Braz de Parra composes songs with danceable beat riffs
Eccentric lyrics define soundtracks of ‘BLACK’

Music is the most beautiful of arts. And when music is entwined with words, it becomes a perfect melody. The association between a popular film and emotion is a long-established part of the lore of Indian cinema, for filmmakers and fans alike. Running alongside this, and indeed long preceding it, is an equally entrenched association between lyrics, music and emotion.

Right from the first Konkani film 'Sukhi Koni' made in 1949 to films like Mogacho Anvddo, Amchem Noxib, Nirmon, Boglant, Bhuierantlo Munis, Mog ani Moipas, Padri, etc, songs have assumed a much more prominent role in the soundtrack and sound design of feature films. Like their classical precursors, soundtracks, based on a collage of songs, play a vital role in amplifying and inflecting the much desired touching significance to films.

Winner of Best Singer Kala Academy Award in 1989, Braz Rodrigues popularly known as Braz de Parra holds credits for writing the lyrics of ‘BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion’ – the first Konkani E-Cinema scheduled for release in Kuwait on Aug 10, 2007 at Masrah, Hawalli Auditorium.

Many people argue about the importance of lyrics or wordings in songs. Many are staunchly in the ‘lyrics rule’ corner, while many claim to never pay attention to them, saying that they don’t really think lyrics impact their appreciation so long as the voice itself is pleasant.

But in Konkani songs, if the words of a song or voice of the vocalist irritate, chances are that the music isn’t going to win the audience over on its own. And if the music is derivative or uninspired, the lyricist is going to have a hard time saving the day all by his lonesome in the critical land that is the ears of the audience.

It’s turn to get introspective and a bit philosophical about the lyrics in BLACK that has some thoughtful lines specially coined by the soft spoken Braz.

photo Among a genre of top singers based in Kuwait Braz de Parra is known more as a name than seen or heard much. However, the low profiled composer is nothing new to Konkani songs or acting. He has regularly featured on stage right from his childhood. At a very tender age he starred as a child artiste for his first stage appearance in Fernando Bhattkar’s drama ‘Guneanv Konnacho’ in his home-town Parra, North Goa. Catching on to inspiration from his uncle Lawry Rodrigues when he was still in the 9th standard, Braz wrote and directed a drama called ‘Nagounno’ with a full professional caste that included famous artistes such as late Jerry Boy, Jerome de Mapusa, S. Lemos, Marcelino de Betim and legendary singer Young Menezes.
 
Son of famous North Goa playwright and composer Jose Rod and Eliza Rodrigues, Braz de Parra is happily living in Kuwait with wife Cynthia and son Avlon. Working since 1992, Braz was first introduced by famous tiatr star Jose Rod in Kuwait to sing a opening chorus in Mario de Majorda’s drama ‘Sambau’ staged at Keifan Hall in September 1994.

“I have grown up watching my idols Comedian Philip and Jose Rod who are good friends now,” discloses Braz, “I used to dream of acting with them.” 

Before coming to Kuwait, Braz acted in dramas such as ‘Bhim toxem bhat’ of Valente Mascarenhas, ‘Chitrakar’ of Bonaventure D’Pietro, ‘Upkar’ of JoeBoy, ‘Mati’ of Thomas Andrade, etc. In his last drama in Goa in 1989 entitled, ‘Rostad’, Braz had introduced budding singer Carmen Barboza and late Comedian Vitorin.

Significance in the name

Braz is known as Braz de Parra right from a very young age. Braz says, “I wanted to be related to my birthplace. My father, popularly known as Comedian Jose Rod has been my role model. He encouraged me to sing in his drama ‘Mogachem Kazar Atanchea Tempar’ which was written during the Portuguese times but could be staged only after Goa’s independence due to censorship. 
When questioned about the ‘miraculous’ appointment by T-Bush to compose lyrics for BLACK, Braz says, "I never thought I would come this far. Looking back down the years I feel ‘top-of-the-world’ to have written the songs in what is going to be the first Konkani E-Cinema. My only recognition in an audio album is in A.M. Araujo’s ‘Kaido to Kaido’. My close friend in Kuwait, Ambrosio Fernandes from Guirim has always encouraged my talent. And my biggest support has been my wife Cynthia. She persistently gores me to bring out the best. Soon, I have plans to record my own album entitled ‘Avy’ in dedication to one of my closest buddies in life named Avelino who was unfortunate to die at a young age. I also have plans to stage a musical show in Kuwait named ‘Comic Uncle’ for which I will bring in my dad from Goa to sing.”

Composing Technique

“I devise the tune first,” says Braz, “Setting the lyrics is not difficult after that. It’s a God’s gift that I can commit a tune to memory because I am not trained to write musical notes. I can proudly say that my lyrics, composing style and melody are quite unique and unconventional from the standard Goan songs. It’s a great thing that T-Bush noticed my distinct way during my performance at one of the one-act play competitions held in Kuwait and later engaged me to write lyrics for his kept-on-hold film ‘All the Best’ which has 5 songs. Among the pick of the songs in BLACK, ‘Rau, rau, rau, kiteak voit go dhanvon’ set to a unique tune and rhythm is sure to enchant the audience.”

Braz further revealed, “Two affective functions of the lyrics were consistently kept in mind whilst writing the lyrics of BLACK: expressing emotions (of characters) and moods (of scenes), and eliciting and arousing emotions in spectators.”

Lyrical Limitations

“Lyrics in BLACK are evidently pretty significant,” says Braz, “since they are clearly articulated and for the most part dominate the mix of new and old generation. In Konkani history, there is a line of folk and latest songwriters with obviously ‘inimitable’ ambitions, evident in the foregrounding of complex lyrics; here I’m thinking of legendary composers and singers like Kid Boxer, Young Menezes, Alfred Rose, Anthony Mendes, M. Boyer, C. Alvares, Wilfy Rebimbus, Jerome D’ Souza, etc. Sometimes lyrics have ‘theatrical’ significance, but only sometimes; on other occasions, the vocals register a human presence and expressivity like in most M. Boyer’s dramas. For example, the vocal track of ‘Amchem Noxib’ film allows us to grasp catchy lines like ‘Mogan asonk borem, jivit sukhi khorem’ that let your feelings slip – which resonate associatively and of course with the narrative of the film.”

But what happens when a song is worked into the soundtrack of a film?

According to Braz, “If anything, the process of remixing a song’s original sonic balance within that of a film soundtrack tends to displace lyrical content even further. In analyzing the lyrics of BLACK it is all too easy to drift into an analysis which focuses on the characters as well as persona of the cast. To analyze the lyrics per se is rather like examining a film’s script. There is nothing wrong so long as we don’t confuse an artiste with the film and the song-as-performed. The relationship between lyrics, music and image is constantly shifting in a movie more or less overt or subtle ways. So it is for the audience to scrutinize and link the song to the story.”

A singer himself, Braz says, “Typically, I compose songs combining my music tastes and influences, with rhythm as the predominant style. Not all of my songs can be classified as entertaining; I have quieter and other comedy songs too. I always try to have melodious songs; the melodies can then be combined with different style of singing or with any other style. ‘Rau rau, kiteak voit go dhanvon’ is a good example of an original and brilliant work combining melodies with drums and danceable beat riffs. T-Bush has tried to find the right harmony for the songs by fitting the melodies with the most appropriate music rhythm and style. All of my songs in the movie are thus highly experimental. The benchmark was probably set by T-Bush in acquiring a masterpiece of different techniques of musicianship. T-Bush himself has sung a song which will be one of the prime background soundtracks of BLACK. It is my own creativity to invent these inspiring lyrics. But I feel that it is best to let the movie speak. All the songs in the movie are quite unique and I am sure people will take home some of the lyrics from BLACK as they leave the theatre.

On Younger brigade of singers
 
Braz, who has crooned several of his own compositions in dramas, admits that many of the upcoming Goan singers are extremely talented. "Youngsters these days have marvelous voices and they pick up very fast. As they grow up listening to various singers from their very childhood, they are able to sing varied styles beautifully. Hopefully, we will see a new generation of Konkani singers soon."

The singer also believes the young brigade shouldn't shy away from learning classical music. He says, “However, much one sings with typical Goan tunes, it will all be in vain unless one has a distinct, incomparable deviation base. Without that, one cannot sing a spectrum of songs. It's important that singers should have knowledge about different rhythms within our own music. Although I have witnessed the change in techniques right from ‘Nirmon’s Claudia’ to ‘Uloilelim Utram’ of ‘Bhuierantlo Munis’ there are not many variations of Konkani songs in recent years except for the music. I feel we have to change with time. I have high expectations from the songs in BLACK. I hope it will open a new door for further innovations.  Let us see, it all depends on the public reception.”

Speaking further on the soundtracks of BLACK which are sung by Gracy Morais, Comedian Philip, T-Bush and Maggie, Braz says, “The song sung by T-Bush is a song which I enjoyed while writing and I have to give full marks to the musician Norman Cardozo, who breathed life into it," he adds, “This track is high on emotions interspersed with Goan musical arrangements that gives it an exclusive feel. The greatest advantage for the song was the placement in the storyline. The other songs act as a point of linkage for moving the story forward.”

The gentle lyricist further added, “As a songwriter I only had to write what the story demanded. In most circumstances, a song is used as a bridge in the story. There is a sense of humor in every song. When you have such fun songs, they are meant to break the tedium and keep the audience guessing about the next development.”
 
On the sets of BLACK

Apart from the songs, Braz has also acted in the movie alongside his friend and favorite artiste Comedian Philip.

“Shooting was so much fun,” he says, “You know, I had heard how difficult it was for any director to get artistes to act together. But we all had a ball at the sets! There was never any bitterness and jealousy among co-stars that I had heard about. T-Bush is so well planned and yet so spontaneous with his actors.”

Before concluding the interview Braz ascertained, “Eccentric lyrics and exceptional singing style define the tracks of ‘BLACK’, which should take the movie to a different level of popularity.”

Portugal municipality proposes to share projects with MMC

MARGAO, JULY 11 — If only the Margao Municipal accord its approval, aid
could flow from Camara Municipal de Oeiras, Portugal to undertake projects
of mutual benefits for both Margao and Oeiras.
If Fundacaco Cidade de Lisboa is to be believed, Oeiras is one of the
richest Municipalities in Portugal and has a substantial population of Goan
origin.
The Indo-Portuguese Friendship Society, Goa through the offices of Fundacao
Cidade de Lisboa, Goa delegation has received the proposal from the Mayor of
Camara Municipal de Oeiras, Portugal to partner with the Margao Municipal
Council to undertake the projects.
A letter addressed to the Margao Municipal Chairperson by Dr Jorge Renato
Fernandes, Delegate of Fundacao de Lisboa in Goa, says the Indo-Portuguese
Friendship Society, Goa will liaison between the two Municipal bodies to
take up the projects.
Dr Jorge says in the letter that there will be no financial cost implication
on part of the Margao Municipal Council should the Civic body accept the
proposal.
In order to foster friendship and better understanding between the people of
the two partner cities, the Fundacao de Lisboa in Goa has suggested the
following projects which could be undertaken in Goa.
One, the beautification of the city, solid waste management and disposal,
storm water and flood management, gastronomy & food festivals, Portuguese
language promotion including online learning through internet, family and
student exchanges for promotion and better understanding of cultures &
heritages and promotion and exchange between the Portuguese and Goan
cultures.
MMC Chairperson Johnson Fernandes told Herald that he would place the
proposal before the Council for a decision. “It’s for the Council to decide
whether to accept the proposal or not”, he said.

I am not sure how much Portuguese you are really going to learn in Goa in this day and age amongst friends and relatives!   

Fundação oriente could be a small start, as they have some material in their library as well as they might know a couple of tutors who can give you a head start.

Alternatively, you can always learn basic Portuguese for free online at your own home. Check this website and you can get into many other websites through their links page:

‘BLACK’ to revive traditions of Goan music
               -by gasper crasto

Goans, in India, are called a people of music and
dance. Goans made a name for themselves in India and
beyond as ambassadors of music -- both Western and
Indian at ceremonial and religious events. The history
of Goan music can be traced right back to ancient
times. It is said that Goan music encompassed the
human prerequisite from womb to tomb.

Medieval Goan murals portray several examples of
musical instruments accompanied by folk singing. This
tradition has survived in the coastal Indian state,
Goa – a city of sun and sand - down to the present
day. As with other traditional arts and crafts the
requisite skills and finer points of the traditional
music were passed down from one generation to the
next. But of late, the art is dying a slow death.

There is much analysis in this article as related to
T-Bush’s feature film – the first Konkani E-Cinema
entitled ‘BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion’, about what
is wrong, what has changed, and what is inevitable in
this genre of music and musicians.

The feature film scheduled for release on Aug 10, 2007
will see Internationally acclaimed director T-Bush
making an effort to portray the grandeur of this
fading art in a movie which is a sweet, just, humane
and interesting melodrama of wit and emotions that
recapitulates the life of a musician in a Goan
backdrop of traditions and culture. T-Bush has
researched the subject in depth to come up with such a
fantastic portrayal.

Is the schism between traditional and contemporary
deeper than we think?

Sure, there are many curmudgeons who complain about
the navel-gazing, musicians of the current genre. And
many, specially strumming musicians who gripe about
the ‘tradition’.

Before we try to tackle that weighty question, maybe
we should consider the bigger picture of contemporary
music than our forgotten tunes. Apparently traditional
music has been relegated to dinosaur status. According
to the new genre the traditional fad is all but
ancient history.

Is it the latest music really music? Does it matter
and should we care? Let me offer an argument. I am not
out to define music in any academic way though.

There are innumerable written examples of Goan music
although the matching melodies might be generally
lost. The music variety was all the more augmented
when Christian missionaries came to Goa in the wake of
the Portuguese conquest in 1510. In the course of
time, young and budding aficionados were introduced to
the basics of music and the art of solfegio to enable
them to fluently sight-read and play music from the
western musical notation.

Talented youngsters were taught to play the violin,
the mandolin, the vihuela (forerunner of the modern
guitar), the harp and the organ. These instruments
were then used to accompany singers at stage shows and
street plays.

The Jesuits, Dominicans and Augustinians, among the
several religious orders who came to undertake
evangelical work and higher education in Goa,
conducted advanced music classes as did the Royal
Convent of St. Monica for girls.

However, there was a transitional period in Goan
history when playing Goan music itself was deemed not
respectable for scholars or the learned, and the girl
students had to hide their instruments, afraid of
being regarded as female entertainers.

Goan music experienced a renaissance when the country
(Goa, Daman & Diu was a country till 1961) acquired
its own musicians who communicated poetic and
political messages in a popular tradition during peak
Portuguese regime. The songs and dances were
accompanied by a variety of string instruments like
the veena, sarangi and tanpura, woodwinds like the
dholak, ghumot, madlem, kasallem, bansari and zanj
(cymbals). The programs were performed in every
village usually in a sacred spot called devastan or in
a mand (circle.)

Music in Goa spans a very broad range of music, from
Goan and foreign-inspired music to more modern trends
with mixtures of genres, ethnic elements and electric
instruments. In recent years, a wide range of skilled
ensembles have helped to raise the profile of Goan
traditional music both nationally and internationally.

‘Woodwind and brass instruments (flute, clarinet,
saxophone, trumpet, horn, euphonium, tuba, etc) and
percussion devices like the bass and snare drum,
tympani, cymbals, xylophone, gongs, etc, were added in
the early nineteenth century. These instruments began
to be used outdoors in the churchyard as well to play
the reveille (alvorada) in the grey light of dawn on
feast days or after Sunday Mass and Vespers. They also
came to be used for funeral and other pompous marches,
processions, pageants and later for public
entertainment in various cities.’

Over the same period, music of various kinds continued
to have a life of its own. There also emerged folk
songs and dances like the mando, dulpod and dekhnni
through a blending of intrinsically native melodies
with western, mainly Italian harmonic devices.

From the last quarter of the nineteenth century, Goan
musicians were recruited to play for military bands at
different Portuguese colonies and for the British.
Soon, Goans were inducted in into the orchestras
playing classical and light classical music, dance
bands in elite ballrooms, hotels, gymkhanas and clubs
all over India and abroad. During the days of the
silent movies, Goans became the chief providers of
background music played in theatres, and when the
movies became talkies, they became the mainstay of the
orchestras in the film recording studios not only as
sidemen and soloists, but as arrangers, composers and
conductors, albeit under famous Indian music
directors.

Musicians manning the leading big bands and the
several nightclub combos in Bombay alone during the
late sixties were almost exclusively Goans.

By then, however, jazz music had begun to evolve new
forms like progressive jazz, bebop and free forms
using complex polyrhythms, dissonant harmonies, jagged
and atonal melodic structures.

It became an esoteric music for appreciation by other
musicians. Though Goan jazzmen quickly got into the
groove, the music itself had lost its large young
audiences to newly emergent rock and roll, pop and
reggae, which marked a return to simpler rhythm. The
new 'beat' consisted of three or more electrified
guitars, with keyboards, drums and a host of 'techno'
electronic gadgetry, attachments and devices like
synthesisers with a multi- toned palette,
auto-rhythms, auto-vamp, drum machines, strobe lights,
etc.

Goa’s popular music tradition continued into the
twentieth century. Just a generation or two back, the
Western music scene was dominated by classical,
semi-classical and dance music like the tango, rumba,
waltz and polka seen mostly at marriage receptions and
other parties.

Many Goan groups reigned supreme in the 60’s and 70’s
playing violins and a range of other non-electronic
instruments like alto-sax, clarinets, etc. There has
been a rapid transformation in music with 12 string
guitars, frame drums, percussions, etc, which swinged
into bebop and rock and roll that has swept everything
in its path.

A lot of the old, traditional Goan musicians could not
make the transition and fell along the path way
forgotten. Their scores were not needed anymore with
brass and horns replaced with electronically charged
gadgets.

But the music played now, is from people of a
tradition or culture foreign to our own mainstream.
It's the measure of distance between ‘here and now’
and ‘there and then.’ Some of the traditional folk
music is hardly played nowadays, maybe because it
seems not in harmony with the modern generation.

The value, of course, is that in hearing a tune
outside of ourselves -- a music from another time or
place, a song outside of our own skin -- we discover
our connections to a wider realm of humanity. BUT, by
appreciating music ‘from somewhere else’ we do not
understand our own place in the world.

Even dramas and tiatros in recent years -- which are
partly intended to raise historical consciousness
among Goans -- almost always use Western style
background music. Very few dramas have attracted my
attention in this regard.

A number of musicians have emerged in recent years
from music schools like the Kala Academy, Goa College
of Music, Pilar Music School, Solfa Music School
(Mapusa), Maestro Fr. Camilo Xavier School of
Music,and other music schools existing in Goa forming
top most ensembles such as Lynx, Sky High, Forefront,
Seby and the Wings, Black Slades, Purple Rain,
Archies, Status4, Cascades, Syndicate, Big City Band,
`India', etc.

Linear and melodic music of Goan bands was well
received till in recent years with some bands exposing
a new era of electronic noise and lip-sync. Music
enthusiasts fear the real art is being played only on
sequenced beats.
Between ‘then’ and ‘now’, the once popular
traditional, original Goan music is now on a brink of
total extinct. A new series of music is seen appearing
on the horizon: a contrast of sound and noise, art and
reality, beauty and ugliness, sanity and insanity,
originality and banality, sound and silence, abstract
and concrete, communicative and solipsistic, normative
and eccentric.

There’s still a tremendous underground swell of
musicians who have no interest in who or what the
latest pop sensation is.
What is the speech in our music and what is the music
in speech? What is the difference between ugly music
and music that expresses ugliness? How can we identify
musical kitsch and how does it differ from the banal
and clichéd?

Looking at the new musicians fresh from schools, it
appears that the next generation of musicians will
comprise mainly vocalists, guitarists and pianists.
‘In other words, it looks like we are producing the
material for beat-groups only.’

The prospects of having the requisite musicians from
the next generation to stage a full ensemble band of
four saxophones, two trumpets, a trombone with piano,
bass and drums is bleak and the chances of putting
together even modest philharmonic or symphony
orchestra for classical music is very remote.

Like all crazes, however, it is just a matter of time
before the trend in the evolution of music will pass.

We all have our sense of musical taste, of course. No
one is asking that we enjoy everything that enters our
eardrums. And thankfully there are no laws that tell
us how to categorize our personal preferences. So feel
free to define ‘music’ the way you want. Well, open
minds hear better music. The next tune that you hear
in a movie – for a particular soundtrack or while the
dialogues are on will definitely make you listen with
the inner sense. The music that makes you weep or
shout or dance with joy might come from an unexpected
place. Contemplate on the tune. It might just be an
African drummer, a Taiwan flute specialist, a
Maharastrian tabla player - or maybe even a one-man
band.

I thank you for informing me reg. the Contacto Goa programme. I saw it today at 13.00
Some comments:
1. Almost as usual the programme DID not start at 13.00 but some 12 minutes late!! but that I think it is a caracteristic of the Portuguese people. : total lack of punctuality !!
Here is story related to me by a member of the Portuguese  Committe of Historians who had gone to TOQUIO for a meet of Luso Japanese History. Making fun  of his own group he told me: 'The Japanese group would arrive at the site of the meets two minutes before time, ,,,while we arrived twenty minutes later. In the evening we had a dinner party, After the drinks and snacks we were invited to the banquet hall> The Portuguese group being the guests, would rush to it on seeing all the Jap delicacies,The Japs would come later,.,,and find the table almost empty!!"
 
2.The first episode had nothing much for us locals, because it depicted a Goan restaurant like those which we have by the dozens.
3. Dito the second: learning  Portuguese with the Help of a Scrab.( if my  spelling  is correct).having studied Portuguese in the Escola Primaria, I dont think that it is the ideal method ,even though one of the damzels said that within 24 hrs she would speak and write perfect Portuguese!!]
. It appeared to me to be a "doctored' declaration of the girl ...and in English !!
 
4. The third Episode, O yes, just wonderful !! the "Banda da Musica" which we in Goa used to see in our  Processions, weddings,and even...funerals. The last one  which I attended,was that of Vasco Alvares who had given written instructions for it !! Those who knew him will recollect his always jovial personality.
But...one of the musicians said that the "Bandas"were dead after the Portuguese had left. !
True, but not exactly that: the Brass bands vanished from the Goa musical panorama because other forms of music cropped up like musical groups with which they could not compete.
And now, once a year we have the Indian Navy Brass Band giving concerts of Indian and Western Classical Music at the Kala Akademy.IF it comes in Nov,as generally done, I would like to sugggest to you to make an EPISODE of the event.
 
One point which I did not find proper that you should interview Fr. Eufemiano Miranda, parish Priest of Santa Ines INSIDE   the Church, You had done the same with our Vicar of Pangim, fully dressed for the Sunday Eucarist in Portuguese at 10.30.,in the previous series.
One can film  an Eucarist being celebrated, but interviews within the Church , I find objectionable.specially when it had nothing to do about the Curch as such.
 
Besides, you did not give a chance to the poor Vicar to say what he wanted: the camera focussed upon him 3-4 times, but hardly for 2 seconds, and Zoomed to some other subject.
It is things like this, which belonged to our past folclore which I feel the 'contactos" should focus.

Yesterday around 20.50, I went to the TV to see the 21.00 news of NDTV.But as some mts were left I changed to RTPI: another programme about Porto ( repeated today ) was on at the end"

But amanha at what time ?!! Unfortunatelly this is a common feature of RTPI just like that of a announce programe starting later and NOT to the Dot of the time fixed. like BBC, CNN. Goa 365, NTDC. Star news,etc.

Hello Milind,

Just a casual question: the Indian films that are going to be screened in this course and on which discussions are going to be based - are they mostly the normal Bollywood types? If so, do you really think that would be REAL film appreciation? Most of these films are a joke and are produced for the uneducated Indian masses, hardly have any story with substance and it is all about colours, dance and weird special effects that hardly warrants any educated person to attend these, leave alone 'appreciating' these! So thus I wonder, who are the type of people that you mention are already in your waiting list? Surely you can advertise to them directly, can't you, if you claim you already have a long waiting list?

I hope you can elaborate more about your courses in your advertising emails. Many 'citizens of Goa' already have people who know how to appreciate films, but they like to watch good quality films... which warrant appreciation but unfortunately are hardly screened in Goa.

opportunity to gain an overview in the field of Film Appreciation
through lectures combined with informal discussion periods.
Admission is open to all; age and qualifications no bar, including
film critics, journalists, film researchers, Govt. officials
handling films and others interested in film studies.

Some of the topics to be discussed will include elements of film
appreciation, history and language of cinema, film and traditional
art forms, art v/s commercial cinema, changing technology of cinema,
government policies and so on.

Course details:
The course will be held at The Entertainment Society of Goa, Old GMC

* A three-day Global Goan Youth Convention in Lisbon will deliberate on `FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD,' while four Goan artists showcase a collection of 15 paintings at the `Simbiose Indo-Portuguesa de Artes' exhibition at Casa de Goa, Lisbon, June 15-17, 2007.
 
 
 
A global Goan convention -- intended to bring together Goans from all over the world to discuss issues of common interest – will be held at Casa de Goa, Lisbon, Portugal from June 15-17, 2007.
Marking the 20th anniversary of its establishment in Lisbon, Casa de Goa intends to celebrate the many positive contributions of global Goans in the field of fine arts, literature, music, media, education.   Aiming to reinforce second and third generation Goans to keep Goan culture alive in their respective professions and places of residence, the convention which is spread over three days will set into motion interactive dialogues, presentations and discussions in an effort to build cultural bridges between Portugal and India.
Adding an element of innovation to the convention is an art exhibition organized by Goa's media and entertainment personality Ms Ethel Da Costa at Casa de Goa, Portugal. The three-day first of its kind exhibition titled `Simbiose Indo-Portuguesa de Artes' will present a multi-media collection of 15 artworks showcasing the talent of young Goan artists: Chandan Bandekar, Franco Fernandes, Nixon Fernandes and Prasad Pankar.
Says Ms Da Costa,  "The art exhibition will build bridges across Portugal and Goa, as an initiative to take art, culture and the performing arts across the borders.  It sets the ball rolling for many more international creative pursuits in the near future."
The exhibition is supported through the generous patronage of Goan industrialist Shri Deepak Bandekar and Shri Vishwajit Rane. May their tribe increase.

initiative is intended to be a forward movement in promoting film
culture in Goa. The workshop will serve as a channel for students,
common man, film enthusiast, film journalist, mass communication and
theatre students and the people of Goa as an introduction into the
various aspects of film and television media.
Course outline:

The course will consist of an intensive three-day programme
delivered by ex-Dean of FTII (Film & Television Institute of India,
Pune) Shri Samar Nakhate. Participants will be offered an excellent
opportunity to gain an overview in the field of Film Appreciation
through lectures combined with informal discussion periods.
Admission is open to all; age and qualifications no bar, including
film critics, journalists, film researchers, Govt. officials
handling films and others interested in film studies.
Some of the topics to be discussed will include elements of film
appreciation, history and language of cinema, film and traditional
art forms, art v/s commercial cinema, changing technology of cinema,
government policies and so on.
Course details:

The course will be held at The Entertainment Society of Goa, Old GMC
Heritage Precinct, D.B.Marg, Panjim. The course is available for a
fee of Rs 600, which will include lunch and tea/coffee on all three
days. Seats will be booked on first-come-first-basis for a maximum
of 45 participants only.

Fish and fishing industry in Goa

Does the fish curry and feni combination give the Goans a happy and contented personality… May be. Like in any seashore country, Goa and fish are inseperable from each other. Everyday before leaving for work, every Goan instinctively rushes to the local market to buy the fresh fish. Sardines, Tuna, Mackerel, Kingfish, Ribbon, Pomfret, Bombay deck, the list is endless. Prawns, crabs, mussels, lobsters, add to the huge variety of seafood eaten by the local population.

To feed this large market of fish eaters and also to export to other states, large fleets of mechanized boats leave the shore everyday. Earlier there were only the traditional canoes used by the Ramponkars, who are fishermen by caste. Now there are various types of fishing boats going into deep sea and also into the estuaries. Mechanised purse-seine boats, deep-sea trawling, Traditional canoes go out to the Arabian Sea, throughout the year except during monsoon. Now the government has stipulated a period of recess during the monsoon from 31st May to 25th July. Diverse variety of fish like the Tuna(Bokodo), Sardine(Taarle), Mackerel(Bangado), Kingfish(Visvon), Ribbon fish(Baalo) and Prawn(Sungat) are caught in the Konkan coast. (names in bracket are in Konkani)

Fishing boats
There are many types of fishing boats varying in size from open boats, powered by outboard engines to huge factory ships, which can not only do deep sea fishing, but also process the catch. Major classifications are Traditional boats with or without sail, open boats fitted with outboard motors, mechanized trawlers with storage and towing capabilities and purse-seine boats with deep-sea capability. Traditional boats are still used for fishing by local Ramponkars who have been catching fish in Konkan coast since centuries. Though most of them still do fishing in the traditional method, some of them have modernized themselves by fitting a Yamaha outboard motor to their wooden canoes.

A mechanised trawler means a vessel fitted with propeller for towing and pulls a bag net through the water to catch fish. Most of the mechanized trawlers are built in Honnavar and Karwar in the neighbouring state of Karnataka and interestingly most of the fish catch goes back to these ports. Each boat may cost around 22 to 25 lakh including the huge net which itself costs 6 lakh. Finance companies like the Madgaon Urban Cooperative or Bicholim Urban Cooperative banks and many nationalized banks give loans for fishermen to build such boats.

The fish catch is mostly exported to states like Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra, from the wholesale market in Madgaon and also from Panaji and Betul. The three major fishing ports in Panjim, Vasco and Betul unload tons of fish and other sea produce everyday to be packed and exported to neighbouring states and also abroad. Other than these there are minor fishing jetties in Chapora, Cortalim and Canacona. This year nearly 172 boats were operating from the large Vasco fishing port, of which 35 of them go deep-sea fishing and 65 boats were purse seine. This jetty placed precariously between the Indian Oil Depot and the Mormugao Harbour is managed by the Goa Boat Owners Association and owned by the Mormugao Port Trust.

But in the recent years the fish catch has gone down not only in Goa, but also in the entire Konkan coast. The fishermen attribute this to the foreign deep sea trawlers who fish in the international waters, but regularly venture into Indian territory. But the real reason might be over exploitation of the fish resources since the introduction of mechanized trawlers. Now that the Supreme Court has ruled that the 55 day ban during monsoon should be adhered, the situation might improve in the coming years.

Casa de Goa, in Lisbon, intends to hold a CONVENTION bringing together Goans

from all over the world to spend a weekend in Portugal discussing issues of
common interest. We wish to celebrate the many positive contributions Goans
have made to the countries in which they have lived for many years and where

their children were born and brought up.


1. Dates: 15th June/ 17th June 2007

• To celebrate the Goan Diaspora and the contributions to the societies in
which we live

• To reinforce second and third generation Goans in their efforts to keep
Goan culture alive

We would be very glad if some of the participants would be willing to make
presentations in order to share their creative experiences in fields like:

• entrepreneurship

• information technologies
• volunteering


We are not a research institution and therefore we do not wish to promote an

academic or scientific event. What we really want is to organise an
interactive
dialogue to share our achievements, on one hand, and to encourage our

and grandchildren to hold the torch of "Goanity" alive in the future
whatever that
might mean in different economic, social and cultural contexts.

Production Engineer (with Industrial Training). Presently working as a
consultant in the field of Waste Management at the Corporation of the City
of Panjim where he implemented systems to reduce landfill waste by 40%.
Volunteer for US based NGO and in environmental issues, wildlife and
computers. Runs and manages GreenGoa - an environmental group of 150+
members and WildGoa – a wildlife group of 350+ members.


Rene Barreto

Promoter of the World Goa Day celebrations that have become an annual event
in all Goan communities around the world. A strong believer in Goan Unity,
he has enormously helped establish the Alliance of Goan Organisations. Was
amongst the Six Goans that were honoured for their outstanding contribution
in different fields by a US based community development organisation Goa
Sudharop Community Development Inc, an NGO working for the development of
Goa and Goans.



Literature

Victor Rangel-Ribeiro

Born in Porvorim, in 1925. Settled in the US since 1956.
Written extensively on Goan subjects during professional writing career both
in Bombay and in the US. First novel Tivolem won an award in the US, in 1998
and was named one of the twenty best first novels to be published that year.
Short story collection Loving Ayesha also includes several stories with a
Goan theme. Currently editing The Goa Book.


Valentino Viegas

Historian. Till his recent retirement, he was the head of an information and
documentation service in the General Directorate for Health, in Lisbon. 7
books published, among which As Políticas Portuguesas na Índia e o Foral de
Goa, as well as many articles in scientific and non-scientific journals and
newspapers.


Entrepreneurship

Bruno Gomes

Settled in Switzerland.
Works as SR Contract Buyer at Johnson and Johnson. Formerly Strategic
Purchasing Manager and Senior Buyer for EMEA.
Negotiator of procurement and service contracts.
His paper will be dedicated to the risk and success of entrepreneurship. He
wishes to share a message with young Goans as to how they can build a

Hilda Frias Rodrigues

Degree in Art History and a Master's degree in Art, Heritage and
Restoration. Working on her PhD in Modern Art. Scholar of the Oriente
Foundation between 1995 and 1997. Has written books, among which Goa. A Arte
dos Púlpitos, articles and research papers. University lecturer since 2000.


Her presentation will be dedicated to the intercultural components of
religious art.

Welcome Dinner (15th June)



It will be held at Lotus Crest Quinta dos Mascarenhas, a very beautiful
setting in Palmela, about an hour away from Lisbon.

We will provide transportation. It will be a very pleasant evening with good
food, good music by Casa de Goa’s group Ekvât and excellent company.

We need to have our opening ceremony earlier than expected so as to get to
Palmela in daylight and have the time to stroll round the farm and the lake.
We think the adequate time would be round 4 P.M. and therefore you need to
book your flights to be here in time.

Our farewell dinner will be a Sardinhada (a meal of grilled sardines and
meat, sals and good portuguese wine) in Casa de Goa’s terrace. It is an
usual event, that we hold every year, at the end of June, to celebrate the
popular saints (St. John, St. Paul and St. Peter). This time, we will have
it a little earlier so that we have another opportunity to socialize with
our guests from abroad.

Parallel events:

Ethel da Costa, from Goa is trying to bring an exhibition of contemporary
painters from Goa, to be on display at the time of the Convention.

We are also planning to have an on going DVD show, since some participants
wish to bring them for their presentations and they could be also be seen
during the evening or during the breaks.

Please do bring photographs in any way connected to the themes for our photo
exhibition.


Outings and sight seeing

Our trip to Fatima, on the 17th morning, will also include some very well
known caves.


On the 18th, if we have a minimum of 40 participants, a travel agency is
ready to organise an entire day's visit to some of the most famous landmarks
and monuments in Lisbon and Sintra.

A brief overview of the origin, nature and aims

Ø the “Goan House” is the Goan association in Lisbon, launched in 1989,
following the efforts of a handful of 1st generation Goan migrants who had,
for a long time, felt the need to join efforts in order to preserve Goan
culture and what is now entitled “goanity”.


Ø The original statutes and internal functioning rules were reviewed in
January 2003 but the statement of mission remained the same. Casa de Goa is
a public utility non-profit institution with neither political or party
affiliation nor religious option. It has an open membership, made up of
Goans and their families living in Portugal or abroad and Portuguese people
in some way connected to Goa

Ø Relevant aims – preservation of cultural identity, specially by 2nd and
3rd generation Goans; collaboration with Portuguese, Indian and other bodies
interested in the research and dissemination of the cultures of Goa, Damão
and Diu; promotion of cultural and recreational activities for our members
and open to the public. IN SHORT: building bridges between Portugal and
India.

Domnic Peter Francis Fernandes is the Internet's find. Since 2003,
when he began penning his thoughts in cyberspace, he never quite
stopped.

What would you say when a man in his fifties, busy at work in the hot
desert sands of Saudi Arabia, suddenly discovers his talent to jot
down amazingly detailed pen-portraits of the Goa that was
half-a-century ago?

As he wrote, Domnic got rave reviews. His work was met with
appreciative acknowledgment, and ever so many email messages telling
him just how meaningful his writing was. Via cyberspace, his
pen-sketches have already helped thousands understand and appreciate
their own relationship with this tiny but significant region of South
Asia.

Now, Domnic's labour of love takes on a paper-and-ink existence and a
reality that goes beyond the virtual world.

Domnic has been egged on to write a book, and the product is in your
hands. As he explains, "These articles are my personal experiences.
They tell the story of the Goa I knew. You would find many set around
Bardez, in the central Goan coastal area, and sometimes the narration
pointedly refers to my home-village of Anjuna. But, I feel, and you
might agree, these stories also paint a wider picture of far-reaching
social change taking place in Goa over a half-century.

Born in 1947, Domnic Fernandes grew up in Anjuna in the former
Portuguese colony of Goa, on the Indian west coast. Since 1981, he has
worked at the College Preparatory Program of Saudi Aramco in Dhahran,
Saudi Arabia, as advisor (trainees)-cum-chief registrar.

In the other roles he played in life, good-natured Domnic worked at
the Goa Secretariat (1967-71) and was manager of Baqer Furnishings in
Bahrain (1972-80). He was also a leading Konkani stage actor in
Bahrain, and was actively involved with the Young Goans Sports Club in
the Seventies, that included serving as its General Secretary.

He is well-versed in Konkani, English, Portuguese, French and Hindi,
and is a Konkani writer.

What sets Domnic apart is his amazing memory, his eye for detail, and
a willingness to painstakingly share what he knows about yesterday's
Goa.

Domnic's narrations surprised so many of his readers in cyberspace precisely
because of his ability to recall the finer details about an important
period in Goan history. Unlike many other writers, he tells the Goa
story, warts and all, and doesn't simply romanticise the "good old
days".

Domnic loves spending his holidays with his wife Jyothi, daughter
Valene and son Alden, both in the knowledge township of Udupi in
scenic coastal Karnataka, and surely in the Goa he deeply feels for.

Caros amigos,
Não sou um “reporter”,mas gosto de informar os meus amigos tudo quanto de bom se passa nesta minha Terra : GOA.
Já lá vão alguns meses, tivemos em Goa, uma noticia muito triste: falecera aquele que pode ser chamado o “Principe dos Poetas Goeses”, um desses “génios da nossa Raça”, citando, uma vez mais, essa frase de Francisco Correia Afonso. Esse foi o titulo que ele ganhara num concurso de poetas goeses organizado pelo Clube Nacional de Pangim.
MANOHAR SARDESAI  era o seu nome.Não vos vou dar os dados bio-bibligráficos dessa Personalidade distinta cujas virtudes foram inúmeras.Tudo isso podereis vir a ler quando o que se segue se realizar.Mas...se estiverem com pressa, é so por o seu nome na Google..e ai terão uma cascata de referencias:
 
Um grupo de amigos e admiradores do falecido poeta Manohar Sardesai resolveu recordar a sua poesia para a posteridade, publicando um livro trilingue com todas as poesias possivelmente coligidas.
 
O grupo é composto dos seguintes:
 
1. Em Goa:D. Aurora Couto,( escritora goesa  internacionalmente conhecida),  Dr. Sergio Mascarenhas e Almeida( Director da F.O.-Goa,)   Pe. Joaquim Loiola Pereira,Joaquim Correia Afonso,Pe.Vasco do Rego S.J.,Jose e Madalena VelhoPereira,, Umesh SarDesai ( filho do Poeta ) e Fernando do Rego .
 
2.Fora de Goa: Amilcar da Costa( Bruxelas),Berardo Pinto Pereira( Trindade e Tobago),Paulo Colaco Dias   (Londres),Constantino Xavier( Lisboa- Nova Delhi)- MariaVirginia Bras Gomes, Jorge Noronha e Mário Viegas em Lisboa.
 
A primeira parte do livro são versos escritos em concanim pelo Poeta e traduzidos para portugues por Jorge Noronha, Pe. Joaquim Loiola Pereira, Pe. Vasco do Rego e ainda Alberto Noronha, que veio a falecer uns meses atrás , e outros. A segunda são versos originais em ingles e a terceira , versos originais em Frances.
O livro terà um Prefácio da autoria da D. Aurora Couto( traduzido para portugues por Jorge Noronha e para Frances pela Dra. Anarudha Wagle, Prof.a de Frances  na Faculdade das Lingua Latinas na Univ. de Goa)
 
O livro inclue um poema verdadeiramente sensacional do Poeta:...um “Fado” em concani.!! O primeiro Fado composto numa  lingua estrangeira .!!
A sua génese foi esta: um grupo da” Konkani Basha Mandal”( uma asssociação dedicada ao desenvolvimento da lingua concani)  estava de caminho num autocarro para Kharwar ( sul de Goa  no Estado visinho)  para uma conferencia da mesma. A certas alturas, no próprio autocarro, Manohar Sardesai pediu ao Jose Velho Pereira (conhecido cantor goes que com o seu conjunto musical acompanhava o grupo), que tocasse um fado na sua guitarra, o que ele fez com o muito conhecido  Tudo isto é fado”.
.
 Enquando ele o fazia, MS escrevinhava algo num papel,e assim que o José terminou, ofereceu-o. Era um Fado ao qual dera o nome de “Sopon”( sonho).!! 
 De facto, os dois muito conhecidos conjuntos musicais  dos  goeses em Portugal, o “Ekvat” e o “Surya”poderiam inclui-lo nos seus recitais como canto inicial,  um ‘signature tune”, como se diz em ingles, da sua goanidade aliada à sua portugalidade.
Para vosso deleite, ele vai pelo Anexo...mas em concani que nem todos perceberão.Para a sua tradução...aguardem o livro !!
 
Aproveitando da estadia do Jorge Noronha em Goa, alguns do grupo que podiam, assistiram a uma reunião em minha casa .Afim de se criar uma atmosfera “manohariana”, oUmseh, filho do poeta, cantou uma das muitas canções devocionais do seu pai e  José Velho Pereira , o “Sopon”.Foram discutidos vários assuntos,incluindo a publicação do livro em Lisboa no próximo futuro ficando o grupo de Lisboa a cargo dela.
Possivelmente com um lançamento na Casa de Goa que já projectava, segundo me consta, ter uma sessão em sua homenagem e o seu retrato na” Galeria de Goeses Ilustres”.
Ficou resolvido também que o livro levaria um triplo nome:” My Song...O meu canto....Ma chanson”.O titulo inicial de “My Song’ fora sugerido, a pedido dos organizadores, pela familia do Poeta e foi aprovado por unanimidade.A sua tradução para portugues fora feita como “A minha canção”, mas o Dr. Sergio Mascarenhas fez-nos ver que “O meu Canto” era mais significativo e este titulo foi também aprovado por unanimidade
A tertúlia terminou com uma canção do seu pai, pelo Umesh Sardesai e seguido doutras pelo Pe. Joaquim Loiola Pereira, também da autoria do  Manohar..
 
Uns dias mais tarde, sucedeu eu ir para uma visita   casual ao meu visinho Sr. Percival Noronha. Ele não precisa de apresentação, pois tem-se tornado internacionalmente conhecido como sendo das poucas fontes da História indo-portuguesa, junto com Carmo de Azavedo , Aleixo Costa e Alberto Noronha,que já estão nos Céus.
Como funcionário público trabalhou tanto no regime portugues como no actual, e sendo uma pessoa muito conhecedora da história de Goa,era pedido pelo Governo para servir de guia aos V.I.Ps nas suas visitas a Velha Goa como sucedeu recentemente quando o Dr. Cavaco e Silva , o Pres da República de Portugal, esteve em Goa.
 
A par disso, é Presidente da Sociedade Astronómica da India( ramo de Goa) e membro do  Executivo da “INDIAN HERITAGE SOCIETY - Goa Chapter”.Em amena conversa  contei-lhe o plano em vista.
Percival entusiasmou-se com a idea e revelou-me  que a  mesma “I.H.S.” poderia tomar a responsabilidade completa da edição, publicação e venda do projectado livro.!!
Saltei de júbilo!  Era um “Sopon” que nenhum  de nós, organizadores, tinha tido!
Em nova reunião, em casa do Percival com assistencia do Jorge Noronha, Umesh Sardesai e eu, ele  e na presença do Dr. Damador Bousuló, um dos tres membros do Executivo da “I.H.S.” (sendo o terceiro o Sr. Peres da Costa de Curtorim) deu-nos os detalhes dos seus   planos
A “I.H.S” publicaria o livro em mil cópias.
 O trabalho da confeção final do livro seria feito por Jorge Noronha em Lisboa e Fernando do Rego em Goa até meados de Setembro.Tudo correndo segundo os planos, o livro seria lançado nos principios de 2008, numa sessão a ser planeada, em Pangim. Um outro lançamento seria organizado pelo grupo de Lisboa.
 
Asssim se hade realizar o Fado “SONHO” de Manohar Sardesai...que ele nunca teria sonhado: um livro trilingue a correr pelo Mundo fora,  levando a todos os  seus cantos,os ’Cantos” do “Muruoni” goes( “roubando” o titulo do livro do recem falecido Alberto Noronha:”Onde o Muruoni canta” sendo o “Muruoni’ uma ave cantora de Goa)
 Segundo o que o Sr. Percival me disse, poderiamos  até começar a aceitar ordens para a compra do livro com dois centros para isso:

E mais, que os meus Recipientes gostarão de saber: por uma carta particular aos membros da Comissao ,eu os informara que este livro estava em projecto e um deles, também um poeta goes, residente em Trindade, o Berardo Pinto Pereira, numa carta recebida ontem, faz um “advance booking” dizendo que vem a Goa em Maio  e paga o preço do livro MESMO  que ele não seja publicado até lá...Estou mesmo a ver...ou imaginar(?) que a “Indian Heritage Society- Goa Chapter” terá de fazer mais uma edição de mil cópias do livro.

Depois do seu falecimento, a familia encontrou nos seus arquivos perto de trezentos poemas até cá inéditos e que agora vão ser publicados pela “ Konkani Akademy” em original devanagárico.

Não sou um “reporter”,mas gosto de informar os meus amigos tudo quanto de bom se passa nesta minha Terra : GOA.
Já lá vão alguns meses, tivemos em Goa, uma noticia muito triste: falecera aquele que pode ser chamado o “Principe dos Poetas Goeses”, um desses “génios da nossa Raça”, citando, uma vez mais, essa frase de Francisco Correia Afonso. Esse foi o titulo que ele ganhara num concurso de poetas goeses organizado pelo Clube Nacional de Pangim.
MANOHAR SARDESAI  era o seu nome.Não vos vou dar os dados bio-bibligráficos dessa Personalidade distinta cujas virtudes foram inúmeras.Tudo isso podereis vir a ler quando o que se segue se realizar.Mas...se estiverem com pressa, é so por o seu nome na Google..e ai terão uma cascata de referencias:
 
Um grupo de amigos e admiradores do falecido poeta Manohar Sardesai resolveu recordar a sua poesia para a posteridade, publicando um livro trilingue com todas as poesias possivelmente coligidas.
 
O grupo é composto dos seguintes:
 
1. Em Goa:D. Aurora Couto,( escritora goesa  internacionalmente conhecida),  Dr. Sergio Mascarenhas e Almeida( Director da F.O.-Goa,)   Pe. Joaquim Loiola Pereira,Joaquim Correia Afonso,Pe.Vasco do Rego S.J.,Jose e Madalena VelhoPereira,, Umesh SarDesai ( filho do Poeta ) e Fernando do Rego .
 
2.Fora de Goa: Amilcar da Costa( Bruxelas),Berardo Pinto Pereira( Trindade e Tobago),Paulo Colaco Dias   (Londres),Constantino Xavier( Lisboa- Nova Delhi)- MariaVirginia Bras Gomes, Jorge Noronha e Mário Viegas em Lisboa.
 
A primeira parte do livro são versos escritos em concanim pelo Poeta e traduzidos para portugues por Jorge Noronha, Pe. Joaquim Loiola Pereira, Pe. Vasco do Rego e ainda Alberto Noronha, que veio a falecer uns meses atrás , e outros. A segunda são versos originais em ingles e a terceira , versos originais em Frances.
O livro terà um Prefácio da autoria da D. Aurora Couto( traduzido para portugues por Jorge Noronha e para Frances pela Dra. Anarudha Wagle, Prof.a de Frances  na Faculdade das Lingua Latinas na Univ. de Goa)
 
O livro inclue um poema verdadeiramente sensacional do Poeta:...um “Fado” em concani.!! O primeiro Fado composto numa  lingua estrangeira .!!
A sua génese foi esta: um grupo da” Konkani Basha Mandal”( uma asssociação dedicada ao desenvolvimento da lingua concani)  estava de caminho num autocarro para Kharwar ( sul de Goa  no Estado visinho)  para uma conferencia da mesma. A certas alturas, no próprio autocarro, Manohar Sardesai pediu ao Jose Velho Pereira (conhecido cantor goes que com o seu conjunto musical acompanhava o grupo), que tocasse um fado na sua guitarra, o que ele fez com o muito conhecido  Tudo isto é fado”.

 Enquando ele o fazia, MS escrevinhava algo num papel,e assim que o José terminou, ofereceu-o. Era um Fado ao qual dera o nome de “Sopon”( sonho).!! 
 De facto, os dois muito conhecidos conjuntos musicais  dos  goeses em Portugal, o “Ekvat” e o “Surya”poderiam inclui-lo nos seus recitais como canto inicial,  um ‘signature tune”, como se diz em ingles, da sua goanidade aliada à sua portugalidade.
Para vosso deleite, ele vai pelo Anexo...mas em concani que nem todos perceberão.Para a sua tradução...aguardem o livro !!
 
Aproveitando da estadia do Jorge Noronha em Goa, alguns do grupo que podiam, assistiram a uma reunião em minha casa .Afim de se criar uma atmosfera “manohariana”, oUmseh, filho do poeta, cantou uma das muitas canções devocionais do seu pai e  José Velho Pereira , o “Sopon”.Foram discutidos vários assuntos,incluindo a publicação do livro em Lisboa no próximo futuro ficando o grupo de Lisboa a cargo dela.
Possivelmente com um lançamento na Casa de Goa que já projectava, segundo me consta, ter uma sessão em sua homenagem e o seu retrato na” Galeria de Goeses Ilustres”.
Ficou resolvido também que o livro levaria um triplo nome:” My Song...O meu canto....Ma chanson”.O titulo inicial de “My Song’ fora sugerido, a pedido dos organizadores, pela familia do Poeta e foi aprovado por unanimidade.A sua tradução para portugues fora feita como “A minha canção”, mas o Dr. Sergio Mascarenhas fez-nos ver que “O meu Canto” era mais significativo e este titulo foi também aprovado por unanimidade
A tertúlia terminou com uma canção do seu pai, pelo Umesh Sardesai e seguido doutras pelo Pe. Joaquim Loiola Pereira, também da autoria do  Manohar..
 
Uns dias mais tarde, sucedeu eu ir para uma visita   casual ao meu visinho Sr. Percival Noronha. Ele não precisa de apresentação, pois tem-se tornado internacionalmente conhecido como sendo das poucas fontes da História indo-portuguesa, junto com Carmo de Azavedo , Aleixo Costa e Alberto Noronha,que já estão nos Céus.
Como funcionário público trabalhou tanto no regime portugues como no actual, e sendo uma pessoa muito conhecedora da história de Goa,era pedido pelo Governo para servir de guia aos V.I.Ps nas suas visitas a Velha Goa como sucedeu recentemente quando o Dr. Cavaco e Silva , o Pres da República de Portugal, esteve em Goa.
 
A par disso, é Presidente da Sociedade Astronómica da India( ramo de Goa) e membro do  Executivo da “INDIAN HERITAGE SOCIETY - Goa Chapter”.Em amena conversa  contei-lhe o plano em vista.
Percival entusiasmou-se com a idea e revelou-me  que a  mesma “I.H.S.” poderia tomar a responsabilidade completa da edição, publicação e venda do projectado livro.!!
Saltei de júbilo!  Era um “Sopon” que nenhum  de nós, organizadores, tinha tido!
Em nova reunião, em casa do Percival com assistencia do Jorge Noronha, Umesh Sardesai e eu, ele  e na presença do Dr. Damador Bousuló, um dos tres membros do Executivo da “I.H.S.” (sendo o terceiro o Sr. Peres da Costa de Curtorim) deu-nos os detalhes dos seus   planos
A “I.H.S” publicaria o livro em mil cópias.
 O trabalho da confeção final do livro seria feito por Jorge Noronha em Lisboa e Fernando do Rego em Goa até meados de Setembro.Tudo correndo segundo os planos, o livro seria lançado nos principios de 2008, numa sessão a ser planeada, em Pangim. Um outro lançamento seria organizado pelo grupo de Lisboa.
 
Asssim se hade realizar o Fado “SONHO” de Manohar Sardesai...que ele nunca teria sonhado: um livro trilingue a correr pelo Mundo fora,  levando a todos os  seus cantos,os ’Cantos” do “Muruoni” goes( “roubando” o titulo do livro do recem falecido Alberto Noronha:”Onde o Muruoni canta” sendo o “Muruoni’ uma ave cantora de Goa)

E mais, que os meus Recipientes gostarão de saber: por uma carta particular aos membros da Comissao ,eu os informara que este livro estava em projecto e um deles, também um poeta goes, residente em Trindade, o Berardo Pinto Pereira, numa carta recebida ontem, faz um “advance booking” dizendo que vem a Goa em Maio  e paga o preço do livro MESMO  que ele não seja publicado até lá...Estou mesmo a ver...ou imaginar(?) que a “Indian Heritage Society- Goa Chapter” terá de fazer mais uma edição de mil cópias do livro.
 
Os meus  leitores também gostarão de saber que a publicação dos poemas do Manohar não se limita à esta iniciativa. Depois do seu falecimento, a familia encontrou nos seus arquivos perto de trezentos poemas até cá inéditos e que agora vão ser publicados pela “ Konkani Akademy” em original devanagárico.

Taleigao Chess Acdemy (TCA)was formed in 2006 and its governing body
is  President:Madhu savoiverekar, Secretary:Shrikant Barve, Tresurer:
Ganesh Manerkar. Our main aims are: 1.To promote chess as learning
tool.
2.To promote Chess at Pre Primary and Primary level in Goa.
By means of organizing
      1. Chess Coaching Classes for children, parents, teachers etc.
      2. Chess Tournaments for Children.
      3. Exhibition of Chess Posters at Public Places.
      4. Holding seminars on Chess.
      5. Encouraging influential people to create Chess Parks.
We run regular chess coching classes for children in a 1230 sq feet
flat at Dynasty Manor, nr Bank of India, Odlembhat, Taleigao-Goa. In
last 10 months we have organised 3 All Goa Chess Tournaments for
children and 10 regular monthly chess tournaments for our members. Two
Seminars on Chess and many chess poster exibitions. Free chess
coaching for teachers and parents.

We are the first to hold Primary School students chess Championship in
Goa. It was held in the month of August 19/20 2006 year at prestigious
INOX Multiples, Panaji. It was a roaring success.

TCA is affiliated to Goa State Chess Association(GSCA) who is
affiliated to All India Chess Federation(AICF). AICF is associated
with FIDE world Chess governing Body.


APPEAL
TO PROMOTE CHESS AS EDUCATIONAL TOOL
We are making a Documentary on "Chess as Educational Tool". This
documentary will be ready by April 30 and CD's of this documentery
will be given to over 1200 Educatioanl Institutions in Goa. It will be
played at First Parent Teachears association (PTA) meet for Academic
year 07/08 in all the schools of Goa.
Documentary will include debate on "Chess in Education" by prominant
educationist Prof. Ramesh Sapre, Prof. Agusto Pinto, Dr. Mita Majumdar
Clinical Phycologist at IPBH Bambolim, Senior session judge Anuja
Probhudesai, NIO Scientist Sujata Kaisary and many other , one act
play on "Chess" as theme etc.

Goa State Chess Association has decided to allocate Under 11 Selection
Chess Tournament to Taleigao Chess Academy. First Two boys and two
girls will be selected from this tournament will represent Goa for
Under Eleven National Chess Tournament 2007.
This tournament will be held at Manvins Hotel, Near Municipal Garden,
Panaji on 20,21,22,23 April 2007.
To promote chess throughout Goa We have decided to give prizes to each
one of 11 talukas of Goa. There will be at least 74+ Prizes in this
tournament. Each one of 11 talukas from Goa will get 6 prizes and
there will be additional 8 to 20 Prizes.

We know that chess will help our young minds.

You may contribute to this cause by way of suggestions as also
financial contribution as under

E mais, que os meus Recipientes gostarão de saber: por uma carta particular aos membros da Comissao ,eu os informara que este livro estava em projecto e um deles, também um poeta goes, residente em Trindade, o Berardo Pinto Pereira, numa carta recebida ontem, faz um “advance booking” dizendo que vem a Goa em Maio  e paga o preço do livro MESMO  que ele não seja publicado até lá...Estou mesmo a ver...ou imaginar(?) que a “Indian Heritage Society- Goa Chapter” terá de fazer mais uma edição de mil cópias do livro.
 
Os meus  leitores também gostarão de saber que a publicação dos poemas do Manohar não se limita à esta iniciativa. Depois do seu falecimento, a familia encontrou nos seus arquivos perto de trezentos poemas até cá inéditos e que agora vão ser publicados pela “ Konkani Akademy” em original devanagárico.
 
 Era favor enviar esta noticia aos vossos próprios amigos Juntemos os nossos esforços para  que Manohar Sardesai seja conhecido com uma “pérola” da literatura goesa

For those of you who understand Portuguese language, you may find interesting
the contributions of our own Goan Constantino Xavier, who is based in New Delhi
and is a correspondent for the Portuguese main weekly Expresso.

In January this year, following the official visit of Prof. Dr. Anibal Cavaco
Silva (President of the Republic of Portugal) to Goa, Constantino Xavier
accompanied Luisa Meireles (Expresso reporter) and Luis Carvalho (Expresso
Photographer) to Goa and this was the report which was published on the
Portuguese main weekly Expresso, Revista Única, 27 Jan. 07, edição 1787.

The report is available on Expresso site but only for those subscribed to the
weekly.

In connection with the most interesting discussion about the alleged
statement from Nehru describing Goans as Ayas, Butlers and Cooks, (ABC), I
would like to make you all aware of the recent interview given by General
Ramalho Eanes (President of the Portuguese Republic from 1976 to 1986) to
the main Portuguese weekly Expresso (http://www.expresso.pt) on the 27th Jan
2007.

It is interesting to note how opinions can be so different.

In a recent interview to Expresso, General Ramalho Eanes and ex-President of
the Portuguese Republic is of the opinion that Goa was an unique case in the
Portuguese Colonial Empire and had met all the conditions to become an
independent state. General Ramalho Eanes remembers Goa as a "great school"
and describes the Portuguese decolonization process as a non-glorious one.

Interviewer> In 1958, you went to Goa. It was your first assignment. You
took with you an edition of The Lusiadas from 1876.

Ramalho Eanes> Exactly. Goa was to me a great school. In Goa I learnt a lot
of good and bad things (bad because it influenced for a long time my
colonial vision). I lived and served under an unit commanded by a Goan
Lieutenant and therefore the unit was more like a family rather than a
military unit. The soldiers and sergeants were Goans too.

Goa was an historic and political micro cosmos, distinguished and different.
It was only lacking the political power in order to be considered a de facto
independent state. All the main posts were occupied by Goans - only the
Governor General and the Military Commander were not Goans. My Commander and
the 2nd Commander of the Regiment were Goans. The Administration of the
territory, even the Superior Administration, was run by Goans, the Judges of
the Supreme Courts were Goans; The Medical and Surgical School was run by
Goans...

Interviewer> Are you saying that Goa met the conditions to be independent?

Ramalho Eanes> Yes I am. Goa met all the conditions because we had made
something there which we had not managed to make anywhere else (I only
realised this later). A new culture had been created which was not ours but
it wasn't Indian either. Goa had its own cultural personality. Recently,
Professor Fausto Quadros compared Goa to Timor; I think he is somewhat
right. Goa could have been not the Portuguese State of India but The State
of Goa (independent).

Interviewer> Goa could have been made independent following the independence
of India by Great Britain?

Ramalho Eanes> I think so. Salazar, after the II World War, had all the
conditions met to grant independence to Goa.

Interviewer> Do you think Salazar is responsible for the invasion of Goa
(1961)?

Ramalho Eanes> Salazar is entirely responsible because he was unable to read
the geopolitical situation determined by the end of the II World War, in
which colonies made no sense. Salazar did not understand that and ended up
conducting us to a non-glorious decolonization process that we produced. He
is the first and largely responsible for that.

Interviewer> However, you yourself volunteered when the invasion (1961) took
place.

Ramalho Eanes> I was several times asked in Goa what I thought about the
future. I was a young Lieutenant and I was convinced that Portugal was from
Minho to Timor, which could have been a model in the world. I told them that
Portugal was there to stay and that they were as much Portuguese as myself.
When the invasion took place (1961), I thought to myself that despite the
fact that I did not lie, I had deceived them - so the minimum I could do was
to offer myself as volunteer.

Interviewer> Did they not accept?

Ramalho Eanes> No. It was too quick. Nobody ended up going there. We didn't
even send ammunitions or essential armaments.

Interviewer> Did you ever return to Goa?

Ramalho Eanes> No. I had accepted an invitation to visit India - and
naturally I would have visited Goa - but Mrs. Indira Ghandi was murdered [in
1984] and the visit was cancelled.

Interviewer> In 1962, you went to Macau, which is very different from Goa.
Macau also had conditions met to be independent?

Ramalho Eanes> Never. Macau was indeed a Chinese territory. Whilst there was
in Goa an Elite which was neither Portuguese nor Indian - it was Goan -, in
Macau there were Chinese and Portuguese. In Goa, Afonso de Albuquerque
recommended the marriage of several noble Goans with Portuguese.

Interviewer> The mix of races...

Ramalho Eanes> Which demonstrates that deep inside we are not racist.

Interviewer> Do you think that the Portuguese are not racist?

Ramalho Eanes> Yes. Although they show sometimes signs of racism. For
several reasons. But we are not racist. The letter from Pêro Vaz de Caminha
is quite relevant; there he does not say that the Portuguese found dark and
naked humans; he only describes what those humans had of great and of
different in terms of culture. A cultural racist individual sees things in a
much negative way.

Interviewer> But in Macau there was no mix of races.

Ramalho Eanes> That is true. One of my greatest disappointments was, when I
arrived in Macau, I realised that Goa was not our model after all.

Interviewer> It was an exception.

Ramalho Eanes> I did not realise immediately that Goa was an exception. What
I realised was that Goa was not our model - otherwise we would have tried to
apply it everywhere else, including Macau.

Interviewer> Macau was kind of the reverse of the standard.

Ramalho Eanes> Yes. And for a young Captain it was clear to me that Macau
could have been something totally different. We could have made of Macau
what the English made of Hong Kong. But there was nothing in Macau. It was a
village, very pleasant and beautiful...

Portugal President on Goa visit from Jan 13

The President of the Republic of Portugal, Prof Anibal Cavaco Silva, accompanied by his wife Dr Maria Cavaco Silva, and an official delegation would arrive in Goa on January 13 on a three-day visit to the state.
The entourage of Portugal President comprises of Portuguese ministers, members of Parliament, chiefs and secretaries to government, presidents of various organisations, ambassador of Portugal in India and others.
The visit of Portuguese President is part of weeklong goodwill visit to India. He, his wife and entourage would visit Mumbai, Bangalore, besides New Delhi and Goa during the visit.
During his visit to Goa, the Portuguese President would hold meetings with the Governor, Mr S C Jamir, and the Chief Minister, Mr Pratapsing Rane. He would also address members of Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry at a function in Panaji on January 13.
Prof Silva and his entourage would visit Old Goa Church complex on January 14,
morning. Later in the afternoon he would be the chief guest at the 19th convocation of Goa University and deliver convocation address. He would also be conferred an honorary degree by the Goa University.
He is also expected to visit the office of Portuguese Consulate General. The Portuguese President would leave for Mumbai on January 15.
