Now, roses will bloom in Himachal for business

SHIMLA: For the first time, roses will be cultivated on a commercial
scale in the foothills of the Shivalik range in Himachal Pradesh
following the successful trial of a hybrid variety by an
enterprising floriculturist.

Unlike other roses, the hybrid variety has been found to be
successful in the temperate climate of Sirmaur valley in the
Moginand region, some 200 km south of Shimla.

"For the last one year or so I have been growing this hybrid rose at
my farm with excellent results," said Baldev Bhandari.

So far the variety has been grown only in Maharashtra and
Karnataka. "Its cultivation here will help meet the huge demand for
roses in North India," Bhandari said.

Inspired by the pioneering experiments by Bhandari, farmers in the
region plan to grow roses on a large scale in the Shivalik
foothills. Bhandari is also growing carnations, another popular
flower.

"I am growing 30,000 plants of carnations on one hectare, with good
results," he said.

Seeing the immense scope for floriculture in the hill state, the
National Horticulture Board has been urging the government to
popularise floriculture and encouraging farmers to take to it to
raise incomes and meet the demand for fresh flowers in major cities
of northern India.

Officials of the horticulture department say they have already spent
Rs 10 million ($226,100) to promote floriculture by growing
gladioli, tulips and carnations among other flowers.

Hybrid rose is the latest flower variety to be grown in the state.
