Re: [Goa-Portuguese] Fr. Freddy J Da Costa Memorial Trust established

Many  thanks for your narrative,Joao Cota.

Of course I am proud to be Goan and hence my return to that lovely place so often...to meet with my relatives and partake of daily routines as practised there. Yes,i have also traced my ancestry to my former Hindu name, from as long ago as the first conquistas by the portuguese ....so that is some achievement and proud to have gone so far.As long as we all remember our roots go back further than just portuguese names.  Dont forget 70% of true goans are not portuguese christian  and thery ARE Goans too.
My point originally was to accept that we are continuously being changed by our environment in which we live and as long as we see the portuguese influence(on 30% of Goans only) as a passing influence(our roots going back much further) then we have a healthy outlook on the earth community around us.It is an accepted fact that when Goans and other peoples emigrate from their own countries to other lands for economic reasons, they will long for their own community and country....see the various groupings sticking together in Canada etc etc...this is only natural ...but one has to be responsible in ones outlook as a world citizen.

Viva Goa. I speak the Salcete Konkani and I am told it is not the pure form so I will refrain from using it here.

Bom Dia

World citizen.

Hello Rene and Ralph and all,

Just as a small passing comment on both of your interesting emails, even though I was born, educated and worked in 4 continents and can speak as many languages, I still find it very important for me to trace back my roots. Not for any emotional reasons, but for curiosity sake. When I was in Goa recently, I did make time to go through some church records and then through the Govt archives too - and managed to go back 5 generations. It was fascinating and amazing on what I have found so far on my family!

I really could not care less if somebody tells me I am old fashioned, but the way I look at it as a Goan born overseas, the more things I find about Goa (via my antique maps, books, philately, etc) and perhaps my ancestors history, the more I consider myself...Goan!

My little son Ian is now 6 months old and he already started being specifically thought Konkani by his grandmother and parents. I think Ian will appreciate to know the name and details of the 7th person down his lineage someday...

There is a big, big difference between moving with time and to be 'moved alongwith' time. It is what you manage to take with you that defines who you are.

Regards,

Joao Paulo Cota

I have just read Ralph D'Souza's narrative.
Of course all of it is 'tongue in cheek'.It is about time that people made serious appraisals of the situation worldwide. It is nonsensical to keep on harping about emotional issues from the past with regard to India/Goa.It is time to move on and look at the global picture. Indians(and that means Goans too)  are now a global commodity and have moved to distant lands and contribute significantly to the economies of those lands...USA,Australia,UK etc etc. A better exercise for those emotionally strapped Goans would be to try and find our predecessors Hindi surnames.....yes,"family tree". Some of you will not want to go back that far in history(400 years)and would not like to hear the truth.I have found mine. Come on, move on in this Global community. Why is it that the emotional issues tends to be most felt mostly in the Goans that have emigrated to foreign lands and have made good ?Very few dissenting voices from Goa itself...they know better and they live there. I keep in touch with the homeland by visiting as often as I can and I am of that age where one can be emotional about these matters but it is shortsighted to do so.
Move on chaps...man has got to the moon you know...over 20 years ago.

Keeping with the Goa Clergy, me hopes the Memorial will be in Devnagiri script & the essay competition too.  During the Portuguese time, Hindus & Christians lived in harmony & peace.  It is just a " coincidence " that now there appears to be tensions.   Not to worry though,  the world's greatest democratic, God-fearing leader was in India & now India can join the nuclear club; what a privelege.  Soon there will be a large scale war between India & Pakistan.  Iraq & Afghanistan is stale stuff, the arms & ammunition industry needs new places to test the new equipment & nations to sell off the old war toys to.

Rush out & purchase stocks & shares of the arms & ammunitions industry & also the pharmaceutical industry that will come to the aid of the injured, dying & dead & sick.  Be a compassionate, caring human & support these two industries.
