"Just like food and water, personnel mobility is a necessity of human existence
Poor and developing nations like India depend largely on I/C engine for 2wheeler
for the mobility of it's working n middle class .As a result of this India has
emerged as the largest manufacturer of 2 W bikes/scooters in the world (even
over taking china-incidentally 12 provinces of china has banned the use of I/c
engine)

Basically I/C engine vehicle offers convenience, low cost; range also does not
require grid power, the fall out of this

a) Many players have emerged as manufacturers

b) Created well established service net work

c) Development of component suppliers

d) Created skill jobs locally

The negatives:-

a) Energy conversion in I/C engines is only 20% on calorific value

b) Spews large quantities of carbon di oxide an environment threat

c) Huge noise pollution

d) Under dense city traffic wastage of fuel at signals due to idling

The futility of depending on "Fossil Fuels" has been an impetus to look for
alternate solutions and energy.

On the solution side a paradigm shift towards usage of electric vehicle/ battery
operated transport mechanism is on the horizon, this has brought about a lot of
R&D work and demonstrable benefits (more of it later), on the energy side
Renewable energy like wind, solar etc are making inroads into the established
methods of power generation with evident benefits of green energy.

Hence the alternate to personnel transport could be an electrically powered
vehicle

The main constraints associated with E-Bike/Scooters are

Cost along with battery
Range
Inconvenience
After sale service
Power requirements

Dwelling on each of the above issues

a. Cost: - If battery cost is separated from purchase it makes it very
economical and attractive to the owner, by adopting a scheme of "Subscription
Battery Exchange Program" the owner buys only the vehicle and no battery.

b. Range: - The improved battery design and the changes in the battery
electrode like" lithium" it is established that the range can be over 100KMs per
charge (this is a tested proposition).

c. Convenience- The fast charging of batteries upto80% in half an hour
reduces the earlier inconvenience of waiting for the battery to be charged for
8-10hrs in the case of Lead Acid Batteries.

d. Servicing: - The existing skills of mechanics/auto electrician can be
honed suitably.

e. Power requirement for charging :- Regular breakdown and erratic grid
power does not augur well could be a crippling factor , fortunately the power
requirements for charging batteries of vehicles are not huge to have a dampening
effect.

Here it may be noted that the Government of India has announced under the "JNTU
Solar mission" and is worth looking briefly

a. Offers generation of power locally to meet the nearby requirements

b. All public sector offices and factories have to generate power through
SPV using the space available rooftops ,sideways etc

c. All multi and big stores have to generate power thru SPV

d. Public places like Railway stations, Airports, ports, cinema halls and
many more have to generate power using the SPV route

e. Big industries have to follow as above
All these installations costs money and the government has announced attractive
incentives, custom duty concessions as also setoff on capital expenses, these
policy changes are very welcome and will spur generation.

Now the scheme briefly

1. Customer buys only the bike/scooter.

2. Enters into an agreement for subscription based battery exchange program
,has the following options

a. To purchase pre determined kilometers( say 500Kms)

b. Has an option on post paid depending on the used KMs.

c. Purchases high value KMs at prevailing rates and uses till it is
exhausted

Charging stations

It is proposed to set up charging facilities at strategic locations in city like
parks , parking areas, Railway stations, Airports, Multistoried buildings, malls
etc here the batteries are charged for 30-45 minutes when 80% of charge is
restored to the battery , for long distances battery swap stations are
established for the battery to be changed quickly so that the journey is not
interrupted
Additionally when the customer becomes a subscriber of this scheme he is given a
smart card which allows the following facility

1. An RF id based authorizes network access preventing electricity theft.

2. Automatic SMS text warns the driver of events/issues such as charge
completion etc

3. Real-time remote control monitor.

4. 24/7 network support

5. Power is energized only when the card is swiped for the charger door to
open , similarly swipe to remove/ disconnect confirming the utilized time/power.

6. Over charging/ undercharging at station

7. Integrated RD Id recognizes n identifies charge point network and
authorization.

8. Indicates the grid power availability at various points to help customer
the choice of charging place as also the free charger availability along with
the time of availability as this would avoid disappointment and waste of time,
waiting etc.

9. Additionally thru GPs network get direction/ make known the various
charger points enroot

Many other features can be built in on similar lines of mobile phones

Of course this would require additional support from

Government to offer incentives on purchase of electric bikes,
Major institutions to reimburse partial cost of vehicle/ battery - variable pay
of techies to be linked to purchase of e-bike, and so on.
Manufacturing units which normally provide parking facilities for vehicles/bikes
to provide charging facilities also security and possibly deduction from the
salaries of employees using the power for charging the batteries.
Malls like Big Bazzar to provide charger installation facility and security
thereof.
Railway Station and Air ports , and other public places to come forward to
provide similar facilities and security.
All this calls for finance, engineering support and monitoring the scheme( which
would be a humongous task ) additionally the benefits of carbon credit will add
up to the financial benefits/gain ( though of course the choice of battery
lithium needs investigation)

Shall be happy to receive your views/comments

Subject:: India - 700,000 e-bike sales by 2011 Prediction by ebike zone

Send Email Send Email

The NY Times reports that it all began in China where an estimated 120 million electric bicycles now hum along the roads, up from a few thousand in the 1990s. They are replacing traditional bikes and motorcycles at a rapid clip and, in many cases, allowing people to put off the switch to cars.

While countries in the Asia Pacific region will continue to account for the vast majority of E2WV sales in the next several years, the fastest growth will occur in the Middle East (54% CAGR), Latin America (30%), and North America (24%).

Examples:

  • India - 700,000 e-bike sales by 2011, up 483% from 120,000 in 2008. This is quite impressive given that it had virtually no sales at all in 2007.
  • Europe - 2.5 million e-bike sales, up 355% from 550,000.
  • United States - 500,000 e-bike sales, up 194% from 170,000. Best Buy began selling electric bicycles in June at 19 stores.
  • China - From 2008 to 2011, Chinese e-bike sales are expected to grow by 43% from 21 million to 30 million electric bicycles. China had 56,000 electric bikes in 1998 and it got to 120 million in 12 years. It is a phenomenal change, even in a country as populous as China.
  • Netherlands - A third of the money spent on bicycles last year went to electric-powered models. Similar growth expected in Germany, France and Italy.

E-Bikes are already a big trend in China so we have a proof that the above difficulties can be overcome. The develop world maybe stand against other barriers but with the right regulations, city design, technical progress and by putting money in the right places wonders can happen almost over night.

Wishing You A Merry Christmas..
from E Bike Zone

Far away in Bethlehem, a Baby Boy was born;
Born with neither riches nor with fame,
Yet Wise Men came from all around to bring to Him their gifts,
And peace was felt by all who heard His name.

Angels watched Him as He slept, and gently rocked His bed;
Their voices singing softly in His ear;
His Mother and His Father both gave thanks to God above
For the greatest gift of all, their Son, so dear

They knew His life upon this earth would not be filled with wealth,
They also knew He would encounter strife;
But most of all, they knew that He would be a loving Child,
And teach the love of God throughout His life.

At Christmas, as we celebrate this Birth of Jesus Christ,
Let's keep in mind the truth of Christmas Day;
For it's not the Christmas wrappings, nor the gifts that lie within,
But our gift of love to others in every way.
..

India which now ranks as 7th largest car market will move up three places by 2014 according to global consultant Booz&Co.  Indian vehicle market is growing steadily with a double digit growth in recent years. According the report, Indian passenger vehicle market will be 3.5million from 2 million now. Car makers from across the world have pumped in millions of dollars on creating plants and launching india specific products. The trend may continue as the car majos like puegeot-citroen and proton will enter the market. Under the Automotive Mission Plan (AMP), the Indian market had earlier set a target to become a USD 145 billion by 2016, for which USD 35-40 billion investment is required.

But where are the roads to accommodate this booming vehicle population? India's ambitious plan of constructing 20kms/day remains a dream. With the parking spaces already became a scarce one, people are going to find it hard to afford to parking and toll charges rather than buying car.

Dear Friends!

Petrol in Pakistan Rs17/- per litr. Malaysia Rs 18/- per litr. Only in India it is Rs.65/- per litr. Why is there a difference within India itself? World Market CRUDE Oil is not the reason for this. It's all Gain for private owners? As we are the general public, we  have to raise our voice, let's raise thru Emails.

Forward this to all Indians who care. It has been calculated that if everyone did not purchase a drop of petrol for one day and all at the same time, the oil companies would  choke on their stockpiles. At the same time it would hit the entire industry with a net loss over 4.6 billion dollars which affects the bottom lines of the oil companies.

Therefore " Feb.14th " has been formally declared "stick it up their behind " day and the people of this nation should not buy a single drop of petrol that day. The only way this can be done is if you forward this e-mail to as many people as you can and as quickly as you can to get the word out.

Remember one thing, not only is the price of petrol going up but at the same time airlines are forced to raise their prices, trucking
companies are forced to raise their prices which affects prices on everything that is shipped. Things like food, clothing, building
supplies medical supplies etc. Who pays in the end? We pay.

A day that the citizens say "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH" We forward so many junk email to many of our friends, now let us do it for some useful cause to cut down the price of the petrol ...... REMEMBER : * 14th February 2011 *

Let us live our rights and save ourselves.

The municipal corporation had mooted several proposals to decongest the city?s commercial hub, but these were never implemented. One such idea was to run 200 battery-operated vehicles to ferry people from the proposed multi-storey parking lots to the key shopping establishments. The civic body had decided to introduce the Rs 100 crore-project under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) during Kamlesh?s tenure as mayor in 2009.

According to the plan, green vehicles with a capacity of eight-10 people were to shuttle on the internal roads of Sector 17, connecting the entire sector to the multi-storey parking areas. To begin with, four such vehicles were to be introduced. The facility was thought to be particularly helpful for the aged and differently abled. But it remained on papers only.

Moreover, the administration had mooted an idea to convert the areas under paid parking into no-parking zones two years ago to revitalize commercial activity by decongesting the area. But this too, never materialized.

According to a survey conducted at that time, over 90,000 vehicles used paid parking lots daily.

Once these are declared parking free zones, the plinth level of the metalled area would be raised and covered with chequered tiles to merge it with the existing pedestrian area to provide pedestrian space. The existing paid parkings are also insufficient for the increasing number of vehicles. This sees a manifold rise during weekends and owners are forced to park in the green belts at times. The first multi-level parking would have a capacity of 700 vehicles, said an official.

A Never Eanding  Lolly-Pop From Goverment :((

Budget 2011-2012 has, quite literally, brought "a breath of fresh air" for cars that run on clean fuel. In his budget speech Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced a slew of sops for cars that run on CNG, LPG and other hybrid and alternative fuels. He also spoke of plans to set up a National Mission for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles to promote such vehicles.

"The Indian automobile market is the second fastest growing in the world and has shown nearly 30% growth this year," Mukherjee reportedly said. "To provide green and clean transportation for the masses, National Mission for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles will be launched in collaboration with all stakeholders."  Also read our story on Budget 2011: No price hikes for cars and bikes expected

The exact contours of the proposed National Mission for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles is unclear at the moment, but we expect more details to be released in the coming months.

Once formulated, the policy will make hybrid vehicle kits cheaper thanks to an excise duty rebate of 5% from the current 10%. Imported hybrid parts may also be completely exempted from customs and countervailing duty (CVD)! Expect this to bring down servicing charges and costs for replacing parts of, say, your Toyota Prius considerably! That's not all; the FM also proposed a concessional rate of 5% excise duty to reduce import dependence and encourage production of critical parts in the country itself.

Those who'd be fitting CNG and LPG car conversion kits will get a reduction of 5% in excise duty. That would translate to savings of Rs 1,500-2,000 assuming the kits cost Rs 40,000. Related: Quick guide to CNG, LPG cars in India

The sops extend to cars that run on fuel-cell technology as well, which will get an excise duty rebate of 10%. This would make cars like Honda FCX Clarity cheaper, if the car does get launched in India, though we reckon they are still a few years away. For those who have no clue what a fuel-cell car is, these are basically zero-emission vehicles and use fuel cells to convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, which in turn powers an electric motor, and the only by-product is water vapor. For this to become a reality, we'll have to have hydrogen filling stations set up around the country first, besides finding safe means of storing hydrogen on board, as it's a highly inflammable gas.

The proposed incentives may also help bring down costs of some upcoming electric cars like the futuristic, four-seater Mahindra Reva NXR, slated to launch this year. The Reva electric car is currently offered in 3 trims: Standard, AC and Classe, with prices starting at Rs 3.56 lakh. Also read: Electric cars in India

Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) President Pawan Goenka welcomed the FM's proposals and was quoted by PTI as saying, "It will allow advanced technologies to be developed in India rather than importing technology." Pawan Goenka is also the president of Mahindra and Mahindra, a company that has been experimenting with new technologies, such as diesel-electric hybrids and bio-diesel vehicles.

Early this month, DWS Auto had reported that the government was mulling introduction of a new policy to encourage Indian car makers to build hybrid cars in the country. Looks like India is finally serious about projecting itself as an environment-friendly nation. Read more: Hybrid cars in India might get a kickstart as government mulls new policy, our earlier story on what's expected in 2011.

"Solekshwa" Eco-Friendly Dual-Powered Rickshaw Launched

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Smt. Sheila Dikshit, today launched "Solekshaw", the solar-electric rickshaw for eco-friendly urban transport, at a function organized on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti near the Chandni Chowk Metro Station here in the august presence of Shri Kapil Sibal, the Vice-President, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, CSIR and Union Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences. Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari, the Director General, CSIR was among the other dignitaries who were present on the occasion.

The dual-powered Soleckshaw is the CSIR's solution for the dual problem of decent employment generation for the masses and mitigation of global warming. More than 60% of the increase in the green house gas (GHG) emission is from the transport sector. Currently, no powered vehicle or transport system is free from carbon dioxide emission. Soleckshaw, with its zero carbon foot print and the trend of widespread use, is expected to reverse global warming and protect the planet from the perils of the climate change. Its worldwide use would also enhance energy security by reducing the world's dependence on limited fossil fuel. Equipped with novel features, this pedicab is easy to drive, both on plain as well as uphill road, without any strain of imbalance, which all of the current cycle rickshaws suffer from.

Born out of the recent CSIR vision, appropriately titled, CSIR-800 aimed at empowering 800 million Indians by way of S&T intervention, the Mark I version of Soleckshaw has been designed, developed and prototyped by the CSIR's national laboratory, the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) at Durgapur, in a record time of eight months. The accompanying solar charging station for swapping the batteries has been set up by the Central Electronics Limited (CEL), a Govt. of India undertaking. The specifically designed robust low power high torque brushless DC motor has been developed for the first time in India by the Crompton Greaves based on the specifications provided by CMERI.

The Advanced Materials & Process Research Institute (AMPRI), another constituent laboratory of CSIR, has provided excellent support for the Technology Demonstration Project (TDP) at Chandni Chowk. AMPRI's fly ash jute-polymer composite-based instant housing unit houses the battery bank. The Centre for Rural Development (CRD), an NGO working on rickshaw banks in different cities, has joined the TDP as a partner for wider deployment of Soleckshaw. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has provided the facility for accommodating the solar charging station at its Delhi Metro Station at Chandni Chowk. The MCD has further facilitated the TDP by allowing necessary construction in Yudhbir Singh Park and its use for a period of one year. The synergy among the above organizations reflects the ethos of CSIR in true Team India spirit.

Robust and ergonomically designed to take the drudgery out of the rickshaw driving, the prototypes of Soleckshaw were earlier flagged off at CMERI, Durgapur, by Prof. Brahmachari, on August 17, 2008.

With better aesthetics and ergonomics, the cost-effectiveness of Soleckshaw has been engineered by optimizing the system around the most appropriate commercially available components. This would also minimize the capital requirement for a mass manufacturing unit. Only the novel sub-assemblies like the differential drive, the special hub motor with regenerative feature and the light weight solar panel need to be manufactured apart from the chasis designed for comfortable ride even for the senior citizens and physically challenged. Innovative business model is being evolved with NGOs, banks, environment-loving corporates and manufacturing organizations to make the rickshaw available to the drivers at the cost of an ordinary rickshaw.

10,000,000 Electric Miles!

Over 1,500 Tesla Roadsters around the world have now driven more than 10 million real-world miles, the greatest distance covered by any electric vehicle maker to date. Said Tesla CEO Elon Musk: "We owe this achievement to Roadster drivers around the world and their pioneering adoption of electric vehicles."

The Roadster launched in 2008 as the only highway-capable EV in the world, and today it still has no equals. Roadster 2.5, the fourth iteration of the vehicle, demonstrates Tesla's continuous innovation and close feedback loop with engineers and customers. It continues to break new barriers.

From Vancouver, Canada to Melbourne, Australia, the Roadster has proven that drivers don't need to compromise to go electric.

Takao Ozawa, Japan's first Roadster owner, is a board member of Civic Force, a non-profit disaster response organization in Japan. He reported on his experiences since the the earthquake and Civic Force's efforts. Roadster owners and Model S reservation holders worldwide responded by donating thousands of dollars. Tesla Tokyo has reopened and continues to support relief efforts, having just recently coordinated the delivery of 7,000 water bottles to Ishinomaki Senshu Daigaku.

Who's Ready for Spring?
This winter, Tesla Roadsters across the world showed off their all-weather capabilities (seen here near Nagano, Japan). "Tesla have managed to change our perception of Winter electric vehicle motoring," saidAllCarsElectric.com. Now that we busted the myth that EVs don't work in cold-weather, let's move on.

Spring is here, it's time to take the top down!

If you are a green guy and has concern over increased global warming and do your bit by emitting little-than-regular pollutants while still enjoying those drag races and long drives, then I think you will like to take some time and throw a glance at this lovely new bike.

500

As you see, I know that you really can't take your eyes off this majestic, ivory-colored, sporty muscular bike that has an awesome frontal view.

When there is so much hue and cry over the two wheelers and their contribution to air pollution, the hybrid electric bike should be answer perfecto! True! You don't have to change your mode of commuting, you can switch over to this hybrid bike and people will regard you as a responsible motorist even as you go for long drives.

500

The picture says that it appears to be very heavy and muscular; however, looks are often pretty deceptive. This hybrid electric bike comes with indeed a fiber body, thus making it quite light in overall body weight. But heh cool! Because, this is what it makes the bike great with respect to fuel efficiency. The aerodynamic looks gives all the air resistance and the style coupled with single-seat leaning adds to personality and dynamism of this special motorbike, and that's what impresses you at the first glance.

But that's not end to it. This bike comes with hybrid technology. Well, wondering what this hybrid technology means?

Then here it is! It combines an electric motor as well as an Internal Combustion engine to facilitate lower exhaust of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. You already know that the bike has high fuel efficiency; that coupled with an electric-charged redundancy makes this hydrid bike the best option for the crowded city roads you have otherwise been commuting with your ol' bike.

500

As you see the bike has a two-stroked 135 cc petrol engine along with a power supply of 72V. The two stroke engine implies that on one hand compression as well as intake is combined while on the other exhaust is combined with power.

The motor is powered by lead-acid battery that is placed compactly not distorting the style and look of the bike. The cost of lead battery is also comparatively lower, thus making the bike economical as well.

But, the obvious question remains with regards to battery recharge. It gets fully charged in a time span of 5-6 hours and will fuel 50 km per charge with maximum speed of 40kmph. Now you don't have worry of the speed, I like to speed off the roads and not remain stagnated at 40kmph. So better pick up and mileage is assured by Distributed Open Air Filters.

The bike has a self-starting system and it toggles manually efficiently without hassles for switching between the petrol and the electric operation modes.  But still, it's the battery issue that is of concern in a hybrid electric bike that is mostly being taken care of through regenerative system of braking.

The safety features of the hybrid electric bike are praiseworthy as it comes with disc brake system. The chassis of the bike is connected to the front and rear ends through axles and shock absorbers that protect the vehicle from shocks from pothole-filled roads. The mono-suspension system ensures comfort driving as well as better balance to ride. Additionally, there are springs in the suspension system that helps to reduce shock and they act as fantastic cushions to shock absorption.

The picture shows the wheel and tyres. While wheels are made of alloy material the tyres are tubeless, thus contributing to the lightweight of the bike. The headlight is quite effective to ride even on a foggy day.

Apart from its advantage of low cost and fuel saving, you can leave home with no tension, if you have a fully charged battery, thus reducing dependency on oil that bores a hole in your pocket. It does not make much noise or create vibration on stopping and braking. Most importantly, you will be a happy rider while you drive on your bike you are still responsible and doing your bit to save earth.

HISTORY OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Electric Vehicles (EV) are not a new phenomenom. In fact, EVs have a history of over 100 years. They enjoyed much popularity between the mid-19th century and early 20th century, when electricity was the preferred method for propulsion.

The EV was silent, clean, and simple to operate. However, its range was limited by the charge of its batteries. Thus, EVs were restricted to areas where they could easily return home to recharge or where recharging facilities were made available by a local electric power company.

Early EVs were slow compared to steam or gasoline-powered cars, with the normal cruising speed being less than 20 miles per hour. Higher than normal speeds cut down on the range that, in the early days, would only be about 25 to 40 miles. EVs enjoyed some success in the early years of the last century but ceased to be a viable commercial product by about 1920.

Subsequent advances in ICE technology and the invention of the electric starter negated this advantage; the greater range of gasoline cars, quicker refueling times, and growing petroleum infrastructure, along with the mass production of gasoline vehicles by companies such as the Ford Motor Company (which reduced prices of gasoline cars to less than half that of equivalent electric cars), led to a decline in the use of electric propulsion, effectively removing it from the world's automotive market.

Roger Smith, CEO of G.M. , agrees to fund research efforts to build a practical consumer electric car. G.M. teams up with California's AeroVironment to design what would become the EV1, which one employee called "the world's most efficient production vehicle." Some electric vehicle enthusiasts have speculated that the EV1 was never undertaken as a serious commercial venture by the large automaker.

1990
California passes its Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, which requires two percent of the state's vehicles to have no emissions by 1998 and 10 percent by 2003. The law is repeatedly weakened over the next decade to reduce the number of pure ZEVs it requires.

1997
Toyota unveils the Prius -- the world's first commercially mass-produced and marketed hybrid car -- in Japan. Nearly 18,000 units are sold during the first production year.

1997 - 2000
A few thousand all-electric cars (such as Honda's EV Plus, G.M.'s EV1, Ford's Ranger pickup EV, Nissan's Altra EV, Chevy's S-10 EV, and Toyota's RAV4 EV) are produced by big car manufacturers, but most of them are available for lease only. All of the major automakers' advanced all-electric production programs will be discontinued by the early 2000s.

2002
G.M. and DaimlerChrysler sue the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to repeal the ZEV mandate first passed in 1990. The Bush Administration joins that suit.

November
Struggling to remain profitable during the economic downturn, executives from the Big Three American automakers go to Washington to make the case for a $25 billion Federal bailout of the U.S. automotive industry.

December
BYD, a Chinese battery manufacturer turned automaker, releases the F3DM, the world's first mass produced plug-in hybrid compact sedan. Though they pack less energy than more conventional lithium ion batteries, BYD opts to power the F3DM with a more stable lithium iron phosphate battery. BYD plans to release the F3DM in the U.S. in 2011, but some industry insiders have doubts about whether the car is ready for the U.S. market. Though sales of the car remain sluggish, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway purchases a 10% stake in the company.

The National Bureau of Economic Research states officially that the U.S. has been in a recession since December 2007. The economic downturn is global in scope and will continue to exert financial pressures on the already battered U.S. auto industry.

2009

General Motors, the leading producer of automobiles for most of the 20th Century, files for bankruptcy protection. While strong GM brands such as Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC are slated to continue, smaller names like Saturn, Hummer and Pontiac will be sold or closed. The federal government will hold a 61 percent stake in the reborn General Motors.

August
Nissan unveils its new electric car, called the LEAF ("Leading, Environmentally Friendly, Affordable, Family Car"). The LEAF is capable of a maximum speed of more than 90 mph, can travel 100 miles on a full charge, and has a battery that can be recharged to 80% of its capacity in 30 minutes. Similar to the Better Place initiative in Israel, Nissan plans to work with the Japanese government and private companies to set up charging station networks across several countries. The first production LEAFs are scheduled to go on sale in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. in the fall of 2010.

Late 2009
Though a few electric cars and plug-in hybrids are currently available on the market, several new models including the Nissan LEAF, Chevrolet Volt, and Mitsubishi i MiEV are scheduled to hit the streets in the near future. Toyota, creator of the popular Prius hybrid, has thus far declined to deliver a fully electric car.

Despite promising signs, the electric car will need to navigate a bumpy road before it can become a viable option for many drivers. Challenges to mass adoption include high sticker prices, limited battery life and travel range, and building charging stations and other infrastructure to support electric vehicles.
