HI Neelam
I think apart from changing habit i.e. remembering to carry a bag while going
to shop and having alternative jute bags that can be taken after paying a
deposit.
I feel that if the shop keeper charges a good amount of money for giving a
plastic bag, the usage will decrease automatically in a majority of sections of
society. The price of plastic bag that is sold to the retailer should include a
hefty tax which is levied as a pollution tax (the money should to used for the
same).
So in return the retailer will not give the bag generously to the customer,
rather will ask for a price.
The user will try to reuse/ look for alternatives.
Few years ago all cities had small cottage industries, where bags out of old
newspaper were made. At that time the bags used to cost 1-2paisa. That used to
be bread earning task for a lot of families. If that could be revived as an
alternative at small scale in all small and big cities and a subsidy given to
such products, we will go back to using eco-friendly material more.
I think plastic is a wonderful material and plastic bag is an amazing example
of an efficient product that uses so less material and works efficiently. It is
just that we need to use it intelligently so that our future generations can
live in a cleaner world in years to come.

Subject: [designindia] alternate to plastic bags
Hi guys, a small issue that needs 5 minutes of thinking from any who
have the time...
Children of aditi,( students council) having meeting with yelahanka
town council , ( bangalore) next weekend, to try to reduce use of
plastic bags in the area, also having meeting with various high
powered parents to get them to sponsor production of reusable
replacement bags( to reduce using plastic bags given by groceries.) .
The companies these parents work in will sponsor these bags, will get
their logo's on the bags.
Now can anyone think of exciting low cost features in these
replacement reusable bags, that will make people want to use them,
rather than use plastic bags that the neighbourhood grocer thrusts on
them?
common problems
I always forget to take this bag when i go shopping,
solution-scrunch it up and put it in a small zip bag, on my keychain,
always keep some in the car /scooter boot.
make sure u put them back in the boot so they r available the next
time u just drop by at the grocers on the way home from work.
Any others common problems /mental blocks/ solutions,( either of the
3 will do, all 3 not reqd)
the scrunched up bag on the keychain, was used in cyprus, when they
made the island plastic bag free.
