"rethinking tourism certification" internet
conference for Indigenous Peoples

St. Paul, MN May 25, 2004.

From May 31 through July 2, Indigenous Tourism Rights International will
open a (cyber)space for Indigenous voices to weigh in on tourism
certification. Participants from Indigenous communities, organizations
and
tourism businesses will share their experiences, concerns, and successes
with tourism certification while developing a new vision and possible
alternatives.

Over the past decade, international organizations have applied
international
certification and labels to everything from shade-grown coffee beans to
socially responsible ice cream. These experiments have produced varying
results. Ecotourism and sustainable tourism certification programs have
also
produced conflicting results.

As international NGOs press ahead with ecotourism certification, many
Indigenous organizations wonder if establishment certification initiatives
will benefit them or lead to their further marginalization and
disenfranchisement. Ethical marketing, the development of standards, and
what it means to be Indigenous-owned and operated will be discussed -- all
within the framework of Indigenous rights and self-development.

"Dialogue across continents," reports Tourism Rights' director, Deborah
McLaren, "will assist Indigenous communities worldwide in developing an
alternative vision for the development and promotion sustainable
projects."

In addition to speaking to with Indigenous experts and activists,
conference
participants will be able to access case studies, background documents,
and
discuss via internet and e-mail with each other. Conference hosts include
Crescencio Resendiz-Hernandez and Deborah McLaren. Special guests include
Victoria Tauli-Corpuz (Tebtebba Foundation, the Philippines); Rodrigo Ruiz
(Kaleap, Peru); Beatrice Blake and Anne Becher (co-authors of New Key to
Costa Rica); Kate Robinhawk (Centro Ecological Akumal, Quintana Roo,
Mexico); Luis Vivanco (University of Vermont); Luciano Minerbi (University
of Hawaii at Manoa); Jennifer Seif and Ada Chan (Fair Trade Tourism South
Africa); Rejent Gravel (Ecuador case study) and others.
Moderators are Norbert Hohl, Marie-Andree Delisle, and Milo Sybrant.
Ron Mader, host of www.planeta.com provided technical training and the
development of the website.

Indigenous Tourism Rights International, founded in 1995, hosts an
international network of Indigenous communities and organizations that
work
together on tourism issues, policies, technical assistance, and education.
In 2002, Tourism Rights hosted a groundbreaking global forum on Indigenous
Tourism in Oaxaca Mexico, which included representatives from
organizations
from every corner of the Western Hemisphere. This meeting was a direct
result to the marginalization of Indigenous voices and concerns during the
prepatory meetings and actual the International Year of Ecotourism
celebration in Quebec. As a result the participants created the "Oaxaca
Declaration," basic guidelines and protocols for developing tourism in
Indigenous territories which was delivered to the World Summit on
Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the
International
Year of Ecotourism Summit in Quebec, Canada.

tourism development in their communities are especially encouraged to
