Team Samridhi emerge winners of the Delhi `Media Quiz'
May 14, 09

Puneet Bedi Bahri

Even before the first question was asked at the Delhi round of the
`Media Quiz', presented by exchange4media in association with
Star News, there was enough firepower on the stage. It was Team Samridhi
that beat the rest to the winning post. Along with Team Samridhi, Team
Krew Kut Klan has also qualified for the final round in Mumbai.

The venue for Media Quiz, Taj Ambassador at the National Capital, was
choc-a-block with participants and the audience.

The winning team Samridhi scored 110 points, while Krew Kut Klan scored
100 points. Each team comprised two members and there were a total six
teams that were selected to play from the 25 teams. The final six teams
were: Samridhi, Planet Elephant, Krew Kut Klan, Madison, ZenithOptimedia
and Mindshare.

A first of its kind initiative, exchange4media' s `Media
Quotient what's your MQ?', the Media Quiz 2009, will now
move to Kolkata on May 20 and Mumbai on May 22. Star News was the main
sponsor for Media Quiz 2009, while Mumbai Mirror is the associate
sponsor. Encompass is the event partner for Media Quiz 2009.

The gathering of the best brains and the magic of quizmasters Vikram
Sakhuja CEO, GroupM, India, and Sam Balsara, CMD, Madison India, created
a wonderful atmosphere. Innocean Worldwide's B Sridhar
conceptualised the whole concept.

Said Sakhuja, "This quiz was great fun. B Sridhar did a brilliant
job in conceptualising the quiz. The participants were great and I think
both the teams were up there."

On the crowd response, Balsara said, "I did not expect such a huge
turnout in Delhi. I knew the city was famous for many things, but the
crowd today pleasantly surprised me. It was a great experience to be the
quizmaster. I have never been one, nor have I ever participated in any
quiz. I give full marks to Sridhar for the concept."

Team Samridhi comprised Ranjeet and Vimal, who were quick off the mark
answering the questions posed at them. Sorbojeet Chatterjee and Aman
Nayyar made up Team Krew Kut Klan.

Neeraj Sanan, Vice-President - Marketing, MCCS, said, "This is first
of the kind event that we have partnered with. We want to do more such
events that are fun yet knowledgeable. This is the kind of platform that
we want to associate with. I am sure there will soon be 3-4 more such
events as such events tend to be cloned."

On how it felt to be part of the Media Quiz, Sorbojeet Chatterjee, Head
- Marketing Special Projects, TV Today Network Ltd, said, "It feels
great to have participated after a long time and feels nice to do so
well."

Sambit Mohanty, Executive Creative Director, Brand Planet Elephant,
said, "Coming to this quiz was a great experience. At first, I
thought this quiz would be all about numbers, but was pleasantly
surprised with the kind of interesting questions that were asked. It was
a great experience and I had a great time."

This is not a list of top ten information technology (IT) books
published during 2008 nor a list based on any objective criterion (like
number of copies sold). It is a list of top ten IT books at the end of
the year 2008. The books are also of general interest, that is,
non-technical IT books and the list excludes DIY manuals and technical
texts. The only criterion of selection I have used is that the book
should have excited me when it came to my notice for the first time and
sustained my interest in reading it. When I decided to prepare the list,
I did not realize that the task was so difficult, for I would have loved
to include many more books but couldn't due to limitation on number!
So here is my list, subjective as it is:

1. Negroponte, Nicholas (1996): Being Digital, London, Hodder and
Stoughton. First published in 1995.

ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1230054110&sr=1-1> ).

(Told me about the difference between atoms (physical world) and bit
(electronic world).

2. Gates, Bill with Nathan Myhrvold (1995): The Road Ahead, London,
Penguin.

eader_auth_dp> ).

(The first visionary account of IT I read by Gates Version 1.0 when he
was an IT missionary. Gates Version 2.0 turned out to be a pure
businessman).

3. Dertouzos, Michael L. (1997): What Will Be: How the New World of
Information Will Change Our Lives, New York, Harper Collins.

(A guide to the future speculating about wide varieties of technologies
and gadgets. It has a chapter on government too).

4. Gilder, George (2000): Telecosm: How Infinite Bandwidth Will
Revolutionize Our World, New York, The Free Press.

(The first book which told me about the telecom infrastructure,
particularly fibre-optic cables and subsequent promise of availability
of cheap bandwidth).

5. Hafner, Katie and Matthew Lyon (1996): Where Wizards Stay Up Late:
The Origins of the Internet, New York, Simon and Schuster.

(The first "definitive" history of the origin of Internet I read
which kept me awake too.).

6. Brooks, Frederick (2000): The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software

published 1975.

(The fact that it was widely quoted aroused my curiosity and when I read
it I found it pure gold!).

(All about human consciousness and the still continuing debate about man
versus computer by a powerful mind).

(Note: The cited books and their hyperlinks may some times not match due
to place of publication).

Does any book qualify to be called a "classic," a book which
does not date and invites you to be read again? I am afraid not. The
nearest a book goes to the level of a classic is Brooks' Mythical
Man-Month but the book has become out of date. No other book attracts
you to be read again, their arguments, insights, etc. having become
familiar and thus uninviting. Note also that no book published during
last seven years (2002-08) figures in the list. Is it a sign of a
decline in creativity? It appears that an IT classic is yet to be
written. Any takers?

Would you like to include any book in the list or, for that matter,
exclude any book. Comments welcome.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Dr D.C.Misra

This paper*, according to the website, gives an overview of the rural

development strategy adopted by government of India and major e-

governance initiatives that have been undertaken in the rural

of Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MICT)is

mandated, among other things,to provide informatics services to

various user agencies in the government. This paper provides a

comprehensive coverage of various departments and official

institutions and various systems developed by the NIC.It also

provides a number of useful URLs.Descriptive in nature,it is a

useful introduction to official rural informatics in India.

\
*Dr Tony Storey and Professor Wenfei Fan have been awarded the British
Computer Society Lovelace Medal and Roger Needham Award respectively.
Between them, the two internationally renowned figures represent the
world's leading authorities on mission critical computing and open
standards, and database research.

The Lovelace Medal and Roger Needham Award are presented annually by the
BCS in recognition of contributions made by individuals to the
development of IT.

Dr Tony Storey has been given the award in recognition of his
contribution in the advancement of information systems to mission
critical computing. He is recognised as one of the leading UK IT
industry role models and has architected and guided development of
software that underpins much of the global economy.

Dr Storey's work at IBM's UK Labs has led to the transformation and
revitalisation of CICS, the invention of MQSeries and extensions of Java
for use in the server environment. He has championed major national UK
e-Science initiatives and has encouraged IBM to embrace open software
standards, bringing together Web Services and GRID computing
technologies to deliver open mission critical computing.

Commenting on Dr Storey's achievements, David Clarke, BCS chief
executive says: "I am delighted that the BCS is able to recognise Dr
Storey with this prestigious award. The contribution he has made to the
UK's standing in IT is exceptional. He is a worldwide authority on
high-availability, continuous operations and fault tolerant computing
and his GRID computing collaboration with UK academia has shaped
industry thinking on the middleware infrastructure needed for commercial
GRID exploitation. Tony's influence on open standards continues with Web
Services, so shaping the future evolution of the IT industry. A truly
deserved recipient of the Lovelace Medal."

The Roger Needham Award, sponsored by Microsoft Research Cambridge, is
presented to Professor Wenfei Fan who is universally recognised to be a
world leading researcher in both theory and practice of databases.

The general goal of Professor Fan's work has been to bring the
efficiency and functionality of databases, which has been built up over
the past 30 years and has solid theoretical foundations, to bear on data
on the web. In the past a few years his research has contributed to the
UK's standing in this area, and in particular, to the UK's worldwide
lead in the studies of integrity constraints for XML, XML publishing,
and data quality. His work has resulted in not only a number of
fundamental results, but also several practical developments including
schema-directed XML publishing techniques, XML access control solutions,
and a method of data cleaning based on conditional dependencies, a form
of dependencies that Professor Fan invented for this purpose.

Dr Andrew Herbert, Managing Director of Microsoft Research Cambridge
says: "Professor Fan's work is truly advancing the state of the art in
database theory and practice. The purpose of the Roger Needham award is
to recognize and support talented researchers such as Professor Fan,
whose work is an example of the academic significance and technical
impact of UK based-researchers and institutions."

The BCS Lovelace Medal was established in 1998 in honour of Lady Augusta
Ada Byron, Countess of Lovelace and daughter of Lord Byron. She was the
assistant and patron of Charles Babbage and wrote programs for his
"Analytical Engine", now recognised as the first computer program.

The Medal is presented annually to individuals who, in the opinion of
BCS, have made a significant contribution to the advancement of
Information Systems.

As winner, Dr Storey will be invited to give the BCS Lovelace Lecture in
2009

The Roger Needham award, part of the British Computer Society's remit to
encourage and recognise personal endeavour in computer science, is
sponsored by Microsoft Research Cambridge and established in memory of
Microsoft's first director of research outside the US. It is awarded for
a distinguished research contribution in computer science by a UK based
researcher within ten years of their PhD. It offers a 5000 prize
together with an opportunity to give a public lecture on their work at
the Royal Society.

As winner, Professor Fan will be invited to give the Roger Needham
Lecture in November 2008.
