Dear Friends !
The Dugongs are protected as Schedule-I endangered
species by Wildlife Protection Act 1972 in India. In
India it is found on coasts of Gulf of Kutch in
Gujarat, Gulf of Mannar, Palk Strait in Tamilnadu, and
Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
We are conducting a nationwide survey project on
Dugong in India. The project is sponsored by Ministry
of Environment and Forests, Government of India. It is
the first comprehensive survey of its kind in India
and an important step in the conservation of this
highly threatened species.
Unlike dolphins, Dugongs is very shy and illusive
animal making it difficult to observe in waters.
However during the intensive field work Myself
(Principal Investigator of the Project) and Mr.
Parimal Solanki researcher on the project have been
lucky to observe the species in Andamans group of
islands very recently in mid February and April.
We could swim with this gentle animal for long time
and have been able to observe it feeding and swimming
very closely in waters of Andamans. It has been the
lifetime experience for us as we have been able to
observe it in its natural habitats and habits. During
the field trip we have been able to observe at least 3
different Dugong, which raises our hopes for their
future in Indian waters if proper protection and
management actions are taken.
