Rahmani-30: A school of hope

		 By Kashif-ul-Huda

Feature ArticleThe Muslims of North India for historical reasons have not had
very
friendly relations with the local police. I was in Patna visiting
Rahmani-30 when Abhayanand, Additional Director General of Police makes
a visit in his official car. Rahmani-30 is set up on the pattern of
Bihar Super-30 which is a successful experiment to pick and train 30
students from poor economic background and prepare them for entrance
exam of famous Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Abhyanand
waits while group of twenty odd Muslim students finish their afternoon
prayers (Asr). These students have recently appeared for the class
tenth exams and selected to Rahmani-30 after an entrance test and an
interview. Entrance test was held in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal
– clearly a sign of increasing popularity of the institution that is
barely a year old.

A year ago, Maulana Wali Rahmani, Sajjada
Nasheen of Khanqah Rahmaniya, Munger and Secretary of All India Muslim
Personal Law Board requested Abhayanand to help him set up Rahmani-30.
Abhayanand was associated with Super-30 and readily agreed to the idea.
The dearth of good quality students led them to start another batch of
students who had just finished their tenth. So that they can be given
quality education for two years and that way more students can be ready
for the tough entrance exams of IITs (IIT-JEE).

I was visiting
the institution just three days before the results of IIT-JEE were to
be announced. No one could have imagined that all ten students would
have qualified for India's premier engineering institutions. At that
time there were about twenty-five students who had arrived there from
different districts of Bihar. A few students were from adjoining states
of Jharkhand and West Bengal. These are the two years batch of
Rahmani-30 that is preparing for IIT-JEE of 2011.

Abhayanand,
who goes by only one name, arrived unannounced and a class was
organized just after the Asr prayer. He went over some Physics problems
for about 45 minutes. Students came out to see him off and he offered
some words to inspire his young and eager students. Talks again turned
to Physics and he continued the instructions on the back of his
official car. This was a rare and a welcome sight to see police
officers contributing towards the future of young Muslim students.

ADGP
Abhayanand told me that he enjoys teaching and is now associated with
five such experiments. Most of the students of these five institutions
qualified for IIT. For economically and educationally backward state of
Bihar this is very good news. And more than news, it is a hope that now
even poor but meritorious students can achieve success with a bit of
help. In Bihar, Rahmani-30 has given a new direction to Muslim students
anxiously waiting for announcements of entrance exams and results.

Successful
students of this year's exam have already indicated that they will
teach their juniors and once finished with their education will work
for the benefit of the community. It costs Rs. 80,000 per year for each
student's expenses. Students are given free board, lodge and
instructions. All expenses are met by Rahmani Foundation.

Rahmani-30
is a beacon of hope for Bihari Muslims not only because of the help it
provides to meritorious students but also because a new generation of
Muslims is taking up interest in the community affairs. Though
Abhayanand and Wali Rahmani are the public face of Rahmani-30,
volunteer team behind this institution consists of young Muslims in
their 30s. These have jobs but volunteer their time to make sure that
wheel of this coaching keeps turning. They make decisions for the day
to day running to organizing exams.

With the successful result
of this year's IIT-JEE, Rahmani-30 and people associated with it have
proved that they mean business and that with focused and sustained
effort nothing is impossible.

Hi!

As the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar has built long-delayed bridges,
re-laid roads that had ceased to exist, ensured that teachers and doctors work
in their respective centres, and kept crime under control. As a result, his
development agenda made waves in the just concluded Lok Sabha polls.

Now, the great Bihar change-maker is paying tribute to his guide and `Total
Revolution' leader Jayaprakash Narayan, popularly called JP.

Nitish Kumar can thus take full credit for announcing to honour activists who
participated in JP movement of 1974 considered the biggest anti-Congress
political movement in the country. [Beginning in Bihar, the JP movement spread
all over India and resulted in the first non-Congress coalition taking office in
New Delhi in 1977.]

The http://neerajbhushan.wordpress.com/ has the detailed story.

Thanks and regards.

One must admit that the report/book titled "Special Category Status: A
Case for Bihar" makes a compelling case for special category status to
Bihar.

There is statistical evidence to show that Bihar did not become
backward, it was made backward. There has been a deliberate effort that
in terms of economic and social indicators of development, Bihar remains
below all-India averages in most respects of human development.

Raekha Prasad reporting in May 2006 for
<http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguardian> The Guardian from Khagaul, her
father's home town wrote, "The state of Bihar contradicts modern India's
optimistic vision of itself. "Bihar" has become an expletive, a butt of
derogatory jokes made by people in certain metropolitan circles who have
never visited the place. Underlying the ridicule is a potent fear in the
minds of many Indians that Bihar is a template of what this ascendant
economic power could yet become. For India's burgeoning middle classes,
Bihar is a byword for everything they most fear: feudal and caste
cruelty, criminalised politics and grinding poverty." Backwardness of
the state is at the root of the crisis that has been underlined.

While special category status to Bihar merits attention, does anyone
know about the fate of the Bihar's Common School System Commission that
had submitted its 313-page report in June 2007 calling "for a
legislation underpinning the Common School System." If this is done
Bihar can show the right path especially with regard to education to the
whole country. Has Bihar Government acted on its recommendation?

Kala Pani tales: For whom water is no synonym for life

April 7, 2009. Sitamarhi, Bihar

Septuagenarian Hasima Bibi continues to weep all the time. She has lost all her
family members, mostly due to incurable diseases for drinking chemically
polluted water in the village , derisively named Kaala Pani although land
acquisition records of Runnisaidpur block of Sitamarhi sadar region in Bihar has
its name as Raksia.

Her man of faith is Ramsevak Singh, secretary, Runnisaidpur local committee of
the Communist Party of India, the small party unit that fights for the
pollution-affected 800 households of the village. Ramsevak Singhs plight is the
same.

As I walk along the path in front of her thatched house with Ramsevakji, she
informs, Kal dow litre mittika tel mila ( yesterday, got two litres of
Kerosene oil). Ramsevakji responds but has a grin against the administration.
See how cruel and irresponsible is the present government. Not a single family
got the promised 35 kgs of wheat at Rs 2 per kg under Antyoday Yojana. She got
just two litres of Kerosene and feel happy. They have lost the power to say they
should get 35 kgs of wheat at concessional rates. No political party is around.
What we can do alone?, he said with grit of communist of yesteryears with moral
values that have forsaken five-star communists of today.

That is the state of Kalapani village. Perceptually very different from Kaala
Pani of colonial era when armed freedom-fighters who were deported to the
Cellular Jail of Port Blair were ostracized for crossing Kaala Pani or sea, this
new Kaala Pani is amidst a watery strip in a 75 square kilometer area, submerged
due to the embankments on the Bagmati. The result is blockage of entry of the
Manusmara, a Bagmati tributary, into the village. And instead the entire water
body (Manusmara segment) comprises unprocessed effluents, released by a sugar
mill, belonging to the Dhanuka group of Kolkata.

Some 150 people mostly children, oldies and women died of Kala Pani ailment
and another 350 have been suffering from debilitating syndrome such as nausea,
loss of weight and appetite, fever and urinary troubles. Ramsevakji informs,
The President of India bestowed the award of Nirmal Gram to the Mukhia, Archana
Singh, last year and the sugar mill-owners managed to get a clean chit from a
testing laboratory in Hyderabad . But you just dip any finger into the water,
you will feel the irritation and it will be blackened. Poverty was unknown here
a decade ago. Now its a regime of grim poverty.

Indeed, the water here is black and stinking. No agricultural practice is
possible although it was a fertile area producing three to four crops ands
vegetables every year like wheat, Khesari, Arhar and Mesta .For the past ten
years ,self-reliant farmers of Kaala Pani have to work as bonded labour in
Punjab and Haryana to keep an wolf from the door of their households.

This apart, silted up river-beds and transport of silts due to reaction against
embankments causes mounds of silts At Raksia and adjacent Ibrahimpur of
Runnisaidpur block , a 27 feet high mosque in Raksia remains buried under with
about five-foot upper portion of two minars visible while a temple of Lord Shiva
is said to be dug out every year from the sand to help people offer puja.

There is hardly any reach of the embankment that has not faced the wrath of the
river and the breaches. Queerly enough, the Government and masses in general
consider such structures as hedge floods, even though every major flood has
blasted this myth. Silt-load of rivers devastates catchment areas by rising bed
level of the rivers.

A press communiqu issued by Barh Mukti Abhiyan Freedom from Floods Campaign
whose convenor is Dr Mishra, warned , The setting is seemingly perfect for
another breach! The state has just woken up, collecting stones for the
protection work in case the river decides to gnaw the embankment. Should that
happen, what course the river would adopt before it joins that Ganga is not
known just as it was not known the course last year following the breach at
Kusaha?

A few local Nepali inhabitants took members of the visiting team this
correspondent having been included around and showed the position of
increasing proximity of the rivers, boulders and wire-nets. Had it not
breached at Kusaha, it would have taken place here at Prakashpur, the oldest of
them told the team.

The main reason for loss of farmland in other districts of north Bihar like
Sitamarhi is embankment-accelerated floods, the deluge-like situation last year
following the breach along 1770 metres of eastern embankment of Kosi at Kusaha
in Nepal on 18 August last year. The course of the mighty Himalayan river
remained changed for nearly five months. But the civil engineers racket which
is necessarily hyphenated from numerous competent, talented and
dedicated-to-rule book other civil engineers will never give up the highly
detrimental policy of embankment-construction. A 15-member team of social
activists, technologists, ex-bureaucrats journalists , after visiting five
districts of flood-ravaged areas of Bihar and eastern Nepal including the Kusava
dyke-burst spot in the last week of March , expressed apprehension about another
breach at Prakashpur on the eastern bank in village Rajabaas in Sunsari district
of Nepal, 14 km upstream of Kusaha. Kosi is close to the embankment site and
with the spurs and the possibility of another breach anytime, following a heavy
shower cannot be ruled out. The team leader and one of the handful of most
knowledgeable flood management experts, Dinesh Kumar Mishra fears, if it
happens, large portions of Purnea, Katihar and Darbhanga may go under water.

Engineers and interested politicians have no interest in understanding the
secular hydro-dynamics of rivers but even political parties that vouch for
democracy for social uplift, particularly the communists, including Naxalites
and Maoists, too seem apathetic towards flood-afflicted thousands. Some 3.3
million people remain are still to recover from deluge-shocks in a state that
gave to the nation stalwarts like Swami Sahajanand, Jayaprakash Narayan,
Rajendra Prasad, Babu Jagajivan Ram and Karyanand Sharma.

Dear Friends,

*** Will take few minutes of your time. Mail content is doing a promo for a new
venture.

Please allow me to introduce a new venture in education sector: “Praxis
Educationals Pvt Ltd”.

Praxis is a team of highly qualified, experienced & energetic get goers. In the
first phase of operation, Praxis is going to start imparting IIT JEE coaching at
Patna ( Bihar ) from May -09.

What motivated us to venture into coaching for IIT JEE:
·         Though, number of players are already well established in the
market, we believe a mix of getting all three subjects (PCM) of excellent
quality together at one place is somehow felt missing with most of the experts.
·         Sky rocketing price of this expert service is seen marking a
divide between the classes over the time.
·         Sending wards to Delhi / Kota hasn’t been a workable
solution to all

How we are intended to address these concerns:
·         Qualitative education: All of faculties from IIT. Avg
experience of faculty: 3 seasons plus (considering full time & part time
together)
·         Advising faculties are well established name in Delhi & Kota
having accomplishments in Maths Olympiad, have authored journals, have
publication on Mc Graw Hills. They are not less than a brand himself of national
standards.
·         We are ready to offset cost pressure. We have decided to
charge 15000+ tax only for this year.
·         The solution to address the need of having a solution at door
step which let not guardians think of sending their wards away is in Pipeline.
By the way, operating from Patna can address this concern to many of students
staying in nearby suburbs.

Our strength:
·         The Team
·         Power of Content, which is designed by experts/ worked as HOD
in reputed institutes of national fame in the sector

Highlights on modus operandi:
·         Individual care will be on main focus. At any point of time
we can show the growth curve to students/ parents based on the differential
performance ( Curr Performance – at the time they joined us), where do they
stand in race i.e. comparative deviations……
·         Students will be interacting to visiting faculties of
national repute.
·         Lecture theatres are equipped with Audio Visual effect
(Projector/ Speakers)

Bundle of goodies on free:
·         Personality development expert/Corporate trainer will be
visiting from Bangalore .
·         Lectures on motivation/ thought building

** Please check design of poster in attachment. You can see the same (kiosk) on
alternate iron pillars on platform of Patna junction, Huge hoardings on Gandhi
Maidan- Kargill Chowk, Raja Bajar, vehicles loaded with the same ads taking
rounds in the city (Patna), daily newspapers covering them on weekly basis.

A win -win for both of us (You and me):
·         By reading up to this line, your dilemma for candidates in
your family/friends staying in Bihar would have been ended that I am well sure
of. Get them to me I will give them waivers on Price of service as much it’s
in my hand.  (not much but surely a little bit !!)
·         If you are referring any candidate, please ask him to contact
on numbers given in my signature below and to take my name while visiting
institute.

Please have this mail reached to the knowledge of people of Bihar in your
contact list. Thanks for extending support in ad-campaign.

Warm Regards

Read the following to know the reasons to throw away PRESENT Govt.

Lets have a look at where the TAX we pay is MISUSED by PRESENT GOVT.
Do you know what 1Crore looks like? I mean just how many zeroes it has?
1,00,00,000
1) Rs 87153.12 crores is missing as reported in chapter-2 of Comptroller &
Auditor Generals report, an official government agency (http://www.cag.gov.in/).
And this is just for the years 2007-09! Over the years, how much of our money
has been stolen from us?
This is OUR money folks. What we paid this government as tax! Where have they
put it? There is simply no answer forthcoming!

2) Aid of Rs 3000 crores to Afghanistan for economic reconstruction. This
includes 150 bullet-proof watch towers, 2,500 protective vests, and a lot of
mine clearing equipment. Bullet proof watch towers and protective vests are
economic reconstruction?

3) The absolutely pathetic state of the educational infrastructure of all
government run institutions hits one right in the face. Now while education
systems are in doldrums, our government gives out money to Harvard and Cambridge
universities! How much money? To the tune of Rs 50 crores!

Now have a look at how PRESENT GOVT is promoting TERRORIST activities in INDIA.

  1) Remember the Mumbai train blasts? Well, around that time India gave
financial aid to Pakistan for earthquake relief Rs 150 crores of it! (Aid to
the ones responsible for blast!!!)

2) While Pakistan and some other islamic nations are closing down their
madressas, there is talk of granting CBSE status to Islamic madressas in India
(about half a million in number). Madressas are breeding ground for radical
fundamentalist Islam, one that produces terror
This will ensure that we don't just have corrupt thugs ruling us, we will have
well trained jihadi terrorists in the parliament AND the bureaucracy!
ent/404478/ and
http://www.sanghparivar.org/join-madrasa-why-sit-for-tough-cbse-board-exam)

3) PRESENT GOVT has decided to give pension and jobs to the families of all
"Kashmiri Terrorists" who were killed. No help for the Indian soldiers and
citizens who have been killed by the terrorists. They say they are being
"humane"!! Not for the families of the army people who were killed not for the
families of the kashmiris who were massacred
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK6xwFRQ7BQ)

This has to stop, before INDIA becomes the new SAUDI of the planet.
And any government that takes decisions like these needs to be kicked out of
power. I don't think even resilient India will ever be able to recover if the
present government comes back to power this year.

THE VERY THOUGHT OF PRESENT GOVT COMING BACK TO POWER IS SCARY....
This year, every responsible citizen of this country needs to get out there and
vote. And vote for change.

Victory Margins Narrowing, So Every Vote Makes a Difference..

At this crucial time, it's the responsibility of we people, to make our fellow
citizen aware of what is happening in India under the rule of PRESENT GOVT.....

This is a sincere request to take few minutes of busy schedule to go out and
VOTE and VOTE FOR CHANGE.

This email is written by an INDIAN CITIZEN who is really very much worried as to
what would happen to our INDIA if the PRESENT GOVT. comes back to power...

The damage Macaulay did to IndiaBy Francois Gautier

A country needs people who are proud of their own culture and
civilization in order to move forward. That is what true nationalism -
as opposed to jingoism - is all about. It also requires an
intelligentsia which reflects this pride in its newspapers, books,
paintings, sculptures and sports.

But
for such overall excellence to be achieved, a country needs
intellectuals in contact with their society, who know their roots, who
have been groomed in the intricacies, the subtleties and genius of
their own culture, while not being blind to its faults. For
intellectuals are the ones who shape the psyche of a nation.

In
India, we generally find there exists a brilliant intelligentsia, which
is at par with most of the Western intelligentsia. Indian intellectuals
are fluent in English, write it even better, are cognizant of Western
literature; indeed, they can often quote Camus, Sartre, Freud, and
Jung; they know the latest trends in the West, have read the latest
books, and can converse on any subject on this earth, be it ecology or
fashion.

Unfortunately, not only are they totally ignorant of
their own culture, but they also look down upon it. Not only have they
no idea about the greatness of the Bhagavad Gita, of meditation, of
Ayurveda, or pranayama, but they use the best of their talents to run
it down, with wit, good English and a nasty and acerbic pen.

These
intellectuals are all a product of a man called Macaulay, who, more
than 200 years ago, had the brilliant idea to fashion sahibs out of
brown-skin natives and make them not only more British than the
British, but also make them ashamed of their own culture, spirituality
and ethos. When they took over India, the British set upon establishing
an intermediary race of Indians, whom they could entrust with their
work at the middle level echelons and who could one day be convenient
instruments to rule by proxy, or semi-proxy. The tool to shape these
British clones was education.

In the words of Macaulay, the
pope of British schooling in India: "We must at present do our best to
form a class, who may be interpreters between us and the millions we
govern, a class of persons Indians in blood and color, but English in
taste, in opinions, in morals and in intellects." Macaulay had very
little regard for Hindu culture and education: He stated "All the
historical information which can be collected from all the books which
have been written in the Sanskrit language, is less valuable than what
may be found in the most paltry abridgement used at preparatory schools
in England."
He further said : "Hindus have a literature of small
intrinsic value, hardly reconcilable with morality and full of
monstrous superstitions."

It seems today that India's Marxist
intelligentsia could not agree more with Macaulay, for his dream has
come true: Today, the greatest opponents of Indianised and
spiritualized education are the descendants of these brown sahibs; the
"secular" politicians, the journalists, the top bureaucrats, the whole
westernized cream of India. And what is even more paradoxical, most of
them are Hindus!

It is they who, on getting independence,
have denied India its true identity and borrowed blindly from the
British education system, without trying to adapt it to the unique
Indian mentality and psychology; and it is they who are refusing to
accept a change of India's education system, which is totally
West-oriented and is churning out machines, learning by rote boring
statistics which are of little use in life.

And what India is
getting from this education is a youth which apes the West: They go to
McDonald's, thrive on MTV culture, wear the latest Klein jeans and
Lacoste T-Shirts, and in general are useless, rich parasites, in a
country which has so many talented youngsters who live in poverty .
They will grow up like millions of other Western clones in the
developing world, who wear a tie, read The New York Times and perhaps
swear by liberalism and secularism to save their countries from doom.
In time, the same youth will reach elevated positions and write books
and articles which make fun of India; they will preside over
human-right committees; be "secular" high bureaucrats who take the
wrong decisions and generally do tremendous harm to India, because it
has been programmed in their genes to always run their own country
down. In a gist, they will be the ones always looking to the West for
approval and forever perceive India through the Western prism.

Dr.
Murli Manohar Joshi is absolutely right. Indian children should be told
about the immense human and spiritual values of their own literature,
like we in Europe are brought up on the values of the Iliad and the
Odyssey, or the great Greek tragedies. Therefore, education in India
has to be more Indianised - it is not a question of being
"nationalistic", or "saffron-oriented", as Indian Marxists are fond of
saying, but of knowing one's own culture, the Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita,
the Ramayana, which in fact, according to many Western scholars, stand
among the greatest literary
works of all times.

At the same
time, it is true, as Sri Aurobindo pointed out: "Though we must save
for India all that she has stored up of knowledge, character and noble
thoughts in her immemorial past, we must also acquire for her the best
knowledge that Europe can give her and assimilate it to her own
peculiar type of national temperament.

Unfortunately, at a
time when the West, sick with antibiotics and a blind medicine which
kills more than it cures, is rediscovering the virtues of Ayurveda,
every third shop in India sells allopathic prescriptions. When the
West, sick with materialism is rediscovering the virtues of Swadeshi,
Coca Cola, McDonald, or Ford are given a free hand in India. When the
West, amidst violence, depression and stress is rediscovering the
virtues of spirituality and pranayama, it is not even taught in Indian
schools and
universities. When the West, in mortal combat with a
religion which says: "Unless you believe in my God, I will kill you,"
is rediscovering the virtues of the Indian dharma - the only living
spirituality left in the world - it is made fun of by India's own
intelligentsia. If only they knew on what treasure they are perpetually
spitting on!

Impression of Bihar : 2009I spent six weeks in Bihar earlier this year. I had
the opportunity to travel by road to
Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga Vaishali and surrounding areas of Patna. Since my
last visit a
year ago, I must admit I saw some changes for the better, like absence of
refuse on the
roads, construction of sewage system in Kankarbagh and road building in many
parts of
the districts I visited. I must admit that some of he road surfaces on dual
carriageway
that is being built are of European standard. Patna looked cleaner and
somewhat better
than my last visit a year ago.
Nevertheless, there is absolutely no change in the lives if ordinary
Bihari. I was stunned
to see the number of shops everywhere. People just spread a mat on
pavement, put a few
items and sat waiting for customer. It seems as if there is one shop for
each Bihari. It took
three weeks for me to understand the reason for such proliferation. As
there are no job, no
other opportunity to earn a living, people have no option other than to
sell something which is
better than the alternative - begging. Whilst a school kid and growing up
in 50s, I never saw
poors making footpath and pavements their home, where they cooked and
slept as is the case
now. People looked stunted and thin. Children looked smaller for their
age, malnourished and
ill. There being no Highway Code for vehicle drivers, there were
unnecessary traffic jams on
       the roads. As a British national, I was refused a Sim card for my mobile;
in England, one buys
a mobile phone with Sim card like Cadbury chocolate, no matter who they
are. Reason for such
restriction was to prevent crime and terrorism. And yet, criminals go
unpunished, terrorists are
never apprehended, let alone prosecute and punish them. So, who is made to
suffer ? A common
law abiding citizen. Similar hardship I encountered when I went to buy a
new Maruti Omni car in
       Patna.
Visiting Darbhanga to attend Foundation day and Alumni meet at the Medical
college was a nostalgic
journey. It was there that I became a doctor, spent 7 golden years and met
my wife. I suffered
emotional shock on seeing general deterioration. I was shocked to see my
room in West Hostel - so
dilapidated stained plaster. My colleagues talked about heart, liver,
kidney and brain diseases. And
yet, out of the lecture theatre, 85% people who were poor, needed medical
care for hookworm,
roundworm, malaria, Kala azar, TB.. They needed health education,
importance of hygiene and safe
drinking water. We addressed only 15% of population, 85% remained
unaddressed, untouched. We
must put our priorities right. And wrong priorities are what ails Bihar.
Hardly few thinks about 85% of
       poor, deprived, disadvantaged Bihari.
I am sure people will say I live in England, come to Bihar once or twice a
year and just moan and

complain. They will be justified in their complain. They may also say as
to what have I done for Bihar.
Well, just a little. I created two jobs; a driver and a cook for my car and
home. I will be giving four
awards , each of Rs. 5000/-, to four poor and deprived students admitted
to first year MBBS in
Darbhanga Medical College every year. A boy and a girl from Muslim
community and a boy and a girl
from schedule caste Hindu community. This would enable them to buy items
like books, stationary and
clothes. This is the least I could do as a Bihari..

The Above article represents the ground realities prevailing in our
esteemed home state, a contrast in terms of good development taking off in face
of serious deficiencies.

Realizing why it is not easy to change, although not impossible, is perhaps how
reporting by people like Lord Macaulay hijacked the Indian identity to Western
orientation, apparently a virtue established and deliberately recognized
superior to our cultural roots.
To see the design of our rulers in during Imperial India readers are requested
to go through the following passage, may be once again.

Dr. Kumar qualifies for indeed much applause for his gesture to the people of
Bihar. Thanks to Bihar Times too for reporting such inspirational news about
our native state.

Dear Bajrang ji,
I am forwarding the April edition of Sablog in which there is an article on
education. I have mentioned the importance of the Netarhat model for Indian

Press Release

If it had not breached at Kusaha, it would have anyway breached at this point,
points a villager towards the probable location on the eastern bank in village
Rajabaas near Prakashpur in Sunsari district of Nepal, located 14 km upstream of
Kusaha where the Eastern Afflux embankment of the Kosi had breached on the
August 18, 2008.

The river has indeed come close to the embankment at the site and with the spurs
that protect the embankment in no good condition, a potential danger lurks. The
setting is seemingly perfect for another breach! The state has just woken up,
collecting stones for the protection work in case the river decides to gnaw the
embankment. Should that happen, what course the river would adopt before it
joins that Ganga is not known just as it was not known the course last year
following the breach at Kusaha?

So, thats what the Water Resources Department leaves it during this year to be
reaped (faced) by the Disaster (mis)Management Department of the state. Since
there is no dialogue between the two, the vicious cycle gets perpetuated year
after year.

That is the inference of a team of 15 professionals and social workers that
visited the area hit by last years devastating floods of the Kosi during March
21-27, 2009. The team noted that the repair works at Kusaha are far from
complete although the engineers at site claim that they will complete the work
to their entire satisfaction by April 20, 2009, eight months after the last
years disaster, before fresh water reaches the site following snow-melt in
upper catchment. This claim will have to be verified in days to come.

Everyone hopes that they are not caught on the wrong foot again! The Kosi flood
disaster of 2008 was spread over 5 districts, 35 blocks, 993 villages affecting
33.29 lakh people and spread over an area of 3.68 lakh hectares in India alone
which resulted in loss of nearly 600 persons and destruction of 2.37 lakh
houses. But for the colour of the sand, a vast area of the Kosi basin now
resembles Jaisalmer (Rajasthan) and may need the help of the experts of Central
Arid Zone Research Institute CAZRI, Jodhpur for revival of agriculture in the
region.

That is only one half the story. The other half about which no concern is shown
by anybody (Government and NGOs included) comprises of nearly 1.5 million people
spread over 414 villages trapped between the two embankments of the Kosi which
is the route of the normal river flow in a normal year. We literally have our
houses on our shoulders and despite using weed or wood fired chulha for cooking,
no cobwebs are seen on our thatched roofs. We have to shift our houses much
before spiders start developing the webs, says a resident of village Nirmali,
trapped between the two embankments of the Kosi in Supaul district. Their
problem is perennial just as the flow of the river.

The team visited the Bhutahi Balan and the Kamla Balan basins and finally landed
up in the Bagmati where mammoth embankments are being built or repaired. These
are being raised and strengthened to provide a greater degree of protection to
the people living outside them. But from Dheng to Runni Saidpur there is hardly
any reach of the embankment that has not faced the wrath of the river and the
breaches and yet the people and the Government believe that these structures
would protect them from floods.

That silt contained in the river waters is equally responsible for the
devastation that is caused by rising bed level of the rivers and subsequent
failure of the embankments can be seen in the villages of Raksia and Ibrahimpur
of Runnisaidpur block of Sitamarhi district. A 27 feet high mosque in Raksia is
submerged in sand and only top 5 feet is visible above the ground while a temple
of Lord Shiva has to be dug out every year from the sand to offer puja in the
latter. Will the engineers and the politicians ever recognize the secular
behaviour of our rivers?

The team was shocked by the joke that is played in the name of the development
in Kaala Pani area of Runnisaidpur. Nearly 75 squire kilometers of land has been
submerged because the embankments on the Bagmati blocked the entry of the
Manusmara into it and as if that were not sufficient, the unprocessed effluents
from a sugar mill were dumped into the Manusmara to make the submergence black
and stinking. No agriculture is possible with such waters and there has been
no crops in the area for the past ten years now. The farmers of Kaala Pani
remain engaged in agriculture, but in Punjab and Haryana.

Nalanda University project has implications on globalised world

SINGAPORE: The Nalanda University in India's Bihar state is part
of a larger Asian renaissance, says Singapore's Foreign Minister George
Yeo. And its emphasis on the free exchange of ideas has implications on
today's globalised world.

Some paintings by Singapore artist Tan Swie Hian are inspired by
India's Nalanda University, a centre of intellectual open-mindedness in
the ancient world.

Its modern-day revival is driven by the desire to bring back that spirit of
enlightenment.

The Nalanda University of the fifth century was, for many years,
the seat of Buddhist learning, attracting scholars from all over Asia.

And in a nod to this ancient heritage, the Nalanda of the 21st century
hopes to be a centre for inter-faith dialogue, and a bridge between
South and East Asia.

The secular varsity will have six faculties, offering post-graduate studies in
philosophy, tourism and Asian history.

Singapore's foreign minister - who is a member of a multi-national
steering group behind the project, called the Nalanda Mentor Group -
said it is part of a larger Asian renaissance. But it will take some
years to bear fruit.

Mr Yeo said: "There'll be many practical problems, because Nalanda
will be established in the state of Bihar, which is one of the more
backward states in India. Infrastructure is woeful. But the plans are
there, it will take time, the important thing is support from the
highest levels in India."

The steering group's first meeting was in Singapore two years ago.
Since then, discussions have been held in Tokyo, New York and New
Delhi.

The final meeting will take place in Bihar, India, on Thursday, and
a proposal will be presented at the East Asian Summit in Thailand at
the end of the month.

The university was initially set to admit its first students this
year, but Mr Yeo said that would not be likely now because of
administrative issues. - CNA/de

Singapore: Visit by Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo to India, 19 - 21
February 2009

               Minister
for Foreign Affairs George Yeo will visit India from 19 to 21 February
2009 to participate in the fifth and final Nalanda Mentor Group (please
see Annex for a complete list of members of the Group) Meeting in Bodh
Gaya, Bihar, India. He will be accompanied by Professor Wang Gungwu,
Chairman of East Asia Institute and Alternate Member of the Nalanda
Mentor Group, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
representatives from the Singapore Buddhist Federation and Singapore
Buddhist Lodge.

Chaired by Nobel Laureate Professor Amartya Sen (Economics Department,
Harvard University), the Nalanda Mentor Group aims to conceptualise the
revival of the proposed Nalanda University in Bihar, India. The ancient
Nalanda University, established in about 5th century AD or earlier, was
pre-eminent for over seven centuries, with about 10,000 international
students and 1,500 teachers at its prime. Indian Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh announced at the East Asia Summit in Cebu in January
2007 that India intended to redevelop Nalanda University as a centre
for learning and inter-faith dialogue, and that India welcomed
cooperation from member countries of the East Asia Summit. Singapore
hosted the inaugural meeting of the Nalanda Mentor Group in July 2007
and three further meetings were held in Tokyo, New York and New Delhi.
To help raise public awareness of the project, an exhibition "On the
Nalanda Trail: Buddhism in India, China and Southeast Asia" was held by
the Asian Civilisation Museum in Singapore from November 2007 to March
2008. The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies has also organised an
international conference on "Buddhism Across Asia: Networks of
Material, Intellectual and Cultural Exchange" in Singapore from 16 to
18 February 2009. Professor Amartya Sen gave a special keynote address
on Nalanda at this conference earlier today. He departs Singapore for
Bihar to attend the Nalanda Mentor Group meeting tomorrow.

The 5th Nalanda Mentor Group Meeting in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, seeks to
complete the discussion on the establishment of the Nalanda University.
After the meeting in Bodh Gaya is concluded, India is expected to
present its proposal to the East Asia Summit (EAS) for endorsement at
the next meeting in Thailand.

Professor Amartya Sen, Minister Yeo and other members of the Nalanda
Mentor Group will also visit the site of the new Nalanda University in
Bihar and meet Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar to discuss the
establishment of the new University.

My mother Mrs. Krishna Singh's job at various government schools in
Bihar, where even basic amenities did not exist, involved standing
for long hours and dealing with a defiant and rude society. Thanks to
her dedication and strong will power, not only did she complete an
eventful career with lan, she was never found faulting on any
occasion.

Unsurprisingly, she has been a role model for many in her community,
among colleagues, students and parents. For her family, she has at
all times served as the strongest role model. She means everything to
us and a lot to all those who have met her.

It was really great to see her waking up at her own time, doing her
own things, reading newspaper, cooking, not stressing, travelling to
her school, managing money, keeping records, planning insurance,
saving taxes, and keeping an excellent health. It has been great so
far. She's been able to be very active; and sort of her own boss,
always.

Every child considers his mom as the best. But for me, my mother has
been a very very special person. In all the world, there is no other
to take the place of my dear mother. We've laughed together, cried
together. Through this blog, I want the world to know how much I love
her. She is my heroine. Maa tujhe salaam

You may click http://neerajbhushan.wordpress.com/ to read more on my
mother.

Thank you with kindest regards.
