Yesterday, February 28, 2002, was the last day of the two-month interim
period when the national currency "Escudo" and the European common currency
"Euro" circulated simultaneously. As from today the "Escudo" is no more, and
all transactions have to be made in "Euro" only. The Portuguese people had
no problem in adhering to the new currency, and "Escudo" coins and notes
have already started to become collectors' items. A full set of the latest
"Escudo" coins, with facial value of a little over 300 Escudos, is already
being sold by something like 15 Euros (= 3,000 Escudos).
