Former OHeraldo editor passes away
PANJIM, AUG 13 —
BY MARIA DE LOURDES
— Dr Antonio do Carmo Azevedo who was the editor of
the Portuguese edition of OHeraldo, a predeccesor of
the present Herald English daily passed away on Monday
at the age 91.
The funeral will be held on Thursday (August 14). His
body will be brought to St Inez Church, at 3.30 pm.
The Eucharistic celebration will be held at 4.30 pm,
followed by burial.
Dr Azevedo is survived by one daughter — Veena — who
resides in Spain. His elder daugther — Meena — died
two years back in Australia.
I was sad when I heard that Dr Carmo de Azevedo had
died. Mine was a more than two decade’s acquaintance
with the gentleman in my professional capacity as a
librarian in the State Central Library. However,
having lived in the same city, with a small
population, I knew him from childhood.
When he completed 90 years in 2002, with the
collaboration of Fundacao Oriente a group of admirers,
celebrated this event at the Fundacao’s premises. He
was very happy when he was told about the
celebrations, so much so, that he practiced his
speech, writing a couple of those everyday, till the
day of the event.
Dr Azevedo was a regular visitor to the library, rain
or sunshine. Even in his old age, before the family
disallowed him to go out of the house, he would come
to the library. He was an avid reader and read books
on all topics. A well and cultured man, he could
discuss any topic with ease.A well known face at
seminars and conferences, he always intervened in all
the papers and was himself a regular contributor for
the History seminars held in Goa.
His career as a journalist and writer had a long span,
having written even in late nineties. Monohar Shetty,
former editor of Goa Today told me once that he was
always prompt in delivering his contribution in time,
when he was a columnist with Goa Today.
He had a very sharp pen and did not spare anyone,
friend or foe, which gained him a number of enemies.
In the typical style of Goans of his time (and which
continues even today), he would bring to the fore all
the negative aspects of any work he was reviewing.
However, if a person deserved to be praised he did so.
Professionally he was trained to be a physician,
having completed his medical studies in the erstwhile
Escola Medica de Goa, with a number of distinctions
and prizes. He went to Portugal, where he studied for
a diploma of at the School of Tropical Medicine,
Lisbon. In Coimbra, where he lived for some years, he
studied French, Spanish, Italian and German. He was
prolific in these languages.Back in Goa he joined the
Directorate of Health Services as medical officer and
was posted in Gogola (Diu) and in Panjim. A
revolutionary at heart who would not accept injustice,
he could not get along with the authorities. He quit
the job and went away to the Union of India, where he
worked actively in different positions, which included
that of Medical Officer in Charge, Syrain Mission
Hospital, Honavar, worked part-time for Press
Syndicate, Bombay; external services, AIR, and as
medical officer with Municipal Corporation of Delhi
and also at Brazilian embassy.
He was correspondent of Il Pae se, Rome and Mundo
Afro-Asiatico, Editor of O Heraldo and The Clinician.
He has contributed regularly to Goan Tibune, Jornal de
India, Indian Express, Hindustan Times, Deccan Herald,
etc. Dr Azevedo had also founded Goa Advertising News
and Feature Agency (GANFA) which supplied news and
features to the local press. His contribution to the
local press have very important articles on Goan
historiography. He also had a regular column in the O
Heraldo under the title Bico de Pena where he used to
write about day to day happenings.
His publications include A Mao Estendida de Portugal,
Joao de Barros Responde a Pequito Rebello, Myth of Goa
Becoming a Province of Portugal, a rejoinder to J F
Dulles, Salazar’s Bluff Called, a point-to-point
reflection of Dr Salazar’s article on foreign affairs.
Dr Azevedo strived to maintain the Portuguese language
in Goa, started a couple of papers, which due to
paucity of funds had to be stopped.
