Diseases in Goan fishes

AESE-Business School (Lisbon), I'm transcribing an
important communication about the Diseases of Goan
Fishes provoked by the pollution of Goan rivers her
estuaries and all coastal sea areas.

Diseases in Goan Fishes

Dr Joe D'Souza of Goa University and Professor Jorge
Eiras of University of Porto, Portugal, have in their
communiction to International Scientific Journals in
Europe and United States of America published their
novel findings on the parasites living on the fishes
of
Goa.
During the investigation conducted on 206 specimens of
live fishes captured from Goan estuaries of Mandovi,
Zuari and Chapora and also studying fishes obtained
from
trawllers in Goa Dr Joe D'Souza and Prof. Jorge
Eiras have isolated new species of the Protozoan
parasites known as Myxobulus goensis. It has been
reported here that the pollution of Goan rivers is
adding on to the stress on fishes of Goa. Since over
51 specimens of fishes showed infection by Protozoans
parasites it is observed that if pollution of Goan
estuaries, rivers and sea continues unabated the
strain on the fishes of Goa would reach above
sustainable limits which would affect the fishery
potentials of Goa. It has been established also that
infections by parasites observed above reduces
fertility and productivity in fishes and adversely
affects the economy.
These parasites also affect man when transfered to the
human body through consumption. The study included 27
different species of fishes consumed by the Goans like
the mackerals,sardines, mullets, gobro, sole fish, jew
fish, ribbon fish, lady fish, 'dodiaylo', pomfrets and
king fish.
Further studies on shell fishes of Goa are being also
planned by the above scientists.
