No more telegrams in Himachal Pradesh
Posted on : 2007-02-21 | Author : Indo Asian News Service
News Category : India

Shimla, Feb 21 The state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has
finally decided to stop telegram services in almost all centres
across Himachal Pradesh, with the coming of newer communication
technologies like emails, mobile phones and fax.

A recent letter from BSNL to the postal department said that telegram
services would soon not be available in the state except in 39 post
offices.

'Telegram services will only be provided in those places where it is
needed and stopped at most other places,' said A.V. Chatturvedi,
deputy general manager of BSNL.

But the postal department, which runs around 2,700 post offices
across the hill state, wants to continue with the services at its
centres.

'BSNL has decided to stop the telegram services at our post offices
even though we would still be happy to jointly provide this service
at our centres,' said Vijay Kumar Nayar, chief postmaster general,
Himachal Pradesh.

Though mobile connectivity has spread rapidly across the state, where
around 90 percent of the hill folk live in the countryside, many
villagers still depend on telegram services.

Greetings,

A citizen journalism effort in Himachal completes one-year
By: Vividhaditya

It’s been an eventful year for HimVani as it celebrates its first
anniversary. It was on February 14th 2006, HimVani started as a blog on
Blogspot. So before I go into flashback, I’d like to thank all the
citizens of Himachal Pradesh for making HimVani a great success. It
initially started as my personal ramblings on Himachal Pradesh – as a
blog. And then Varun, Sanjay, Nityin, Surekha, Neha, Hema, Vikas,
Swadesh, Shekhar and Ms Saroj Thakur came on board. However, I’m happy
to say that today it isn’t any more just our website. It’s the citizens’
property today, who’ve made grassroots journalism a great success. Why
we call it grassroots journalism and why not citizens’ journalism, I’ll
delve into later.

HimVani spells out its vision for Himachal
By: Varun Rattan Singh

Working on a new initiative is like raising one’s children. It brings
its own anxieties, worries and happiness. Today our small baby -
HimVani.com completes one year. What started as a small community for
Himachali's in 2001 has taken shape of an information resource for the
people and by the people of Himachal Pradesh. The story of how we
reached here is long and probably I will talk about it some other time.
For the time being we have one year experience of running an initiative
behind us. So is it time to sit back and celebrate or do we plan ahead
and set some more targets for us in the coming year? I have been
deliberating on these issues for a while. I think it is time to share
some thoughts and probably open the house for people to give us a feedback.

For a long time we have kept one word in our mind i.e. Catalyst.

A turn around the hill
Sanjay V

Trudging through mindspaces that unfurled on Himvani over the past one
year, I can only say the landscape ahead is no less enchanting. Much
having already been said by fellow travellers, I can only say it has
been a spiritual journey for me, a pilgrimage exploring the vast
possibilities and layers of meanings that can be attributed to living in
the mountains, especially Himachal. Himvani, in fact, is an expression
of this feeling for each one of us and that is why we have been
cohabiting here in virtual space as well. That Himvani is growing
exponentially is reason enough for us all to keep moving towards a new
horizon of hope and contented living.

HimVani can be a store house of everything pertaining to Himachal
By: Saroj Thakur

It was by chance and not design that I came to know about HimVani! Why
is it that we take for granted all those things that we get so easily?
Like the fresh air that we breathe, all those qualities that set us,
Himachali's, apart from others, were always taken for granted by me. It
was travelling out of state and interactions with many others that make
us see and appreciate values, attitudes and beliefs that make us different.

I came in contact with HimVani when I posted a write-up “What makes me
proud of being a Himachali” on my personal bog. And after that it is
history.

Snowfall ends Himachal's dry spell

By IANS
Sunday February 11, 04:44 PM
Shimla, Feb 11 (IANS) Having been without a snowfall for most part
this winter, people in Himachal Pradesh were in for a surprise Sunday
as snowfall covered many areas of the state, including this capital,
in a white blanket.

The higher parts of Shimla were covered with six inches of snow while
the lower areas received around two inches.

Normal life was paralysed as vehicles could not move to the higher
parts of the town. There was frequent power failure.

The Hindustan Tibet road beyond Shimla has been blocked by snow since
Saturday as the twin resorts of Kufri and Narkanda had some 20 inches
of snowfall.

Manali and the overlooking 13,050-foot high Rohtang pass have been
having continuous snowfall since Saturday. While there was heavy snow
in the Dhauladhar ranges, Dharamsala saw spells of rain. Dalhousie in
Chamba too received snowfall.

The mid hills had been under a dry spell since early December when
there was light snowfall. This had caused concern among farmers and
in the tourism industry.

Sunday's snowfall is seen as crucial for the state's apple orchards,
which were in dire need of moisture.

The high mountains and valleys of Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur, Bharmaur
and Dodra Kwar received yet another spell of snowfall Sunday, leading
to a further drop in temperatures in the tribal belt.

Himachal passport office yet to open

By IANS
Monday February 12, 02:01 PM
Shimla, Feb 12 (IANS) Though a decision to open a passport office in
Shimla was taken by the external affairs ministry three years ago,
there is still no sign of the promised office here.

More and more travellers, particularly students, headed abroad have
to go to Chandigarh, which is the nearest full-fledged passport
office.

Currently, only passport applications are accepted at Shimla's single-
room office. The rest of the formalities, including follow up, are
carried out at the Chandigarh office, causing inconvenience and
delays to the foreign-bound.

'A passport office would convenience people from all over the state,'
said Rajeev Sharma, a college student who plans to study abroad.

Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma, who hails from
Shimla, had a year ago promised that the new office would open in the
railway board building in downtown Shimla.

However, there is still no sign of the premises being vacated by
previous occupants to make way for Himachal Pradesh's first full-
fledged passport office.

'We are ready to open the new passport office here and have again
requested the state government to vacate the premises in the railway
board building,' said R.S. Verma, the passport liaison officer.

Greetings,

HimVani.com is a Voice of Himachal (VOH) initiative - a sincere effort
to generate public awareness and responsiveness towards sustainable
living in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. The HimVani.com
website is an effort to present and debate the true state of things in
Himachal, and to act as a catalyst to trigger social consciousness.

We are looking for a web designer who is willing to 'PARTNER'
with us and be part of this upcoming social enterprise. The person
should have sound working knowledge of open source content management
systems such as WORDPRESS/DRUPAL/JOOMLA. If working with a start-up
inspires you and giving something back to the society is at the back of
your mind than feel free to drop in a line.

We are also on a constant lookout for WRITERS for whom writing is a
means of expressing emotions. At HimVani we just don't seek people who
can write about social problems but also suggest innovative solutions.
Being a voluntary initiative we don't pay in monetary terms but
definitely provide a platform to publish your stories with your byline
and copyrights. As Google recognises HimVani.com as a news source so
your words will travel far and wide.

Carpe diem !

Hi all,
Well I am writing this mail after long gap, because
I was out of Bangalore for Quite some time.
First of all I would like to tell you that our "Bangalore Chapter" has
started as me and Krishan kumar visited Nimish's family at Cambridge road
in Banlaore on 14th jan,2007.
Although we were only 2 to visit Nimish's family but it was really a good
start where in we could interact with each other at first meeting. One of
the amazing thing I realized is that Nimish has very good interaction with
Himachal inspite of being born and brought up in Orissa.Bohra family is
very hospitable as Himachalis are known to be but they are free and open
minded to talk to.
I would write about Bohra family as:
Nimish's father is Ex-SAIL Chief Chemist staying with him in Bangalore. He
is very good fellow whom you can talk lot about Cricket and other issues
related to Himachal.Bohra family hail from Nalagarh in Himachal.Nimish's
mother is a house wife staying with him.
Nimish is presently working in Regalics as Marketing professional.Nimish
is a graduate from REC(NIT) Rourkela, orissa. After that he has done Master
in Design through CEED in Mumbai. One more interesting thing about this
fellow is that he has an Element of art in him.He has interest in
painiting and have painted some Beautiful Painitings which you can see on
the walls in his Home in Bangalore.
Nimish's wife Aabha is a Teacher in Engineering College in
Bangalore.Nimish has two Children studying in Bangalore.

Well I had invited other guys on the same day but they could not meet due
to some personal reasons.Anyways Nimish has asked us to plan again
sometime where in we can come together at his home so we can have lunch
together.
I leave this on other Team members who are interested in carrying Forward
this Bangalore Chapter and make it a success. Please bring more people in
contact and help them out here if in need. This is all I can say at this
moment.I assure to add 2-3 more interested members by the end of May,2007
in Bangalore Chapter.
I responded to Apna Himachal but so far I have not got any Feedback from
them as person concerned is in Delhi.Anyways I would like to express that
I am open to such issues and will try to make things possible.

Further to this I would like to inform all of you that I will be out of
India after 5th Feb,2007 till May 4th,2007.During this time, this will be
my contact email.More over I will try to move things in Norway as well if
possible from Himvani perspective.Do write me on this mail please.
Please feel free to get back to me for any mistake or correction, because I
believe there is a chance of improvement everytime.

Hi,

I am sure many of us are waiting for an update with regards to Vasudha.
I received a mail from Mr Vikram Rawat, (Vasudhas father)and sharing
some of the excerpts
----------------------------------------------
It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to convey to you that we
had been able to implant cochlear to Vasudha., My entire family is
greatly thankful for your help and moral support.

The date of surgery and depositing of money was fixed by Dr. R.C. Deka
on 11th of December. I went to Delhi along with my family Rajni ,my wife
,Vasudha and her 3 years old younger sister Cheshta. The final date of
operation was fixed on 14th and Vasudha was admitted to Hospital on
13th. Since implants are very sensitive to infection so Vasudha was kept
in isolation room. Even Parent are not allowed to enter the rooms
without masks on the face. On 14th she was taken to operation theatre at
8.20 A.M and brought back at 2.20 P.M.. She remained unconscious for 5
hour after 2.20 P.M. She recovered nicely. Dr. R.C. Deka performed the
surgery and Dr. Shyam and Dr. Mohnish assisted him. Dr. Mohnish a
very young and energetic doctor took every care of Vasudha. The
hospital staff was very caring and helpful.

Now she is fully recovered. Her implant and external equipments shall
start working on 12th of January, and this will be followed by regular
trips to Delhi for therapy and mapping etc. in the next 1~2 years. The
sound of this world would break her silence on 12th, and we hope she
would start hearing us. The identification of voices and reaction would
take couple of months like a new born baby, may be years, but we are
quite confident, if her implant work properly ,we’d put our all out
efforts for rehabilitation of Vasudha.

----------------------------------------------

We will soon be putting up names of the contributors who helped in this
initiative. The family still requires support and those of you who are
interested in contributing can check out details here

Thats right, I agree.

I ahve telling that the songs , acouple of them froem the film 'Vivah' of Rajshri Productions, give the feeling as if one is in the hills, and what if Himachal as the songs are quite melodious... and the backgorud so soothing ..

Would love to know where we can get to listen or download the Himachali songs on the net.. Its high an initiative is taken to make available Himachali songs while one is at the desk , be it browsing and lsitening to Himachali songs .

Shimla news vendor calls it a day after 58 years

By Baldev S. Chauhan, Shimla, Dec 31: Come rain, snow, or sunshine, you
always found this news vendor selling newspapers and magazines in
downtown Shimla. Now, Bishan Dass Sharma has decided to call it a day -
after 58 years.

Sharma (79), popularly known as Pandit-ji, was a permanent feature on
the bustling Mall. He has decided to hang his boots and return to his
native village in the Himalayan foothills.

"Though Pandit-ji was curt in his manner, he was an ace news vendor and
always delivered what you asked him," said Ramesh Sharma, one of his
many customers.

Pandit-ji's another client said: "He was indeed one of the most
conspicuous figures at the edge of the Gaiety theatre building of the
British Raj era. We will miss him."

There were stories about him being a Criminal Investigation Department
(CID) agent. The stories got credence because no other newsvendor could
start a shop in the vicinity of Pandit-ji in all these years.

"I received a lot of love and affection from the people which I will
always treasure," Sharma told IANS a few days before leaving for his
Mehatpur village in Una district, some 220 km from here.

"It will be difficult to adjust to a new life as I know the art of
selling newspapers and magazines for the last 60 years," he said.
