Hello all,
Below is an invitation for proposals for the RGF-Sarai
CSDS programme for short-term FLOSS fellowships. Please feel
to circulate this far and wide. The deadline for submission
of proposals is the 25th of June. Please feel free to address
any queries with regards to this to floss at sarai.net.
Regards,
Gora

Call for proposals:
RGF-Sarai, CSDS, short-term FLOSS fellowships
1 Introduction
The Sarai programme of the Centre for the Study of Developing
Societies, Delhi (http://www.sarai. net) is pleased to
announce fellowships for projects related to Free/Libre and
Open Source Software (FLOSS) activities. This year, we have
partnered with the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation (RGF) who are
providing support for work in the specific area of computing,
and localisation in five Indian languages, namely, Assamese,
Hindi, Kashmiri, Oriya, and Urdu. We also invite proposals
from projects in other FLOSS areas, especially ones that are
relevant to educational, social, and community needs. Any
project that meets the criteria given below is eligible for
the fellowships, but we are particularly interested in:
o Indian language computing, including work on fonts,
rendering, locales, input methods, spell-checking,
etc., as well as in advanced technologies like OCR,
handwriting recognition, and speech-to-text.
o Localisation into Indian languages of user interfaces,
and translation of help documents for FLOSS
applications.
o In the interest of sustained development, we would
like to see the enhancement of, and extensions for
projects funded as part of past Sarai FLOSS
fellowships. In particular, we draw attention to
NewsRack (http://newsrack.in), Hindawi
(http://www.indicybers.com), and ApnaOpus
(http://apnaopus.var.cc).
o Documentation for users of FLOSS tools, particularly
in the area of Indian language computing. The
production of video tutorials would be welcome.
o Development of graphics, multimedia, and publishing
tools. This would include applications for audio/video
editing, animation, and desktop publishing.
Enhancement of existing FLOSS tools is especially
encouraged.
o Putting together, distributing, and supporting a
complete Indian language distribution, using FLOSS
operating systems, and tools.
o Collaboration software, and groupware solutions.
o Writing Linux device drivers, and front-ends for
common hardware, such as wireless cards, graphics
cards, scanners, and printers.
The other significant difference from past practice is that
we will be asking for more of a collaborative approach from
the fellows, both among one another, and with people at
Sarai. The collaboration need not be in the actual
development, but can consist of an ongoing conversation about
one's work, its direction, and current status. While this
has been an implicit expectation in the past, this time we
are making the requirement explicit. The exact details of
these will be worked out with the selected fellows, but will
include things like discussions over IRC, email, and postings
on the Sarai Project Resource Centre (PRC) mailing list.
Fellows will also be asked to prepare a timeline for the
projects, with intermediate milestones, and will be expected
to adhere to them.
2 Applying for the fellowships
We invite students, developers, researchers, and
practitioners interested in the FLOSS arena to apply for the
fellowships. While there is no prescribed format for the
applications, we expect them to be in sufficient detail for a
reviewer to sensibly evaluate them. Attention to details,
such as a plan of work that addresses what is possible to
accomplish within the limited project period, a projection of
how the work might be continued after that, and a discussion
of the possible impact of the project, is strongly
recommended. In particular, we will look favourably on
projects aimed at eventual deployment, rather than
development per se. Please mail your application, along with
a resume, to floss at sarai.net , with the subject line of
"RGF-Sarai FLOSS fellowships". As this information is
intended to be public, also subscribe to the PRC mailing list
at https://mail.sarai.net/mailman/listinfo/prc, and post a
copy there, failing which your final proposal will be
forwarded there by one of us. Enquiries are invited at floss
at sarai.net , and on the PRC list, including questions on
how to frame proposals. The last date of submission is
midnight IST on Sun., June 25th, 2007. The projects will run
for a total of about six months, with a final workshop to be
held at Sarai, CSDS, Delhi, where the fellows will be
expected to present a summary of their work. Besides this, as
part of our engagement with the RGF, we will be holding
workshops in regional locations, and the FLOSS fellows will
be asked to be present at events local to them. The total
amount of the fellowship will be Rs. 70, 000.
3 Conditions
Applicants should have a valid bank account in any bank
operating in India. These are support grants, and the fellows
are free to pursue their primary occupations in parallel, as
long as they keep working on proposed projects. The fellows
must be willing to make a release of their final work under
any open-source licence approved by the Open Source
Initiative (OSI). Please see under
http://www.opensource.org/licenses for a complete list.
Proposals from teams, partnerships, collectives, and faculty
on the behalf of a group of students are welcome, so long as
the grant amount is administered by a single individual, and
the funds are deposited in a single bank account in the name
of an individual.

Hot news ....Around the world... this is interesting ....' true' ... Authentic...!!!
( This new company, founded by a bunch of Stanford MBA students, is
creating quite a buzz. ) u could be a member of a new google ....... which pays to surf the net ... free..!!!!! for the first time in the internet history.....
Hi Friends
I have worked just for 8 days and my monthly check is plus 45000 $ and will keep on increasing.... this is not online job..... its the next google which is already very popular, the early signups also profit by getting shares with the internet company which will pay a bigger check for the shares ... then the regular one ...!!!)
(Bill Gates and The founder of YouTube has also been saying that AGLOCO will make quite a hit in the internet when the toolbar comes out. Sign up now before it get huge. Don't miss this opportunity.)
Hello friends
AGLOCO is the furtue of the internet.
Thousands of people have already joined Agloco, jump on board NOW !!! Every once in a while a real
business opportunity does come around. The Agloco deal is one of the rarest due to its "revolutionary" nature vis-a-vis the current internet environment.
The Agloco biz is probably the easiest way to make money online. For all internet users this is great news !!!
It is even better news for retired seniors, housewives, students and anyone who is interested to earn some pocket money, without spending much time and effort.
You DON'T have to be any computer techie...NO ROCKET SCIENCE HERE.All you DO need is a computer and internet connection which CAN BE SHARED among family members .You surf the Web as you NORMALLY DO, NOTHING MORE.You DON'T have to refer others IF you don't like to do it 'cos you'll still earn. Referring others to join you can of
course increase your earning but it's YOUR OWN CHOICE.
AGLOCO™ is short for "A Global Community." The founders of this company plan to do just that, create a global community of users. The purpose of this community, in short, is to make money. Most - if not all - online global communities already do this, but, for the most part, the money is not put into the hands of the community members, but only into the hands of those who own the infrastructure of the community.
But here's the really cool part: it isn't just cash that AGLOCO users will receive for their time. AGLOCO users will also, eventually, receive publicly traded shares in the company, representing real ownership of the company. The cash one could receive is good
enough, but the potential for ownership and future appreciate of share values makes this a unique opportunity.
As the AGLOCO community grows, the company will generate more revenue, meaning the potential for increased shareholder value is strong. Since it costs nothing to become an AGLOCO member, this is indeed a very worthwhile investment of one's time, time already spent online (which, before now, only made someone else rich).
EARN WITHOUT EVER INVESTING A PENNY!!! This may look like something you have seen before, but I bet you may not have ever seen THIS YET ON THE INTERNET!
Agloco costs you nothing. It's free. And it always will be.
Agloco pays you by
the hour to have their small Viewbar open.
Agloco pays you by the hour to have your friends have their Viewbar open.
Once you start using the Viewbar, you'll get a check every month in the mail.
Once you sign up, you'll get your own referral URL that your friends can use to sign up Every 5 people that you refer to Agloco will double your income.

Hello All,
Greetings for the New Year from LINUX For You magazine team!
As you all know, we run a section called 'Opinions' in LFY where we
pose a question to the community and industry and publish the
responses (selected by our technical editors) in the magazine. Thanks
to all those who responded to the last month's question. The best
among the responses received have been published in the January 2007
issue of LFY.
The forthcoming issue of LFY would carry a story on the following:
How to develop a community of open source developers?
The article would focus on methods of driving innovations in the open
source arena. What are the factors that inhibits innovations in open
source? Who bears the responsibility to drive innovations and
developments? Also, at what stage of education should this be initiated?
We value your suggestions and comments. So, any idea you would like to
share with us is most welcome.
Please write to us at sujata.banerjee@... with a CC to

Dear Readers,
First off, on behalf of the whole team of LINUX For You, here's
wishing a very happy Dussehra and Diwali to the whole community.
This month, LINUX For You has bundled another 'hugely-requested'
distro DVD with it - CentOS 4.4 - which many believe is the closest
one can get to RHEL for free.
On the editorial front, we have a mega story on the trends in Linux
and open source usage in the mighty Banking, Financial Services and
Insurance (BFSI) sector of the Indian industry. Along with this, we
have our regular hardware focus on 'Linux Laptops' and software focus
on Linux based High Performance Computing Solutions.
Under the opinions section, this month, the community opines on how
India can develop a community of open source developers and thus
become a 'net-giver' to the open source world. Also, in the 'Down
Memory Lane' series, we look at the history of the GNOME project.

July 2006 issue and the Debian 3.1 DVD bundled with it.

usage in their ever increasing IT setup. Also, in our trends section,
we take a look at the extent of Linux usage in educational institutions.
The topic for CommunitySpeak this month is "What would make a Windows
user pick up a Linux magazine?" and "What would make a Windows user
adopt Linux instead?" Also, in the 'Down Memory Lane' series, we look
at the history of Knoppix.

Dear Readers,
First off, we would like to thank our readers for an overwhelming
response to the June 2006 issue of LINUX For You.
The monsoon season brings with it a gift that we are sure most of our
readers were eagerly awaiting. For the third month in succession, LFY
has bundled a DVD, and that too, a distro that had virtually become
the 'numero uno request' on our readers' wish list - Debian Linux 3.1.
Check it out and do send us your feedback.
On the editorial front, we have a great article on the tuXlabs project
which is a partnership between the Shuttleworth Foundation and South
African schools to setup self-sustainable computer centres in South
African schools using open source. We have also included a resource
manual - the tuXlabs Cookbook - in this month's LFY CD that serves as
a recipe for setting up a tuXlab and explains formal processes like
education, application, installation, support and training that define
the tuXlabs model. We hope that this article and the cookbook will
serve as facilitators for the policy makers in our country to take
full advantage of open source in our education system.
Starting this month, a new column has been introduced called
CoomunitySpeak. Here, we take a topic and post it on various LUGs for
members to give their opinion on the same and the best 5 responses get
a place in the magazine. This month's topic is 'Why is it that a clear
majority of world's top ten supercomputers are powered by GNU/Linux?'
Also, in the 'Down Memory Lane' series, we look at the history of the
Firefox project.

Hello all,
Greetings from the Linux For You team!
As you all know, last month we launched a new initiative called
CommunitySpeak where we pose a question to various ILUG mailing lists
and publish the top five responses (selected by our technical editors)
in the magazine. Thanks to all those who responded to last month's
question on "why a majority of the world's top 10 supercomputers are
powered by Linux". The best five among the responses received are to
be published in the July 2006 issue of LFY.
The selected responses were sent by Vishnu Vyas (Chennai), S R Parthan
(Chennai), R Subramanian (Chennai), Manu Konchady (Bangalore) and P
Sriram (Chennai. Thanks again for your participation.
This month we have chosen the topic: "What would make a Windows user
pick up a Linux magazine?"
No, this is not a marketing tactic. We are *really* curious. What
would make Windows users pick up a Linux magazine? How can we convince
them to read about and adopt Linux and other free and open source
software? Would they be interested in reading about free business
software than run on Windows?
What's your take on this? Our eyes and ears are wide open and we are
waiting to listen to your ideas. Please write to us at
writetojanani@... with a CC to atul.goel@...
The top five responses will be published in the August 2006 issue of
Linux for You.
Look forward to your responses.
Thanks,
Janani Gopalakrishnan, Freelance Writer
Atul Goel, Asst. Associate Editor, LFY
P.S: We have not tagged this as commercial as we feel that there is no
business involved in this information. But if you feel that it should
be tagged please let us know so that we can do it from the next time.

Dear Member of the LUG,
TuxHeroes are those individuals (or teams) that have successfully
handled the challenge of migrating their firm/institution to Open
Source/Linux environment.
LINUX For You magazine attempts to highlight the accomplishments of
these TuxHeroes with the help of a monthly feature dedicated to them.
In
the process, we'll also share the experience and knowledge gained by
TuxHeroes with the rest of us.
If you are one (or know someone)—send us the contact email-id. We'll
contact the heroes (and heroines), and request them to share their
experience with all of us.
To submit any info regarding TuxHeroes, send an email with subject
titled 'TuxHero is Here' to lfyedit@... with a Cc to
atul@.... We will revert with a few questions, request for a
couple of snaps, and make sure the heroes and heroines are given due
credit of their achievements.

Dear Readers,
Last couple of months have been simply rocking for the community -
first it was Red Hat who rocked the centrestage with the release of
Fedora Core 5 and this time it was Novell's turn to hog the limelight
with the release of their much-awaited and celebrated distribution,
SUSE Linux 10.1. Though it was tight, but LFY managed to bundle SUSE
Linux 10.1 DVD with June 2006 issue. Check out the LFY DVD this month.
This month, we have tried to keep the content also equally rocking. As
always - from newbies to power users, from biz users to policy makers
- there's something for everyone. Our cover story this month deals
with the issue of trademarking of the brand 'Linux'. We continue our
exploration of Asterisk - the revolutionary open source telephony tool
- by finding out how to write dialplans. There is also an article on
how you can create your own applications for Symbian based smart
phones. For the newbies, we present three great open source tools -
FreeMind, F-spot and Scribus - that find use in applications like idea
management, photo management and desktop publishing and are sure to
make your life simpler.
A good news for the game crazy. Starting this month, LFY will carry a
regular news column featuring latest updates from the Linux gaming
world. Also, in the 'Down Memory Lane' series, we look at the turn of
events that made OpenOffice.org stand where it is today.

Historic Libre Graphics Meeting set for next month
Tuesday February 21, 2006 (09:00 PM GMT)
By: Nathan Willis
The Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM), a first-of-its-kind conference for
developers of free and open source graphics applications, is scheduled
for the weekend of March 17 through 19. LGM will feature speakers from
the GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, and other graphics projects teams, and will
showcase the public premiere of Elephant's Dream , the 3D animated film
created in Blender by Project Orange.
LGM is free to attend and will be held at the university campus at La
Doua, Villeurbanne, in Lyon, France. Speakers are scheduled for Friday
and Saturday. Among them is the GIMP's Øyvind Kolås, who will present a
talk on his implementation of the long-awaited Generic Graphical Library
(GEGL) concept, Gggl. Marti Maria of LittleCMS will talk about color
management, and adding it to graphics applications. Neil Howe, chief
technology officer of Xara, will present an update on the company's work
at opening the source of the Xara Extreme vector graphics editor and
porting it to Linux.
GIMP developer Karine Delvare will deliver the only presentation in
French, on her own experiences joining a free software project and what
others should know if they are interested in doing the same.
Demonstrations are scheduled by artist Andy Fitzsimon on Inkscape/GIMP
integration and by Gerald Friedland on the innovative SIOX image
extraction tool. Craig Bradney and Peter Linnell will give a progress
report on Scribus.
Jon Phillips from Inkscape, CREATE, and Creative Commons, and Cèdric
Gemy from TuxPaint are on the schedule, but haven't announced topics
yet.
Saturday's last talk will be a presentation by the Blender developers,
focusing in particular on Project Orange, the "open source" animated
film being produced with Blender and other free tools. After their talk,
participants will get a special treat: the world premiere of the
completed Project Orange movie, Elephant's Dream.
Conference organizer Dave Neary said he is excited about LGM, as it is
the first conference dedicated entirely to free and open source graphics
software. Neary says that the event grew out of a relatively humble plan
to get the GIMP's developers together. But as word of the meet-up
spread, programmers from Inkscape and Scribus expressed interest in
attending to work on cross-project collaboration.
LGM organizers soon extended invitations to a host of other projects,
and when the timeframe seemed to coincide with Xara's open source news
and Project Orange, a full-fledged conference was born. Neary says he
has had to scramble at times to get sponsors on board and commitments
from speakers, but he says he is excited at the response thus far.
Neary emphasizes that the event is not limited to software developers,
and encouraged artists, students, and any other interested party to
attend. To that end, much of Sunday is reserved for Birds of a Feather
(BoF) sessions, impromptu meetings, and so-called "lightning talks" --
five- to 10-minute presentations open to anyone, users included.
These sessions, Neary says, will feature "tutorials and demonstrations
of programs which are given by the people who use them the most; not
just developers talking to users, but users talking back." The LGM wiki
has pages set aside for attendees to organize some of these less-formal
meetings in advance of the conference. Neary encourages projects not
already on the schedule to attend and schedule BOFs or lightning talks
at their discretion, and to contact conference organizers if they want
to reserve formal meeting space.
Neary has also tried to build open blocks of time into the schedule, in
which attendees have access to the conference facilities and are free to
meet, brainstorm, and collaborate with each other. "The benefit of the
conference is in having [open] and frank exchanges," he explains, "and
having lots of users (that is, artists) present opens up a whole new
perspective for the conference."
