – the fact that youth contribute to the societies in which they live. Convene exchanges and dialogues focusing on the rich and varied skills, interests and aspirations of young people.

 

Take action! A major focus of the Day is practical action to further encourage the empowerment and participation of youth in the processes and decisions that affect their lives. The media have especially important role to play in support of the observance of the Day to promote public awareness of youth issues.

 

The United Nations Programme on Youth is encouraging youth organizations around the world to host community barter fairs for International Youth Day. Remember, with bartering there is no money involved, only pure exchange of goods and services.

Background of International Youth Day

 

The General Assembly on 17 December 1999 in its resolution 54/120, endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.

The Assembly recommended that public information activities be organized to support the Day as a way to promote better awareness of the World Programme of Action for Youth to the Year 2000 and Beyond, adopted by the General Assembly in 1995 (resolution 50/81).

Indo- Pakistan Youth Dialogue in Pune

 

To promote youth to youth dialogue between youth of Pakistan and India, CYDA, Pune in association with many other youth organizations in India alongwith CYDA-Pakistan, is organizing a weeklong programme from 2^nd to 7^th October 2009 in Pune, Maharashtra. Around 25 Youth from Pakistan and 50 young people (age between 18 to 25) from India who are associated with various youth organizations will be to invite in the Dialogue.

 

Peace, Diversity, Pluralism, Democracy, Violence will be discussed during in the Dialogue.

 

The youth of today believes that the differences should be understood and not fought. People of the region shared thousands of years of history, heritage, and traditions. The focus of this camp is to understand its heritage and appreciate its diversity and pluralities exist in both the countries.

 

There will be reasonable registration fee of Rs 2000 each participant inclusive of food and accommodation.

Youth Camp for Yamuna River

 

“Yamuna is a life line river” is the focus the Youth Camp which discuss the problem, challenges, solution, programmes and framework.

 

A Three-day, August 7-9, 2009, a residential youth camp for awareness on Yamuna and it's problems is being organized by ROW Foundation, Water Community India, Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Servants of People's Society (Delhi), global warming, environment, rapidly decreasing water level of rivers and it's implications will be discussed during the workshop.

 

Personalities who will attend the program includes Prof. Ramakrishna koduri (Water and Environment Specialist), Prof. Vikram Soni (Natural heritage first), Shri Onkar Chand (Servants of People's Society), Mr. Mahesh Dutt Sharma (Gandhi Smarak Nidhi), Mr Diwan Singh (Yamuna Satyagraha), Shri Kapil Mishra (Youth 4 Yamuna), Mr Rajesh Dokwal (Nature Foundation), filmmaker Rakesh Khatri, Mr. Shambhu Dutt Sharma (Gandhi Satyagraha Briged)

Cinemela Film Fest for young filmmakers

 

The 4th edition of Cinemela Film Fest for young filmmakers is to be organized in Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi from 17-20 September, 2009. The details on the festival and its previous editions are on the fest web page: www.cinemela.youthv.com.

New Indian Government promise for more focus on Youth Development

 

The new Indian Government took charge with the commitment for consolidation of the existing programmes for Employment, Education, and Health that directly affects the YOUNG PEOPLE.

 

On 4th June 2009, Honourable President of India, Mrs Pratibha Singh Patil address the joint session of both houses parliament.

 

Mrs Patil assured the house that new government on concerted action for the welfare of women, youth, children, other backward classes, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, minorities, the differently-abled and the elderly along with strengthened social protection.

 

The government will be on making quality education a right through the enactment of the Right to Free and Compulsory Education. The new government will take several measures to promotion for middle and higher education.

 

Mrs. Patil mentioned that over 50 percent of India’s population is below 25 years of age and their creative energy is greatest strategic resource for country. “The challenge is to invest in their education, employability and employment. India has the capacity to contribute to a fourth of the global work force if it invests in skill development of its youth. Education which provides employable skills holds the key for equal opportunities for Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Minorities.”

 

Besides making massive investment in education, new government will focus on the national skill development initiative that has commenced operation with the very ambitious goal of creation of 500 million skilled people by 2022 so that we realize the demographic dividend.

 

Under river cleaning programme, the Voluntary National Youth Corps which could take up creative social action around the river cleaning and beautification programme beginning with the river Ganga.

 

’Enabling non government organizations in the area of development action seeking government support through a web-based transaction on a government portal in which the status of the application will be transparently monitorable.”

 

In final word of her speech Mrs Patil said “Our young people are tearing down the narrow domestic walls of religion, region, language, caste, and gender that confine them. The nation must invest in their hope. My Government will ensure that its policies for education and science and technology are imbued with a spirit of innovation so that the creativity of a billion people is unleashed. The next ten years would be dedicated as a Decade of Innovation. It may be a symbolic gesture but an important gesture to drive home the need to be innovative in finding solutions to our many challenges.”

 

President further address on youth problem, “India’s young population is naturally restless and wants to see change quickly. My Government carries the weight of their dreams. Together let us dedicate ourselves to making each day of the next five years, a day closer to the realization of their dreams.”

 

Indian Rail Ministry announces schemes for girl child and young people.

 

The proposed budget of Railways announces various concession for youth, children and women for current year.

 

Yuva (Youth)Trains:

Due to economic difficulties poor youth are not able to travel on normal trains. To keep observation Raiways will run “Yuva Trains” dedicated specially for the young generation.

 

These trains will be introduced between major cities to ensure that the youth and low income groups can travel at low rates between these cities.

 

The new low-priced fast train service will be started to connect youth in rural hinterlands to major metros/cities. The train will provide air conditioned seated accommodation and will run from point to point for distances ranging 24 from 1000 km to 2500 km. The fare will be Rs 299 for distances up to 1500 km and Rs 399 for distances up to 2500 km.

 

A weekly service will be introduced as a pilot service within three months in the following sections a) Mumbai to Delhi b) Delhi to Kolkata.

 

Free rail passes for Students:

The girls child will get the free monthly season tickets for second class travel between school and home for girl

students up to graduation and for boy students up to 12th standard will be extended to students attending Madrasa, High Madrasa and senior Madrasa.

 

Only Ladies Special:

To keep in mind the considerable difficulties faceby working women while travelling for work. Rail Minister announced ‘Only Ladies’ EMU train services in Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata suburban on the pattern of Mumbai suburban. These services will run for the convenience of women passengers during office hours.

 

Youth speak out to International Leaders

 

The Youth Event of the 2^nd Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations (AoC) on 4-5 April brought nearly 100 youth together in Istanbul, Turkey, to ensure that youth could contribute to the Alliance´s aims of improving understanding and cooperation among nations and peoples across cultures and religion.

During the youth leg of the Forum, a framework for a planned Youth Advisory Committee was also developed. This committee which will work with the AoC on the implementation and evaluation of its Youth Strategy and help coordinate the Global Youth Movement for the Alliance of Civilizations.

 

The youth participants also worked to prepare concrete recommendations directed at the main Forum. The policy-oriented recommendations aimed at shaping the deliberations and outcomes of the meeting.

 

12 August: International Youth Day 2009

The theme for International Youth Day 2009 is Sustainability: Our Challenge, Our Future.

 

Sustainability encapsulates three facets of life: the environment, society and the economy, and sustainable development can only occur where these three intersect in symbiotic fashion. Therefore, in order to embrace the challenge of sustainability in its fullness, we must all adopt a global sense of social responsibility.

THE CAMPAIGN: Dignity for all

Youth for Unity and Voluntary Action (YUVA India), the Four Slum Regional Network (Thailand), the Nairobi People’s Settlement Network (NPSN), Ekta Parishad (India), Union National dos Moradias Popular (Brazil), the European Anti Poverty Network, the International Alliance of Inhabitants, and Dignity International are preparing to launch a campaign on Dignity for all in October 2009.

The campaign will focus on pushing governments to respect, protect and fulfill the rights of people in urban and rural areas whose realities are currently being ignored by the state. These are people, families and communities that are either not taken into account by public policy or deliberately under attack by state or non state actors with the support of the state.

Because they are poor, considered illegal, or occupying land illegally, because they do not fit in the state’s structure of life and work, they are systematically ignored or persecuted. This campaign is thus going to call attention to these groups and the violations they are victims of as a result of their way of life, and socio economic status.

6^th UNESCO Youth Forum in Paris

 

UNESCO is currently organizing the 6^th UNESCO Youth Forum, which will take place from 1-3 October 2009 in Paris as an integral part of the 35^th UNESCO General Conference.

 

The Youth Forum will give its youth participants the crucial opportunity to exchange views, share experiences, and identify common opportunities for future commitment and actions.

 

The main theme of the 6^th Youth Forum is “Investing out of the crisis: towards a partnership between UNESCO and youth organizations”.

 

This theme will be complemented by a cross-cutting theme on “Youth participation - UNESCO Youth Forum, a long term approach”

 

The Forum will result in a final report containing key recommendations made by youth participants which will be presented at the 35^th General Conference.

 

Youth delegates will be nominated by UNESCO Member States as members of their official delegations. (The delegates age 18-24 years old)

International Youth Forum 2009

On

Climate Change and Green Development

August 18-25, 2009, Seoul, Republic of Korea

 

The National Council of Youth Organizations in Korea aongwith Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, the Republic of Korea will organize the 20^th International Youth Forum, focusing on climate change, one of the extended environmental problems, and green development considered to be pursued by all humans.

 

The Forum will be held from August 18^th to the 25^th in Seoul, South Korea, We look forward to receiving 120 young people to participate in the Forum.

 

The objectives includes to provide an opportunity which youths can become aware of phenomena due to climate change and share conversation on it; to make youths get involved in dealing with climate change and in the process of green development; and to strengthen and improve cooperation and mutual interest amongst youth in the world.

 

The Forum is open for the Youths between the ages of 18 and 30, who are interested in the topic. The interested youth must have the intermediate level of English proficiency and who study in related field or have experienced relevant work at NGOs or IGOs are preferred.

 

There is no registration fee and organizer will provide all local hospitality in Korea. There is provision to provide the partial travel grant to select youth.

4^th Int. Student’s Peace Festival

 

Student’s Peace Festival will be held from September 27 to October 1, 2009 in Chandigarh and organized by Yuva Satta. This is festival includes the Peace Parade, Carnival games, Make and take crafts, Multi-cultural performances, Peace Talks & Peace Stalls, Magic Shows & Face Painting, Film Shows & Music to UNITE, Nature trails & discussions of Environmental issues, Clowning & Fancy Dress Cat-walk, One Sky One World kite fly etc..

 

The main objectives are to promote peace, equality and living in harmony with nature. The organizer is expecting about 500 Students from all over India.

 

The organizers will provide the all local hospitality. There is no travel grant available therefore participants  have take care of their travel to Chandigarh. The last date for registration is July 30, 2009.

UNAIDS calls for a

virtual elimination of

mother to child transmission of HIV by 2015

 

GENEVA, 21 May 2009 – During the week of the World Health Assembly, UNAIDS’ executive director met with more than 80 Health Ministers to underscore UNAIDS’ commitment in supporting countries to achieve their universal access goals.

UNAIDS outlined key priority areas in which joint action by the United Nations will make a significant difference to the AIDS response and a positive contribution to the broader development agenda. Realising results in the identified areas will have a direct impact on halting and reversing the AIDS epidemic.

Many of the priority areas call for urgent and effective actions which save lives including preventing the transmission of HIV from mothers to their children and providing ongoing care and treatment for women, their partners and their children.

Evidence shows that timely administration of antiretroviral drugs to HIV-positive pregnant women significantly reduces the risk of HIV transmission to their babies. It is a proven, inexpensive, and effective intervention. Despite this, latest estimates show that in 2007, only 33% of HIV-positive pregnant women received the necessary treatment and only 21% of women in low- and middle-income countries were tested for HIV as part of their antenatal care. Progress in this area can only be achieved by integrating programmes which prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to their children into the broader reproductive health agenda.

“We can prevent mothers from dying and babies from becoming infected with HIV. That is why I am calling for a virtual elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV by 2015,” said Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS. “This is one of the main priority areas for UNAIDS, UNICEF, WHO and UNFPA to act on.”

Another focus area will be to prevent people living with HIV from dying of tuberculosis. TB is a preventable and curable disease yet it is one of the leading causes of death for people living with HIV. Around 80% of people living with HIV are thought to be co-infected with TB in sub-Saharan Africa yet globally only 2% of people living with HIV were screened for TB in 2007. Diagnosing and treating TB for people living with HIV will be a vital step forward in the response.

The other priority areas include: ensuring people living with HIV receive life saving treatment; protecting drug users from becoming infected with HIV; removing laws, policies, practices, stigma and discrimination that block effective responses to HIV; stopping violence against women and girls; empowering young people to protect themselves from HIV; and enhancing social protection for people affected by HIV.

The ultimate impact of joint action in these areas will be to avert HIV infections and deaths from AIDS. UNAIDS will commit human and financial resources to scale up joint programmes of support, and clear accountability indicators will be developed to track progress.

New Lok Sabha has younger MPs

Women Members Cross 10% Mark For First Time In India’s History

 

With 79 MPs under 40 years of age and 36 members who are at least 70 years old, the 15th Lok Sabha is a fine blend of youth and experience. Although the new Lok Sabha has a higher number of under-40 members compared with the last, the average age of the House is higher — at 53.03 years, this is the third oldest House so far.

The 13th LS was the oldest House with the average age of members being 55.5 years. By comparison, in the last LS it was 52.7 years. With members averaging just 46.5 years in age, the first LS was among the youngest. The average age has since been increasing generally, though this trend is far from uniform. For instance, the 12th Lok Sabha was the youngest House so far, with an average of just 46.42 years.

Data also shows no direct correlation between age and the number of fresh members in the House because a majority of first-time MPs typically have had legislative experience at state assemblies or the RS. And, contrary to the notion that our netas are particularly old, the average age in other parliaments of the world is about the same as in India. MPs in the current House of Commons in the UK were 50.6 years when elected in 2005, while Japanese MPs were 52.3 years old when elected.

 

Ram Sundar Das (88), the giantkilling JD(U) MP from Hajipur who defeated Ram Vilas Paswan, is the oldest member of the House while 26-year-old Muhammed Hamdulla Sayeed, the Congress MP from Lakshadweep, is the youngest.

 

Although the women’s reservation Bill proposing 33% reservation for women in Parliament was not passed despite repeated attempts to table it, the new Lok Sabha has the highest number of women MPs ever elected in to the Lok Sabha. At 58, the 15th Lok Sabha has 13 more women MPs than the last House and nine more than the previous best of 49 in the 13 Lok Sabha.

 
The representation of women members has crossed the 10% mark for the first time in Indian history. However, this is still low in comparison with parliaments of the industrialized countries. For i nstance, UK, USA, Italy, Ireland and France have 19.3%, 16.3%, 16.1%, 14.2% and 13.9% women parliamentarians, respectively. The Sweden parliament, with 47% women MPs, has the best gender ratio in the world.

 
In terms of age and gender representation, the reserved category MPs have better averages than their general counterparts. There are 12.2% women MPs elected from reserved seats while only 10.2% of the general MPs are women. Similarly, the average age of the reserved category MPs is 51.8 years which is again lower than the general MPs whose ages averaged at 53.5 years.

PRESIDENT OF INDIA CONCERNED OVER

RISING INCIDENTS OF RAGGING

IN INSITUTES OF HIGHER EDUCATION

 

New Delhi, April 14, 2009. The President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil has expressed grave concern over the rising incidents of ragging in certain institutions of higher education across the country.

 

The President has urged students, especially senior students in institutes of higher learning to be more responsible in their dealings with their juniors. She believes senior students have a greater responsibility to make their juniors feel at home in their new environment. Smt. Patil has observed that unfortunately there were several instances where the practice of ragging has escalated to the level of torture amounting to crime. Such irresponsible behaviour would cause serious apprehensions in the minds of new entrants and their parents. Universities and colleges are centres of learning and for developing mutual respect, friendship and understanding.

 

Their sanctity cannot be vitiated year after year at the start of an academic season by those who indulge in mindless ragging. The President has called upon the State Governments, University and College authorities to be vigilant and strict towards offenders and to take special efforts to prevent students from resorting to such acts of violence in the campuses of educational institutions. The State Governments may also consider appropriate legislation to tackle this menace in the college and University premises in order to provide credible deterrence.

Asia Regional Workshop by Commonwealth Youth Centre

Youth & Peace Building held

 

If we study the society today, we can find lots of differences. We can easily find out that it is not the same society, which it used to be. There is lots of conflicts and violence in the society that was never before. As most of the countries of Asia have multi- cultural society, it is necessary to maintain unity in diversity.

• What is this conflict?
• What causes the violence?
• How can peace be built in the society?
• How youth can play an active role in peace building?

 

To find out the answers of these questions, youths got together in Chandigarh, India. It was Commonwealth Youth Programme and Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, who organized this workshop on YOUTH AND PEACE BUILDING from 9^th to 13^th February 2009. The place was the Chandigarh and the venue was Asia Centre of Commonwealth Youth Programme. The selected youth from Asian Countries attended the Workshop. Indian Committee of Youth Organizations (ICYO) nominated Ms Ms Lipi Joshi to attend the event.

 

The workshop started on 9^th evening. The workshop was inaugurated Commonwealth Secretary General, Mr. Kamlesh Sharma. In inaugural function Mr. Raj K. Mishra welcomed participants. Dr. Anneth Methews from Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) delivered her speech. The vote of thanks presented by Mr. Aminul Islam Khan. Programme Manager. Later in evening the culture programme was organized.

Dr. Pramod Kumar spoke on Meaning, Factors contributing to and Relevance of Peace building in Today’s Context. He said that PEACE IS ACTION AND IT IS NOT THE ABSENCE OF VIOLENCE. According to him three types of violence: 1) Structured violence, 2) Privileged Violence and 3) Underprivileged Violence. He said that the youth can play their role on different level Before violence, During Violence & After Violence. He also talked about cultural violence.

 

Dr. Priyankar Upadhyay from Banaras Hindu University has two presentations 1) Genesis of Conflict: An Analysis and 2) Instruments/ Methodologies of Conflict Management/Resolution.

 

Dr. S.N. Subba Rao, Director National Youth Project and Chairman Indian Committee of Youth Organizations (ICYO) delivered his speech on Role of Youth in Conflict Management/ Resolution.

 

Dr Subba Rao started with JAI JAGAT, a beautiful song. He told that there are about 1652 dialects in India and therefore it is very essential to maintain UNITY IN DIVERSITY. He called conflict, the restlessness of man. He quoted “War begins in the minds of men and hence the defense of peace must be constructed in the minds of men.”

 

He also encouraged participants by giving some examples from his camps. He advised the participants for betterment saying “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

 

He suggested three remedies for peace building 1) Faith in the goodness of human being, 2) Service to mankind and 3) Prayer. He asked all the participants to close the eyes for five minutes and be relaxed. All did it and all found it very refreshing. It was really a nice session.

 

The groups discussed various issues including 1) what do you mean by conflict and how you do define conflict fro political, social, economic and ethnic point of view. 2) Is conflict intrinsic in human society? 3) How to manage/ resolve conflict- your role as a young person. 4) What strategies for peace building do you wish to propose?  The discussion was very thought provoking and various innovative ideas came-up during the discussion.

 

The each country made the presentation on Day three. One behalf of Indian participants Paridhi David and Parag made the presentation. 

 

Dr. Ronky Ram spoke on Youth Engagement in Dialogue, Mediation and Negotiation while Dr. Renuka Dagar presented her view on Post Conflict Peace Building: Role of Youth in Rehabilitation and Reintegration. Her presentation followed by group exercise.

 

Day four started with the talk of Mr. Rajasekeran, Director RGNIYD. He shared his experience as an IAS officer when he was District Magistrate and how he settled a dispute. Because it was a real example, it gave great inspiration to all.

 

Prof. S. L. Sharma spoke about Rights Based Approaches to Peace Building. He spoke about the value of democracy and social development and how they are inter-linked. He related the Peace with Human Rights and Democracy. According to him Peace is the state of social harmony. He added that justice is a primary condition for Peace.

 

Dr. Manjeet Singh spoke on Social Justice and Inclusion. He included peace and suppression and social system and the condition of marginalized people.

 

Mr. Aminul Islam Khan made the presentation on Respect and Understanding- the Mandate, Context and Rationale – on the Commission’s Report “Civil Paths to Peace”. The panel discussion on Inequality, grievance and history and Participation, Media and Education and Young People was held and panelists included Prof. Akhtarul Wassey, Mr. Raj K. Mishra and Lucy from CHRI.

 

Then was the time for the Valedictory Function. The Chief Guest of valedictory function was Mr. Preedip Mehra, Advisor to Administrator, Chandigarh. In his valedictory address he praise the youth power by saying “Youth are the agents of change. History is witness to the fact that they have always played an important role in any revolution that has come about in society”.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Raj K Mishra, Regional Director, CYP Asia Centre said: “Judging by the level of enthusiasm of the participants, the objective with which the workshop was organized seems to have been fulfilled. We feel confident that these young men and women will go back and work effectively towards peace building in their respective countries.”

Asia-Pacific Countries Set Out Course of Action for Disaster Management

The three day meeting, which ended 27^th March 2009 in Bangkok organized at UN ESCAP, brought together more than 200 delegates from governments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and the private sector from Asia and the Pacific countries. This was the first meeting of the Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR) which was established by the 62 member governments of the United Nations ESCAP last year.

 

The committee agreed to take a series of measures to improve their cooperation in sharing information and experiences in disaster risk reduction – a key issue to be tackled in this most disaster-prone region in the world.

 

Participants pointed out that while the Asia-Pacific region accounts for 42 per cent of the world’s natural disasters and a disproportionate 65 per cent of their victims, knowledge on disaster risk reduction is usually dispersed and out of reach of those who need to make decisions and take action.

The 17^th Policy session of Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) will focus on Agriculture, Rural development, Land, Drought, Desertification and Africa in this year meeting.

 

To give the inputs of the CBOs and NGOs for finalizing the country position on the above, in partnership with Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), a consultation workshop is being organized on 7th April 2009 at CEE, Ahmedabad.

International Study Programme: Global Challenges for

Youth with Disabilities - In Pursuing Rights

 

 The Korean Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities KSRPD) will conduct an international study programme to empower young persons with disabilities.

 

The objective of the study is to provide youth with disabilities with opportunities to build their capacity, so that they can full-fill their lives, and contribute to the national and global community in the future; bridge the gab between disability experts and persons with disability, and the gab between people with disabilities and without, through working together as a team, and raise public awareness of ‘Ability’ of young persons with disabilities.

 

This 10 day programme will be held mid August in Seoul, Korea.

 

The Young people with disabilities, aged between 18~30 years, those having skill of English both for speaking and writing an article for the programme will be invited for this study. UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women Issues Annual Call for Proposals

The United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund) has launched a global annual call for proposals to support country-level efforts to end violence against women and girls. Civil society organizations, governments, and UN Country Teams in partnership with governments and civil society are invited to submit applications for a minimum of US$100,000 to a maximum of US$1 million for a duration of up to three years. UNESCO - Goi Peace Foundation Int. Essay Contest 2009

Through the annual essay competitions, UNESCO and the Goi Peace Foundation encourage young people to share their vision for the future. The theme for this year's contest is "The role of science in building a better world". Scientific progress has brought many benefits to humanity, while some applications of science have had adverse impacts. Through the competition young people will answer questions such as "What kind of science and technology do you think is needed for realizing a more equitable, prosperous and sustainable world for all?

National Youth Camp held in Port Blair, Andaman

 

The National Youth Project (NYP) had conducted another National Integration Youth Camp, which was held in Andaman from February 21 to 28, 2998. The camp attended by 426 youth from 30 states of India.

 

Shri Shailesh, IAS, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of youth Affair’s and sports, Government of India, inaugurated the camp on February 21, 2009, who come all the way from Delhi to Port Blair for this camp. Shri S. N. Jha, Secretary Sports Arts and Culture of Andaman Nicobar Administration was the Chief guest. At the inauguration the national integration nature of Andaman profile was emphasized not only is there communal harmony have one can even find families is which more then one religion co-exist. The inaugural program concluded with the linguistic integration tableau

 

Camper interact with Mrs Sonia Gandhi and Lt Governor of Andaman

All the 426 youths from 31 States gathered at the Raj Nivas on the 27^th evening and Smt. Sonia Gandhi was happy to meet them and listen to their patriotic song. Morning in frost of them, the met them all and they were happy. Lt. governor Lt. gen Bhupender Singh also joined the campers.

 

The schedule kept the youth all day busy, this includes the morning warm-up exercise, games, flag salutation, talent exchange classes, Groups discussion of burning issues for youth and in evening peace march in nearby areas which concluded with all Religions Prayers followed by cultural programme

 

Interestingly, the youths had programmes in the ship also on they had to travel 3 days on ship each way

 

 

National Integration Youth Camp held in Itanagar

 

National Youth Project organized the National Integration Youth Camp in Itangar, Arunachal Pradesh that was held from November 24 to December 1, 2008. The camp was attended by 357 youth 23 state of India.

 

There is need to build the spirit of peace, harmony and goodwill among the people of the northeast and strengthen the bonds of relationship between the people of northeast and mainland. YOUTH CAMPS and YOUTH EXCHANGE Programmes are the best media for achieving this objective. The camp was the good example of youth initiative to create the bond by local youth those took all the responsibility to make the success of the camp by all means.

Maharashtra: Deliver at a Govt. hospital and get Rs 800 

 

The Maharastra state government has decided to give Rs 800 as cash incentive to pregnant women who deliver at a civic or government hospital. The idea, said government officials, is to not only reduce maternal mortality rate, but also to increase the number of safe deliveries at hospitals.

 

The 'Matrutva Anudan Yojana', which is being implemented under the National Rural Health Misson, is already applicable. "All pregnant women, irrespective of caste, creed and income groups, will be given Rs 800 (Rs 400 for medicines, calcium and multi-vitamin pills and another Rs 400 for the institutional delivery).

 

National Policy on Prevention of Alcoholism and
Drug Abuse to be Formulated - Meira Kumar 

 

The Government is proposing to formulate a comprehensive National Policy on issues related to prevention of alcoholism and drug abuse. Addressing the 1st meeting of the National Consultative Committee on Drug De-addiction and rehabilitation recently held, Smt. Meira Kumar, Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment announced that soon a sub-committee would be made to make the first draft proposal of the National Policy.

 

Youth Climate Change Web page on FAO web

 

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has created a new Climate Change Web Portal which includes a section dedicated to Children and Youth. Information on current activities, resources and other initiatives can be accessed, including information on the International Drawing Competition "Our World, Our Climate, Our Food", a joint initiative of FAO and World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts that was launched to raise awareness on climate change and food security issues, as well as promote active involvement of children and youth. Fact File on Adolescent Health

 

The World Health Organization (WHO) has published a new "Fact File on Adolescent Health" that explores topics of concern to adolescents and provides strategies to improve their health across the globe.

 

The ‘fact file’ explains that adolescents have specific health and development needs, and that many face challenges that hinder their well-being, including poverty, a lack of access to health information and services, and unsafe environments. It shows how necessary interventions can save lives and foster a new generation of productive adults who better serve their communities. For more information log on:

United Nations: Guidelines on Improving Juvenile Justice

 

The document entitled "Guidance Note of the Secretary General - UN Approach to Justice for Children" was published by the United Nations in September 2008. The Note provides guiding principles and a framework for UN activities on justice for children at the national level within conflict and development contexts. It also aims to ensure that children, defined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child as all persons under the age of eighteen, are better served and protected by justice systems, including the security and social welfare sectors. Bihar's Month Long March to Promote Sanitation

 

To promote health through good hygiene practices the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) of the Government of Bihar, WaterAid and UNICEF took up a month long Gram Gaurav Yatra to promote sanitation in Bihar recently.

 

A Gram Gaurav Yatra is a 'solidarity march', where people march peacefully, gathering support as they go, not stopping until action is taken by those in power.

 

The Bihar march started on 28 January and finished on 28 February 2009.

This seven day training aims to equip the participants with communication skills, relationship skills, gender sensitization, realizing issues like identity, sexuality and reproductive health requirements of adolescents and young people. This training provides an opportunity to look into the very core and essence of individual, social/community issues and at the same time creates space to voice one’s opinion, share one’s perspective in groups. It is a participatory, adult learning program rather than lectures. It is full of group activities rather than seminars.

 

Over the years, CYDA has been providing this training program to national and international NGOs.  This time CYDA is organizing this summer program for youth between 18 to 30 years from 10th to 16th May 2009 in Pune. There are limited seats as each language group will be accommodated 30 persons only (15 girls/15 boys). This training will be conducted in English, Hindi and Marathi at the same time in different groups.

 

The registration fee is Rs.2750 for students below 25yrs of age and not sponsored by anybody, while Rs. 3750 (for those youth who are employed/sponsored by NGOs as well as support organizations. This cost is per person for 8 days inclusive of facilitation, food and accommodation during the program. If any queries regarding fee kindly revert back to us.

 

The participants need to arrive on 9^th May 2009 evening and shall leave on 17^th Morning after breakfast.   Those who require more information as well as registration form kindly write back to us. This program is limited to youth from India only.

World Bank invites proposals for Development Marketplace

 

The Development Marketplace (This regional competition is part of the Development Marketplace, a competitive grant programme that identifies and funds innovative, early stage development projects with high potential for development impact and replication) invites proposals from all South Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) under the theme: “Family and Community Approaches to Improve Infant and Young Child Nutrition”.

 

An open call for proposals was launched for NGOs, civil society organizations and others to submit their proposals by, March 31, 2009.

 

Proposals will then undergo a thorough assessment process involving development experts from the World Bank and the greater nutrition and development community, from which about 70 short listed candidates will be invited to present their ideas at the South Asia Regional Marketplace event to be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in August 4-6, 2009.

 

Up to 25 winners, selected by a jury of distinguished nutrition and development experts, will receive award grants of up to US$ 40,000 to implement their project during an 18-month period.  For more details log on

Joint Rally of left forces at Ahmadabad on 17th March, 2009

 

20 thousand tribal, peasants, workers, Dalits & Minorities are expected to come

 

Dear Comrades and Friends,

 

Mass organizations and left parties have decided to March jointly at Ahmedabad on 17th March, to highlight the people’s agenda for advancing long-term struggle and also opposing the persisting policy of corporate led development in the state on the name of making Gujarat ‘vibrant’. 20 thousand Adivasis, Peasants & Workers along with Dalits & Minorities are expected to come Ahmedabad exploring the new possibilities for making third alternative in the polity of Gujarat based on mass movements instead of building opportunist alliances. As you all know the fact that Gujarat has now become an experimental place for practicing neo-liberal economic policies along with its communal and autocratic agenda of state. That is why industrialist Ratan tata has chosen Gujarat for Naino and easily succeeded to receive a huge subsidy of 30 thousand carores from state government. The state government of Gujarat is now busy to attract other industrialists too, at the cost of heavy prices, which has to pay by people of Gujarat. Modi Govt. is providing free land along with cultivated lands under SEZ, infrastrural facilities and other huge subsidies to the corporate houses at one hand, while the other hand people of Gujarat are being dispossessed from basic amenities like education, health, employment opportunities and other livelihood resources. Unbearable agricultural crisis including formers suicide and debt, increasing hunger & poverty, low wages for workers, job cut of diamond workers (recently about 15 lakhs workers lost their jobs), declining public distribution system (PDS), failure of NREGA in the state, huge migration from rural areas, cast discrimination and human rights violation could be seen everywhere in the state, which is enough to expose the pitiable situation of Gujarat. Adivasis are not getting legal rights yet over possessed forest lands, despite after one year of the enactment of "Scheduled tribe and other forest dwellers (recognition of forest rights) act, 2006. Implementation of the act is being not only delayed but also ignorant by Govt. officials. Forest and revenue departments are not getting ready to approve genuine claims of tribal, while displacement of tribal are continued from their cultivated lands. Along with several incidents of repression continuing in other part of state, twenty-seven activists of lok sangharsh morcha are asked for externment from four districts through notice issued by sub-divisional collector in Tapi. The displaced Adivasis of Ukai and Sardar Sarovar Dam are still waiting for justiciable rehabilitation, while they have no access for minimal facilities of living.

 

 

Due to similar economic policies and common repressive measures following by Congress at the center and in its ruling states, Congress is unable to take initiative as strong opposition party in Gujarat. We have never seen a fighting congress in Gujarat, which now they are falsely claiming, against the misrule of BJP government rather they always looking like opportunist outfit compromising with the Govt. all times for fulfilling their wasted interests. In the name of fighting terrorism both BJP and congress have fabricated warmonger against Pakistan and now, advocating to make India as an autocratic police state.

 

Rally will ask people of Gujarat to build a real opposition in the state, so that fight for pro-people development could be intensified. State level campaign, known as 'Gujarat Jan Abhiyan', would be also launched by participants for raising people's issues and for the emergence of real political alternative in Gujarat. Rally will make an appeal to all left and democratic forces working in Gujarat for coming together and join the campaign.

 

Lok Sangharsh Morcha, New Socialist Movement, CPI (ML) liberation, Socialist Unity Center, JSM are participating in this rally. CPI is also expected to join.

Training for trainers on Life Skills

Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) is implementing Adolescent Health and Development Project. In this project one of the major agenda is training a cadre of trainers on Life Skills. RGNIYD is planning to develop trainers on Life Skills by conducting five days training of trainers programme.

In this regard, we invite applications from trainers to participate in the programme “Training of trainers on Life Skills” at its campus in Sriperumbudur,  Tamilnadu. The trained trainers will have to support RGNIYD as and when required in the area of training.

Commonwealth Day

Commonwealth must safeguard and promote its young people

 

The association’s task is to look straight ahead and ask how it can continue serving a new generation in 2009 and beyond

Surrounded by layers of dust and paint in his workshop, 21-year-old Franky Phillip routinely works 18-hour days making arts and crafts, which he then sells to vendors based around Grand Fond village in the south-east of the Caribbean small island state of Dominica.

 

There is a big demand on the island for the cups, key chains, piggy banks and model helicopters, all made using coconuts and designed by Franky, who has seen his business grow markedly since it was set up in 2005.

 

Franky is a beneficiary of the Commonwealth Youth Credit Initiative, a programme that offers loans, training, education and business support to entrepreneurs. This training includes advice on formulating business plans and how to effectively manage a company.

 

This initiative was piloted in Guyana, India, Solomon Islands and Zambia, and has since been replicated in a further 12 countries.

 

“Through training the Commonwealth helped me recognize the potential for establishing my own business,” said Franky. “They helped me lay the necessary foundations, which have stimulated me to spend more and more time working on my designs.”

 

Franky was one of the special guests invited to the Commonwealth’s headquarters at Marlborough House in London on 9 March 2009 for Commonwealth Day. 2009 marks the 60th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth, where the group left behind its colonial past, becoming a free and equal association, which has grown from 8 countries to 53 members.

 

Another young person present at the Commonwealth Day celebrations was Sarika Katoch, 26, a youth development worker from Dharamshala in India. She is also a regional Youth Caucus Representative for India and the Chair for Asia, a position which has seen her become heavily involved in Commonwealth activities. One such activity she works on is taking part in plays organised in local communities, where actors perform anywhere from on the streets to in schools, educating people about HIV/AIDS.

 

Sarika was also part of the Commonwealth Observer Group present in Ghana for the December 2008 elections, where she was the Youth representative on the team that was led by Baroness Valerie Amos.

 

On being asked whether the Commonwealth is relevant today, she responded with another question: “How can national and international policies be made which affect young people without even consulting us? That is where the Commonwealth comes in.”

 

“The Commonwealth is an organization which treats young people as the solution by giving us a platform to speak out and make our voices heard,” added Sarika, who was part of a planning team looking ahead to the Commonwealth Youth Forum, which takes place just before the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad and Tobago this November. This Forum will offer young people an opportunity to engage on a high level and provide an input into the youth agenda in countries across the Commonwealth.

 

Out of more than 2 billion citizens in the Commonwealth, around half are under 25 years old. It is these young people who the Commonwealth must continue to serve, HM Queen Elizabeth II said in her message for Commonwealth Day.

 

To help them make the best of their opportunities, our young men and women therefore need the opportunity to become active and responsible members of the communities in which they live, said the Queen, who is Head of the Commonwealth. “I am pleased that the Commonwealth recognizes this, and is determined to continue to put young people at its centre.”

 

She added: “Together, we should continue to work hard to deal with today’s challenges so that the young people of today’s Commonwealth can realize their aspirations. In that way, we can look to the future with confidence.”

 

Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma asked what sort of twenty-first century today’s young will inherit.

 

“The Commonwealth has always had an eye on the people and the tasks of tomorrow,” he said. “Now, it must be prescient again in safeguarding and promoting the guarantors of the best hopes for its future: its young people.”
