New coins test National Institute of Design's mettle

Vinod Mathew

Ahmedabad , March 12

GET ready India, the new Rs 10 and Rs 5 coins will put the country on par with our European brethren as they will be a bimetallic fusion of alloys with gold and silver finish. The 50-paise, Re 1 and Rs 2 coins would use a single metal, while the Rs 5 and Rs 10 coins would have an outer ring of a second metal, giving it a golden sheen, like the euro.

The prototypes of these five denominationswill be rolled out of the Mumbai Mint any time now. The Ministry of Finance has cleared the payment of the Rs 9-lakh assignment fee to the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. Business Line caught up with the man who crafted the identities of the BrahMos missile on the one hand and institutes such as IIM, Indore, on the other.

The graphic designer, Prof Anil Sinha, senior designer and Faculty of Communications Design at NID, admits that his team has bettered all previous efforts as these coins are expected to serve the country till 2015-20.

The NID team also included the product designer, Mr Sahil Karkhanis, three students signed on as research associates and ergonomist Dr Subir Das. "From day one, when a General Manager of the Hyderabad mint came calling at the NID to brief us, it has been a competitive assignment. Perhaps, a touch of complexity came up in the form of our client profile as there were three entities - Ministry of Finance (policy and approvals); Reserve Bank of India (paymaster) and the Government mints (manufacturer). The initial proposal was to design even 10 paise and 25 paise denominations but soon enough, it was decided more coins were something people could do without," Prof Sinha said.

The brief required them to consider four factors - the human element (usability), production requirements for the mints, metallurgy, and the graphic elements of an all-new look. At a presentation on August 19 at the Mumbai Mint, eight themes were short-listed. These were Unity in Diversity, Grooves, Information Technology, Science and Space Technology, Defence and Aviation, Mudra, Headgears and the Tactile factor. The July-October period also saw another 10 sets of designs being developed at the NID for the circular shape, decided upon largely to suit the requirement of vending machines.

"The key areas that we were required to work on were shape, size and weight of the coins. There was a perception that the Re1 and Rs 2 coins were too similar for comfort just as the Rs 5 coin was easy to counterfeit, often by sticking together two 50-paise coins. There was also the issue of portability as the Rs 5 coins were often seen bulging out of wallets," the product designer, Mr Karkhanis, said.

The final presentation on December 12 at the Mumbai Mint saw some bulk users of coins such as MTNL, BEST, Central and Western Railways, Maharashtra Road Transport and Greater Mumbai Milk Scheme approve the new set of coins. Themes given the final nod were Unity in Diversity, Grooves, Mudra and the Tactile factor, though all the short-listed themes are the client's property, Prof Sinha said.

Now that the coins are ready for production, it is all up to the speed with which the India Government Mints can roll out the first two sets of coins from the Mumbai Mint as per a Ministry of Finance directive. Henceforth, there will be a perceptible difference between the Re 1 and Rs 2 coins. The Rs 5 coin is lighter - it now weighs 6 gm instead of the earlier 9 gm. The Rs 10 coin will weigh 8 gm. While all the coins have been allocated space, both for thematic graphics and commemorative purposes, the end word is that even the blind should be able to recognise the different denominations. Surely, `feel-good factor' will take on a different meaning in the days to come, as far as money in the wallet is concerned.

Hi Umesh! This is Bagchi here. We make TV commercial ,I can give you the info that you are looking for.

Budget of a 30 sec commercial is dependent on how difficult and complex the production is. It can ranges from 18 Lakhs to 45 Lakhs.

We have done some projects of Louie( a mosquito character for Mortein), which is live action-animation( animation done in KL) was a 40 sec commercial. The Budget was around fifty Lakhs.

The kind of animated stuff that floats around it looks like it must be around 15 to 16 percent of the total commercials produced in a year.

I would not know the budget for broadcast graphics. If you want any more specific information you can write to me in this e mail id : shantanu@...

Subject:: Unique Design Interventions and Initiatives by NID
koshy@...

Dear All,

NID was identified by UNDP through KVIC in the year 2000 to carry out impactful Design Interventions in the Khadi & Village Industries sector. The Objectives of these design interventions by NID in select KVI Institutions were simple as listed below:

o              Preservation of traditional skills

o              To prevent migration of rural artisans to urban areas

o              Reduction in dependence on subsidy culture and relying more on performance culture

Thus, a need was felt to “formalize” the contribution of NID to the Khadi & Village Industries sector both by KVIC & UNDP. This led to signing of an MOU between NID& KVIC on October 6th, 2001 under which a KVIC Cell commenced at NID campus, which has been working towards the needs of the KVI sector in close coordination with KVIC.

NID successfully carried out design intervention projects in those Institutions as jointly identified by KVIC and NID thereby fulfilling the above objectives over the last 3 years. This led to a sense of confidence and buoyancy both within UNDP and KVIC as regards the commitment and capability of NID to make contribution towards enabling the Institutions (and ! thereby the artisans) of Khadi & Village Industries sector to be self-sufficient.

KVIC identified a number of Khadi Units in Gujarat & Maharashtra on the basis of :

              Willingness to Change.

              Performance Capacity.

Activities undertaken in the past for Product Development.

              Proximity to Ahmedabad.

A total of ten Institutions were selected by KVIC based on the above criteria. NID had proposed relevant “Design Intervention” projects to be implemented for these Institutions, which were supposed to be funded by UNDP.

The strategy (to be) adopted by NID in these project proposals entailed the following:

              Survey of existing scenario.

      &n! bsp;       SWOT Analysis.

              Design Development.

Training for capacity building / skill enhancement.

           !    Organizing Buyer-Seller Meet.

Further, the emphasis was not only to develop design, but in hand holding the Institutions to attain the capability of entering the markets

NID successfully carried out design intervention projects in those Institutions as selected by KVIC thereby fulfilling the above objectives. To give a few examples, the following Institutions ! benefited considerably through NID’s Design Intervention Projects:

Shri Bhal Nalkantha Khadi Gramodyog Mandal, Ranpur.

(Natural Dyeing in wool)

Gandhi Smriti, Bhavnagar.

(Children-wear from Khadi Fabric)

UDYOG BHARTI, Gondal

(High fashion embroidered ready-to-wear garments).

Over and above successful Design Interventions, NID also contributed in the following areas:

·               Conducted capacity-building and design-sensitisation workshops for artisans of Institutions and KVIC staff respectively. Also conducted technical trainings at Institutions alo! ngwith KVIC staff.

·               Acted as Design Consultant for KVIC & designed the KHADI logo, Diaries & Calendar for KVIC.

All of the above led to a resurgence of Khadi sector the commitment and ca! pability of NID to make contribution towards enabling the Institutions (and thereby the artisans) of Khadi & Village Industries sector was appreciated by all concerned. The new Khadi logo was designed by Shri S M Shah, Principal designer at NID.

In November 2001, KVIC launched a national level design-intervention-financial-assistance scheme -- PRODIP (Product Development Design Intervention & Packaging) -- for its Institutions, the monitoring role for which was assigned to NID. In the first year of its operation over 50 projects exceeding a total amount of Rs. 1 Crore were sanctioned.

The institute is planning to! set up design studios in KVIC, where it will train designers and advise them on implementation of ideas. Now, the role of NID has been redefined to a nodal institution along with KVIC to turn around khadi. Both NID and KVIC will be working together to sell the khadi brand. NID will support by training designer in each zone. NID will provide expertise to those employees of the zone. In the first MOU, the KVIC wanted NID to turn around the khadi segment and also market the fabric to youth as fashionable apparel, now NID will work from within KVIC to give the required thrust in marketing.

Few visuals of NID’s design interventions in this sector are also attached.

Dear All,

In the context of rapid changes in the design education in India and overseas and the far reaching changes in technology, emergence of service sector etc. the pressing need for systematising the design education and implementing a system for strengthening Excellence of Education System while retaining unique values and time tested processes at NID ha! s become clear.  Attached is a background note related to the roadmap of SEED, which describes the development and progress of collaboration between the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad (NID) and Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) at the University of Central England in Birmingham UK (UCE), and summarises the plan of action for strengthening educational excellence at NID launched this year from
1st January 2004.

Your opinions, feedback will be very helpful for successful implementation of the ! SEED, a system for educational excellence of NID, by NID, for NID.

Yours,

S B Naidu (Chanda)
Acting Superintendent (PR)

NID-SEED (System for Educational Excellence in Design) –
An Initiative for Educational Excellence in Design: From January 2004 to 2006

Background

In the recent years, management and faculty from the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad and from the University of Central England, Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) have been exchanging visits with the intention of establishing a base and agenda for collaborative activities.

The central aim of design education is to improve the general quality of everyone’s lives by enabling students to acquire, develop and apply professional standards of knowledge, skills and experience as designers. Institutions have the public responsibility of setting standards and promoting quality in teaching and learning. The institutions concerned with design education need systems that not only suit their ways of teaching and learning but also show that design education constitutes a high level discipline of teaching and learning.

NID and BIAD have much in common. The faculty at both organisations comprises professionals who are highly regarded in their own creative fields and enjoy long track records of personal achievement in research and consultancy. Both NID and BIAD provide programmes of study that are recognised nationally and internationally for their quality of products. The organisations share the conviction that creative design not only constitutes a major means of improving the quality of life but also forms an increasingly vital agent in national economic growth. However, they are both aware that quality in design education cannot be taken for granted, and that standards need to be systematically maintained and reviewed in the light of educational and economic change.

The Shared Need for Quality Assurance (QA) Systems   In national UK terms, quality assurance has two key aspects: the standards expected and how they are maintained. Quality is defined as “effectiveness of learning opportunities in the process of enabling students to achieve awards. A system for ensuring quality needs comprehensive data, reliable feedback and responsible reporting mechanism on which to base judgments and action. The quality assurance system is reflexive, interrelated and continuously cyclic in form. The programme specifications in the student handbook form the base for delivery of teaching and opportunities for learning monitored according to compliance with intuitional regulations and identifying any action required to maintain and enhance quality in order to enable students to achieve awards accordingly standards set in programme specifications and so on. Measures of success in this cycle include: levels of resourcing, teaching and support available to students, rates of retention, progression an achievement amongst students, responses from faculty and students, consistency and effectiveness of monitoring by faculty.

Contacts between NID and BIAD   Formal contact has taken place at the highest level between Shri Hasmukh Shah, Chairman, Governing Council, and Dr. Darlie O Koshy, Executive Director for NID, and UCE Pro-Vice Chancellor Academic, Prof Phil Walking, and the Dean of BIAD, Professor Mick Durman and also with Prof. Aftabh Gharda, Prof. Tom Jones & Prof. Bob Jerrad for finalising collaborative exchanges and partnership programmes. In 2002, NID and BIAD signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide a base for more pro-active collaboration for a period of 3 years. The British Council played a role in assisting the process.

Support from the British Council in India   The British Council in India (BC) has acted as a catalyst for collaboration between NID and BIAD. Following informal discussions with both parties, BC representatives participated in a three-way meeting in November 2003 at NID. It was resolved that a workshop would be held at NID IN February 2004 to draw up a roadmap for the collaborative evolution of a QA system at NID that would enhance, extend and strengthen existing procedures. Both NID and BIAD welcome the support of BC and the resulting dialogue for action is fast becoming a model of good collaborative practice.

The Preparatory Workshop

To enhance and develop quality assurance at NID, an intensive three-day workshop
(February 8-10, 2004) involved in-depth discussions with the faculty, discipline coordinators and students at NID. Feedback from these was reviewed through discussion between
Dr. Darlie Koshy and Dr. Tom Jones and collated by the Education Panel in discussion with
Dr. Jones. The workshop was notably successful in that it enabled people at NID to become familiar with the basic concept of a QA system, clarified a number of misunderstandings, introduced Dr. Jones to faculty and students, and produced a clear way forward.

The broad purpose of the workshop was to draw up a 2 year action plan or, using Dr Koshy’s idea, a road map for sharing BIAD experience of establishing a quality assurance system suitable for teaching and learning in design with NID while preserving what is unique to NID. While important differences in the circumstances and histories of the two institutions will need to be fully recognised, their shared concern with quality in the teaching and learning of design forms the starting point for the workshop.

The Roadmap, drawn up and decided as a result of the Workshop, forms a planned sequence of collaborative activity leading to completion and simultaneously implementation of the SEED document by April 2006.

It will produce a comprehensive document called “The Road Map for a System of Educational Excellence in Design”. The two year task would take the form of action research, that is systematically monitoring the usefulness and testing the viability of a series of planned and agreed changes in existing practice. By the end of two years, NID will have both, a suitably developed, high level quality assurance system tested in action and a document detailing this system entitled SEED – A System for Educational Excellence in Design.

Two Year Roadmap for production of SEED – A System for Educational Excellence in Design

The basic concept is that NID, mentored by BIAD represented Dr. Jones and owned by the NID faculty team of NID would embark on an action research programme of planned modifications and amendments to its current operations – in technical action research terms, these would be called ‘interventions in practice’. This means the resulting QA system, whilst being designed by NID for NID, would be sufficiently tried and tested for it to become a blueprint for other design institutions in India especially in the context of the move for spread of Design Education in the country in the context of the need for ramping up the number professional designers in the country.

The schedule commences with Phase 1 in relation to the undergraduate programmes. During Phase 2 and 3, the effectiveness of these standards will be monitored through extending the role of existing NID committees and panels to form a QA system. The system, by then already tested, will be introduced, monitored and reviewed at periodic level in Phase 2 during 2004/5. In 2005/6, further testing of the total undergraduate and postgraduate system and fine-tuning will be systematically carried out during Phase 3.

Hi all,

I am puzzled. I am involved in the Design Business Incubator project set up
recently by NID and surprise- surprise! After all the emails about how DBI
needs to work with only NID designers- out of 80 proposals- there was hardly
one/two NID entries and that too one of them was by a student who has still
not graduated! (Prashant, please correct me if I am wrong)

C’mon guys whatever happened to good ideas? Don’t you have something you
want to develop, have dreamt of developing and wished that you had the
backing for it? Wished that you had NID infrastructure, a library like NID
and a potential VC to back you? I certainly wish I had something like this
when I set up my first business venture.

I raised the issue with DBI members and they are as puzzled as I am. Perhaps
you don’t really know the details, but at the risk of repeating to some:

1. The DBI offers key NID facilities- Library, W Shops, Internet and
Communications, access to academic experts on various topics.
2. Opportunities to interact with the big VCs from day 1- and potentially
get their funding (I know how tough it is to get them to even listen to you
on your own)
3. Leveraging your ideas with potential Industry partners
4. Apart from VCs (ICICI, Sidbi, Gujarat Finance), The DBI board has high
quality professionals- like Priti Vyas Gianetti, entrepreuners who are also
board members of NID governing council, IIMA professors- who will provide
guidance to incubatees.
5. DBI is headed by an IIMA graduate and other positions are yet to be
filled in.

And all this is available at a nominal monthly cost- where NID is not making
any money. Any experienced entrepreneur will tell you how cost intensive and
difficult it is to set up your own business. The heartaches are many and
rewards are few, in the initial years. A little bit of backing goes a long
way, when your business is at seed stage.

I would strongly encourage anyone out there, who wants to start a design
business/ has a great idea to take forward- please apply! You can send your
proposal to:

Prashant Kutaula, COO- DBI,NID
His email id: info@...

Cheers,
Shibani

Dear Friends-Alumni

This is 2004, the 25th year since first batch witnessed the speech of SMT Pupul Jaykar at first convocation 1978-79. We were less than 35 no including PG student  from  first 3years batch( 1970-71-72) who could make it to received our Diploma ,went out with haze what.. Next..?

It took more than 30 faculty members to produce, rather crafted us to turn us in to Designers in 6 to 7 years.

We form a small office and started NID Alumni Association (NIDAA)

Ever since on and off we keep blinking, doing whatever members brought forward, along with the rough and tough Design profession made them sweat to establish their offices. Some survived, some established, - some dropped down, - some migrated to overseas,-some struggled, - some flourished- some happily married, -sadly few divorced.

But none forgot the sad and happy moments shared together at NID.

None forgot the golden time they spent with friends and of course the faculty.

Whatever we are today, our Bread and Butter- Computers and Mobile phone- Motor or Cycle- Office or Home, it is all there to share the credit what you did with design or what design did for you.

At the junction of 25 the year we at Ahmedabad are planning to design an Event to come back to those moments. The details are yet to be worked out, any body there to respond?

Now having enlarged designer’s population more than 1000 Alumni, I am sure time has come to discharge our emotions, obligation and duties towards Friends-Alumni-NID campus to our Gurus to an Institute.

The formal election of office bearers are to be announce soon .we the present care taking committee is stepping down to make way for younger and eligible Alumni to take over to continue the official business of NIDAA.

Kindly Participate and come forward to share your concern, by making NIDAA the platform to express.

Regards.
