Dear all,

Designindia is going great guns and lets keep the flag
high. In the absence of a design body we are networked
better this way. Lets celebrate the group's success
achieved so far and see that we benefit from each
other through this group and in other ways.

As we have memberships consisting of people who have
20 or more years of design experience and also people
who are just into their diploma projects in NID, we
will definitely find mismatch of expectations.

According to me on one side we have the matured
understanding of the scenanrio and the other a more
flamboyant approach both of which are important.
Design as seen through different eyes.

Apart from some personal postings I think it is fair
to discuss anything related to design profession and
practice. If one does not like the mail ignore or
better still delete it.

I only wish we generate an uptodate 'photo' list of
all our members with their details for quick
reference.

Keep writing in.

hi,

I have been in this group for some months now.. and i
am finding it nice.. once that virus mails was a
prob.. but apart from that i feel this is good..

again.. people have their choices.. if someone wants
to leave.. it is upto them, why should the group
discuss that.. i think we should just not discuss
this..

it is good to put some topics of design and art...for
discussion.. ..

Dear Nitin, Bala,Deepankar,

The maruti team has already been removed, so i guess these messages
wont reach them.

Withdrawl of Maruti team raises some questions and i think we should
look at them and debate them.

This group is 4 years old, though bulk of members must have joined
in last 1 and half years. Most of the members are professional
designers, and there are all kinds of designers- various experience
levels, various geographies, various discplines and different kinds
of backgrounds, understanding and tolerances.

Why are we here?
What do we expect from this egroup?
Are discussions as you wanted? or would like to see this egorup as
something else.

or are you here since there is nothing else for designers anyway?

lets discuss this frankly.

Dear All,

It is sad to see the withdrawal of Maruti team especially when
Ramnavmi is round the corner. This is probably the first time the
"Maruti team" is seen retreating from the battle field rather than
providing support.

JSR, It is our job to see that the list does well. Reminds me of a TV
show when the then railway minister George Frenandes was being held
responsible for the garbage and the filth that trains are known for.
He answered that it is responsibility of every user of the railway to
see that the trains and stations are kept clean. What can the ministry
do about it?

I am sure that the list has already provided direct as well as
indirect benefits to a lot of members and it must live long.

BTW The meaning of Sudhir is "resolute, brave" and his son's name is Ram.

Hi Poonam,

This is great news, so we do have a design association in India.

Hi Khyati,

there are a lot of activities being planned for design and different
organisations are working on this end.

There is a plan to have PDF (Pune Design Festival), where Manoj of
Onio is heading the effort to have international celebration of
design in Pune. This is planned for december this year.

Rajesh from Kyoorius exchange was planning a design week in
september in Mumbai.

Icograda Design week in Mubai is planned for January 07 in Mumbai
and Prof. Ravi Pooviah is organising that.

I am sure the new association from Bangalore will also have a few
activities planned this year.

Besides this CII-NID design summit would be in December,

BW-NID design awards should be around then too.

so there seems to be a calendar full of design activities.

If you add the Singapore, Thailand, Hongkong, Dubai, Doha, Amman
design events to this diary...indian designers would be really busy.

I plan to bring out a few publications on Design with Designindia.
Await details as they will be put up here.

There doesnt seem to be any Graphic design awards...but this is now
just a matter of time before we have as many awards as events.

Meeting offline is not really a big effort, i have been travelling
and meeting members in various parts of the country, some outside
too. Meeting on organised platforms takes time.

There is a meeting planned for Icograda Design week planning on 5th
at IDC, may be those who have time can drop in. I will confirm the
time later on.

PS: By the way AIGA has agreed to be a mentor organisation for
Designindia. details being worked out and will post when they are
done.

Dear Poonam

Great news and we wish you all the very best in bringing vigor and
substance to Design in India. The National Design Policy is languishing
for want of professional attention from the design community and this
may help bring in a greater degree of concern in government and
industry to this not so young profession in India which deserves better
attention than it is getting today.

"National Design Policy to be unveiled in January — `Designed in India'
label to assure quality"
Hindu Business line, Mumbai , Dec. 9, 2005

Yesterday I sent a mail to all my foundation students to conclude my
current course in Design Concepts and Concerns (DCC 2006) and I had
forwarded them a note from Dr Richard Farson and I quote a part of my
messsage below:

Quote
"....about Design, "an ancient, distinguished and thriving discipline",
as Richard Farson calls it in his paper, Management by Design on his
website.

Some people behave as if design was invented yesterday, but I would
urge you to see the paper by Dr Farson at the link above called
"Management by Design and it is a call for Design as Leadership by all
managers and a call to all Leaders to use design. Our country needs to
hear this message loud and clear.

Quote from the paper..

"We should not underestimate the crucial importance of leadership and
design joining forces. Our global future depends on it. We will either
design our way through the deadly challenges of this century, or we
won’t make it. For our institutions—in truth, for our civilization—to
survive and prosper, we must solve extremely complex problems and cope
with many bewildering dilemmas. We cannot assume that, following our
present path, we will simply evolve toward a better world.

But we can design that better world. That is why designers need to
become leaders, and why leaders need to become designers."

Just to say that we have formed an association of Industrial Designers -
Its called the Association of Industrial Designers of India - AIDI.

We did want to get the website ready before we made a formal announcement -
And since that is nearly done - I guess that its appropriate to share the
fact that
An association now exists.
Who formed this - a group of industrial designers in Bangalore.
The current office bearers are from both IDC and NID.
Suryaprakash Gowda is the President
Sapna Behar is the Vice President
Sandeep Mukherjee is the Secretary
Micheal Foley is the Jt Secretary
Murali is the Treserurer

All of us know that as association is only as good as what the members do
with it.
So as soon as the website is ready - its up to us to make the most of the
platform .
More details as soon as the website is up - April sometime.

I'd agree with Somnath about the 'going a step further'. I am not sure in
what direction and in what way does Somnath suggest we do this, but Sudhir,
it would definitely be more meaningful to extend the activities of this
group beyond the virtual media. Is it possible starting up a design society
like the AIGA or something where people meet, put out their work, do
something tangible, stretch their ideas beyond discussions, an organisation
where people meet, exchange work, network and which may also serve as a
design resource for India.

What about design awards.. and i know there's the abby's and all for
advertising, someone please enlighten me about graphic design awards as i
honeslty am not aware of any.

Maybe a design resource book/ annual. We refer to the New York Festivals,
The One Shows, Graphis, Archives, Print etc books as design resources. What
about a book for Indian design like the Indian Advertising book... I mean
advertising sure seems to have a more visible presence than design and maybe
rightly so but the design scene has changed a lot here and something like
this could also be a useful tool in bringing in a lot of foreign business to
india. This would help blur topographical shortcomings. Also, most people
outside India are very interested in our culture but they are not sure of
working together or outsourcing their work from here because they dont
really know what work here is like. I wouldnt say completely because we do
have clients outside of India but there is still a lack of visibility for
our design community elsewhere.

It sure is a huge task and its not going to come around overnight but there
needs to be some start at some point and as long as we feel interested too.
This seems to be the right time because the design industry is flourishing
and people are taking notice of the abundant pool of indian talent. Kyoorius
Exchange as Nidhi pointed out seems to be headed in this direction of
starting an Indian design association. The frankfurt book fair in India this
September should also help bring some recognition for indian design.
Its interesting and things seem to really be moving at super speed!

and btw, i still do want to know if there are any indian graphic design
awards, am clueless about it.

Wanted to know if there are any professional bodies
for designers? Is SIDI still functioning? I think we
all understand the benefits of professional
associations that can steer design awareness and act
as organized bodies to promote design as an essential
business process.

We have an excellent e-group that has produced some
very fertile discussions on design but we still remain
rather inward looking as a community. We are all
convinced that design is important but are we doing
enough to convince the business community at large?

Isn’t it time we have something more concrete?? Sudhir
can we take your effort one step forward and lay the
foundations of a design association…….

Hi Pooja and Ruchi,
yesterday I was talking about changing the careerpath
but truely I do not wish to untill unless nothing
absolutely nothing I can do in the field. Pooja what
Ruchi has adviced is to the point and true.
Yesturday I got an email from Deepal and one of teh
suggestions she gave me about going to a design house
or any agency in the town and giving kind of volunteer
work, is a good option. This way would be able to see
what is going on and get some experience which would
be helpful in future.
If you truely enjoy what you have done then do not
give up.
Smiles

Hi Sudhir,
I am taking the liberty to add in a few words to
Pooja's query. I hope you dont mind.

Hi Pooja
If, you are open to travel, you can look for freelance
assignments in Delhi, for which you possibly need to
travel a day for getting your design brief and back
for a presentation.
If, you do not know where to start and how to look for
these freelance assignments, you can always approach
NIFT Delhi to start with. I also think NIFT Delhi has
a NIFT shop, it atleast existed in my time (
FD-1996-1999), they used to allow NIFT graduates to
supply their labels for the store.
I dont know if you like Indian Textiles and Craft, but
if you do, you can approach, Fabindia in Delhi,
Dastakaar in Delhi, and many more of these kind of
outfits opened now, they all are into Indian Textiles,
and can possibly give you assignments that you can
work on from Lucknow, since Lucknow is a craft centre,
so you can exploit that.

Best Of Luck!

Dear Pooja,

Reshaping your career path is all about answering three simple questions.

Do seek work to constructively engage your self and utilize your talent/
academic education? (Not necessarily for money)
Do you wish to work to earn money and be self-independent?
Do you want to be an entrepreneur /creates a niche for your self?

If earning money is NOT your primary goal and wish to constructively engage
yourself then…... You can design, teach or offer your talent services to NGO’s
and other development organization.
Lucknow has loads of cooperatives who promote chikankari and other
handicrafts. Look for there numbers in yellow pages…make a few calls, introduce
your self…. Go visit them if possible. And Offer your services and leave your
contact number with them.

You can search and contact organizations in your city over net and leave your
e-mail address with them as well.
Also Try writing to your college for some references in your city.

If you want to EARN money and that’s your foremost requirement …BUT have
failed to find a lucrative job opportunity for your self then I suggest…
You do some out of the box thinking and create a job or service for your self
and then market it.

    Here are some suggestions.

You could look for some good karigars in chikankari and get some embroidery
sample developed. Take the samples to exporters and designer and book orders for
pcs or yardages. You can locate the list of designers in your city through net
or yellow pages. Even if they don’t give you orders leave your reference number
with them…most of the exporters and design houses need reliable outsourcing
agents for embroidery at some point or the other.

You can design and develop a range of products from the indigenous
handicrafts.
And market it through craft fairs or a public web site. There are several B2b
portals available for the same. All you need to do is research them.

You could develop few samples and try and sell them through network of family
and friends. If response is good then take the same product line to small gift
stores and boutiques in your area. Ask them to keep it on consignment bases.

If the design and products you develop are interesting then you can also try
and approach next shop, ogaan, karma and other designer places…the fact that you
are from NIFT, should help you.

Remember nothing happens over night, persistence always pays. True creativity
is rare and always appreciated if well marketed.

   Good Luck

Hi Sudhir,

This is my first letter of this kind to you.

Actually it is the mail from shraddha that gave me the inspiration to wrte to
you.

   Well I'm a NIFT,Mumbai passed out(2001-2003 batch),now settled in Lucknow.

Now being a NIFTian ,I could hardly find any scope here in Lucknow, but I
cannot relocate myself on permanent basis......for an year or two its fine.I
have also tried to contact some very good brands which like M & S,
Pantaloons, etc which have now become operational
here,.......................unfortunately they offer designing or merchandising
openings at their corporate offices only.

I have somehow managed to work here as the HOD of Wigan & Leigh College
(I)Ltd. (Fashion Deptt.) alongwith some KVIC projects of Khadi and freelancing.

Kindly advice as tohow should I reshape my careerpath.

   Thanks & regards,

   Pooja Singh

   Dear All,

You may have noticed that Designindia has now crossed 700 members.

The membership on a forum like this is mostly by word of mouth.

I believe there a lot many more designers (obviously) who are not
members of this group yet.

I was hoping we would be 1000 members by this March end.

Now with 3 days left, i wonder if this 700 community can rope in 300
members in 3 days.

So here is the challenge, lets make 300 members in remaining 4 days.

Send me mail on sudhirelephant@... with email ids of designers
whom you know, and who should be on this group, send a cc to them
too.

alternatively you could ask them to request for membership with
intro on the group.

They need to be professional designers (not students) or students
doing diploma projects (final project), must mention their school of
design.

So lets do it.

Roll now
