If Australians were asked to name a national hero, they may well refer to Sir Donald Bradman. Nick Bryant made a pilgrimage to the hometown of cricket's first superstar.
To visit the sleepy town of Bowral, New South Wales, feels a little like making the journey to Memphis, Tennessee.
For lovers of the bat and ball, it offers the same sense of pilgrimage as Graceland does for fans of rock and roll.
True, there is none of the gaudy glitz and little of the tacky memorabilia that adorns the home of Elvis.
But as you drive into Bowral, you are greeted with an over-sized cricket ball, just as the gates of Elvis's mansion are adorned with electric guitars. This the home of a man known reverentially as "the Don", Sir Donald Bradman, cricket's unrivalled "king".
Schoolboy century
The museum in which he is memorialised is a treasure trove of baggy green caps, antique willow bats and dog-eared newspaper clippings which record his batting heroics.
Outside is the most holy of turf, The Bradman Oval, where, at the age of just 12, "the Boy from Bowral" scored his first century.
There is also a bronze statute featuring the diminutive batsman in characteristic pose, raising his cap to receive the approbation of the crowd, as he celebrated yet another hundred.
Like most cricket fans, I have never seen Bradman play. I have watched only a few grainy snippets of black and white news reel and heard the warm crackle of a few radio commentaries.
Rare duck
Instead, I know Bradman by a number - 99.94 - his batting average when his test career was brought to a sooner-than-expected halt.

Dhoni, Yuvraj clinch ICC awards

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41350000/jpg/_41350926_winners_ap300.jpg

THE WAIT for annual International Cricket Council (ICC) awards ended yesterday night (September 10). Organised in the glamorous city of Dubai, the awards function brought double treat for India. India’s one-day international (ODI) captain and wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni bagged the ODI ’Player of the Year’ award. While Indian ODI vice-captain, Yuvraj Singh clinched the ’Twenty20 International Performance of the Year’ award. West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul won ’Cricketer of the Year’ award and South African Dale Steyn lifted the ’Test Cricketer of the Year’ award.

World’s current number one ODI batsman, Dhoni beat team-mate Sachin Tendulkar, Pakistani batsman Mohammad Yousuf and Australian fast bowler Nathan Bracken to take the honour. During the period of voting, the Indian ODI captain played 39 ODIs and scored 1,298 runs at an average of 49.92 with a strike rate of 82.46 runs per 100 balls faced. Dhoni scored a century and nine 50s and led his team to victories many time. Besides, in the role of wicketkeeper, Dhoni claimed 62 dismissals (46 catches and 16 stumpings).

Yuvraj Singh was honoured with the T20 award for his six sixes in an over off English bowler Stuart Broad in the inaugural Twenty20 world championship in South Africa last year. Yuvraj Singh was facing stiff competition from ODI captain Dhoni, Chris Gayle of the West Indies and Australia’s Brett Lee.

West Indies’ veteran player Shivnarine Chanderpaul was honoured with ’Cricketer of the Year’ award for his fine performances in tests and limited overs cricket. Chanderpaul beat Srilankan captain Mahela Jayawardena and South Africans Graeme Smith and Dale Steyn. During the voting period, Chandepaul played eight test matches, scoring 819 runs at an average of 91.00, with three centuries and six 50s. He also played 13 ODIs during that time, scored 598 at an average of 74.75 that included a century and five fifties.

South African fast bowler Steyn bagged the Test Cricketer of the Year award.

Steyn beat off Chanderpaul, Jayawardene and team-mate Jacques Kallis to win the first ICC award of his career. During the voting period, Steyn took 86 wickets at an average of just 18.10 in the 14 test matches.

Two other Indians, Tendulkar and Ishant Sharma failed to win ODI Best Player and Emerging Player awards respectively at the glittering ceremony. Ishant lost the crown to Sri Lankan unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis, who swept the Emerging Player of the Year award.

However, Tendulkar, found a place in the 12-man World ODI Team of the Year led by Australian Ricky Ponting. On the other hand, Virender Sehwag is the only Indian cricketer included in the 12-man World Test Team of the Year led by South African Graeme Smith.

World Test Team of the Year (in batting order):
Graeme Smith (South Africa, captain); Virender Sehwag (India); Mahela Jayawardena (Sri Lanka); Shivnarine Chanderpaul (West Indies); Kevin Pietersen (England); Jacques Kallis (South Africa); Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka, wicket keeper); Brett Lee (Australia); Ryan Sidebottom (Eng); Dale Steyn (South Africa); Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka); 12th man: Stuart Clark (Australia)

ICC World ODI Team of the Year (in batting order):

5 minute - Management Course

Lesson 1:
A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is
finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings.

The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and
runs downstairs.

When she opens the door, there stands Bob,
the next-door neighbour.

Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800
to drop that towel.'

After thinking for a moment, the woman drops
her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after
a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves.

The woman wraps back up in the towel and
goes back upstairs.

When she gets to the bathroom, her husband
asks, 'Who was that?'

'It was Bob the next door neighbour,' she replies.

'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything
about the $800 he owes me?'

Moral of the story:

If you share critical information pertaining to
credit and risk with your shareholders in time,
you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.

Lesson 2:

A priest offered a Nun a lift.

She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her
gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had
an accident.

After controlling the car, he stealthily slid
his hand up her leg.

The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?'

The priest removed his hand. But, changing
gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again.
The nun once again said, 'Father, remember
Psalm 129?'

The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh
is weak.'

Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily
and went on her way.

On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed
to look up Psalm 129. It said, 'Go forth and seek,
further up, you will find glory.'

Moral of the story:

If you are not well informed in your job, you might
miss a great opportunity.

Lesson 3:

A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the
manager are walking to lunch when they find
an antique oil lamp.

They rub it and a Genie comes out.

The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just one wish.'

'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want
to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without
a care in the world.'

Puff! She's gone.

'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to
be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my
personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina
Coladas and the love of my life.'

Puff! He's gone.

'OK, you're up,' the Genie says to the manager.
The manager says, 'I want those two back in the
office after lunch.'

Moral of the story:

Always let your boss have the first say.

Lesson 4

An eagle was sitting on a tree resting,
doing nothing.

A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him,
'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?'

The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.'

So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the
eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox
appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Moral of the story:

To be sitting and doing nothing, you must
be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson 5

A turkey was chatting with a bull.

'I would love to be able to get to the top of
that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't
got the energy.'

'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my
droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed
with nutrients.'

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and
found it actually gave him enough strength
to reach the lowest branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating some more dung,
he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was
proudly perched at the top of the tree..

He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who
shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story:

Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it
won't keep you there..

Lesson 6

A little bird was flying south for the winter.
It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the
ground into a large field.

While he was lying there, a cow came by
and dropped some dung on him.

As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow
dung, he began to realize how warm he was.

The dung was actually thawing him out!

He lays there all warm and happy, and soon
began to sing for joy.

A passing cat heard the bird singing and
came to investigate.

Following the sound, the cat discovered
the bird under the pile of cow dung, and
promptly dug him out and ate him.

Morals of the story:

(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.

(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your
friend.

(3) And when you're in deep shit, it's best to keep
your mouth shut!

Congratulations! !! THIS ENDS YOUR 5 MINUTE MANAGEMENT COURSE

And send this to five bright people
who have enough sense of humor
to take it!

On that note: Also avoid using disposable chopsticks in the restaurant. Apparently they have been bleached to look white! We certainly don't need bleach in our body.
Basically do not buy any processed food from China and sometimes Hong Kong too. Some companies are using Hong Kong address to avoid this type of image reputation.

The ICC Executive Board will take a final decision on whether the Champions Trophy, which has been postponed till 2009, should remain in Pakistan or be relocated during a meeting in March next year.

Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board have confirmed that March is the deadline for confirming the venue of the tournament which was to be held in Pakistan from September 12 but has been postponed due to the security concerns raised by some teams.

"The ICC is having a meeting on September 11 and 12 to decide the best dates for the tournament when it is held next year. But the final decision on whether it will remain in Pakistan will be taken in March," one source said.

He said in case some countries still refuse to play in Pakistan next year, the ICC will relocate it but Pakistan would get compensation of USD three million which is the hosting fees for the event.

"The ICC member countries have basically decided to wait and see if the situation changes in Pakistan in the next six months and if this happens then the Champions Trophy would remain with us," the source said.

The ICC has also asked its member countries to send in suggestions for making slight changes in the Future Tours Program to accommodate new dates for the eight-nation tournament.

"There will be some changes in the FTP as the Champions Trophy where ever it is held will take three weeks for which all teams must be available," the source said.

He confirmed that the ICC Executive Board teleconference in which it was decided to postpone the Champions Trophy some members had pushed for the ICC to announce a new venue the same day.

"But we and India threatened to boycott the event if any hasty decision was made after which it was decided to adopt a wait and see policy until next march.

"The Indian team's tour to Pakistan from early January will be used to make assessments about the security situation in Pakistan," he stated.

It is very true and secret news. Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh was slapped in a disco in Colombo , while the team was celebrating the series win over the host srilanka.

The Incident took place in a disco in the heart of city Colombo, where the Indian cricket team was celebrating their 2nd best achievement after the T 20 cricket world cup win. Every one was enjoying and partying hard and why not ? they have done very hard work for this.

But there are people in this world who can't be satisfied irrespective of whatever you do.

During the party , a emotional hardcore Yuvraj singh fan, came and slapped yuvi because of his failure in the series with Srilanka. After slapping yuvraj, the person ran away and every one was shocked and they did not know what to do, but after few minutes of tense environment, the party was continued.

Every one knows that you can win the most difficult battles in the field but winning the Fans is the hardest of all job.

One should understand that cricketers of any celebrities are also human being and they do have some limitation, and its really bad to over expect from them every time. one should always accept the failures and success of their heroes equally.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has for the first time shown some leniency towards players contracted with the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) by allowing former Test pacer Shabbir Ahmed to practice at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Shabbir was among the original list of 16 players who signed up with the ICL in 2007 and since then the board has placed a complete ban on these players to take part in any cricket activity in Pakistan.

Shabbir showed up at the academy on Thursday and had a long bowling session at the nets. "I am preparing for the start of the new ICL season this year and so far no one has told me not to practice here," he said.

"There was never any ban on Shabbir Ahmed to practice ... he is only banned from representing Pakistan in Tests and ODIs and from first class cricket," a senior board official explained.

"He is a Pakistani and we have no objection in his practicing at NCA," Shafqat Naghmi the chief operating officer said.

But he made it clear that this should not be seen as the board deciding to reconsider its stance on ICL players.

"Any player who has represented Pakistan can practice here but that does not mean we are thinking about changing our policy on the ICL. It remains the same when the ICC recognises it we will also adopt a softer line," he stated.

Shabbir, whose bowling action has always under the scanner, hoped the board would allow them to play the domestic season starting October.

"Right now I am here to train and get tips from Aaqib Javed and Geoff Lawson who are at the academy," he stated.

Village boys give India their best show

'Lucky' Sushil wrestles to bronze

Sushil Kumar attends the medal ceremony for the 66kg men's freestyle wrestling in Beijing

BEIJING: Repechage. This French word literally means "to rescue". It also means "second life". On Wednesday evening here, an unknown boy who lives just minutes away from superstar Virender Sehwag's home in Delhi's Najafgarh, went into the ring trying to give a meaning to these words.

He may not have known where this word comes from but he knew what it wanted him to do - fight to save his life in the ring, fight to do what no other Indian wrestler had done in 56 years.

Sushil Kumar fought three bouts in a row and in the process gave a new life to the traditional sport of wrestling, a sport which thrives in the dusty akharas of Indian hinterland.

He first beat USA's Doug Scwab, then got the better of Belarussian Albert Batryov and finally grappled with Kazakhstan's Leonid Spiridinov to make history. It was a nerve-wracking contest.

The two were locked at points and a toss was made to decide who would attack in the final 30 seconds. The Kazakh won the toss but Sushil's terrific counter stunned his opponent. Sushil held him in a clinch and there was no way he would let him get away.

Having done the unthinkable, Sushil walked out of the hall looking dazed, barely spoke a few words and was then taken to the dope control room. He emerged half an hour later, looking tired. "Bahut takleef mein hoon, mujhe jaane do sir," he said. You wondered what was wrong. He had had too much water to drink for the dope test and was eager for a toilet break.

The waiting media was not willing to oblige and Sushil, not yet sure what all this meant, said politely: "I'm happy that I did it for my country. I can't thank my coaches Sat Palji and Kartar Singhji and my parents enough.

"But I would like to say that for more such medals in the future we have to take better care of wrestlers. There should be proper diet, training, coaching, masseurs, doctors... There is no dearth of talent in our country."

He continued: "I was the first wrestler to qualify and had a full year to train. So it helped."

Sushil then talked about how his father would get milk for him every morning so that he could be strong enough to train. "He did that for years, without fail. He was sure I could do something big," he said, getting emotional.

Did he know that the medal was coming when he went into the last round? "No one knows that. You just fight. I was tense this morning but Kartarji kept massaging my body the whole day. He is a double Asian Games gold medallist, secretary of the wrestling federation. I felt bad, awkward but he insisted that it was necessary."

It surely was, and Kartar, standing next to him smiled. "We don't have masseurs and doctors here with our team. I was his coach, his masseur, his trainer, his motivator. It was my responsibility to do it. But I would now request the government to give better facilities to the wrestlers. There are just 5 coaches in Punjab, whereas you need 100. A lot needs to be done. Hopefully, this medal will change things," Kartar said.

Hopefully it will, as the wrestling body in the country has been in a mess for a long time. Elections were held four times in the last two years and if a wrestler has managed to come out of it all and win an Olympics medal, it speaks volumes for his grit and the burning desire to excel.

Vijender, the glamboy of Indian boxing

His drop-dead looks and chiselled jaws could give country's Bollywood stars and models a run for their money. But what Vijender Kumar knows best is to punch his opponents in the boxing ring as he showed in Beijing on Wednesday becoming the first Indian pugilsit to reach the Olympic semifinal.

The strapping 23-year-old Vijender is part of Bhiwani's boxing brigade, three of whom have done the country proud by making it to the quarterfinals of the Olympics. Vijender, though, made sure of at least a bronze medal after the disappointing loss of his stable-mates Akhil Kumar and Jitender Kumar.

Boxing came naturally to Vijender as he picked up the sport inspired by his brother Manoj, a national champion.

Born in Kaluwas village in Bhiwani, Haryana, Vijender started to train at Bhiwani's Sports Authority of India (SAI)centre where coach Jagdish Singh honed his in-born talent.

His father Mahipal Singh is in a government job and his mother is a housewife. Vijender did his primary schooling from his village, secondary school from Bhiwani and finally a bachelor's degree from Vaish College.

Vijender won silver medal in his first sub-junior nationals and then finished the second sub-junior in the same position. He graduated to the junior national competitions steadily and was picked to visit several countries like Cuba for further training and competitions.

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Vijender contested in the welterweight division, but lost to Mustafa Karagollu of Turkey.

At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, he defeated England's Neil Perkins in the semis but lost to South Africa's Bongani Mwelase, who went on to win the gold.

He then won silver at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006.

He went up a division and competed in the Middleweight (75 kg) division at the 2006 Asian Games winning the bronze medal in a lost semifinal bout against Kazakhstan's Bakhtiyar Artayev 24-29.

Vijender then qualified for Beijing with a bang, winning gold at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Kazakhstan.

Anju disappoints with three foul jumps

Anju Bobby George

Anju Bobby George broke a billion hearts on Tuesday when she failed to qualify for the final of the women's long jump at the Beijing Olympics after three consecutive foul jumps.

It was a big disappointment not only for Indian fans but also the athlete herself, as she failed to register even a single clean jump, stepping over the board in all three chances.

It required an out of the skin showing to make it to the final as the qualifying cut out was as high as 6.75 metres or the 12 best jumps.

Since attaining her best of 6.83 metres at the Athens Games, where she placed sixth, four years ago, Anju hasn't been in the best of form, but was at least expected to go past the qualifying mark.

Now Indian medal hopes from the track and field rest in the 4 x 400 metres relay team, comprising Mandeep Kaur, Chitra Soman, S Geetha, Sini Jose, M R Povamma and K Mridula.

Karachi: Controversial fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was on Saturday asked by Pakistan Cricket Board to pay the fine of seven million rupees imposed on him or forget playing in next month's Champions Trophy.

The fast bowler was served a legal notice on Saturday by the legal counsel of the board who said the fine had to be paid as per court orders or else Akhtar would be dropped from Pakistan's squad for the mega tournament.

"We have asked him to pay the fine or it would not be possible for us to retain him in Champions Trophy squad," PCB lawyer Tafazzul Rizvi said.

Akhtar was picked in the 15-member Champions Trophy squad by the selectors with the board saying it had decided not to link the fine payment issue with his selection.

But Rizvi said Akhtar will have to pay the fine as Lahore High Court which has suspended the 18-month ban on Akhtar had not waived fine payment nor given any stay order against it.

"There is no court order saying he should not pay the fine. Even if the court upholds his petition against the ban and fine it will be refunded to him but he has to pay the fine now," Rizvi said.

The fast bowler had responded to an earlier board notice that the court had not set any deadline for paying the fine and he would wait for the court decision on his petition which will be heard next month.

Akhtar, who has not played for Pakistan since last December, was banned for five years by the board in March on various counts of indiscipline but an appellate tribunal in June reduced the ban to 18 months.

He then filed a writ petition in Lahore High Court asking for the ban and fine to be overturned. The court suspended the ban but has not passed any order on the fine.

Karachi: Desperate to probe his innocence in the Indian Premier League doping scam, embattled Pakistan pacer Mohammad Asif and his lawyer have left for Geneva, on Friday night, where his "B" sample test would be conducted on Monday.

Asif, who tested positive for a performance- enhancing drug during the IPL, would come to know whether he faces more disciplinary action or not only after the "B" sample test.

Asif's lawyer Shahid Karim has informed that they have hired a British sports medicine specialist Dr Graham who would accompany them to ensure that the test is conducted under specifications of the World Anti-Doping Agency rules.

"We have obtained the best possible help to assist us in the case as Asif is adamant he is innocent," Karim said.

Although the pacer -- who spent 19-days in detention in Dubai airport for carrying a banned substance while returning home from India after playing in the IPL -- has a tainted past, he said he was mentally prepared to face every situation and insisted that he never did anything wrong in his career.

"We are having the 'B' sample test for the reconfirmation. And we have to be present there. Inshallah! I will be cleared," said Asif, who had tested positive along with fellow paceman Shoaib Akhtar for banned substance - Nandrolone in 2006 before the Champions Trophy, but escaped bans after an Appellate Tribunal cleared them on technical grounds.

Asif is presently suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board and was not selected in next month's Champions Trophy squad, but he maintained he would come out clean and earn his place back in the national team.

"If I am cleared which I am confident I will be, I will try to make a place for myself in the Pakistan team as soon as possible," he said.

Dubai: Indian ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni can inch closer to top spot of ICC batting chart if he continues his good form of the Asia Cup in the five-match series against Sri Lanka starting on Monday..

Dhoni, who was on top of the batting list for a week in April 2006, is 19 points adrift of table topper South African Graeme Smith in the latest ICC ODI batting list with 773 rating points to his kitty.

Sixth-placed Sachin Tendulkar is likely to lose ground after an elbow injury has sidelined him for the ODI series. A player loses one per cent of his rating for missing every match.

Yuvraj Singh (15th) and Gautam Gambhir (19th) are the other India batsmen in the top 20. Both are well placed to move upwards if they perform well in the forthcoming matches.

Sri Lanka's 10th-placed Kumar Sangakkara can cause some reshuffling in the top 10 while veteran teammate Sanath Jayasuriya (15th) also has a top 10 spot firmly within his sights.

In the bowlers' list, headed by Australian Nathan Bracken, off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is the highest ranked Indian at 24th and is well placed to enter the top 20.

Mumbai: Sri Lanka’s Dammika Prasad’s recent success in Test cricket has earned him double offer from two Indian Premier League (IPL) teams – Team Hyderabad and Team Bangalore – for the next season.

"I have been approached by Hyderabad and Bangalore and that is quite exciting," Prasad has been quoted as saying in The Times of India on Saturday.

The new ball bowler who had an interesting Test debut scalping the prize wickets of Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid among others, left for South Africa to play a series of matches for the Sri Lankan A team.

No one can replace Tendulkar: Dhoni

Bangalore The experienced Indian Test team may have come a cropper in Sri Lanka but ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Tuesday hoped that his boys will not let the country down in the shorter version of the game against the island nation starting August 18.

"It is a different side. We hope to do better," Dhoni told reporters after winding up a two-day skill orientation and conditioning camp at the National Cricket Academy here.

He said the team would focus on spin and fast bowling in the upcoming five one-dayers against Sri Lanka..

"Some pitches in Sri Lanka help spinners and in some others fast bowlers do well," said the Indian captain who leaves for Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

Dhoni, who has recently been chosen for the Rajiv Khel Ratna award, refused to share the team's plans against mystery Sri Lankan leg spinner Ajantha Mendis, who played a big role in his country's 2-1 Test series win against India.

"Let us see," he replied, when asked what the team would do to keep the young Lankan at bay.

Dhoni said the camp, also attended by six of his teammates, focussed on bowling, batting and conditioning aspects.

On Tendulkar being ruled out of the ODI series, Dhoni said, "We will certainly miss him. Nobody can replace Sachin Tendulkar."

Tendulkar opted out of the ODI series after injuring his left elbow during the third Test while attempting to take a catch to dismiss Chaminda Vaas.

Aaj ka Arjun: 'Practice' made him perfect

Abhinav Bindra during his 10m air rifle

NEW DELHI: It's a modern, slightly altered version of the Swiss folktale where William Tell, a 14th century rebel, shot an apple off his son's head with an arrow. When just seven years old, Abhinav Bindra placed an empty bottle on the head of one of his domestic maids, took aim and before anybody could notice fired the airgun. Abhinav was too young to understand the dangerous implication of his act. But no harm was done: as in Beijing on Monday, Bindra was bang on target.

Eight years ago, when Abhinav was just 17 years old, this childhood anecdote was narrated to this reporter by AS Bindra, Abhinav's businessman father. It was a rainy August afternoon. And we had travelled by the Shatabdi Express to Chandigarh to interview India's youngest medal hope for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Abhinav was practicing in the specially constructed air-conditioned shooting range in his backyard and didn't want to be disturbed. He sent a message through his father that he wouldn't like to speak to any journalist till the Olympics were over. I pleaded with his father. "It's a full page story, sir. Surely he can spare a few minutes during lunch time."

His father wasn't sure. "I will try," he said, "but why don't you talk to me instead? I will tell you each and everything about him in detail," he said. Bindra senior spoke to us for over an hour. He told us how Abhinav hated hockey, the sport that his grandfather Colonel Bir Singh had played alongside Dhyanchand, the wizard of the sport. A good raconteur, he remembered having spotted his son's talent for marksmanship at an early age and taking him to Lt Col JS Dhillon, a coach and former national shooter.

Since Abhinav did well in the aptitude tests, Dhillon suggested that he should have a good weapon. "So I bought him a German air rifle, Fien Werbau for about $1,500," Bindra senior said. The investment grew multi-fold over the years. But why air rifle? "That's because it involves no ammunition and is the easiest to get started with," he said.
Abhinav's father also pointed out, rather proudly, that his son had done extremely well in his studies. Abhinav had achieved 86% in his Class XII exams. And after the interview was over, he gave me a detailed resume of his son.

Before leaving, I just asked him to request his son once more. Just in case, he had changed his mind and could spare a few minutes. This time Abhinav agreed. "Just keep it brief," he said. It was clear he wanted the interview to get over fast.

It wasn't much of an interview. Abhinav spoke in short, staccato sentences. He confessed being shy by nature and that the solitariness of the sports suited his persona. He also told me that he had given up cricket and tennis because they were "tough" sports.

But one thing was clear. He was totally focused on the sport. Like an Aaj Ka Arjun , he could see nothing but the bull's eye. Apart from the physical training, he was shooting seven hours a day. For mental training, he said, he would just close his eyes and visualize himself shooting.

And to be able to shoot good enough to win an Olympic gold would require the finest alignment of mind, eye and finger.

Karachi: Even as the PCB waits for a response from New Zealand Cricket on their plans of touring Pakistan later this month, national cricket coach Geoff Lawson says he would like to see the Kiwis here as it would give his team valuable exposure before next month's champions Trophy.

New Zealand is supposed to tour Pakistan from August 20 where they would play three ODIs before the Champions Trophy and the director cricket operations, Zakir Khan said they were expecting a firm response this week.

"Things are getting a bit difficult for us as we have to sell television rights for the series and make other logistical arrangements, " he said.

Although, sources in the board say the tour is unlikely Lawson said he would like to see the New Zealanders tour Pakistan as otherwise it might affect Pakistan's preparation for the Champions Trophy.

"I hope they come because I have kept on saying it is safe to play in Pakistan. But even if they don't come there is nothing anyone can do and we will just have to go into the Champions Trophy with our own preparations, " Lawson said.

Lawson said his players needed to play some competitive games before the Champions Trophy as every other nation was busy in engagements at the moment and would reach Pakistan for the tournament well prepared.

New Delhi: Cricket Australia believes that China has the capability of becoming a cricket power to rival India.

According to The Age Cricket Australia is all set to take a leading role in teaching the Chinese to play the game and see the world's most populous nation as a vital frontier in the sport's expansion plans. And Twenty20 is seen as the best way of getting the Chinese hooked on it.

The Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland and chairman Creagh O'Connor will visit Beijing during the second week of the Games, but the board's manager of global development, Ross Turner, began working with the Chinese through the Asian Cricket Council in 2005.

"With its population of 1.3 billion people and its changing economy, China can one day be a cricket power to rival India," Turner was quated as saying by the newspaper.

"It may not be in five years, but it will certainly be within a decade. China has such a strategic approach to everything. They won't be benchmarking against some atoll in the Pacific, they will be saying what is the world standard and trying to better it, seeking prominence and world recognition. "

Meanwhile, a leading corporate and commercial lawyer Ian McCubbin, an expert in Chinese-Australian affairs, believes that the aftermath of the Olympics will present a crucial opportunity to capitalise on the Communist country's widening interest in western sports.

"I don't think the success of cricket in China depends on having hundreds of thousands of people playing it in the park on a Saturday afternoon. I think it depends on promoting it as a television product," said McCubbin, who is also a legal adviser to China Central Television Network.

"Look at India, and the commercialisation of cricket there. There is no reason why that can't happen in China. It's a growing economy, it's a changing economy, but it's also an economy that is becoming an avid consumer of western culture," McCubbin said.

In fact, Guangzhou will host the 2010 Asian Games, where China will compete in cricket and for which two cricket grounds conforming to ICC standards will be built.

Mumbai: West Indies' batting great Brian Lara named his daughter 'Sydney' because he scored his first Test century, a majestic 277, at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) which Aussie cricket lovers fondly call 'Sachin Cricket Ground'.

It may be a coincidence that the third and final Test of the ongoing three-match series between India and Sri Lanka is being played at the P. Sara Stadium in Colombo and the name of Sachin Tendulkar's daughter is Sara, too. However, naming his daughter had nothing to do with the ground.

Tendulkar who needed 97 runs at the beginning of the match to surpass Lara's record of most Test runs, was dismissed for six in the first innings.

"After losing his wicket to rookie fast bowler Prasad leg before on Friday, he sat in the dressing room for a while, apparently disturbed.. But he came back to his normal mood after listening to music," a member of the Indian team said from Colombo. "He was confident of setting a high score in this match but...," the source added.

"Sachin then called Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma in the dressing room and all three started practising in the dressing room itself.

"The batting maestro is determined to break the record in the second innings and perhaps the day is not far off," the source added

    Indian Cricket League

ICL to begin on October 10

Kapil Dev: 'If we can replicate what happened last season, I would say we are doing well'

The next phase of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) will start on October 10, Kapil Dev, the chairman of the ICL executive board, has said. The number of teams and the venue of the tournament, which will be held days after the BCCI-backed Champions Twenty20 League ends and during Australia's of India, are yet to be decided.

The ICL has yet to find backing among the national cricket boards around the world but its status has become a contentious point among the ICC members. England allowed ICL players to play in the County Championship and therefore Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman and a major force behind the Champions League, ruled out Kent's participation in the tournament because they had fielded ICL players Azhar Mahmood and Justin Kemp.

Kapil hoped the current deadlock would be broken for the betterment of the game. "We are giving jobs to people - to scorers, to administrators, to groundsmen - and more chances to young players. If anyone can convince me of doing something wrong and against the country, I will quit the ICL right away," he said. "The door should be open to everybody. If players like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar emerge from the league, don't they deserve to play for the country?"

It was a sentiment shared by Steve Rixon, the former New Zealand coach currently in charge of one ICL team, the Hyderabad Heroes. "The IPL is an event. Ours has a bit more substance - more emphasis on our kids, on the local Indian players performing well and being as good as they can be and getting ready for the greater challenges. In our Hyderabad team, five Man-of-Match awards last season were bagged by Indian players. The ICL is promoting domestic talent more than the IPL. We started first and I guess we had the first crack at the best of the young talent in this country."

The existing situation, Rixon said, was "hypocritical" and hoped for recognition and an amicable settlement with the ICC. "There is a bit of hypocrisy. Sachin Tendulkar played in Lashings with an ICL player [Dinesh Mongia]. Will the BCCI ban Tendulkar? It's time to sit down and have a rethink. You can't be hypocritical and say the players can play in English leagues but they can't do it here. And you can't ban ICL players from playing in the counties and leagues."

However, he was hopeful of a peaceful closure. "I still believe that at some stage the ICL will be recognised, and it would be in the best interests of all the young cricketers. They have to be ready when it happens and part of my job is to ensure that. Everyone would like to play in the Ranji Trophy again, especially the longer version."

The October tournament will be the first since the hugely successful debut IPL season, but Rixon didn't believe the ICL would suffer by comparison. "It is only going to get bigger," he said. "More people are getting exposed to the game and I think they will say, 'I have seen IPL, let's see how ICL respond'."

"The players' motivation has only got stronger. They know, if they don't perform here and if they are dropped, they can't go back to play under the BCCI. You can be rest assured that ICL performances are going to get even better this season."

Both Kapil and Rixon believed that the quality of cricket would eventually judge the success or failure of ICL. "If we can replicate what happened last season, I would say we are doing well," said Kapil. "If the cricket is interesting and of good quality, the ICL would be a success."

As players from around the world backed former Australia wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist's call for Twenty20 cricket to become an Olympic sport, officials said it would take another 12 years at least for it to get on the Games roster.

But a spokesman for the International Cricket Council, the global governing body, said that if cricket decided it was intent on pursuing Olympic ambitions, then "Twenty20 cricket in 2020 does have a certain ring to it".

Cricket was part of the Olympics just once, in 1900, but last year it was again recognised as an Olympic sport -- the first step towards full admission.

"Our strategic objective was to obtain IOC recognition for the benefit of our members," the ICC spokesman also told AFP.

"We achieved this at the first time of asking in December 2007.. Now that we are in a position to compete for a spot on the Olympic programme, it's only right that we now look at whether cricket and the Olympic Games would benefit from being reunited."

Gilchrist, in his column for Indian daily the Deccan Chronicle, said Monday: "It doesn't matter where the 2020 Olympic Games are held but many of us who've experienced international Twenty20 cricket and the IPL (Indian Premier League) are convinced that cricket should bid to become an Olympic sport in time for the Games."

And Gilchrist insisted that for all the prizes on offer in cricket, players would still be motivated to compete at an Olympics.

"Take it from someone who has won almost everything cricket has to offer -- the Olympics is the absolute pinnacle in sport.

"Cricketers won't care about the money. The chance to stand on top of the Olympic

podium, to wear an Olympic gold medal and the pride of belting out your national anthem would be a life-changing money-can't-buy experience," he said.

Cricket is far from alone in considering becoming an Olympic sport, with golf also pondering a place at the Games.

But reigning US Masters champion Trevor Immelman said: "I don't think golf should be an Olympic sport. To me the Olympics were founded on amateur sport. Guys go in there and train for four years putting their whole lives on the line to win a gold medal."

However, his fellow South African Graeme Smith, captain of the Proteas cricket team, that has just won a Test series in England, was enthusiatic about cricket being played at the Olympics.

"From a player's perspective it would obviously be a fantastic thing to be part of an Olympic Games," said Smith. "We've always just watched from the side and seen how special the event is."

The programme for the 2012 London Olympics has already been determined and with a decision on the schedule for the 2016 Games expected next year, that may be too soon for cricket.

International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge, who played cricket during summer vacations in England in his youth, met with ICC officials in Lausanne last year.

    Asif's sample B test on August 18

Karachi: The Indian Premier League has extended the date for the 'B' sample test for Pakistani pacer Mohammad Asif to August 18.

Shahid Karim, lawyer for Asif confirmed they had received an e-mail from the IPL accepting their request for the extension of the date.

This is for the second time that the IPL has accepted a request from Asif to extend the date for his 'B' sample test after it was originally scheduled for July 28 and then changed to August 6.

Asif has been suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board after he tested positive in dope tests conducted by the IPL during its inaugural edition in India.

Asif asked for his 'B' after failing the dope test but has so far been unable to secure visas to travel to Geneva, Switzerland where the test would be conducted.

Karim said he was hopeful that they would now get visas by Friday.

"From the word go I have said the tests should be held in mid August as it will give us appropriate time to prepare our case and travel to Switzerland," Karim said.

"The Swiss embassy conducted Asif's interview on Monday and have agreed to issue the visa so that is a big burden off us as we want to be present for the 'B' sample tests that is our right," he said.
