4th Konkani One Act Play Competition 2005 - Ignatius de Xelvon wins Top Prizes

4th Konkani One Act Play Competition 2005 in Kuwait

Ignatius de Xelvon's `Suryak Laglem Giran" wins Top Prizes

United Club of Utorda-Kuwait, in association with the Goan Welfare
Society organized the fourth One Act Play competition for Konkani
protagonists at the GES Auditorium, Rumethiya, Kuwait on 28/1/2005.

Ignatius de Xelvon's heartrending play "Suryak Laglem Giran" (Eclipse
of the Sun) bagged the best play award. The stage setting complete
to minute details, together with his fellow actors and the actresses
captivated the audience.

Ignatius de Xelvon also conferred on him the commendable honors as
the best director and the best actor. Salu Faleiro's `Kimsam'
(Mosquitoes) was declared the second prize winner.

The third prize went to "Mog Diat" (Share Love) a play with
contemporary theme written by Domingos Araujo and directed by Felix
de Merces.

"Ami Sukhi, Lok Dukhi" written and directed by Anthony Carr took the
fourth honours, whereas a popular play, "Lokak Zai Zalear" (If Public
Wishes) written and directed by Joe Fereira was also presented but
was uncategorized for competition.

The best actress award deservedly went to Gracy Morais for her
superlative performance in "Suryak Laglem Giran" and Simon Gonsalves
won the trophy for the best character actor for his role in the same
play.

Goan Welfare Society (GWS) General Secretary, Gaspar Almeida
commented: "With artistes and singers such as Simon Gonsalves,
Sylvester Vaz, Donald Colaco, Gracy Morais, Joseph Rodrigues,
Ignatius de Xelvon, Domingos Araujo, Micheal D'Silva, Salu Faleiro,
Anthony Carr, among others, we have creative talents amongst our
midst. Without any doubt, Jose Rod's presence added great interest
and charm to scores of his fans among the audience. "

"Some lament over the poor attendance for Konkani programmes. It is
the choice of artistes and their performance that matters most to the
audience", said a Goan journalist from the Emirates who is presently
with an overseas delegation attending the Hala February festivities.

Songs - solo, duo, duets and trios - by popular singers including
Jose Rod (Tiatrist), Ignatius de Xelvon (Porgottni), Gracy Morais
(Cheddva Chotur Rau), Joaquim Fernandes (Bogmalocho Ganv), Rony &
Jashime (Chintun Bosleanv Ami), Bab Graham Rodrigues (Saibachea
Festak), Bab Agnelo (Ostori), and Zoroaster Coelho (Chuk).

A regular at Konkani programmes, when questioned how he considered
the show said: "Konkani programmes put up lately by some went
unattended. It's the attitude of some outfits who have a tendency to
put down their fellow Goans specially the dramatists. I read often
from some of these characters who blame others, but not themselves".

In-between the plays, songs by M. Luis & Leena (Bhuimkamp), Micheal
D'Silva (Amcho Bhavart), Nelson Fernandes (Livrament Saibinn), Seby &
Seby (Novea Kollakorank Sondi Diat), Laurent-Sylvester-Donald
(Morttoch Oxem Ghoddtta), Simon Gonsalves (Adhar) and Micheal D'Silva
(Bus Driver) to the accompaniment of Kuwait's favourite musician
Shahu Almeida provided the music
in his unique style, ably supported by Augusto Morais.

Socorro de Mello, the chief guest and a renowned musician in Kuwait
lauded the conscientious efforts of the people of Utorda in Kuwait
for providing the "Konkani One Act Play Competitions" as a
springboard to unfurl the potential talents of Konkani singers in
Kuwait.

As glaringly evidenced by the introduction of Master Alrich Miranda,
Master Palen D'Costa and Miss Thelma D'Souza - a singing sensation
from Mangalore, this year.

Since 2000, the United Club of Utorda has encouraged the Kuwait-based
Konkani dramatists and singers.

Earlier, Vice President of UCU, Milagres Rodrigues, welcomed the
guests and appreciated their support and patronage for the event.
Socorro de Mello distributed the prizes and was assisted by UCU
member, Kuwaiti's renowned stage dramatist Laurente Pereira and
President of UCU, Chequinho Fernandes.

Said visiting musician, Agnelo Dias, at the end of the
competition: "All three plays were of comparable high standard to
those enacted back in Goa for the Kala Academy competitions".
Agnelo Dias commented on the good work of the organizers, namely
United Club of Utorda and Goan Welfare Society (GWS) and its members.

He was one of the three judges, the others being Konkani singer and
Roney D'Cunha and Rock Soares. Popular Konkani poet Lino Dourado
and Richard Rodrigues compered the event to the delight of the
applauding audience. Lino's traditional 'Amchea Vinchar Tumchea
Zabab" (Our Questions Your Replies) which were based on latest
happenings in Goa and on the Konkani scene, evinced keen interest.

Among the prize winners for the correct responses were Konkani writer
Anthony Correia Pienkar, Lino Fernandes, Maria Rodrigues, and popular
soccer legend on the expatriate Indian community circuit, Cajetan
Godinho.

Ignatius de Xelvon's once again proved that he can deliver the best
as both an actor, writer, director and singer. It's good to see
so many artistes performing, and it is equally true that if more
opportunities are given to them, these talents can create ripples on
both on and off the stage.
