going to filea petition in the Supreme Court to ask for diversion of forest land
for therehabilitation of tsunami victims.The administration wanted to divert
25,000 acres for settlement of tsunamivictims. But defence minister A K Antony,
visiting the islands, has insteadsuggested to the lieutenant governor of the
islands that if theadministration moves the apex court for an area of 10,000
acres then theUnion government would be supportive of the move for the sake of
the tsunamivictims.While clearance for forest diversion is required from the
ministry ofenvironment and forests, the Supreme Court's clearance too will be
requiredfor the primarily tribal reserves under a special act for the islands.
