Hi,

Businessworld does care to reply to what is your concerns.

1. The Fee - we do not think it is high.It does not even begin to come anywhere near the cost Businessworld is incurring to establish Design. All of you know better then i do how difficult it is to get 'sponsorship's as suggested by somebody.

2. Recognition/ gains to businessworld. One cover of BW which takes almost six months of organising resources in terms of manpower and hard to come by monies. Is anybody ready to underwrite the costs for us so that we dont have to worry about them.....

3. Getting a jury who has the time to screen/ evaluate the enteries impartially and over a period of time. And then come to India - offer their time to judge. All cost borne by Businessworld.

4. On entries: Serious enteries from designers who are sure of their design capailities. Designers who are not afraid  want to pit themselves against the best. Designers who want to participate to make the awards what we are attempting to make them. World Class. Its easy to send in entries when there is no fee.... we want each designer to send in what they think is their best.

There are enough design awards already happening which do not charge any fee.

5. Publicity to the winner. I would never ever deny them that. It is too hard won after years of struggle. I hope each designer and every winner gains much more from winning.

Some of you attended the awards nite, we are trying establish indian design and designers, we did not know there was so much resentment.

One of the critics, Mukul Goyal has gained considerably from his association with Businessworld in the past, maybe he should not associate himself as an individual with us since he clearly resents the fee and publicity that winners are getting.

thanks

gina

Project Particulars

The Organization works in:

CKS is the first Interaction Design and Usability practice in India that works with Technology Houses and other institutions in designing Information and communication technologies (ICTs) for non-traditional user communities.

With its head office in Bangalore and a New Delhi office opening shortly, CKS draws its staff from leading international ICT, Design, Media, and Communication Schools.

CKS clients include HP Labs, Mobile Phone Companies, EDC, World Resources Institute, UNICEF, and USAID.

The area of:

CKS’ areas of interest are tripartite by nature –

A. CKS provides design and usability research services, which allow technology houses to better understand the needs and preferences of non-traditional users. Through such ethnographies of "situations of use", new products and services for rural markets can be conceptualized and developed.

B. CKS has an abiding interest in knowledge generation and dissemination in the field of design. Hence our partnership with the renowned Doors of Perception Foundation, based in Amsterdam. CKS and Doors organized Doors East, a sister conference to Doors in December 2003. The first Doors East was held in NID Ahmedabad in 2001. CKS and Doors will be organizing Doors 8 in New Delhi in March 2005. CKS also participates in various design and media events across the world, and has published works to its credit.

More on Doors can be found at http://www.doorsofperception.com/

More on Doors East can be found at http://www.doorseast.com/

C. CKS consistently explores the intersections between technology, art and society. We have the CKS Gallery and Commons in Bangalore, and soon to be replicated in Delhi which explores concepts and interventions in this area.

The CKS Gallery collects and curates new Information and Design work. Telexhibitions allow designers, practitioners and artists to share their work with South Asian audiences. This year the Gallery will focus on Information and Communications Technology products and media created in South Asia in the 20th Century. Upcoming events include Network City by Urban Spheres and a new installation by Natalie Jeremijenko. The CKS Commons provides an open space for discussion and dialogue on the role of technology in art, culture and society.

I agree mukul,

the awards need not be so expensive, it is understandable to have
some entry fee, but awards need to be supported by industry
sponsors. Infact it is not difficult to have the awards sponsored,
what it could mean is that then the awards would be called xyz
design awards and BW and NID will have to be credited for organising
them.... (branding issues). But i guess all this discussion on
awards is too late..and people responsible dont seem to care enough
to reply...thats india's generic problem...most of our day today
problems wouldnt be there if the responsible people listen. so lets
not waste breath on this..its take it or leave it anyway.

I am posting "Design for Asia" awards from Honkong Design Center on
this group. They are very keen to promote these awards in India.
These are open to international designs launched in India. So keen
that Tony Sim from Hong Design Center would be visiting India from
4th to 9th of august. He is keen to meet groups in Bombay, Delhi,
Bangalore. These are FREE and based on nominations. Must note the
categories..very clear and precise...so is the judging..very
transparent...Do check this out. I am putting it in files folder on
group site..and if u can not download..send me a mail on my
elephantdesign.com id.

Just an Idea- How about Nidesign egroup awards....based on design
for asia awards....

One Issue on the BW Awards, which i assume i am the only one feeling this........
WHY IS THE PARTICIPATION FEES SO HIGH ??? To discourage people ?? Sudhir the other day was raising an issue of Non Particpation ......... i am sure this is one of them. Not that there should not be any, but do we have to pay to get awards, or rather the Organisers find ways of Funding to Honour good designers/design. I find it strange that we pay a hefty fees to participate, whereas the Glory goes to BW, NID and just a handful of winners ?????

Hi all

For those of you who were not there at Showcase design on 25th, we formally kicked off the party preparations.
I request to please pass on this mail to all those who are not on the Delhi Alumni's list but are in Delhi
Please look at the end of this mail for things to do, and contact us wherever you can lend a hand!

The collections have started, and the ball is rolling!

We intend to create a bash which is fun and friendship, and also good networking

This is our event, where we meet up with old friends, catch up  with the gossip, talk some design and business,
and basically have a good time.

This time the event is open to all NIDans and any friends they would like to get along. The entry fee is fixed at Rs.300 per adult, and Rs.100 for kids below or 15 years of age.
You can please contact me for your contributions or collect money from your friends and direct that to me.
All excess monies ( if and when) will goto the Delhi alumni corpus being maintained by Lolita and Bala.

The venue is not fixed but as options we are looking at-
  • Last year's venue - Panchsheel park, thanks to Renuka who was the source of the venue last year
  • IIC- Chandrashekhar (Chandu) is going to figure out abt  India International Centre . He says its a great place with great food.
  • Airport club (near safdarjung airport)- Mukul's has recommended this and will be finding more abt it.
Do contribute with contacts or club memberships in the above mentioned venues, or if you have a better idea.

We are also looking at a sponsor's post, where we will give ad space to NID gradutes or associated companies to put up a banner of their company. The sum is to be finalised but suggested contribution is Rs 2500 for a 2.5' x 6' space on the board which would be 6' by 10'. We can put 2 boards if lots of people want to put up names.

This is really good for design companies, and also other companies who want to advertise with designers.

Things to do-
Come and make others come (no pun). The more the merrier! Collect money from people u know and pass on to Isha
Venue (see main mail)
Food (prob comes along with venue)
Children's entertainment
DJ and music
tents etc
Anything else?

Happiness!
Manish

The Next Big Draw for India
The computer-savvy subcontinent is moving into a new field: digital
animation

   By Arvind Adiga in Bombay
   Time / 12 July 2004
   http://www.time.com/time/asia/magazine/article/0,13673,501040712-
660982,00.html

Sachin Garud, a 28-year-old computer animator, spends a good part of
his day staring at a screen while trying to get a cartoon bull named
Ferny to talk. Although the operation is entirely digital, the work
is nonetheless laborious. Garud, who is employed by a Bombay studio
called Crest Communication, has to manipulate Ferny's lip movements
to match the words the character speaks in Jakers! The Adventures of
Piggley Winks, an Emmy Award-nominated cartoon serial on America's
PBS network. While Garud handles Ferny's lip-synching, a colleague is
in charge of the movements of other taurine body parts; another is
making one of Ferny's friends, a sheep named Wiley, come to life. The
work might be time consuming and repetitive, but Garud insists that
it has its little pleasures. "It's a lot of fun getting Ferny to
sing," he says.

Animators like Garud typically earn salaries ranging from $3,500 to
$30,000 a year, much less than the $40,000 to $100,000 they'd pocket
if they worked in the U.S. But no one at Crest is complaining.
India's animators have never had it so good. In what could be the
country's next outsourcing boom, a growing number of American
companies are looking to India as a place where they can get high-
quality computer-generated animation done on the cheap. Orders for
cartoon serials, computer games, direct-to-home DVDs and
demonstration videos are pouring into India; at least nine cartoon
serials aimed at the American and European markets are in
production. "The amount of work coming into India is phenomenal,"
says Rajiv Sangari, director of the animation unit at Padmalaya
Telefilms, which recently signed a $14 million deal with Mondo TV, an
Italian company, to produce more than a hundred episodes of an
animated TV series.

Although India's tech companies and call centers could sell $12
billion worth of software and services to foreigners this year,
insiders estimate that the animation industry makes only about $150
million in annual revenues. But executives expect sales to at least
double this year and to keep growing exponentially. Animation studios
are sprouting throughout India there are at least 70 already in
operation and companies are on a hiring spree. Sangari, for example,
says Padmalaya Telefilms currently has 160 animators but aims to
increase staff to 400 within a month. Even that won't be enough, so
he's planning to fly in 25 animators from the Philippines to help
out.

American TV and film companies have been outsourcing animation work
to South Korea and the Philippines for more than a decade, but India
has managed to muscle into the business, thanks to technological
advances and shifting American tastes. Although many animated films
and TV programs still use traditional animation, which begins with
hand-sketched images on paper, the success of movies such as Shrek
and Toy Story has meant that films and TV serials are increasingly
being digitally animated, produced entirely on computers using 3-D
graphics. That's a boon for India, with its expertise in software and
computer skills. While creative control is retained in the U.S. a
team of American master animators comes up with the look of each
character, and scriptwriters determine the plots and dialogue the
task of creating each episode is outsourced to Indian animators,
allowing the American company to lower its costs by up to 50%. A
typical half-hour 3-D cartoon episode can cost $70,000 to $100,000 to
produce in India compared with $170,000 to $250,000 in the U.S.

The economics are compelling, but it's still been difficult for
India's animators to gain the acceptance of clients who don't think
of India as an animation center. A.K. Madhavan, Crest's CEO, recalls
fruitless sales trips he made to the U.S. in 1999 and 2000. "Had we
known how tough it would be to get a breakthrough," Madhavan admits
in retrospect, "we might not have kept going." Persistence and a
little good fortune helped Madhavan get his big break. While in Texas
in 2001, he met with an independent animation producer named Mike
Young, who happens to share Madhavan's passion for cricket. The two
bonded and Young agreed to watch a test animation clip done by Crest.
He liked what he saw and gave Crest the order for the Jakers! show.
Currently, the studio has contracts to animate three serials destined
for American TV.

It helps that the stigma once associated with "made-in-India" goods
and services is evaporating, thanks to the success of software
outsourcing giants such as Infosys and Wipro. "Earlier, you had to
spend most of your time selling India and a little time selling your
company," says Biren Ghose, CEO of Bombay-based Animation
Bridge. "Now, I don't have to sell India. I can start selling my
company straight away." Because of globalization, cultural
differences that affect production values the look and feel of
programs are rapidly disappearing, too. "Ten years ago, when Bugs
Bunny said, 'What's the hubbub, bub?,' most Indians would not have
got it," says Nilesh Sardesai, creative director at Crest. "But
today, they do," because Indian society has opened to foreign
influences.

The animation boom is cascading throughout India's entertainment
industry. One offshoot has been the rise of computer-game
outsourcing. In the Bangalore offices of Dhruva Interactive, a group
of twentysomethings sit with comic books and programming manuals
while their computer screens flash with images of G.I.s carrying
machine guns, teenagers shooting pool in smoky halls, ogres and
medieval labyrinths. They're developing games that will be sold to
Dhruva clients such as Microsoft. While some Indian animation
companies are looking to expand into computer games, others,
emboldened by the success of Crest, are dreaming of the big money:
digitally animated films. Rajesh Turakhia, CEO of Maya Entertainment,
a Bombay-based studio, says that Indian companies will next target
smaller Hollywood 3-D animation films with budgets of $10 million to
$20 million.

India's ambitions could be thwarted by a shortage of skilled
animators. Experts estimate that India has only about 4,000 animators
who can handle complex projects which is woefully inadequate for all
the work coming in. "We need at least another 2,000 to 3,000
animators this year, but I'm not seeing that many new people in this
business," says Animation Bridge's Ghose. One problem, complains
Rajesh Rao, the CEO of Dhruva Interactive, is that few of India's art
schools and engineering colleges offer computer animation courses.
Another barrier facing the industry is cultural. "The Indian
mentality is that if I have to put my child into a science or
engineering school, I am happy. But we don't want our children to go
into art or culture as a profession," says Padmalaya's Sangari. The
shortage of talent has raised concern that some clients could grow
disillusioned with the quality of work they receive from Indian
animators. "Many in the industry do not know how they will exeute all
these orders," says Sangari.

India may not have much time to adapt. China, Russia and the Ukraine
are rapidly emerging as rivals. One Indian executive laments that he
just lost out on a contract unexpectedly after offering to do the job
at the standard Indian rate of $4,000 per month for each animator; a
Russian competitor undercut him, agreeing to do it for just $1,800
per person. India's schools will have to start churning out thousands
of qualified animators each year before a new generation of Russian
and Chinese animators figures out the fine art of making cartoon
bulls talk.

Hello Chandu,

Please you or anyone else explain in detail what you mean  by " Designer of the year catagory is assesed on the performance of last three years, hence the restricted participation seems justified."

Does this mean that the designer cannot enter any other products that he/she has designed in the 3 last years? ( Only 5 products in the last 3 years are enterd for this category). What if one has designed more products?

In no other design award or any other award - anywher in the world is this kind of a clause put!

Is this a fair competition? I just dont understand the reason for this restriction and wahts more the NID-BW Award commitee also have not given a decent justification.

And whats more I am quite amazed that there has been no response to a mail ( which I have cut and paste below) on this subject! I thought that the yahoo group was also to discuss issues like these!

Would really appreciate a discussion on this.

EDUCATION + WORK EXPERIENCE OVERSEAS
2001-2002 - MA Design Management at the Birmingham Institute of Art
and
Design,(BIAD) UK.
2002-2003 - Design Manager, TaKo Limited, Cheltenham, UK. My job
included
strategy formulation, briefing designers, co-ordinate manufacture and
product sourcing from Taiwan, Malaysia, China and marketing them in
UK.

2002- till present I am doing a PhD in the broad area of Design
Managment
at BIAD, UK. NID has a year back inked a MOU with BIAD and is
wanting to
establish a proper Design Managemtn department with British Quality
Systems in India. Dr. Darlie Koshy, ED of NID is my co-guide for the
PhD
in India.

My PhD partly explores those issues of transferrability of knowledge
as
well as to a large part looks at 'the design and innovation
competence and
knowledge models of Indian Corporations'.

I also teach International Design Managment at various universities
in UK
and well as at NID.

Consultant to the Wonder Group of Taiwan, in the broad areas of brand
developement and global strategy formulation in NPD and design
innovation.

I am currentlu at NID asa research associate and Sethuraman, Ranjan
as
well as Sashank Mehta have suggested I email you to join the group.

I was actually hoping to gather opinions of NID graduates from
different
industry sectors in India and see if there was any trend/pattern in
thinking about Indian Design. I also wanted to get their email IDs
and ask
all of them if they want to take part in a survey by NID.

Soon you will get mailers by post to announce the same.

Thanking you,

Kind regards
Sridhar Ryalie
