Himachal govt to bring out directory of freedom fighters
Shimla, July 19: The Himachal Pradesh government would bring out a
directory of freedom fighters of the state next year to mark 150
years of first war of independence.

The directory, to be published by the language, art and culture
department, would include detailed information about the freedom
fighters and also depict history of freedom struggle and sketches of
freedom fighters.

The directory would help in recalling the sacrifices made by freedom
fighters and their contribution to freedom movement, said Prem
Sharma, the director of the department.

He appealed to pension-holder freedom fighters to send their
photographs along with certification and other documents pertaining
to their role in freedom movement so that the same could be
incorporated in the directory.

Asian Bank to assist H.P. in agri-business

The Hindu

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Minister Singhi Ram has said
that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) would assist the State in agri-
business development.

All activities of the horticulture sector had been included in the
priority sector and "specialised category of activities'' in the New
Industrial Policy of the State. For this, a separate package of
incentives was available - including the assistance by ADB - he said
while addressing the 77th Annual General Meeting of the Indian
Council of Agricultural Research Society at New Delhi on Sunday.

Mr Singhi Ram said the state had achieved highest fruit production of
6.96 lakh MT during the year 2005-06, including a record apple
production of 5.40 lakh MT. As many as 2.42 crore apple boxes were
sent outside the state in the last fiscal year as against 2.37 crores
boxes during 2004-05.

He said horticulture was an important sector and was contributing a
lot in improving the economic condition of the farmers.

He said a Rs.-80-crore Horticulture Technology Mission was under
implementation.

The Minister said improved varieties of sub-tropical fruit plants
like Aonla, Ber, Kathal, pomegranate, Karonda and mango had been
introduced in the State with a view to diversify horticulture in sub-
tropical areas.

Besides fruits, the state also produced about 4,700 MT of mushroom,
1,247 MT of honey, 42 MT of hops and floriculture products worth Rs.
8 crores every year, he added.

He said the horticultural industry of the state was presently
contributing about Rs. 1,500 crores per annum to the GDP of the
state.

Himachal was well known as the ``Apple State of India '' and was on
its way to become ``Horticulture State of India''. - UNI.

Himachal post offices to sell tea packets too!

Shimla: Along with stamps and other postal stationery, post offices
across Himachal Pradesh would soon start selling tea leaves to their
customers.

Sources in the postal department say that this scheme would first be
introduced in the district post offices in the 12 districts of the
state and will be introduced at other post offices later.

"The Una post office is to start selling Assam Gold tea in the next
few days and we have already placed an order with a tea company for
the stocks," said Pawan Kumar, the postmaster at Una, some 200 km
from here, was quoted as saying by media reports Thursday.

Considered a quality tea, a 250-gram pack of the Assam Gold will be
sold for Rs.50 which is said to be slightly more expensive than the
open market rate, reports in the local media quoted post department
officials as saying.

The department would charge the tea company a seven percent
commission for selling the product, they said.

The move is part of the innovative schemes the department has been
working on to generate revenues in the face of the rising
competition from private courier services.

Govt. plans permanent habitat for nomads

Staff Correspondent (The Hindu)

Decision taken at the Gujjar Welfare Board's 13th annual meeting

SHIMLA: The Himachal Government plans to give permanent habitat to
about 1,420 identified nomadic families in the State and has extended
the re-identification survey period for such families to August 31
this year.

The decision was taken at the Gujjar Welfare Board's 13th annual
meeting chaired by the Chief Minister.

A majority of these migrant tribes are called `Gujjars' here. The
list of all identified families will be displayed in the Deputy
Commissioners' offices after the survey.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said at the meeting that the
Government had been paying added attention to the educational needs
of the nomadic tribes in Himachal and has made 17 mobile schools
operational to impart education to 365 children of the community who
were later being transferred to regular schools or brought under
Education Guarantee Scheme Centres.

Five trauma centres being started

SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh Government is committed to eradicate
tuberculosis from the state and is actively implementing the Revised
National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP), an official
spokesman said on Sunday.

Under the programme, five trauma centres in the state have been
started in Bilaspur, Hamirpur and Solan with an outlay of Rs. nine
crores.

The state government was also exploring the possibilities of
establishing tele-medicine network with a few top medical
institutions of the country, he said. After the implementation of the
RNTCP in Kangra district of the state, the number of patients has
come down to four per cent from a high of 26 per cent six years back,
he said.

He said the programme envisages a high cure rate of new sputum smear-
positive patients, thereby interrupting the chain of transmission.

The only effective means by which 85 per cent cure rate has been
achieved is the application of the so-called DOTS (Directly Observed
Treatment, Short course Chemotherapy) strategy, he said.

The spokesman said DOTS system of medicine reflects the political and
administrative commitment of both the state and the central
governments since the eradication of the disease depended on good
quality diagnosis apart from good quality drugs.

Mall, Ridge to get lights, plants
Tribune News Service

Shimla, July 9
As part of the beautification campaign, the Tourism Department and
the local Municipal Corporation will undertake illumination of The
Ridge and The Mall, along with planting of more plants so that the
town looks more green and attractive.

The Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation has drawn up an
elaborate plan for this.

Permanent illumination of The Ridge and The Mall will be done by
fixing lighting fixtures, which will make the place look attractive
especially at night.

The Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation has already held a
series of meeting to work out the formalities. Though the money will
be provided by the Tourism Department it is the local MC which will
be entrusted with the task of maintenance and upkeep of the
electrical fixtures. Along with this plants like creepers and
flowers will be planted all along the retaining wall on one side of
The Mall.

"Though the exact amount required for the task is yet to be worked
out funding shall not be a problem," says Mr Tarun Shridhar,
Director, Tourism. He says special care will be taken to ensure that
there is back up inventory so that in case the fixtures go out of
order or there is some fault, it can be fixed and replaced
immediately.

Apart from giving a facelift to The Mall and The Ridge, the Tourism
Department has already given Rs 15 lakh to the MC for converting the
Ladies Park, now renamed as Rani Jhansi Park into an actual
park. "Ironically it is named as a park whereas it has been reduced
to an open space which is used for different purposes, like holding
of exhibitions," says Mr Shridhar.

The Tourism Department is keen that the open space in the heart of
the town is converted into a park with some swings and modern
amusement equipment for children. This will be another attraction
for the locals as well as the tourists who can just hang around and
relax.

The Ridge and The Mall form part of the Heritage Zone of the town,
starting from the Secretariat in Chotta Shimla to the Institute of
Advanced Study. A majority of the century- old- buildings along this
route have been declared as heritage structures, as they were
erected by the British. Infact, the government only allows minor
repair or alteration in these heritage structures along the old
lines.

Himachal boy to lead team to NASA

Express News Service

Shimla, July 10: A Himachali boy is all set to lead a team to the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) base in Florida
to participate in the global finals of the Space Settlement Design
Competition. Hailing from Solan, this 21-year-old boy, Neeraj Kohli,
will leave for Florida tomorrow along with a 15-member team of
students of the Apeejay Institute, Jalandhar.
Neeraj had completed his BTech in electronics and communications
from the JP University of Information and Technology, Waknaghat.
This is probably the first instance that a Himachali youth would
represent the country at such a prestigious event.
Neeraj has got the opportunity to lead the team following stiff
competition. He now believes that his team, one of the three
selected from India, would perform well and bring home the laurels.
The competitions would be held between July 14 and July 17.
According to his peers at Solan, Neeraj deserved this feat as he was
very hard working and always tried to excel. He was also the topper
of his batch in engineering, they say.
Neeraj said a total eight teams from all over the world would
participate in the competition. There would also be teams from
Malaysia, USA and Australia. Those participating in the event would
need to provide a detailed presentation on their perception of
launching a space colony for humans to orbit around Mars.
Earlier, the teams had competed at the national level and then they
had qualified for the Asian competition to reach the final round.

Himachal Pradesh to explore CNG prospects

By IANS
Tuesday July 11, 08:33 AM

Shimla, July 11 (IANS) In an effort to check pollution in the state,
the Himachal Pradesh government is planning to hire the expertise of
Reliance and Essar in setting up a compressed natural gas (CNG)
plant here.

'The transport department will formally contact Reliance and Essar
soon with a proposal after which their experts will visit Shimla for
setting up a CNG mother station,' said Rakesh Sharma, a senior
government official.

'The two companies will submit a feasibility report to the transport
department, and either of them may carry out the work of setting up
the plant,' he said.

With a population of over 175,000, Shimla is a round-the-year
destination for holidaymakers. But the resort town's narrow hill
roads are increasingly getting congested, giving rise to air
pollution which was unheard of a few years ago.

The transport department last year had contacted Indian Oil Corp,
but the oil major said it would not be profitable to set up a plant
in Shimla due to the town's relatively low traffic volume.

Infact, the government only allows minor
repair or alteration in these heritage structures along the old
lines.

Himachal High Court orders Shimla painted red to its colonial past
Posted on 02 July, 2006 # ANI

Shimla: Authorities here are literally painting the town red,
restoring the erstwhile summer capital of the British Raj to its
former colonial glory, what with the Himachal Pradesh High Court
giving orders to paint the rooftops of almost all the city's
buildings a bright red.

Set amidst spectacular hills covered in evergreen trees overlooking
snow-capped mountains, Shimla's prominently British colonial
architecture makes the hill-resort almost picture perfect.

However, in recent times, the picturesque town has been losing its
charm as high-rise buildings cram its nooks and corners, slowly
turning the picturesque hill station into a concrete jungle.

In an effort to put an end to this scarring and return the town to
its past glory, the Himachal Pradesh High Court recently passed an
order that all roofs must be painted red or green.

While red is to brighten up the look of the town, the green colour is
to compensate for the loss in greenery.

Residents who have been worried about the city's depleting green
cover and pleased with the High Court order.

"If the court orders, one must obey. Everyone is of this opinion.
This will help Shimla look more beautiful. Otherwise most people pay
a lot of attention to interiors, but they do not bother about the
roofs. This is a good thing. It should be implemented," Diwar Singh,
a resident.

The High Court order has put pressure on both government and private
owners alike. Willingly or reluctantly, people are painting the town
a bright red or a lively green. Most agree it is giving the town a
better look.

"The High Court has ordered that roofs of all Shimla buildings must
be painted red or green. This is a welcome verdict. This will make
Shimla prettier. Tourists to Shimla, would know from a distance that
they are about to reach this heavenly place", said Sohan Lal, Mayor
of Shimla.

During the days of British rule, all buildings in Shimla had red or
green roofs. Situated at a height of 2,130 metres above sea level,
Shimla is renowned the world over for its beauty and over a million
tourists visit the hill resort every year.

You are running a small business, in Ahmedabad. How
far are u from Dharamsala?. I wish you all the best .
