Hi Jinan,
what you are doing seems very interesting and worthwhile.

Like many of us, I have always been in cities. As a student (at
school and later in NID) I have always found that those who had spent
their earlier years in rural areas were (on the average), as you and
Sudarshan Khanna put it - responsive and responsible, mature and
calm. There is a dignity about them (again a majority). As an aside,
recent studies sponsored by the National Geographic society on
immunity and allergies also shows those with a rural upbringing more
resistant to the usual ills and ailments that plague their city
counterparts. Our former neighbours in India - both scientists at
ISRO gave up lucrative careers to bring up their two children in a
rural community - and there are echoes of these in the west - more
and more people are heading out to the countryside (so are
supermarkets).

Again, on a more academic note ////many of you may want to stop
reading here/// there are a few themes -

The whole Marxist take on the rift between the consumers and the
producers - in rural communities, the producer or craftsman may still
have a direct connection with the consumer, making his or her labour
worthwhile. The theme of cities and human alienation is another one -
modern Philosophers like Henri Lefebvre and the Situationist Movement
led by Guy Debord, looked upon spontaneity, play and festivities as
necessities of daily life opposing the forces of beauracratic
planning - unfortunately city life itself seems to present a vision
of governments, planners and architects - of control and activities
dictated by time. James Donald describes his grand overview (a view
of NY from the World Trade Centre), devoid almost of human beings, as
"the fantasy that motivates planners and reformers in their desire to
make the city an object of knowledgeable and governable space". Le
Corbusier is another professional that some would love to trash - his
utopian vision of cities is a sanitised one. Far removed from the
humane existence of unplanned but organic existence. In a nutshell -
these writers/thinkers give us more and more reasons why life close
to nature favours a much higher probability of growth and development
of a humane child within a fullfilling family context.

Another reference point may be the more recent television documentary
exploring the concept of happiness and if it can be measured. Part of
a 10 point finding (in a boring but commercially sucessful town of
Slough) was that those who feel part of a community and are involved
in growing (plants, and possibly beards) are statistically more
likely to be happy - again supporting the cause for small rural
communities...

/// see:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/lifestyle/tv_and_radio/making_slough_happy/

Enough random ramblings, its a subject close to my heart, but if you
are looking for material, inspiration or further support for your
great cause - there is plenty around - the work of French
philosophers, anthropologists and thinkers in the second half of the
20th century is a excellent starting point. And let me start looking
for a house in the countryside and more importantly grab my lunch
before the sandwiches run out.

All the best and good luck with your work.
Jay

Hi Jinan,
Rishi Valley may be a good school to look at.

*Learning to be yourself *
**
There is a rich and vibrant programme of rural education and health care,
natural history and bird studies, ayurveda and herbal therapy, afforestation
and rainwater harvesting, and much else. Rishi Valley is a way of life for
them.
http://www.hindu.com/mag/2006/07/23/stories/2006072300190400.htm

Am not sure if everybody has such luxury at their disposal.

Saptaparini is an NGO working with children in Hyderbad.
They have conducted numerous workshops for children and would be open to
your suggestions.
Again these are for financially well off parties. :)

hi,

welcome to design india egroup. I am sudhir sharma and i moderate this group.
I was in NID during 1983-1989 time and then started elephant design with four
other graduates.

It will be very nice if u can post a brief introduction of yr self on the group
as yr first message. Where are u, what are u doing, where did u study and any
issues u may want to disscuss. this will help others and friends to know that u
are there and to know u.

Also chk out pictures, update yr address in database phonebook as well as take
part in Polls. You have a choice of not recieving mails in yr mailbox and chk
them online...if u need any help on this count let me know.

the membership to this group is through invitation only...only u can invite yr
friend, or whomever u think worthy of being on a professional designers group.
DO send me a mail if you want someone to be invited on the group.

thank you once again and keep posting messages.

Visit POLL section of the this yahoo egroup regularily and put in your opinion,
It is surprising ho many of us think of design profession and what it really
is...

You are welcome to debate those issues, but your vote can tilt the poll...

So be there...sign of leadership is that they are always there.....

lets remove some myths from our profession...POLL...and often.

PS: you need a yahoo id for polling. In case you do not want yahoo id...just
mail in your opinion.

Dear Jinan
I am glad that you have the sustained interest and experience in what
constitutes the real and meaningful education. There are several
experiments carried out by many institutions and individuals and most of
these point out that a lot is learned by children through active
participation in what constitutes our daily living and the
relationships. Many years ago, I used to conduct what was called "Rural
Design Workshops" for senior students of design. In one of the workshop
the then communication design student Poornima Rao took up my basic
theme " How does a girl/boy of about 10 year has so much higher level of
skills , professional competence and a developed sense of responsibilty
as compared to the child of same age particularly from the so called
quality education urban schools. I have been occationally writting and
talking about this but more in the context of indegeneous design education.

Keep us informed with your insights and experiences .It would be great
to share more on this very significant area. The common understanding
and realisation is important for facilitating young people for all
careers and professions but more so in the context of design education.

Best wishes
Sudarshan Khanna

dialogue with parents and teachers to re-look in to what we are doing to our
children in the name of educating them. The tragedy is more evident among
the so called privileged children in the cities as their childhood itself is
taken away from them with the result we see violence, unhappiness / depression
and even suicide.
> Having been living with rural people for the part 16 years and having
observed the children very closely I know that at least rural children are much
happier, independent, observant, spontaneous and intelligent then the city kids
as rural children do have a different environment. So 7 years ago I began to
document various aspects in their life through images / film clips. For
instance how children are left free to explore the world, to learn various
skills. How they plan, abstract, construct etc. How their senses are activated
in this process and how beauty is an integral part of their activities. The
relationship between Parents and children, between girls and boys between
children themselves. How teenages boys take care of infants. From all these I
have realized the commanality between the children of non-literate communities,
I presume anywhere in the world. Here I found the development of the natural
child where there is freedom, love, co-operation where

responsible, sensitive than their urban, privileged counterparts

Personally I have found the plastic chairs by

Hi Suvi,

Try contacting Bangalore Film Society (George Kutty,
Suresh Jayaram et al) for help. I used to be a member
while I was in Bangalore. They may be able to help
you. There was a preview theatre where we had some
screenings somewhere around Lalbag road. I am not too
sure now. It is around 10 years ago!
