Dear Dev,
If things are as grim as you've portrayed, they call for immediate
cognizance. The facts might be more tangible if you can share the names of the
NGOs who're introducing exotic varities of vegetation in the islands.
Additionally, if this is true, what has been the role of A&N Administration,
more specifically CARI and Agriculture Dept in clearing the way for the NGOs
to bring in exotic varieties of vgetation into the islands. Besides, what has
been the role of the islanders in objecting to such moves, if any?
Regards

Subject: [andamanicobar] The Roll of NGO’s in destroying Andaman’s Ecology.
The Roll of NGO's in destroying Andaman's Ecology.
Andaman Islands are known for its greenery, clean sea and pure natural beauty,
at the same time like a beautiful lady it is very sensitive. After tsunami,
using the opportunity people from out side these Islands started coming for
making as much money as possible, mainly those medium level NGOs, (Here I also
agree there were people who were genuine too).
What ever, I understand they have made a fortune out of it. Anyway I don't mind
and I don't care what ever they do, until and unless they start playing with
these Islands.
But that is what's happening these days; they have literally started playing
with our Islands.
They have started bringing alien breeds of vegetation (both for land and sea)
with out proper scientific research (Ya I know that I am not a Botanist or
Marine Biologist, but from what ever knowledge I have, I can well understand
that, it takes decades to understand the effect of an alien breads in an Island
ecology when the ecology is so sensitive. We can end up with a devastation,
destroying our coral reefs by the effect of new verities Sea Weeds and local
vegetation by an breed of Plant which can start overtaking other plants.
This is no normal situation, in many parts of the world the ecology has been
damaged by introduction of new vegetation and animal breeds. After lots of
research too it's very much impossible to come to a conclusion about the effect
of these changes. These kinds of changes can take effect in decades, so it may
not be an issue for the so called mainlanders, but for us who wants to live
here, we have to preserve what ever we have, already we are suffering from so
many problems caused by environmental disbalance.
The implications can be bad or it can be worse, These NGOs are getting corers of
rupees as donations from government and other bodies showing their intelligence
on paper and presentation by big management school graduates, mind you, who are
here in this business to earn money and not for any social work.
They are building new infrastructure like cold storage with govt money on the
name of poor farmers of Andaman and using them to do retail business of
vegetables imported from mainland.
This is the time for us to ask, and time for the administration to act. Let us
ask them where is the money invested? Who are the people who got benefited by
introducing the damage to our Islands?
We must stop this.

Dev
