folks.
Â
every house in port blair has coral kept in drawing as show piece and later
thrown into the back yard.recent photographs which had come in the same
discussion . if caught should be non bailable even the boat operators who
organise coral trip sell it to the tourist.
Â
the people even give these as gifts to their superiors.
Â
stringent actions can only prevent act like this.
as mentioned the pollution near carbynscove beach which has destroyed the entire
coral towards brooksbad side / quarry operation and dumpyard has to be stopped.

Poachers’ loot marine wealth in broad daylight while Department of
Forest and Police sleep tight

Staff Correspondent
Port Blair, Oct 26: It is a matter of shock and great surprise that the
natural resources of these Islands which are the main attraction of
tourists are being damaged and destructed in the broad daylight. People
dare to pick stealthy the natural resources like sea sand, corals,
timber etc. to earn their daily bread and butter that damage the scenic
beauty of these Islands and also the marine ecology badly. If these
natural resources are exhausted, there will be nothing for the tourists
to see and naturally the potentiality of the tourism sector that may
supplement the per capita income of these Islands will decrease drastically.
The ignorant people, who are indulged in such practices,
may not be aware of the consequences of the malpractice and may find it
an easy way of earning but the Department and Officials who are
appointed to save these natural resources from the hands of the
miscreant is doing their job or are sleeping at the wheel. The
Government endorses or sanctions heavy loads of fund to the Department
of Forest and Environment to save the natural resources of these Islands
and the Administration also supports the Department to protect the
natural resources of these Islands. But it seems that the Forest
Department and its staffs are not bothered at all to walk an extra mile
and save the ecology.
Recently, it is reported that some miscreants extracted live corals from
Chidiya Tapu, one of the tourist hotspots, in broad day light in
presence of the tourists and visitors. It is shocking that the
miscreants are not afraid of the consequences of such illegal act which
is a non-bailable offence. It was also shocking to note that there was
no Officer or representative of Forest Department or Police Department
to stop the illegal act. If natural resources of a hot tourist spots and
frequently visited place, are not safe, how the people can be assured
that the natural resources of these Islands which are spread throughout
the Islands in far-flung areas, will remain safe.
It is a matter of shame and regret that the concern Department is
failing to save the natural resources for which crores of hard earned
public money is spent every year.
On behalf of the people of these Islands, it is urged to the
Administration to look into the activity of the Department of Forest and
Environment and find out the loophole, which are responsible for the
failure of the Department in protecting the natural resources of these
Islands. Andaman Sheekha has exclusive pictures of the illegal
extraction of corals from Chidiya Tapu beach. The PCCF must conduct a
thorough inquiry in this regard.
