``` Art Painting: The Death of Socrates ```
Artist: Jacques-Louis David (French, 1748–1825)
Painting: The Death of Socrates
Date: 1787
Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 51 x 77 1/4 in. (129.5 x 196.2 cm)
Credit Line: Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Collection, Wolfe Fund, 1931.
Accused by the Athenian government of denying the gods and corrupting the young through his teachings, Socrates (469–399 B.C.) was offered the choice of renouncing his beliefs or being sentenced to death by drinking hemlock. David shows him calmly discoursing on the immortality of the soul with his grief-stricken disciples. Painted in 1787, the picture, with its stoic theme, is perhaps David's most perfect Neoclassical statement. The printmaker and publisher John Boydell wrote to Sir Joshua Reynolds that it was "the greatest effort of art since the Sistine Chapel and the stanze of Raphael. . . . This work would have done honour to Athens at the time of Pericles." The subject is loosely based on Plato's Phaedo, but in painting it David consulted a variety of sources, including Diderot's treatise on dramatic poetry of 1758 and works by the poet André Chenier. The pose of the figure at the foot of the bed was reportedly inspired by a passage in a novel by the English writer Richardson.
``` 2010 Tough Guy Challenge ```

More than 5,000 wanna-be tough guys – and gals – from around the world descended on England Sunday, battling mud, ice, fire, and frigid temperatures in a bid to finish the 24th annual Tough Guy challenge.

About 4,600 of the participants completed the 8-mile obstacle course, a trial that has been dubbed the world's "most dangerous taste of mental and physical pain," the BBC reports.

Proceeds from the event, held in Perton, Staffordshire, are donated to charity.

Among the challenges participants face are leaps over pits of fire, swims through pools of mud, and a climb over an electrified fence called "The Tiger."

"There is nothing like this in the world, and that is why people from all over the globe want to come here," event organizer Mouser Wilson told London's Daily Mail.

"Every year there's something new – we have a zip-line this year which takes you down a 1,000 meters very quickly and if you don't let go above the water, you'll go straight into the wall . . . We had a fair few broken bones."

But many participants view the perilous course as "a journey of self discovery," Wilson told the Daily Mail.

And 32-year-old Lima Posthewaite of Bristol agrees. "Every single inch of you aches afterwards, but the sense of achievement is so satisfying that it's worth the pain," he told the paper. "This is the first time I've done it... but it won't be the last."

  A Long time ago, there was an Emperor who told his horseman that if he could ride on his horse and cover as much land area as he likes, then the Emperor would give him
the area of land he has covered.

Sure enough, the horseman quickly jumped onto his horse and rode as fast as possible to cover as much land area as he could. He kept on riding and riding, whipping the horse to go as fast as possible.

When he was hungry,thirsty or tired, he did not stop because he wanted to cover as much area as possible. Came to a point when he had covered a substantial area and he was exhausted and was dying. Then he asked himself, "Why did I pushed myself so hard to cover so much land area? Now I am dying and I only need a very small area to bury myself."

The above story is similar with the journey of our Life. We push very hard everyday tomake more money, to gain power and recognition. We neglect our health, time with our family and to appreciate the surrounding beauty and the hobbies we love to do.   One day when we look back, we will realize that we don't really need that much, but then we cannot turn back time for what we have missed.   Life is not about making money, acquiring power or recognition. Life is definitely not about work! Work is only necessary to keep us living so as to enjoy the beauty and pleasures of life.

Lessons to Learn from The Story:

Life is a balance of Work and Play, Family and Personal time. You have to decide how you want to balance your Life. Define your priorities, realize what you are able to compromise but always let some of your decisions be based on your instincts.

Happiness is the meaning and the purposeof Life, the whole aim of human existence. So, take it easy, do what you want to do and appreciate nature. Life is fragile, Life is short. Do not take Life for granted. Live a balance lifestyle and enjoy Life!

One of the greatest—and last—of the Nubians who ruled Egypt in the seventh and eighth centuries B.C., the pharaoh known as Taharqa restored the grandeur of ancient temples along the Nile while fighting off Assyrians who invaded from the north. Assyrian king Assurbanipal’s troops finally pushed him south to his Nubian homeland, where he died in 664 B.C.

After capturing city after city along the Nile River in 730 B.C., troops commanded by King Piye of Nubia storm the great walled capital of Memphis with flaming arrows. Piye modeled himself after powerful pharaohs such as Ramses II (statues), claiming to be the rightful ruler of Egypt. His triumph over the northern chiefs would unite all Egypt under Nubian rule for three-quarters of a century.

Rows of Nubian archers march in stride in a wooden model, about 20 inches high, discovered in Assiut in the tomb of an 11th dynasty provincial governor named Mesehti. This period, around 2000 B.C., was one of turmoil in Egypt, and many local chiefs recruited Nubians and other foreigners to fight in their armies.

Statues of Nubian kings up to ten feet high were found buried at the Nubian capital of Kerma, in Sudan. Smashed during Egyptian King Psamtek II’s incursion south around 593 B.C., they were recently reassembled.

At the height of his power, King Taharqa leads his queens through the crowds during a festival at the temple complex of Nubia’s Jebel Barkal, its pinnacle gleaming with gold. Accompanied by a sacred ship bearing an image of the god Amun, Taharqa is robed in a priestly leopard skin and crowned with the double uraeus that declares him Lord of the Two Lands—ruler of both Nubia and Egypt.

Nubia was a major source of gold for ancient Egypt. At Thebes the tomb of King Tutankhamun’s viceroy to Nubia—a man named Huy—shows Nubian royalty in procession delivering rings of gold as part of their tribute to their overlord.

Centuries after Nubia lost control of Egypt, it continued to follow its neighbor’s tradition of marking royal tombs with pyramids, like these restored at Meroë. Today Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt.

We love ourselves even after doing many mistakes.
Then how can we hate others for their one mistake.
Think before you hate someone or hate yourself.

The greatest advantage of speaking the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

If your eyes are positive you would like all the people in the world.
But if your tongue is positive all the people in the world like you.

Life is about the art of drawing without an eraser, so be careful while
taking decisions about the most valuable pages of your life.

I met money and said why everyone runs behind you, you are just a piece
of paper. Money smiled and said of-course I am just a piece of paper, but
I haven't seen a dustbin yet in my whole life.

Life is like a coin. Pleasure and Pain are the two sides. Only one side is visible at a time. But remember other side is also waiting for it's turn.

If you like someone, show it. It will be sweeter then telling. But if you don't like someone. Just tell it. It will be less painful then showing it.

Love doesn't start in morning and end in evening.
It starts when you don't need it and ends when you need it most.

What's greater then mom's love?
Which pillow is better then Mom’S lap?
Which company's better then friends?
There are some things in life with no substitutes.
Love them forever.

A CUTE STORY:
A man daily sent a rose to his wife. One day he died, but his wife still received roses. She asked the floweriest. He said, your husband paid advance for your whole life.
MORAL: Love someone forever.

A boy loved a girl so much. One day he proposed her. But she refused.
Still he was not sad. His friends asked him, didn't you feel bad? He said, why should I feel? I lost the one who never loved me. But she lost the one who really loves her.
