As per the information received from Instituto
Superior Tecnico (Portugal), Professor Julio Novais
from the Department of Biological Chemestry and
Environment, along with Dr. Joe D'Sousa of Goa
University, are collaborating on a proposal to clean
up pollution of Goan rivers caused by shrimp farming
and mining, through the use of microorganisms and
plants. This tecnology is in use in Portugal.
The biotechnological process would involve the use of
biological pollution control measures, where by the
microorganisms associated with the mangrove plants of
Goa like the Avecennia would be involved in treatments
process.
It is well known that the Supreme Court of India has
banned intensive shrimp farming in Goa, as well as in
rest of India due to the pollution caused by waste
waters from aqua culture ponds. There are several
research papers published by Goans scientists,
available at the library of Goa University on the
Environment Impact of Shrimp Farming in Goa.
The collaborative work by professors at Instituto
Superior Tecnico and Goa University would perhaps help
to reduce the levels of pollution in Goa.
We wish to the collaboration between Goan and
Portuguese Scientists all the success in their
Endeavour and we hope that Goan organisations related
with the Environment can support this important work;
in the same way we hope that all concerned goans
citizens can help the collaboration between goan and
portuguese scientists.
