Dear Friends,

Please find Survival's briefing about Barefoot India at http://www.survival=
-international.org/about/barefoot

Some time ago, a Survival fieldworker was travelling with some=20=20
government officials and others when the group was approached by a few=20=20
Jarawa, outside the Reserve. The Jarawa wanted to complain about=20=20
poacher encroachment and our fieldworker was asked to videotape the=20=20
incident, specifically to draw attention to this serious problem. She=20=20
was not the only one present who photographed the event. What is=20=20
important about this recording is that it allows the Jarawa their own=20=20
voice on an international stage for the first time.

Our fieldworker did not at any time enter the Reserve. She did not pay=20=20
or commission anyone to go into the Reserve on her behalf. She did not=20=20
contravene the Regulations that apply to the Reserve or (so far as we=20=20
have been able to establish) any other applicable law. Any reports to=20=20
the contrary are without foundation.

Survival's statement on use of pictures of the Jarawa is below.

Best wishes,
Miriam Ross
.....

Survival=92s use of pictures of the Jarawa

Survival is campaigning for the Jarawa=92s land to be protected, and for =
=20
their right to decide their own future to be respected. We do not=20=20
encourage or condone the entry of non-Jarawas into the Jarawa reserve,=20=20
except for small, dedicated teams visiting the Jarawa communities to=20=20
provide urgent health assistance or for other essential matters.

Where photographs of the Jarawa already exist, Survival uses them to=20=20
help raise awareness of the extreme threats faced by the tribe. In our=20=20
campaigning work, we aim to mobilise international public opinion to=20=20
prevent the violation of tribal peoples=92 rights. The use of images is =
=20
crucial in enabling members of the public to feel a connection with=20=20
tribal peoples, and to feel motivated to take action to support them.

Survival does not pay photographers for the use of pictures they have=20=20
taken of the Jarawa.

......

We help tribal peoples defend their lives, protect their lands and=20=20
determine their own futures.
