Dear Nalini,

Thanks for your posting which came via “casa-de-Goa’ I appreciate very much the efforts that you are doing to teach Portuguese and Spanish in Goa.

But curiously, the full list at TO is taken from one of my precious postings ! and one of them is already  …in Heaven: Berardo Pinto Pereira, who died here in Goa and the news came in the local media.! Now, that list includes persons who are …in Portugal and elsewhere abroad  and so ..they will not definitely come down to Goa for the Courses, but will appreciate your efforts.

I take this opportunity to convey to you my impressions of the last “Contacto Goa”:

1 The news  did not come , if I am right . in the local media, nor I received your usual circular letter.
2. On the previous day, I HAPPENED  to be tuned to RPTI, when at the end of a programme came an announcement” :” CONTACTO GOA…AMANHA” As usual no time in given !!
3.When I opened the TV , the interview with Adv .Usgaokar was on.Very interesting well documented. But when the camera was focused suddenly on my friend Dr. Fernando Colaco…he was just shown writing something. What was the connection? Why was he not given a chance to speak.?
4.The next episode was an interview with Laurie Pires, the well known musician, with this Band, etc. But  he was shown , fully dressed in Portuguese folk dresses along with his wife dancing a Portuguese folkdance…in his small hall at his residence!! Which I know very well as it is just opposite my residence.
So this was “created” for the occasion. My opinion is that each episode should focus our Goa as you see and not with situations CREATED for the purpose.
I will quote another example; long back on episode was on the “musical’ Monteiro family of Candolim, and one its members being the well known “Padri Chico” which even the family did not bother to speak about .
Fine .Then the family going for their lunch or dinner which was a rich buffet !!
You being a Goan, and now in Goa, will agree with me that in no family in Goa , however much “fidalga” it may be, the daily meals are done in a buffet form.

My suggestion to you will therefore be:
  1. More publicity in the local media
  2. The RTPI show correct timings like the BBC, Doordarshan, CNN,etc and start by the second and not sometimes  a few mts earlier or a few mts later
  3. The “Episodes” should show the real Goa today,as you did with Adv  Usgaocar and not almost ridiculous Portuguese folk danses perfomed in a small family hall. just to be filmed and shown to the WORLD that Goans even now dance in their dresses in their litle halls
  4. Choose things of Goa today, say ike “Shanti Avedna Ashram” in Loutolim, which you as a wife of a well known surgeon must have heard about.

With kind regards to you and all the Recipients

Goa has been producing great musicians and singers for generations. We all
know of so many who have been awarded international prizes and have achieved
so much in India as well as abroad. Remo, Lorna, Emiliano da Cruz, Agostinho
da Cruz, Cotta family, Maestro Antonio de Figueiredo, Patricia Rosario,
Gonzaga Coutinho, etc.

I would like to bring to your attention the recent great musical
achievements by two of our young Goans based in Goa:

1. Orlando de Noronha is an excellent Goan musician besides being also
famous for having introduced the art of the hand painted tiles in Goa a few
years back (an art he learned in Portugal).

Six months ago in January 2007, the President of Portugal - Prof. Dr. Cavaco
Silva - visited India (including Goa) on an official state visit. Orlando
was a musician at the Goa hotel where the President and the Presidential
Committee stayed and he soon impressed all of them with his musical talents.
One night the President organised a gala dinner for Goan VIPs and the main
performer was the Portuguese fado singer Katia Guerreiro. Katia who had met
Orlando days before and was very impressed with his musical talents
surprised him in true "de repente" style and invited him to the stage to
accompany her on the fado "Havemos de ir a Viana". However, Orlando did not
have a Portuguese guitar (the lead instrument for fado), so he accompanied
Katia with a bandolim.

On their return to Portugal, everyone cherished those moments and remembered
Orlando. Katia was determined that Orlando should have a Portuguese guitar.
Everyone agreed. Dr. Carlos Rodrigues, President of the Portuguese bank BIG
(Banco de Investimento Global) who was also part of the Portuguese
Presidential Committee and attended the gala dinner that night in Goa,
volunteered to sponsor Orlando's award. So, Orlando was invited to Portugal
and received on the 9th of June a Portuguese Guitar from the hands of the
President of Portugal himself. The ceremony was integrated in the official
celebrations of the day of Portugal, Camoes and of the Portuguese
Communities, in Setubal (south of Lisbon), and was described in local
newspapers and also the official site of the Portuguese Republic:

2. The very young Nerissa Almeida Santimano from Goa is one of the 10 world
finalists (out of 200 in total) of an international on-line luso-descendents
song contest organised by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
PT.com, Valentim de Carvalho and RTP, and promoted at large by the famous
Canadian and Luso-descendent singer Nelly Furtado.
Nerissa's song - "Sem Asas - Without Wings" - was voted 37812 times and
listened 46576 times over the internet. It is sung in 3 different languages:
Portuguese, Konkani and English.

Having won several competitions, Nerissa gained confidence and wrote her
first song in 2005 called "Take me Back". She has now written three more
songs. Nerissa participated in the All India Rock Concert called "Battle of
the Bands" where she won one of the best vocalist awards. She has also been
winning consecutively at the Portuguese singing competitions held by the
Fundacao Oriente in Goa, and has been to many Indo-Portuguese events to sing
a few numbers. "Sem Asas" is a compilation written by the Ex Consul General
of Portugal to Goa - Dr. Pedro Cabral Adao - who expired last year and
composed by Mr. Domingos for a song contest in 3 languages.

Listen to Nerissa's song here: http://www.lusavox.com/artist/?id=99#

Nerissa will be one of the 10 world finalists singing live at the final on
the 12th August 2007, in Braga, Portugal. The event will be broadcasted by
the Portuguese International TV Channel RTPi live, so everyone can watch in
the world and in Goa as well. Let us all wish Nerissa best of luck for the
12th August final!

Parrikar claims he has the majority
NT Staff Reporter
Panaji, July 25 In a shocking late night development, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party withdrew support to the Congress-led coalition and the Bharatiya Janata Party along with the support of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, United Goans Democratic Party, Save Goa Front and Independent, Mr Anil Salgaocar was all set to form the government on the back of the resignations faxed by the Santa Cruz MLA, Ms Victoria Fernandes from the Congress party and the assembly.
The press conference was addressed by BJP leader, Mr Manohar Parrikar, MGP’s Mr Ramkrishna Dhavalikar as well as the SGF president, Mr Churchill Alemao, Ms Victoria Fernandes and Mr Anil Salgaocar.
The Panaji MLA, Mr Manohar Parrikar claiming to be the leader of the group, said that they had already faxed their claim to form the government to the Governor, Mr S C Jamir as the Congress-led government was reduced to a minority.
He said that they would be personally meeting the Governor on Thursday morning.
He also said that only one Congress MLA, Ms Victoria Fernandes had resigned and so the de facto strength of the House was 39.
Mr Parrikar said that he has the support of two SGF MLAs, an UGDP MLA, two MGP MLAs and an Independent MLA. Expressing confidence of forming the government, Mr Parrikar said that he was not forming the government with the support of the Congress MLAs.
When asked if any more Congress MLAs would be supporting them by resigning he said, “Wait and watch and everything would be clear by Thursday afternoon.”
Under the banner ‘Aam Admi’, Mr Parrikar said that the present government was not functioning and for the past two months nothing had been moving ahead. “The Digambar-led government has been reduced to a minority and so he should resign or we will defeat him on the floor of the House,” he added.
When asked about the status of the MGP, Mr Parrikar said that the MGP had sent faxes withdrawing support to the present government. Mr Ramkrishna Dhavalikar has also faxed his resignation from the ministry, he added.
Most of the BJP MLAs were present. Also present were the MGP president, Mr Pandurang Raut and the BJP central observer, Mr Rudy Pratap Singh.
Mr Ramkrishna Dhavalikar said that he had joined the Congress coalition as they wanted good governance, but he had been watching the governance for sometime now and found that it was basically non-functional.
“At even at this moment the portfolios have not been finalised and I feel that this cannot continue,” he added. Mr Dhavalikar further said, “I was always against the Congress party till the assembly elections, but when we extended support to the Congress, we were not treated fairly well. I now personally feel that we should not continue with Mr Digambar and the Congress party.”
He stated that the new coalition would be stable as there was cooperation between the partners.
Mr Churchill Alemao said that he hoped for good governance and that was final. With regard to the Mopa airport issue, he said that all his 7 demands, including the scrapping of the Mopa airport, would be taken care of by the new government and claimed that Dabolim would be developed.
The industrialist and Independent MLA from Sanvordem, Mr Anil Salgaocar said that he had supported the Congress government with the hope that Mr Digambar Kamat would independently safeguard the state. “During the assembly session various demands were placed forward but nothing seemed to move forward,” he added.

Congress humiliated me, says Victoria
NT Staff Reporter
Panaji, July 25 The lone woman Congress MLA, Ms Victoria Fernandes submitted her resignation from the Congress party and the assembly thus reducing the strength of the assembly to 39.Expressing her displeasure over the treatment meted out by the Congress government, Ms Fernandes said that she has always supported the Congress party and when she was elected she was given all assurances and promises of high posts, but they merely remained assurances.
“But I was humiliated and this was the injustice meted out towards the lone woman Congress MLA,” she added.
Being the lone woman Congress MLA, ministry could have been given to me but it was not done. “Forget about a ministerial berth, there were so many corporations but none was entrusted to me,” she lamented.
Ms Fernandes alleged that the Congress party members have no mannerisms and ethics. “I have trust that the Goans will get good governance with the formation of a new government under the leadership of Mr Parrikar,” she concluded.

MLAs refusal to bite bait averted fall of govt
NT Staff Reporter
Panaji, July 25 The last moment change of heart by Congress MLA from Curchorem, Mr Shyam Satardekar, and refusal of others who were approached with a “bait” of amounts ranging from Rs 15 to Rs 20 crore, prevented the collapse of Congress led-government headed by Mr Digambar Kamat, yesterday.
According to highly placed sources, those who plotted the “downfall” of the government held a meeting at the residence of an officer on special duty to a minister in the Kamat cabinet at government quarters in Altinho, on Monday evening.
The meeting was attended by two ministers (including one of Congress party) in the government, besides Mr Churchill Alemao, Mr Atanasio Monserrate, Mr Manohar Parrikar, Mr Rudolf Fernandes (son of St Cruz MLA – Ms Victoria Fernandes), Mr Pandurang Dhavalikar and two staunch supporters of Bharatiya Janata Party and it was decided to topple the government by making Congress MLAs resign their seats.
The sources said that leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Save Goa Front and the lone UGDP MLA assured all those who were to switch sides that besides the “cash reward” they would also be made ministers in the new cabinet to be headed by Mr Parrikar. As per the agreement between them Mr Churchill Alemao was to be the deputy to Mr Parrikar, while the third sport was to go to Mr Monserrate.
A non-Congress minister, who was part of the toppling game, assured those gathered at the meeting that he would ensure that Mr Vishwajit Rane, the Health Minister, would join them later. He took the responsibility of getting the junior Rane to join the new formation only to be rebuffed by the later, said the sources, which was also a reason behind the “failed” coup.
The sources said that there was desperation in the opposition camp and that they were ready to part with any amount of cash to “buy” the MLAs to get back into power. They also used “blackmailing” tactics for the purpose, the sources added.
The sources further said that while Mr Parrikar was attempting to prove his leadership that he still wielded magic to win over his enemies and help the party “regain” the lost glory, Mr Monserrate wants to be at the helm of affairs of the town and country planning department.
Mr Churchill Alemao, they said, has become more desperate for power and that having failed to win the “heart” of Congress leadership by offering issue based support he put his brother to take up his case, only to fail in his latest attempt. It is quite well-known in the political circles that younger Alemao has been trying hard to rehabilitate his elder brother.
According to the sources, Mr Silveira refused the offer made to him and walked away from associating with the toppling game. Later Mr Satardekar also gave up his plans to associate with any move to topple the government on learning that he was being taken for a ride, said the sources adding that much before he came to the assembly he called up the Chief Minister to say that he was behind him.
The plotters of toppling game, except Mr Churchill Alemao, were left with only Ms Victoria Fernandes and as they failed to garner support to reduce the Congress-led government to minority, they beat a hasty retreat and one of them rushed to the assembly.
Having failed to dislodge the government the “plotters” of the coup met late in the evening to take stock of the situation. The meeting was attended by the Alemao brothers, Mr Parrikar, Mr Monserrate and Ms Fernandes after the end of the assembly session.
The sources said that every Congress MLA present at the meeting convened by the Chief Minister has assured to stand by him and not associate themselves with any move to cause instability in the state in future.
The sources said that later in the evening the Power Minister, Mr Aleixo Sequeira and Mr Agnelo Fernandes, were seen in the company of Mr Joaquim Alemao in a stared here hotel and helped diffuse the situation.
Meanwhile, the Revenue Minister, Mr Jose Philip D’Souza urged the opposition to desist from making moves to topple the government saying that instability would be counter-productive to the progress of the state and its people.
“Give us time to perform for at least two to three years and then see our performance,” he told the House during reply to debate on demands.

Panaji, July 25 The leader of opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar today warned against the worsening malaria situation in the state and cautioned the Health Minister to be wary of wrong figures given by the government health services.Speaking on the demands for grants for health, Mr Parrikar said that since June 2006 upto June 2007, there was a record high of over 7500 cases of malaria in Goa of which there were 1800 cases of falciparum. For the month of July upto July 14, there were 1491 cases of which there were 412 cases of falciparum, which showed that the cases of falciparum were increasing in Goa. He said the government figures show less incidence of malaria and stated that he had obtained his figures from the National Vector Borne Diseases Programme, which was a central government programme. Commending the Health Minister for the enthusiasm he was putting into his job, Mr Parrikar said an important challenge before the minister was the collection of correct data from the department, because often wrong figures are given to ministers.
Mr Parrikar also stated that once the Universal Mediclaim Scheme is finalised, it will take a lot of load off the main government hospitals like the Goa Medical College at Bambolim. He suggested the smaller surgeries costing Rs 5000 or Rs 10,000 could be allotted to private hospitals and this would reduce the workload on the GMC or the district hospitals further.
He also suggested that private doctors could be involved in government hospitals as consulting doctors and be paid some fee to reduce the shortage of doctors. Commenting on the action of the Health Minister of suspending 21 staff at the GMC, Mr Parrikar said accountability should be applied to not only the lower grades but also to higher grades of employees.
Opposing the demands, the Siolim MLA, Mr Dayanand Mandrekar urged that the construction of the new Asilo Hospital at Mapusa be expedited, as this will reduce the load on the Goa Medical College. He also urged the proper attention should be paid to the scan machine and the MRI machines at the GMC because they fail frequently. Mr Mandrekar said that the extension work of the Siolim Primary Health Centre was tendered one year back but is still pending. He urged the minister to look into it.
The Pernem MLA, Mr Dayanand Sopte complained that the condition of the Pernem (Tuem) upgraded health centre is very bad. He said doctors have been transferred without replacement for years. He also said the X-ray machine has no operator and called for urgent attention to the health centre. The Fatorda MLA, Mr Damodar Naik pointed out that the malaria has risen in Goa and said that builders hiring outstation labourers hardly care for the Rs 1000 fine imposed on them. He also said 40 per cent of the health cards are not renewed. He called for stringent action against these builders.
The Cortalim MLA, Mr Mauvin Godinho who spoke to support the demands, said that there is an acute shortage of medical personnel in all-medical facilities in Goa. He said the Chicalim Cottage Hospital located in Mormugao taluka, does not have even the bare minimum facilities. He also pointed out that all the rooms of the Cansaulim Health Centre were leaking. He said the GMC has a lot of latest equipment but most of it is not working and therefore patients are diverted to private hospitals and called for total revamp of the entire system.

Caros Amigos,
It is not only a good proposition but it will hold
good for all the municipalities within Goa.
Who else other than the Portuguese can understand Goa

"BLACK" - a crowning glory: Comedy Queen Querobina

- By Gasper Crasto , Kuwait

Experiencing a life marked by upheavals and cheer, the on-fire actress based in Kuwait -- Querobina Carvalho – Quero to friends, has transcended Goa ’s stereotype stage style to become one of the finest actresses of this generation against all odds. She is undoubtedly a superstar and on a pedestal equal to legendary celebrities of the stage. Querobina is perhaps the only actress who can do comedy as well as tragedy roles and at the highest standard at that, and sing with a voice that can melt stone hearts.

photo Popularly known as ‘Comedy Queen Querobina’, she has the distinction of winning 3 straight Kala Academy awards as the Best Singer of Goa from 1973 to 1975. Acclaimed as one of Goa’s popular comedienne and a tragedy actress too, Querobina has tirelessly served Konkani stage even after coming to work in Kuwait .  The multitalented star features in the first Konkani E-Cinema ‘BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion’ shot entirely in Kuwait . The film produced by renowned director T-Bush is scheduled for a premier screening in Kuwait on Aug 10, 2007 at Masrah, Hawalli Auditorium , Kuwait .

Querobina’s first step on the stage was at the age of 9 years where she sang her first solo in St. Aloysius High School. She recalls singing the song based on history of the school composed by her uncle Agnelo Carvalho.

Later in 1975 she sang a duet called ‘Moddko’ with her uncle in the latter’s drama ‘Suth’. The two found themselves much in demand after that for every tiatr held that time at ‘Ganvchea Festank’ in the neighboring villages. Querobina’s rise to fame began with her ‘first break' on the professional stage in A.M. Pacheco’s drama ‘Mr. Romeo’ and ‘Odruxtt’ in 1977.

Crowning of ‘Comedy Queen Querobina’

Querobina labored long in the field of different roles especially as a replacement for Patrick Dourado’s ‘Soth’ and the second ever ladies show on Konkani stage ‘Oxem Ghoddtta’ before her acting in Goa’s mega hit dramas showed the extent of her power.  She soon went on to act in Pacheco’s ‘Don Roste’, ‘Vis Vorsam Adim’ and Nelson (Nelson-Conception-Anthony) Alphonso’s ‘Asro.’ In 1978 she totally joined Patrick Dourado’s troupe that brought her recognition as a professional artiste and also the title ‘Comedy Queen Querobina’ for his drama ‘Ostori’.

“That was the first time I had done a comedy role,” commented Querobina remembering her felicitation as ‘Comedy Queen Querobina’ at Bombay ’s famous Birla Hall. The greatness of her acting came forth again in performances of Patrick’s tragedy hit ‘Lok Sangtolo’, and M. Boyer’s ‘Mog Kazar Divorce’. Soon she was pulled in Bombay by late Bab Peter to act in an all Bombay professional group to act in ‘Guneaum Mhozo Nhuim’.

photo
What followed after that has been a part of her best career achievements. “I climbed more steps of my acting career in Jose Rod’s ‘Nissonn’ and the audience cried with me in Mario de Vasco’s ‘Dhump’ in which I acted a poor bride and sang a melancholy song in fully dressed bridal attire. Later, I performed mostly comedy roles in Prince Jacob’s productions,” disclosed the star.

Since then, die-hard tiatro fans have followed her career closely, watching her metamorphose into one of the State’s most recognized faces on stage. Her numerous other acting credits include Patrick Dourado’s superhits such as Oxem Ghoddtta, Ghatki Bhoinn, Bhavacho Cheddo, Familik Vollkona, Lok Sangtolo, Tem Mhojem Soirem, Dev Borem Korum, Tin Fogotteache Marann, Varem, Noketr, Patok, etc; C.D. Silva and Patrick Dourado’s joint venture ‘Mannkam Motiam, Mog, etc.

Most Memorable Role

“My role of a mother in Patrick’s drama ‘Dev Borem Korum’ remains one of my most memorable,” said Querobina adding, “I got a tremendous response from the audience in this particular drama.” She further acknowledged that it was Patrick Dourado who had encouraged her to do comedy, “I was an instant hit right from the first show of ‘Ostori’ – my first drama in a comedy role.”

Querobina featured in approximately 27 different dramas of Patrick Dourado before she quit the director for better offers. In-between she also acted in shows of Conny M. D’Silva, Vitorin Pereira, Master Vaz, legendary Shri Rosario Rodrigues, Menino de Bandar, etc.

Prominent hits that she acted are Bab Peter’s ‘Mijas’, ‘Guneanv Mhozo Nhoim’, ‘Tuka Kiteak Poddlam’; Robin Vaz’s ‘Biatin’, ‘Chamcha’; C. Alvares’ ‘Xezari Kombo’ ; Jacinto Vaz’s drama ‘Sukh ani Dukh’; Wilmix’s ‘Sonvsar ani Sorg’; Roseferns’ ‘Tuttlele Dhaage’; and Prince Jacob’s superhits ‘Pavnnek’, ‘Ponvot’, ‘Pordexi’, ‘Poltodd’, ‘Pangddo’, ‘Pergao’, ‘Poixe-Poixe’, etc.

Querobina has also sung and rendered her voice in approximately 56 folk plays on All India RadioGoa which were a major source of entertainment for public before the advent of television in Goa in the wake of the 1982 Asiad.
As a comedian Querobina has acted alongside famous artistes of Konkani stage that include Comedian Dias, Comedienne Platilda, Comedian Philip, Comedian Domnic, Augustine, Sherly, Sally, Comedian Jesus, Luis Bachchan, Nelson, Ben Evangelisto, Ambe, X. Almeida, M. Boyer, Jacinto Vaz, Titta Pritto, Tony Martins, Paul Romy, Hortencio, late Luis Dias, etc. She was a darling of the crowd in Prince Jacob’s shows alongside Jacob and Humbert which people still want to see. “My first co-artiste in a comedy role was Comedian Dias,” she said emphasizing, “Humbert is the best comedian I have acted and clicked with..”

Professional Treasure

Born to Andrew Carvalho and Arcangela Fernandes and coming from the beautiful coastal village Majorda, Querobina grew up with her younger brother Anthony – who died in a heart-attack. What Quero feels about her brother's death and her closeness to his children is, of course, entirely personal.

To the curiosity as to how she still remembered so many minutiae of the past, Querobina produced a pristine diary from her purse describing it as her ‘professional treasure’ and a pride of possession since 1977 containing details of every drama that she acted – the name and place of the show and the ‘share’ she received for that particular show.

It was in celebrated director M.Boyer’s drama ‘Mog Kazar Divorce’ that she first toured the Middle East and made the trip again for another 5 times in Prince Jacob’s shows. Recalling her overseas tours Querobina underlines, “In 1989, I performed in London for Prince Jacob’s ‘Painem’ and ‘Pergao’; my first trip to Kuwait was in Mario de Majorda when the director specially brought me from Goa to act in his drama ‘Sambau’ staged on 9th September 1994 at Keifan Hall.”

The much in demand actress also toured Dubai and Bahrain for Jose Rod’s Mauli and for Comedian Philip’s drama ‘Hem Kazar Koslem’, and also traveled to Qatar , Bahrain from Kuwait to act in dramas on 3 different occasions.

Querobina has an audio album dedicated to her role model -- legendary tragedy Queen Ophelia who has been known to her since a number of years. “Earlier, I used to do songs written by others, but my stay in Kuwait has unveiled yet another of my hidden talents...I compose my own songs now… I have sung on approximately 39 audios and I feature in 8 home videos.”

A blazing role in BLACK

On the intricacy in adjusting to comedy and tragedy and her role in the film BLACK, Querobina answered, “Comedy is not the most difficult art as most think, but yes, it requires a slightly better sense of timing. Performing a comedy scene is like narrating a joke. The joke may be wonderful but if it is not narrated with the right flair, the right expressions, the right timing, it will fall flat. Some kind of inherent flair and liking for comedy, the sensitivity to imbibe the funnier and the more humorous influences from the atmosphere, a good sense of humor, the ability and the habit of playing with words and phrases is most essential in comedy. My fans will speak about my fluency in both versions. From whatever little I have known about acting, there cannot be a fixed formula for tragedy roles. Nobody can justify a particular method. For me, acting in tragedy roles is the assembly of various sources - the feed I get from my co-actors, the script and the instructions of my director, etc. Acting in any role for that matter does not involve any hard and fast rule. The only way you can possibly improve on your acting is by rehearsing with your co-artistes -- a lot more than you do alone. In BLACK, my co-artiste is Comedian Philip and Cajetan de Sanvordem.”

Talking about T-Bush, the director of BLACK, Querobina stated, “Someone watching the shoot would know that T-Bush was always beleaguered inside but he just remained a ‘clever’ professional with his direction. That's my perception of what I saw. He is just an international phenomenon, to me, as to what he really does – like those big directors in Hindi films that we have heard. One fine day, he will surely win a big ‘tag’ as one of the ‘leading lights’ of Indian Cinema. The biggest things I want for BLACK is to perform well at what they call -- the ‘box office’. If it performs well that's just some more steps forward for T-Bush and the E-Cinema concept to venture into new ones.”

Destination Kuwait .

“I came to Kuwait not with a lust for money but to keep my mind and eyes away from personal disturbances. God has given me tremendous grace and good friends to overcome the tribulations that I had to face in life,” says Querobina adding, “my happiness over the years has been my profession and that is the ultimate strength that keeps me alive and going..”

photo
Querobina’s ‘residency’ in Kuwait has been hailed in the media by many Goans as a gift to Kuwait Konkani lovers but the void created by her absence in Goa is missed by thousands. Since her arrival in Kuwait in 1995 she has acted in various dramas. Some of the prominent directors are Rosary Ferns, Comedian Philip, Mario de Majorda, Jose Rod, etc. Most recently, she has acted for the shows of Salu Faleiro, Simon Gonsalves, Francis de Tuem, etc. Indisputably, a multifaceted actress like Querobina would have been hailed as a superstar had she been acting in any other language. But few awards have come on the way of this great artiste apart from felicitations by Konkani Heritage Kuwait in 2000; felicitations by director Mario de Majorda, felicitations by United Club of Utorda in 2007 and in Bahrain at the staging of Anthony Luis Fernandes’ show.

“The audience has accepted and appreciated me in comedy roles. But my greatest wish is to do one ‘excellent’ tragedy role,” divulged Querobina. Incidentally, after a gap of 12 years, the most wanted actress is set to appear on the Goan stage later in August this year in Laurent Pereira’s drama ‘Hea Gharachim Dharam Bond’.

Expectations of BLACK

When asked about the shooting of BLACK, the ever cheerful and highly amusing Querobina said giggling, “I always wanted a scene where I would ride a beautiful white horse, with pink rosebuds falling down from the sky and angels flying around. I think it should have been there in BLACK somewhere, I don't care whether it has anything to do with the plot, I would have looked good in it, but they never shot it..”

Keeping aside her humor she related, “I had a wonderful experience working with T-Bush and the filming of BLACK. It was something very different from stage, I just liked to be there on the sets. ‘BLACK’ will surely be a crowning glory for our mother tongue Konkani, our tiny Goa and all the regional language films. The fact that this movie is made entirely in Kuwait makes it even more exceptional. The movie will definitely go a long way and people of all languages will look upon the rich language with recognition and regard. A unique storyline with a backdrop of beautiful Goa, scenes of Kuwait , and originality of the language used in the dialogues are obviously the main aspects that will contribute to the high quality of the movie.”

Talking about her hobbies, Querobina said, “I love music. I'm an actress, but as far as my appreciation for music goes, it is incredible. What I'am listening to doesn’t depend on my mood. I kind of let the music speak for me sometimes. Kuwait ’s FM is my favorite music station, the music puts me to sleep and wakes me up...”

On her favorite actors and direction, Querobina said, “Frankly, I have no favorites. Whoever has done well at a given point of time in a show and has enjoyed doing that piece of work has impressed me. Invariably I have found that no actor or director can be an absolute perfectionist. Actors who have been exceptional in one role have looked quite ordinary in another. So I cannot think of any name or names I can count as my favorites. As for the directors, I rate Roseferns as the top director I have worked under.”

Portugal municipality proposes to share projects with MMC

BY HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, JULY 11 — If only the Margao Municipal accord its approval, aid
could flow from Camara Municipal de Oeiras, Portugal to undertake projects
of mutual benefits for both Margao and Oeiras.
If Fundacaco Cidade de Lisboa is to be believed, Oeiras is one of the
richest Municipalities in Portugal and has a substantial population of Goan
origin.
The Indo-Portuguese Friendship Society, Goa through the offices of Fundacao
Cidade de Lisboa, Goa delegation has received the proposal from the Mayor of
Camara Municipal de Oeiras, Portugal to partner with the Margao Municipal
Council to undertake the projects.
A letter addressed to the Margao Municipal Chairperson by Dr Jorge Renato
Fernandes, Delegate of Fundacao de Lisboa in Goa, says the Indo-Portuguese
Friendship Society, Goa will liaison between the two Municipal bodies to
take up the projects.
Dr Jorge says in the letter that there will be no financial cost implication
on part of the Margao Municipal Council should the Civic body accept the
proposal.
In order to foster friendship and better understanding between the people of
the two partner cities, the Fundacao de Lisboa in Goa has suggested the
following projects which could be undertaken in Goa.
One, the beautification of the city, solid waste management and disposal,
storm water and flood management, gastronomy & food festivals, Portuguese
language promotion including online learning through internet, family and
student exchanges for promotion and better understanding of cultures &
heritages and promotion and exchange between the Portuguese and Goan
cultures.
MMC Chairperson Johnson Fernandes told Herald that he would place the
proposal before the Council for a decision. “It’s for the Council to decide
whether to accept the proposal or not”, he said.

Braz de Parra composes songs with danceable beat riffs
Eccentric lyrics define soundtracks of ‘BLACK’
-by Gasper Crasto

Music is the most beautiful of arts. And when music is entwined with words, it becomes a perfect melody. The association between a popular film and emotion is a long-established part of the lore of Indian cinema, for filmmakers and fans alike. Running alongside this, and indeed long preceding it, is an equally entrenched association between lyrics, music and emotion.

photo
Right from the first Konkani film 'Sukhi Koni' made in 1949 to films like Mogacho Anvddo, Amchem Noxib, Nirmon, Boglant, Bhuierantlo Munis, Mog ani Moipas, Padri, etc, songs have assumed a much more prominent role in the soundtrack and sound design of feature films. Like their classical precursors, soundtracks, based on a collage of songs, play a vital role in amplifying and inflecting the much desired touching significance to films.

Winner of Best Singer Kala Academy Award in 1989, Braz Rodrigues popularly known as Braz de Parra holds credits for writing the lyrics of ‘BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion’ – the first Konkani E-Cinema scheduled for release in Kuwait on Aug 10, 2007 at Masrah, Hawalli Auditorium.

Many people argue about the importance of lyrics or wordings in songs. Many are staunchly in the ‘lyrics rule’ corner, while many claim to never pay attention to them, saying that they don’t really think lyrics impact their appreciation so long as the voice itself is pleasant.

But in Konkani songs, if the words of a song or voice of the vocalist irritate, chances are that the music isn’t going to win the audience over on its own. And if the music is derivative or uninspired, the lyricist is going to have a hard time saving the day all by his lonesome in the critical land that is the ears of the audience.

It’s turn to get introspective and a bit philosophical about the lyrics in BLACK that has some thoughtful lines specially coined by the soft spoken Braz.

photo Among a genre of top singers based in Kuwait Braz de Parra is known more as a name than seen or heard much. However, the low profiled composer is nothing new to Konkani songs or acting. He has regularly featured on stage right from his childhood. At a very tender age he starred as a child artiste for his first stage appearance in Fernando Bhattkar’s drama ‘Guneanv Konnacho’ in his home-town Parra, North Goa. Catching on to inspiration from his uncle Lawry Rodrigues when he was still in the 9th standard, Braz wrote and directed a drama called ‘Nagounno’ with a full professional caste that included famous artistes such as late Jerry Boy, Jerome de Mapusa, S. Lemos, Marcelino de Betim and legendary singer Young Menezes.

Son of famous North Goa playwright and composer Jose Rod and Eliza Rodrigues, Braz de Parra is happily living in Kuwait with wife Cynthia and son Avlon. Working since 1992, Braz was first introduced by famous tiatr star Jose Rod in Kuwait to sing a opening chorus in Mario de Majorda’s drama ‘Sambau’ staged at Keifan Hall in September 1994.

“I have grown up watching my idols Comedian Philip and Jose Rod who are good friends now,” discloses Braz, “I used to dream of acting with them.”

Before coming to Kuwait, Braz acted in dramas such as ‘Bhim toxem bhat’ of Valente Mascarenhas, ‘Chitrakar’ of Bonaventure D’Pietro, ‘Upkar’ of JoeBoy, ‘Mati’ of Thomas Andrade, etc. In his last drama in Goa in 1989 entitled, ‘Rostad’, Braz had introduced budding singer Carmen Barboza and late Comedian Vitorin.

Significance in the name

Braz is known as Braz de Parra right from a very young age. Braz says, “I wanted to be related to my birthplace. My father, popularly known as Comedian Jose Rod has been my role model. He encouraged me to sing in his drama ‘Mogachem Kazar Atanchea Tempar’ which was written during the Portuguese times but could be staged only after Goa’s independence due to censorship.
When questioned about the ‘miraculous’ appointment by T-Bush to compose lyrics for BLACK, Braz says, "I never thought I would come this far. Looking back down the years I feel ‘top-of-the-world’ to have written the songs in what is going to be the first Konkani E-Cinema. My only recognition in an audio album is in A.M. Araujo’s ‘Kaido to Kaido’. My close friend in Kuwait, Ambrosio Fernandes from Guirim has always encouraged my talent. And my biggest support has been my wife Cynthia. She persistently gores me to bring out the best. Soon, I have plans to record my own album entitled ‘Avy’ in dedication to one of my closest buddies in life named Avelino who was unfortunate to die at a young age. I also have plans to stage a musical show in Kuwait named ‘Comic Uncle’ for which I will bring in my dad from Goa to sing.”

photo
Composing Technique

“I devise the tune first,” says Braz, “Setting the lyrics is not difficult after that. It’s a God’s gift that I can commit a tune to memory because I am not trained to write musical notes. I can proudly say that my lyrics, composing style and melody are quite unique and unconventional from the standard Goan songs. It’s a great thing that T-Bush noticed my distinct way during my performance at one of the one-act play competitions held in Kuwait and later engaged me to write lyrics for his kept-on-hold film ‘All the Best’ which has 5 songs. Among the pick of the songs in BLACK, ‘Rau, rau, rau, kiteak voit go dhanvon’ set to a unique tune and rhythm is sure to enchant the audience.”

Braz further revealed, “Two affective functions of the lyrics were consistently kept in mind whilst writing the lyrics of BLACK: expressing emotions (of characters) and moods (of scenes), and eliciting and arousing emotions in spectators.”

Lyrical Limitations

“Lyrics in BLACK are evidently pretty significant,” says Braz, “since they are clearly articulated and for the most part dominate the mix of new and old generation. In Konkani history, there is a line of folk and latest songwriters with obviously ‘inimitable’ ambitions, evident in the foregrounding of complex lyrics; here I’m thinking of legendary composers and singers like Kid Boxer, Young Menezes, Alfred Rose, Anthony Mendes, M. Boyer, C. Alvares, Wilfy Rebimbus, Jerome D’ Souza, etc. Sometimes lyrics have ‘theatrical’ significance, but only sometimes; on other occasions, the vocals register a human presence and expressivity like in most M. Boyer’s dramas. For example, the vocal track of ‘Amchem Noxib’ film allows us to grasp catchy lines like ‘Mogan asonk borem, jivit sukhi khorem’ that let your feelings slip – which resonate associatively and of course with the narrative of the film.”
photo

But what happens when a song is worked into the soundtrack of a film?

According to Braz, “If anything, the process of remixing a song’s original sonic balance within that of a film soundtrack tends to displace lyrical content even further. In analyzing the lyrics of BLACK it is all too easy to drift into an analysis which focuses on the characters as well as persona of the cast. To analyze the lyrics per se is rather like examining a film’s script. There is nothing wrong so long as we don’t confuse an artiste with the film and the song-as-performed. The relationship between lyrics, music and image is constantly shifting in a movie more or less overt or subtle ways. So it is for the audience to scrutinize and link the song to the story.”

A singer himself, Braz says, “Typically, I compose songs combining my music tastes and influences, with rhythm as the predominant style. Not all of my songs can be classified as entertaining; I have quieter and other comedy songs too. I always try to have melodious songs; the melodies can then be combined with different style of singing or with any other style. ‘Rau rau, kiteak voit go dhanvon’ is a good example of an original and brilliant work combining melodies with drums and danceable beat riffs. T-Bush has tried to find the right harmony for the songs by fitting the melodies with the most appropriate music rhythm and style. All of my songs in the movie are thus highly experimental. The benchmark was probably set by T-Bush in acquiring a masterpiece of different techniques of musicianship. T-Bush himself has sung a song which will be one of the prime background soundtracks of BLACK. It is my own creativity to invent these inspiring lyrics. But I feel that it is best to let the movie speak. All the songs in the movie are quite unique and I am sure people will take home some of the lyrics from BLACK as they leave the theatre.

On Younger brigade of singers

Braz, who has crooned several of his own compositions in dramas, admits that many of the upcoming Goan singers are extremely talented. "Youngsters these days have marvelous voices and they pick up very fast. As they grow up listening to various singers from their very childhood, they are able to sing varied styles beautifully. Hopefully, we will see a new generation of Konkani singers soon."

The singer also believes the young brigade shouldn't shy away from learning classical music. He says, “However, much one sings with typical Goan tunes, it will all be in vain unless one has a distinct, incomparable deviation base. Without that, one cannot sing a spectrum of songs. It's important that singers should have knowledge about different rhythms within our own music. Although I have witnessed the change in techniques right from ‘Nirmon’s Claudia’ to ‘Uloilelim Utram’ of ‘Bhuierantlo Munis’ there are not many variations of Konkani songs in recent years except for the music. I feel we have to change with time. I have high expectations from the songs in BLACK. I hope it will open a new door for further innovations.  Let us see, it all depends on the public reception.”
photo
Speaking further on the soundtracks of BLACK which are sung by Gracy Morais, Comedian Philip, T-Bush and Maggie, Braz says, “The song sung by T-Bush is a song which I enjoyed while writing and I have to give full marks to the musician Norman Cardozo, who breathed life into it," he adds, “This track is high on emotions interspersed with Goan musical arrangements that gives it an exclusive feel. The greatest advantage for the song was the placement in the storyline. The other songs act as a point of linkage for moving the story forward.”

The gentle lyricist further added, “As a songwriter I only had to write what the story demanded. In most circumstances, a song is used as a bridge in the story. There is a sense of humor in every song. When you have such fun songs, they are meant to break the tedium and keep the audience guessing about the next development.”

On the sets of BLACK

Apart from the songs, Braz has also acted in the movie alongside his friend and favorite artiste Comedian Philip.

“Shooting was so much fun,” he says, “You know, I had heard how difficult it was for any director to get artistes to act together. But we all had a ball at the sets! There was never any bitterness and jealousy among co-stars that I had heard about. T-Bush is so well planned and yet so spontaneous with his actors.”

Before concluding the interview Braz ascertained, “Eccentric lyrics and exceptional singing style define the tracks of ‘BLACK’, which should take the movie to a different level of popularity.”

João,

I am not sure how much Portuguese you are really going to learn in Goa in this day and age amongst friends and relatives!

Fundação oriente could be a small start, as they have some material in their library as well as they might know a couple of tutors who can give you a head start.

Alternatively, you can always learn basic Portuguese for free online at your own home. Check this website and you can get into many other websites through their links page:

Boa sorte!

‘BLACK’ to revive traditions of Goan music
               -by gasper crasto

Goans, in India, are called a people of music and
dance. Goans made a name for themselves in India and
beyond as ambassadors of music -- both Western and
Indian at ceremonial and religious events. The history
of Goan music can be traced right back to ancient
times. It is said that Goan music encompassed the
human prerequisite from womb to tomb.

Medieval Goan murals portray several examples of
musical instruments accompanied by folk singing. This
tradition has survived in the coastal Indian state,
Goa – a city of sun and sand - down to the present
day. As with other traditional arts and crafts the
requisite skills and finer points of the traditional
music were passed down from one generation to the
next. But of late, the art is dying a slow death.

There is much analysis in this article as related to
T-Bush’s feature film – the first Konkani E-Cinema
entitled ‘BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion’, about what
is wrong, what has changed, and what is inevitable in
this genre of music and musicians.

The feature film scheduled for release on Aug 10, 2007
will see Internationally acclaimed director T-Bush
making an effort to portray the grandeur of this
fading art in a movie which is a sweet, just, humane
and interesting melodrama of wit and emotions that
recapitulates the life of a musician in a Goan
backdrop of traditions and culture. T-Bush has
researched the subject in depth to come up with such a
fantastic portrayal.

Is the schism between traditional and contemporary
deeper than we think?

Sure, there are many curmudgeons who complain about
the navel-gazing, musicians of the current genre. And
many, specially strumming musicians who gripe about
the ‘tradition’.

Before we try to tackle that weighty question, maybe
we should consider the bigger picture of contemporary
music than our forgotten tunes. Apparently traditional
music has been relegated to dinosaur status. According
to the new genre the traditional fad is all but
ancient history.

Is it the latest music really music? Does it matter
and should we care? Let me offer an argument. I am not
out to define music in any academic way though.

There are innumerable written examples of Goan music
although the matching melodies might be generally
lost. The music variety was all the more augmented
when Christian missionaries came to Goa in the wake of
the Portuguese conquest in 1510. In the course of
time, young and budding aficionados were introduced to
the basics of music and the art of solfegio to enable
them to fluently sight-read and play music from the
western musical notation.

Talented youngsters were taught to play the violin,
the mandolin, the vihuela (forerunner of the modern
guitar), the harp and the organ. These instruments
were then used to accompany singers at stage shows and
street plays.

The Jesuits, Dominicans and Augustinians, among the
several religious orders who came to undertake
evangelical work and higher education in Goa,
conducted advanced music classes as did the Royal
Convent of St. Monica for girls.

However, there was a transitional period in Goan
history when playing Goan music itself was deemed not
respectable for scholars or the learned, and the girl
students had to hide their instruments, afraid of
being regarded as female entertainers.

Goan music experienced a renaissance when the country
(Goa, Daman & Diu was a country till 1961) acquired
its own musicians who communicated poetic and
political messages in a popular tradition during peak
Portuguese regime. The songs and dances were
accompanied by a variety of string instruments like
the veena, sarangi and tanpura, woodwinds like the
dholak, ghumot, madlem, kasallem, bansari and zanj
(cymbals). The programs were performed in every
village usually in a sacred spot called devastan or in
a mand (circle.)

Music in Goa spans a very broad range of music, from
Goan and foreign-inspired music to more modern trends
with mixtures of genres, ethnic elements and electric
instruments. In recent years, a wide range of skilled
ensembles have helped to raise the profile of Goan
traditional music both nationally and internationally.

‘Woodwind and brass instruments (flute, clarinet,
saxophone, trumpet, horn, euphonium, tuba, etc) and
percussion devices like the bass and snare drum,
tympani, cymbals, xylophone, gongs, etc, were added in
the early nineteenth century. These instruments began
to be used outdoors in the churchyard as well to play
the reveille (alvorada) in the grey light of dawn on
feast days or after Sunday Mass and Vespers. They also
came to be used for funeral and other pompous marches,
processions, pageants and later for public
entertainment in various cities.’

Over the same period, music of various kinds continued
to have a life of its own. There also emerged folk
songs and dances like the mando, dulpod and dekhnni
through a blending of intrinsically native melodies
with western, mainly Italian harmonic devices.

From the last quarter of the nineteenth century, Goan
musicians were recruited to play for military bands at
different Portuguese colonies and for the British.
Soon, Goans were inducted in into the orchestras
playing classical and light classical music, dance
bands in elite ballrooms, hotels, gymkhanas and clubs
all over India and abroad. During the days of the
silent movies, Goans became the chief providers of
background music played in theatres, and when the
movies became talkies, they became the mainstay of the
orchestras in the film recording studios not only as
sidemen and soloists, but as arrangers, composers and
conductors, albeit under famous Indian music
directors.

Musicians manning the leading big bands and the
several nightclub combos in Bombay alone during the
late sixties were almost exclusively Goans.

By then, however, jazz music had begun to evolve new
forms like progressive jazz, bebop and free forms
using complex polyrhythms, dissonant harmonies, jagged
and atonal melodic structures.

It became an esoteric music for appreciation by other
musicians. Though Goan jazzmen quickly got into the
groove, the music itself had lost its large young
audiences to newly emergent rock and roll, pop and
reggae, which marked a return to simpler rhythm. The
new 'beat' consisted of three or more electrified
guitars, with keyboards, drums and a host of 'techno'
electronic gadgetry, attachments and devices like
synthesisers with a multi- toned palette,
auto-rhythms, auto-vamp, drum machines, strobe lights,
etc.

Goa’s popular music tradition continued into the
twentieth century. Just a generation or two back, the
Western music scene was dominated by classical,
semi-classical and dance music like the tango, rumba,
waltz and polka seen mostly at marriage receptions and
other parties.

Many Goan groups reigned supreme in the 60’s and 70’s
playing violins and a range of other non-electronic
instruments like alto-sax, clarinets, etc. There has
been a rapid transformation in music with 12 string
guitars, frame drums, percussions, etc, which swinged
into bebop and rock and roll that has swept everything
in its path.

A lot of the old, traditional Goan musicians could not
make the transition and fell along the path way
forgotten. Their scores were not needed anymore with
brass and horns replaced with electronically charged
gadgets.

But the music played now, is from people of a
tradition or culture foreign to our own mainstream.
It's the measure of distance between ‘here and now’
and ‘there and then.’ Some of the traditional folk
music is hardly played nowadays, maybe because it
seems not in harmony with the modern generation.

The value, of course, is that in hearing a tune
outside of ourselves -- a music from another time or
place, a song outside of our own skin -- we discover
our connections to a wider realm of humanity. BUT, by
appreciating music ‘from somewhere else’ we do not
understand our own place in the world.

Even dramas and tiatros in recent years -- which are
partly intended to raise historical consciousness
among Goans -- almost always use Western style
background music. Very few dramas have attracted my
attention in this regard.

A number of musicians have emerged in recent years
from music schools like the Kala Academy, Goa College
of Music, Pilar Music School, Solfa Music School
(Mapusa), Maestro Fr. Camilo Xavier School of
Music, and other music schools existing in Goa forming
top most ensembles such as Lynx, Sky High, Forefront,
Seby and the Wings, Black Slades, Purple Rain,
Archies, Status4, Cascades, Syndicate, Big City Band,
`India', etc.

Linear and melodic music of Goan bands was well
received till in recent years with some bands exposing
a new era of electronic noise and lip-sync. Music
enthusiasts fear the real art is being played only on
sequenced beats.
Between ‘then’ and ‘now’, the once popular
traditional, original Goan music is now on a brink of
total extinct. A new series of music is seen appearing
on the horizon: a contrast of sound and noise, art and
reality, beauty and ugliness, sanity and insanity,
originality and banality, sound and silence, abstract
and concrete, communicative and solipsistic, normative
and eccentric.

There’s still a tremendous underground swell of
musicians who have no interest in who or what the
latest pop sensation is.
What is the speech in our music and what is the music
in speech? What is the difference between ugly music
and music that expresses ugliness? How can we identify
musical kitsch and how does it differ from the banal
and clichéd?

Looking at the new musicians fresh from schools, it
appears that the next generation of musicians will
comprise mainly vocalists, guitarists and pianists.
‘In other words, it looks like we are producing the
material for beat-groups only.’

The prospects of having the requisite musicians from
the next generation to stage a full ensemble band of
four saxophones, two trumpets, a trombone with piano,
bass and drums is bleak and the chances of putting
together even modest philharmonic or symphony
orchestra for classical music is very remote.

Like all crazes, however, it is just a matter of time
before the trend in the evolution of music will pass.

We all have our sense of musical taste, of course. No
one is asking that we enjoy everything that enters our
eardrums. And thankfully there are no laws that tell
us how to categorize our personal preferences. So feel
free to define ‘music’ the way you want. Well, open
minds hear better music. The next tune that you hear
in a movie – for a particular soundtrack or while the
dialogues are on will definitely make you listen with
the inner sense. The music that makes you weep or
shout or dance with joy might come from an unexpected
place. Contemplate on the tune. It might just be an
African drummer, a Taiwan flute specialist, a

Dear Nalini
I thank you for informing me reg. the Contacto Goa programme. I saw it today at 13.00
Some comments:
1. Almost as usual the programme DID not start at 13.00 but some 12 minutes late!! but that I think it is a caracteristic of the Portuguese people. : total lack of punctuality !!
Here is story related to me by a member of the Portuguese  Committe of Historians who had gone to TOQUIO for a meet of Luso Japanese History. Making fun  of his own group he told me: 'The Japanese group would arrive at the site of the meets two minutes before time, ,,,while we arrived twenty minutes later. In the evening we had a dinner party, After the drinks and snacks we were invited to the banquet hall> The Portuguese group being the guests, would rush to it on seeing all the Jap delicacies,The Japs would come later,.,,and find the table almost empty!!"

2.The first episode had nothing much for us locals, because it depicted a Goan restaurant like those which we have by the dozens.
3. Dito the second: learning  Portuguese with the Help of a Scrab.( if my  spelling  is correct).having studied Portuguese in the Escola Primaria, I dont think that it is the ideal method ,even though one of the damzels said that within 24 hrs she would speak and write perfect Portuguese!!]
. It appeared to me to be a "doctored' declaration of the girl ...and in English !!

4. The third Episode, O yes, just wonderful !! the "Banda da Musica" which we in Goa used to see in our  Processions, weddings, and even...funerals. The last one  which I attended, was that of Vasco Alvares who had given written instructions for it !! Those who knew him will recollect his always jovial personality.
But...one of the musicians said that the "Bandas"were dead after the Portuguese had left. !
True, but not exactly that: the Brass bands vanished from the Goa musical panorama because other forms of music cropped up like musical groups with which they could not compete.
And now, once a year we have the Indian Navy Brass Band giving concerts of Indian and Western Classical Music at the Kala Akademy.IF it comes in Nov,as generally done, I would like to sugggest to you to make an EPISODE of the event.

One point which I did not find proper that you should interview Fr. Eufemiano Miranda, parish Priest of Santa Ines INSIDE   the Church, You had done the same with our Vicar of Pangim, fully dressed for the Sunday Eucarist in Portuguese at 10.30.,in the previous series.
One can film  an Eucarist being celebrated, but interviews within the Church , I find objectionable.specially when it had nothing to do about the Curch as such.

Besides, you did not give a chance to the poor Vicar to say what he wanted: the camera focussed upon him 3-4 times, but hardly for 2 seconds, and Zoomed to some other subject.
It is things like this, which belonged to our past folclore which I feel the 'contactos" should focus.
Once you are in contact with RTPI please request them on my behalf:
Yesterday around 20.50, I went to the TV to see the 21.00 news of NDTV.But as some mts were left I changed to RTPI: another programme about Porto ( repeated today ) was on at the end"
"Contacto GOA: Amanhã "
But amanha at what time ?!! Unfortunatelly this is a common feature of RTPI just like that of a announce programe starting later and NOT to the Dot of the time fixed. like BBC, CNN. Goa 365, NTDC. Star news, etc.

Thanks once again and kind regards to you and to you partner,,,a Rego also !!

Dear Gabriel,

Thanks a lot for the link to such a super collection. Very nice pieces indeed, a couple of which I have never heard before! Is the same music available in sheet format with full vocal/instrumental score? Please do let me know. I must say the quality is really good considering the age factor of these musical gems of our cultural heritage.

What are the copyright details in case say our group here, the'Goan Musical Society Ensemble' would wish to perform in the future any of these pieces to our Goan audiences here in the UK.

Thanks,

JP Cota

Hello Milind,

Just a casual question: the Indian films that are going to be screened in this course and on which discussions are going to be based - are they mostly the normal Bollywood types? If so, do you really think that would be REAL film appreciation? Most of these films are a joke and are produced for the uneducated Indian masses, hardly have any story with substance and it is all about colours, dance and weird special effects that hardly warrants any educated person to attend these, leave alone 'appreciating' these! So thus I wonder, who are the type of people that you mention are already in your waiting list? Surely you can advertise to them directly, can't you, if you claim you already have a long waiting list?

I hope you can elaborate more about your courses in your advertising emails. Many 'citizens of Goa' already have people who know how to appreciate films, but they like to watch good quality films... which warrant appreciation but unfortunately are hardly screened in Goa.

PRESS NOTE

Goan Art Exhibition to be held In Lisbon

* A three-day Global Goan Youth Convention in Lisbon will deliberate on `FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD,' while four Goan artists showcase a collection of 15 paintings at the `Simbiose Indo-Portuguesa de Artes' exhibition at Casa de Goa, Lisbon, June 15-17, 2007.

A global Goan convention -- intended to bring together Goans from all over the world to discuss issues of common interest – will be held at Casa de Goa, Lisbon, Portugal from June 15-17, 2007.
Marking the 20th anniversary of its establishment in Lisbon, Casa de Goa intends to celebrate the many positive contributions of global Goans in the field of fine arts, literature, music, media, education.   Aiming to reinforce second and third generation Goans to keep Goan culture alive in their respective professions and places of residence, the convention which is spread over three days will set into motion interactive dialogues, presentations and discussions in an effort to build cultural bridges between Portugal and India.
Adding an element of innovation to the convention is an art exhibition organized by Goa's media and entertainment personality Ms Ethel Da Costa at Casa de Goa, Portugal. The three-day first of its kind exhibition titled `Simbiose Indo-Portuguesa de Artes' will present a multi-media collection of 15 artworks showcasing the talent of young Goan artists: Chandan Bandekar, Franco Fernandes, Nixon Fernandes and Prasad Pankar.
Says Ms Da Costa,  "The art exhibition will build bridges across Portugal and Goa, as an initiative to take art, culture and the performing arts across the borders.  It sets the ball rolling for many more international creative pursuits in the near future."
The exhibition is supported through the generous patronage of Goan industrialist Shri Deepak Bandekar and Shri Vishwajit Rane. May their tribe increase.
