Shift Andaman’s fishermen colonies away from Coastal belt: Ray

Port Blair, Oct 28: The lone Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar
Islands have once again demanded to shift all the fishermen colonies,
spread over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, from the coastal belt area to
some safe locations. “It is sad to see that in almost all the Islands of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands, fishermen colonies are situated very close
to the sea, which poses serious risk for this community from probable
tsunamis and tidal waves,” Bishnu Pada Ray the Member of Parliament of
Andaman and Nicobar Islands told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
The Member of Parliament had recently visited all these
fishermen colonies of Mayabunder, Durgapur, Betapur, Rangat, Limbutala,
Uttara, Swaraj Gram, Panighat, Dairy Farm, Haddo, Junglighat and Kamorta
Islands and found that all these fishermen families are living on highly
risky zone, which is very close to the sea.
“In some places there is only a road between sea and
fishermen colonies and in case of any future tsunami these fishermen
will suffer maximum burnt of devastating waves,” Ray added. The Member
of Parliament has already taken up this matter with the Andaman and
Nicobar Administration and demanded to allot alternate land to these
fishermen colonies.
“Sadly there is no standard network to alert these fishermen
during any kind of tsunami warning. Due to geographical remoteness it
would be impossible to evacuate these families from this risky zone, if
there is another tsunami warning,” Ray added. Andaman and Nicobar
Islands fall under the Zone V of international seismic map and since
2004’s Boxing Day tsunami there have been atleast dozens of tsunami
warning on various occasions, showing that the coastal belts of A & N
Islands are always venerable to tsunami devastation.
