Tourism ministry seeks nod for leasing islands

NEW DELHI: The tourism ministry has sought Cabinet approval for leasing 23
islands in Lakshwadeep and Andamans to private operators.

Though the initiative to involve private sector in developing and managing
the islands was initiated under NDA government, the ministry was unable to
secure a Cabinet nod for taking it forward.

We have now reworked the proposal and tweaked the leasing norms to ensure
that these projects are viable for private operators. The proposal has
already been forwarded to the Cabinet and we are expecting a decision soon,
the official said.

The islands in Andamans proposed to be opened up are Havelock, Cinque,
Interview, Long Island, Little Andaman, Ross Island, Rut Land, North Mark
Bay, Neil and South Andamans.

The uninhabited land in these islands will be used for construction of
hotels and other facilities.
