PANJIM, DEC 9 (HR) The State Government is sending a delegation to the Gulf
countries to woo Goans working there to attend the Goa NRI/NRG meet - Gomant
Vishwa Sammelan - to be held at Kala Academy, Panjim from January 3 to 5.
The delegation will be headed by the convenor of the NRI, Goa Facilitation
Centre which will host the event, Chandrakant Keni, and consist of a nodal
officer and joint secretary, Goa government Swapnil Naik, Anthony Correia
Afonso and MD of Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC), Pramod Shetye.
They will visit Kuwait, Bahrain and Dubai (UAE) from December 11 to 15. They
were earlier scheduled to visit the Gulf in November but for various reasons,
the trip was postponed twice, sources said.
This sammelan is being organised for the first time to bring together Goans
settled in other parts of the country - who are called Non-Resident Goans (NRG)
- and Non-Resident Indians - working or settled abroad.
The government is expecting a better response this year as the NRI Faciliation
centre has contacted Goan organisaions abroad and also in other parts of the
contry.
The centre’s team recently toured Pune, Mumbai etc to enlist registration for
the sammelan. Within a week, another team is scheduled to visit Khanapur,
Belgaum, Kolhapur etc for the same purpose.
Agriculture, education, healthcare, tourism and industry are among the areas
identified for consideration of some 600 delegates who are expected to
participate in the three-day global conference.
At the conference, a select few NRIs will be honoured with the Gomant Ratna
Awards in recognition for their achievements in professional and public life.
OUR NEW DELHI CORRESPONDENT ADDS: Around 50 Goans residing in Delhi will
participate in the Non Resident Goa convention due to take place in Goa in
January next year.
A senior official of the Goenkarancho Ekvott informed Herald that the enlistment
drive had been worked out by the organisation and a list had been forwarded to
the Goa government for other formalities.
A large chunk of Goans residing in Mumbai are also expected for the event.
It may be recalled that the NRI facilitation centre had hosted a meet for Goans
residing outside India last year had come a cropper due to lack of numbers and
no subsequent follow up action.
The present move to include Goans with success stories outside their native
State but within India would help add up the numbers and thus prevent any
chances of further egg-in-the-face drama. [Note: This article may be reproduced
