Youth to get training on disaster preparedness

A five-day training programme on Children-led Disaster Preparedness got
underway today at Youth Hostel here with its inauguration by Shri Lucas
Robert, Director, Sports, Arts & Culture. Altogether 23 participants from
Katchal, Kamorta, Teressa, Chowra and Nancowry Islands along with the NYKS
project staff are attending the training programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Lucas Robert expressed his happiness for
organizing this disaster preparedness program and urged the tribal youths
who are attending the programme from Nancowry groups of Islands, to share
their knowledge & skill acquired from the training with their respective
communities. He also pointed out that the tribal people should not construct
their houses by the sea-shore as this will increase disaster during tsunami.
In his address, Shri Azim, Joint-Director of Sports, Arts & Culture said
the youth should take active part in learning the disaster preparedness
management.
Shri SR Biswas, Regional Coordinator, NYKS briefed on the history of
Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan & its work in the context of A & N Islands. He
said that this project was started in the month of September 2006. During
this period many activities like baseline data analysis, training of
trainers have already taken place in the project area.
Shri Sasank from 'Save the Children' delivered the key note address on
the disaster preparedness project already launched in Nancowry groups of
Islands. He expressed about the importance of Disaster Preparedness
Programme in A&N Islands as this area is disaster prone area.
While addressing the participants, Shri Rajkumar from Save the Children
emphasized on the behavior & attitude changes of the participants after the
training program, a communication received here said.
