Patna, Aug 8 (PTI) The first-ever international
seminar in Bihar seeking to redefine poverty and find
ways for its eradication touched off an acrimonious
debate between arch political rivals with the
opposition RJD questioning the wisdom of organising
such a costly congregation and the ruling NDA
defending it as a part of its initiative to tackle the
biggest challenge facing the state.
The three-day international seminar on +revisiting the
poverty issue: management, identification and
eradication, which concluded here in July last week,
not not only saw luminaries in the field of economics
discussing ways to identify incidence of poverty, but
also got the rival political sides to trade charges
over efficacy of such events in tackling the malaise.
A galaxy of eminent economists from across the world
including Dr Arjun Sengupta, Chairman of National
Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector,
Dr Abhijit Sen, member, Planning Commission, Richard
Palmer Jones of East Angila University, Amresh Dubey
of National Council of Applied Economic Research,
Peter Lanjow (World Bank), Kaushik Basu of Cornell
University, JNU Vice-Chancellor B B Bhattacharya and
UGC Chairman S K Thorat participated in the
deliberations.
The global meet of scholars organised by Institute of
Human Development, Delhi, A N Sinha Institute of
Social Studies, and Asian Development Research
Institute and supported by Bihar State Planning Board
drew criticism from Union Rural Development Minister,
Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, who chided the state's Nitish
Kumar government for thrusting huge and unnecessary
expenditure on the poor state. PTI
