Nathpa Jhakri exceeds generation target

SHIMLA: The prestigious 1500-MW Nathpa Jhakri power project has
generated a record 2267 million units of electricity in the first
quarter of April-June which is 42 million units more than the target
set by the Union Ministry of Power, claimed a Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam
spokesman here on Tuesday.

The power station, which began commercial generation in October 2003,
has so far produced about 18,525 million units of electricity which is
being supplied to northern states like Delhi, Rajasthan, U.P., Punjab,
Haryana, J&K, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh.

During the last financial year 2006-07 the power station had generated
a record 5941 million units of electricity, said the spokesman.

Patent for chapatti roller

Shimla, July 5
The Patent Office, Kolkata, has registered an innovative design
of `chapatti roller' developed by Subhash Jishtu of Matiana village in
Shimla district.

The design registration is valid for 10 years that could be renewed for
another five years. The application for registration was sent through
the Himachal Pradesh Patent Information Centre under the State Council
for Science, Technology and Environment.

Principal scientific officer of the council S.S. Chandel said the
council had earlier got registered Kullu shawl and Kangra tea under the
Geographical Indications Act. The case for registration of Chamba rumal
has also been forwarded.

Rohtang tunnel issue to be taken up with PM

Shimla, July 5
The Himachal government will take up the issue for expeditious
construction of the Rs 1,355-crore Rohtang tunnel with Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh to provide an all-weather link to the landlocked
Lahaul valley at the earliest.

This was sated by Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh while addressing a
public meeting at Sissu in Lahaul subdivision on the first day of his
two-day visit to the valley today. He said Indira Gandhi, on her
visit to the Lahaul valley, had acceded to the request of local
people to construct a motorable tunnel below the Rohtang Pass. He
said tribal development was a priority with the government and added
attention was being paid to it.

He said his government had carved out a separate tribal sub-plan by
earmarking funds for the development of tribal areas.

He said it had ensured speedy and focused development of these areas
to bring them on a par with the rest of the state. He said despite
limited working season, rapid strides had been made in the
development in these areas.

Helipad services for Manimahesh

Chamba, July 5
The air service to the Manimahesh temple is expected to begin before
the Janmashtami celebration here as the construction work for the
helipad near the temple is going on at a fast pace.

Set in the snow-clad Bharmour valley, Manimahesh is situated at about
216 km away from the nearest Pathankot railway station.

Lakhs of devotees throng the place during the Manimahesh pilgrimage
starting from September 4 on the eve of Janamasthmi and will conclude
on September 19.

Bharmour Congress MLA Thakur Singh said Chief Minister Virbhadra
Singh would inaugurate the helipad before start of the celebration.

Kailash mount situated at an altitude of about 5,656 metres is
clearly visible to the devotees from the Manimahesh lake. — PTI

Rita would no more need a kidney donor

Shimla: Rita, a resident of Krishna Nagar, Shimla, who had been
suffering from kidney failure and was under treatment in Post Graduate
Institute (PGI), Chandigarh, succumbed to her ailment yesterday.

The Chairman of Himachal Chapter of Society for Disability and
Rehabilitation Studies (SDRS), Ajai srivastava who had earlier
appealed for an O+ve (O positive) kidney donor for the 25-year old
poor woman, informed that as no donor could not be found on time, all
prayers to save her life went futile.

HimVani through its website had also appealed for a kidney donor and
monetary help. While many had come forward to provide monetary help,
no kidney donor could be found. HimVani had received a couple of
emails - of which HimVani still has copies, and shared with Srivastava
- to volunteer to be a kidney donor, but only for some monetary price.
HimVani had taken a stand not to encourage organ selling, hence the
requests were not forwarded to Rita's family.

HimVani mourns the death of Rita and regrets, it could not do enough
to save her life and reach out to people who could have been possible
kidney donors.

Srivastava informed that while Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh,
Virbhadra Singh had assured to meet the total expenses - of about Rs 2
lakh - of the transplant from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, it's
the wait for a donor that took the toll on Rita.

Dear Apna Himachalis,

I hope that premonsoon showers have reduced temperatures all across
India. In this past few months we have been keeping busy with a
mission to promote Himachal, its people and culture.

I am pleased to inform you that your favourite site HimVani.com has
got a facelift. We've redesigned the site and it's more a website now
than a blog. But right now I'll still say that it's  BETA and not a
final version. So expect some more changes here and there.

We've been the leaders in Himachal web space for over a year now. And
we're far far ahead from our nearest competitor, whom we've taught a
few lessons on online space. And here we too have taken the lead to
give you more. And to be honest the new design had been keeping us low
for the moment on content.

So what should you look forward to:

-- The logo colours have been inversed to give a corporate look.

-- The basic colours of the site though have been retained. In fact
our survey showed that people in offices asked from a far of place if
they had opened HimVani.com just by seeing the colours. We did
experiment with some new colours, but then on popular feedback we
reverted to the old ones.

-- The blog look is out and the News website look is in.

-- We have more content on the home page and some categories have been
brought on it?

-- The Poll breaks free from the Sidebar and comes in the main content area

-- Similarly, "News from Other Sources" has come in the main content
area. (But it might go back into the Sidebar. :) )

-- The Search Result page is no longer a long long page ... Results
come as excerpts.

-- The long list of Categories has been moved from the Home Page to
the inside pages.

-- Many advertisers have been approaching us and asking for the option
to advertise on HimVani but we had refrained from advertising till now
to concentrate on the content. But now we have large rooms of space
available for advertisements, so happy news for advertisers as well
(and for us too as we may eventually be able to recover domain name
and server space costs, and may be if we earn profits we may pay some
of our
writers or put up an award for the Best Writer of the Year" or so).

-- We've added the "Print" option of the article and also added the
"Mail the story" option too.

-- What has affected negatively, however is the RSS Feeds. We've let
our blog live in the directory but shifted the domain name to the
root, that means affect to the RSS Feeds. Those of you, who've
subscribed to our earlier RSS Feed http://himvani.com/news/feed may
please change it to http://himvani.com/feed or bettr still use the
Feedburner feed, which in
future would remain same irrespective of the changes we make. So the
Feedburner Feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/himvani/news

-- The Comments Feed too has got affected. The old one

State to extend forest cover

Shimla, June 13
The Himachal government will develop more forests on the lines of the
Shimla catchment area to preserve the ecology and protect water
sources.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh stated this, while discussing his
government's plans with Delhi Chief Minister Sheela Dixit, when they
visited the Shimla Water Supply Catchment Area today.

The Chief Minister informed that the Shimla Water Supply Catchment
Area had been declared as a protected area way back in 1952 and in
1982 a wildlife sanctuary was set up. He said that it was considered
the best maintained forest in Asia.

The CM said his government was implementing a number of CAT plans
with internal and external financial assistance with a view to create
natural environment for increasing the green cover and preservation
of the natural water resources in different parts of the state. He
said efforts were being made to implement such plans in water
scarcity areas.

He said with the increase in population, water had been the most
pressing demand for which a number of new augmentation schemes were
being executed. The Giri Water Supply Augmentation scheme would
further improve the water supply to Shimla.

He said his government had banned green felling way back in 1980's
and recycled polythene bags during the beginning of the present
tenure. He has directed the authorities concerned to make a detailed
plan to restore the forest rest house at Seog so that people visiting
the catchment area had a comfortable stay.

Both the CM and Sheela Dixit planted saplings of cedar near the rest
house premises.
