well that clearly shows the education and strength of
the powers that be in sikkim. a huge congrats to them
for a job well done. sadly such high fines i believe
might be the only way to make the rule a 'real rule'
and not one easily broken. now, if only all the other
states in india can follow through with similar
measures.

dear all,

a story i want to share, usage of plastic bags has been banned in sikkim for
about 7yrs now in sikkim and besides public participation the state police
department has helped a lot into checking that usage of plastic bags in shops
and other commercial areas is discouraged. a fine of rs.2000 each is charged
onto the customer and the shopkeeper.
so despite the fact we still got products being sold with plastic packaging in
the shops which we buy and dispose thus polluting the environment, the state
government with the public participation has managed to take the first step
towards banning platics from the market.

this is a great idea for india.
the plastic bag situation is really horrendous for the
environment.

one thing i can share from living in a very
environmentally conscious country, sweden, is that
here, the grocery stores charge various amounts for
various sizes of plastic bags, if you choose to use
them from the store. i think this is a great way to
cut down on excessive plastic bag usage. for the
budget/environmentally conscious, it makes them take
their own bags/reuse...before 'buying' a bag each time
they shop.

Aug 2007 Caution: Stereotypes Under Construction
   By Janea Triplett
   -------------------------------------------------------------------------

I ran across an article, "Four approaches to user modelling." I found it almost
ironic that while we were discussing creating user profiles, this article was
creating profiles of HCI professionals. After the article stereotyped the HCI

I think apart from changing habit i.e. remembering to carry a bag while going
to shop and having alternative jute bags that can be taken after paying a
deposit.
I feel that if the shop keeper charges a good amount of money for giving a
plastic bag, the usage will decrease automatically in a majority of sections of
society. The price of plastic bag that is sold to the retailer should include a
hefty tax which is levied as a pollution tax (the money should to used for the
same).
So in return the retailer will not give the bag generously to the customer,
rather will ask for a price.
The user will try to reuse/ look for alternatives.
Few years ago all cities had small cottage industries, where bags out of old
newspaper were made. At that time the bags used to cost 1-2paisa. That used to
be bread earning task for a lot of families. If that could be revived as an
alternative at small scale in all small and big cities and a subsidy given to
such products, we will go back to using eco-friendly material more.
I think plastic is a wonderful material and plastic bag is an amazing example
of an efficient product that uses so less material and works efficiently. It is
just that we need to use it intelligently so that our future generations can
live in a cleaner world in years to come.

Subject: [designindia] alternate to plastic bags

Hi guys, a small issue that needs 5 minutes of thinking from any who
  have the time...

Children of aditi,( students council) having meeting with yelahanka
town council , ( bangalore) next weekend, to try to reduce use of
plastic bags in the area, also having meeting with various high
powered parents to get them to sponsor production of reusable
replacement bags( to reduce using plastic bags given by groceries.) .
The companies these parents work in will sponsor these bags, will get
  their logo's on the bags.

Now can anyone think of exciting low cost features in these
replacement reusable bags, that will make people want to use them,
rather than use plastic bags that the neighbourhood grocer thrusts on
  them?

  common problems
I always forget to take this bag when i go shopping,

solution-scrunch it up and put it in a small zip bag, on my keychain,
always keep some in the car /scooter boot.
make sure u put them back in the boot so they r available the next
time u just drop by at the grocers on the way home from work.

Any others common problems /mental blocks/ solutions,( either of the
3 will do, all 3 not reqd)
the scrunched up bag on the keychain, was used in cyprus, when they
made the island plastic bag free.

Colors India 2007: Details of programme!

Trend forecasting is the key need for industry today. When we want to engage
with the emotions and seduce the sensibilities of the new consumer,
aesthetic considerations of design and color are what will create the
critical difference. Color is the first thing that people see.
Every company has a business plan. Every business needs to plan for trends
in color.By succesfully predicting color trend you are first in the market
with the right color at the right time.
At the first cross industry Color Trend Conference in Mumbai, Trend and
Color futurists, color designers, communicators and consumer trend analysts
share their view of the trends. It is a wonderful mix of international
experts, those who work in Asia and specialists on India trends.
Businesses are investing in knowlege; and one of those areas is the
conversion of raw consumer information and intangible ideas into viable
commercial prodcuts and propositions. You want to be ahead of the trend so
you can plan to deliver it to your customer. This session is a must for those
of you who want to lead with innovation from creation of the product to its
placement the retail space.
Be there, August 31st, Friday. Or be Gray.  Log onto www.colorsindia.com
for more information and registration.

FORMAT AND SCHEDULE of conference.  (Please Note: Workshop and Color

The NCS is a world standard color system enabling one to research color,
create color palettes for application and communicate color to consumers and
within orgainzations.
Latika Khosla | Design Director | Freedom Tree Design
Freedom Tree design's approach is based on forecasting colour directions and
design evolution two years in advance by tracing the tendencies for social
behaviours that may emerge a couple of years later. Colour is seen as a
powerful force that can transcend cultural and industry borders to influence
consumers across the globe.

Timeless, universal and mysterious fragrance has been a powerful force in
ritual, medicine war and death. Does a fragreanc trend have a scent of a
color? From fashion house fragrances to the humble detergents, all is
revealed.
Sonia Manchanda and Jacob Matthew | Founding Partners | Idiom Design.
In the Indian context, what meaning does color evoke? Why and how do retail,
product, communication designers choose their palettes. Prefixed notions lie
below the surface in the minds of consumers and how do designers work with
them. Idiom will examine emotions, expressions, textures and how they can
create new meanings for the future.
Santosh Desai | MD CEO| Future Brands
Given the number of adjectives it attracts, India is not an easy culture to
decipher especially as it goes through dizzying change. This presentation
tries and makes sense of an India that is moving in new ways even while it
strives to hold on to itself. Some emerging themes of change are identified
without descending into anything as vulgar as a prediction.
Mary Ward | Creative Director UK Ireland | ICI Paints

my thoughts on ikea...you get what you pay for. but
design wise, they can't be beat. ikea is still the
most popular furnitura/interior place, even in its
origin country. we have noticed that other furniture
companies can't compete with them in price range and
design styles for EVERYTHING. plus they have a good
restaurant to eat at, after all the shopping! :)

hello all!

my name is yamini and i recently joined this yahoo group out of personal and
professional
interest. i am an art director from southern california but have been living in
sweden for
the past 3 years. i am american born but of south indian heritage and hence
always have
an interest in most things indian.

i travel to bangalore/mangalore generally every winter and each time i try to
connect with
something design related, so when i stumbled across this discussion group, i
thought it
would be a beneficial place for networking.

i've always had a creative streak in me and studied graphic design at arizona
state
university and received a bachelor's degree specializing in graphic design. i
was heavily
involved with AIGA (american institute of graphic arts) while living in orange
county,
california and was president of the local chapter for 3 years. Through AIGA i
learned more
about an int'l design group, ICOGRADA and was asked to speak at their first
north
american conference held in vancouver, canada. it was a wonderful experience,
which led
me to become a 'friend of icograda'. this has broadened my networking and
education into
the int'l community of design.

i have worked in the advertising industry in southern california and also as an
art director
for a fortune 500 technology company. so my experience field is quite broad. i
was also
doing some freelance for a client in los angeles when i first moved to sweden.
now, im
concentrating on learning the swedish language first, before being able to work
here. i'm
in my mid-30s, so i feel like i have a good deal of experience as well.

also, i'm currently a new mother of a baby girl and want to be able to keep my
design
career/mind alive by participating in discussion groups/events/ judging/speaking
possibilities.

thanks for the acceptance in this group and i hope to be as active as
possible!!!
cheers!

Dear fellow :creators, designers, engineers , entrepreneurs I would
like to propose a activity for our group….. that is to play judge to
a mock competition with real entrants based on "New Inventions"
Many of you might have browsed the TV program website I had mentioned
in my previous postings that is
http://www.abc.net.au/tv/newinventors/

Here is what I propose
Lets assume roles of judges and using the Yahoo group polls lets see
what we, as a group from a different part of the world come up with
as the "Best Invention" of the week!
I will upload a poll with a expiry of 7 days and choose 3 inventions
from the past episodes of the entrants from this program
You have to vote based upon these criterion
Originality
Need
Marketability

I guess it would be very interesting as some of the products will be
totally irrelevant to the market place that most of us operate in!

What you think?
Shall I start it in a day or two or it is a bad idea?

Dear Friends

Speaking of blogs, some of you may be interested in exploring blogs and lists
from India.

You already know that I have set up one recently called "Design for India" which
discusses
issues and opportunities for design action for India today and this can be seen
at the link
below:
<http://www.design-for-india.blogspot.com/>

The blog also includes many links to Indian design related links as well as
numerous
global links of interest, including the anthrodesign list besides others that I
have been
looking at closely for thought leadership in all areas of design. Take a look.

The other Indian design related links include the following:

Design in India: <http://www.designinindia.net/>
a fairly comprehensive directory of resources for Design in India. A great
resource
managed by the IDC team headed by Ravi Pooviah.

DesignIndia discussion list on yahoogroups: <http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/
designindia/>
a list populated by over 1000 Indian designers as well as International
designers and
researchers interested in design applications in India. This list founded by
Sudhir Sharma
and now managed by an active team of volunteers who assitst him on a day to day
basis.

Design with India: <http://web.mac.com/udaydandavate/iWeb/Site/Home.html>
an initiative to connect with India through global networks in the USA and other
countries
that was inspired by the discussions on the DesignIndia list. managed by Uday
Dandavate
it is a repository of papers and information about national and international
events
planned as part of the "Design with India" initiatives that was inspired by the
DesignIndia
discussions and coordinated wioth the CII-NID Design Summit activities.

I have set up another blog last week to work with the course that I offer at the
National
Institute of Design called "Data Visualisation". This blog called "Visible
Information India"
will focus on the course work of our students as well as commentaries of the
faculty on
design opportunities for India in the field of Data Visualisation.
<http://www.visible-information-india.blogspot.com/>

I find that this is a great way forward for sharing views as well as Images
which are so
important in design discourse. I would urge all of you to consider setting up
your own
blogs that can cover your professional work as it happens and this would help
put the
design work from India on the world map in real time. What do you think?

With warm regards

HCI Vistas
Aug 2007 Sensing of Meaning and Introvert Products
   By Pankaj Sapkal
   -------------------------------------------------------------------------
The human mind is geared to derive meaning out of what it perceives. And this
attribute is so fundamental to it, that it may even be the most basic building
block of human cognition. In our zest to dig out some meaning from everything,
we even go to extreme lengths.....

Just as there are introvert humans, there are introvert products, or introvert
interfaces. They are difficult to understand - they don't talk to you, they do
not tell you what they are all about and they do not tell you how to interact
with them. And by virtue of them not being easily understandable, they just make
the average user feel stupid...

Illiterate as the Key Factor for Rural E-learning Design" as part of downloads
on HCI Vistas for those interested.

You should do some bumper stickers, too. We have so many vehicles and no
bumper stickers with desi content, to speak of.
