Film on Portuguese culture on the anvil
(Times of India)

PANAJI: An Indian filmmaker is creating a story that
will offer glimpses of Portuguese culture's lingering
hold over Goa, through the eyes of a Brazilian man,
with "bombshells" from both countries.

Kolkata-based director Indranil Chakravarty's project
will see the likes of Tabu and popular Brazilian
actress Sonia Braga, described by Chakravarty as a
"Brazilian bombshell" who now works mostly in
Hollywood.

Chakravarty said: "It is the story of a Brazilian man
who discovers rather late in his life that he has a
family in Goa. It is also the story of a family over
three generations, a family that breaks up in the year
of the Liberation (as the end of Portuguese rule in
1961 is termed) and comes together, accidentally, 40
years later through one man's journey of
self-discovery."

Goa, a former 451-year-old Portuguese colony, is
central to the story.

The plot moves between Goa, Portugual's capital Lisbon
and Brazilian capital Rio de Janeiro. "As one would
know, there are historical links between these places.
I am not making an arbitrary connection. I couldn't
have worked on the same kind of story with Kolkata at
the centre," says the director.

"It is unfortunate that Goa's rich history has not
been explored sufficiently in cinema. The only
exception that comes to mind is Shyam Benegal's
Trikaal."

Goan pop star Remo Fernandes will do the music track,
which has six songs, and Portuguese singer Sergio
Godinho has offered to compose and sing one song.

Chakravarty studied film direction at the Escuela
Internacional de Cine, Havana, whose founder and
chairman is Nobel-prize winning author Gabriel Garcia
Marquez.

Chakravarty, whose first feature film was The Tamarind
Tree, says he has been involved with the continent
"both emotionally and academically. Goa attracts me
for the rich hub of history that it is."

For many months Chakravarty has been working out the
script, building up the crew and looking for finance.
"I have just returned from Lisbon after a long stay
where I have found a very enthusiastic Portuguese
producer who in turn is pursuing a Brazilian partner.
So now I only need to find an Indian co-producer."

"The research is now almost over and I'm just trying
to finish the script. We start shooting the film in
September 2003, beginning with the Goan section. The
film should be ready for release by March 2004," says
Chakravarty, who was a faculty member for film
direction at Kolkata's Satyajit Ray Film Institute.

To put the film together, funding will have to come
from "20 or more different sources", anticipates the
filmmaker.

He says: "This is not meant to be a Bollywood
blockbuster but the very nature of the project demands
a budget much bigger than the usual offbeat films. The
film is being made with a niche audience in mind. The
interesting aspect is that this niche market is
actually a very big one, all the more so when you are
thinking in global terms," says Chakravarty, who has
made two fiction films in Spanish and several
documentaries and educational programmes in India.

He believes that in Bollywood things are "changing at
a fast pace".

Producers seem more open to new themes, perhaps
"because they realise an offbeat theme is more likely
to appeal to educated urban audiences than the usual
rehashes. In fact, many English-language films are
being made at the moment and mine is just one of
them," says Chakravarty.

Mr. APJ Abdul Kalaam's speech in Hyderabad.

Quote: I have three visions for India. In 3000 years of our history people from all over the world have come and invaded us, captured our lands, conquered our minds. From Alexander onwards. The Greeks, the Turks, the Moguls, the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Dutch, all of them came and looted us, took over what was ours. Yet we have not done this to any other nation. We have not conquered anyone. We have not grabbed their land, their culture, and their history and tried to enforce our way of life on them. Why? Because we respect the freedom of others. That is why my first vision is that of FREEDOM. I believe that India got its first vision of this in 1857, when we started the war of independence. It is this freedom that we must protect and nurture and build on. If we are not free, no one will respect us.

My second vision for India is DEVELOPMENT. For fifty years we have been a developing nation. It is time we see ourselves as a developed nation. We are among top 5 nations of the world in terms of GDP. We have 10 percent growth rate in most areas. Our poverty levels are falling. Our achievements are being globally recognized today. Yet we lack the self-confidence to see ourselves as a developed nation, self-reliant and self-assured. Isn't this incorrect?

I have a THIRD vision. India must stand up to the world. Because I believe that unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. Only strength respects strength. We must be strong not only as a military power but also as an economic power. Both must go hand-in-hand. My good fortune was to have worked with three great minds. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai of the Dept. of space, Professor Satish Dhawan, who succeeded him and Dr. Brahm Prakash, father of nuclear material. I was lucky to have worked with all three of them closely and consider this the great opportunity of my life.

I see four milestones in my career: ONE: Twenty years I spent in ISRO. I was given the opportunity to be the project director for India's first satellite launch vehicle, SLV3. The one that launched Rohini. These years played a very important role in my life of Scientist.

TWO: After my ISRO years, I joined DRDO and got a chance to be the part of India's missile program. It was my second bliss when Agni met its mission requirements in 1994.

THREE: The Dept. of Atomic Energy and DRDO had this tremendous partnership in the recent nuclear tests, on May 11 and 13. This was the third bliss. The joy of participating with my team in these nuclear tests and proving to the world that India can make it, that we are no longer a developing nation but one of them. It made me feel very proud as an Indian. The fact that we have now developed for Agni a re-entry structure, for which we have developed this new material. A Very light material called carbon-carbon.

FOUR: One day an orthopedic surgeon from Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences visited my laboratory. He lifted the material and found it so light that he took me to his hospital and showed me his patients. There were these little girls and boys with heavy metallic calipers weighing over three Kg.each, dragging their feet around. He said to me: Please remove the pain of my patients. In three weeks, we made these Floor reaction Orthosis 300 gram calipers and took them to the orthopedic center. The children didn't believe their eyes. From dragging around a three kg. Load on their legs, they could now move around! Their parents had tears in their eyes. That was my fourth bliss!

Why is the media here so negative? Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why? We are the first in milk production. We are number one in Remote sensing satellites. We are the second largest producer of wheat. We are the second largest producer of rice. Look at Dr. Sudarshan; he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters. I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert land into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news. In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign TVs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology. Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14-year-old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is: She replied: I want to live in a developed India. For her, you and I will have to build this developed India. You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation. Allow me to come back with vengeance. Got 10 minutes for your country? YOU say that our government is inefficient. YOU say that our laws are too old. YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage. YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke, the airline is the worst in the world, and mails never reach their destination. YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits. YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it? Take a person on his way to Singapore. Give him a name - YOURS. Give him a face - YOURS. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground Links as they are. You pay $5 (approx. Rs.60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU comeback to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity. In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai. YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah. YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, "see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else." YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 kmph) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, "Jaanta hai sala main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost." YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand. Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country why cannot you be the same here in India? Once in an interview, the famous Ex-municipal commissioner of Bombay Mr.Tinaikar had a point to make. "Rich people's dogs are walked on the streets to leave their affluent droppings all over the place," he said. "And then the same people turn around to criticize and blame the authorities for inefficiency and dirty pavements. What do they expect the officers to do? Go down with a broom every time their dog feels the pressure in his bowels? In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan. Will the Indian citizen do that here?" He's right. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility. We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms. We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity. This applies even to the staffs who is known not to pass on the service to the public. When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? "It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry." So who's going to change the system? What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbors, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the e distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr. Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand. Or we leave the country and run away. Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England. When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money. Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too.... I am echoing J.F.Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians... "ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY" Lets do what India needs from us.

Goa Revolution Day today

PANAJI, June 17: Goa will celebrate its Revolution Daytomorrow commemorating the beginning of a mass struggle to liberate it from Portuguese rule.  The day commemorates the clarion call given by Dr Ram Manohar Lohia in 1946 to the people of Goa to unite and fight against the Portuguese regime. The call was a turning point in the struggle against the colonial rule.

Governor, Mr Mohammed Fazal and Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar have extended greetings on the eve of the revolution day.

On this day, the sacrifices and valour of the freedom fighters and martyrs are remembered and the state government will honour 58 freedom fighters on the occasion.

Portugal recovering on cod and bananas
SEOUL, June 7 (Reuters): After the disastrous start to their World
Cup campaign, Portugal need all the help they can get and team chef
Helio Loureiro is doing his best to make the players feel better.

Loureiro has brought with him to South Korea some 200 kg of salted
cod, a dish that is never off the menu in Portugal and which the
coastal sea-faring nation boasts it can make in 365 different ways.

Also important to the players, who lost their opening group D game 3-
2 to the United States, are sardines, which come into season in
Portugal in June, when the streets are filled with the smell of the
fish being grilled in annual festivals.

"We brought enough cod to keep homesickness at bay when needs be.
It's not in every meal, just on days off after games, when we also
have sardines and rice with beans," Loureiro said, nodding at a
salver of cod steaks in garlic and butter sauce.

Speaking in the team hotel, Loureiro noted that Portuguese
journalists had already eaten half the team's supply of cod at a
lunch offered by soccer officials and personalities, including great
Portuguese striker Eusebio.

Loureiro, who has been catering for the squad at home and abroad for
six years, said that he had first visited Korea a month ago to check
on food supplies and was satisfied that most of what he needed was
locally available.

The chef said he normally arrived at the team hotel two days early to
check on conditions and local supplies, and to buy enough food to be
ready for the squad's arrival.

"Nowadays with globalisation, you can find produce almost everywhere,
and it isn't hard to get fresh fish as good as in Portugal, and meat
which is just as good, from Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and
even the United States," he said.

Apart from cod, all the squad had to bring with them were some
Portuguese food and drink unavailable elsewhere, like sausages, cured
cheeses and wine from the northern Douro river.

"The players drink a glass of wine at supper, but not on match days,"
Loureiro said.

After tiring games such as the surprise defeat on Wednesday to a
physical US side, the players began their recovery by drinking a
banana milk shake prepared with yoghurt and raisins.

"This helps the body get back into balance and to ingest the
potassium, carbohydrates and sugar which it needs to recover,"
Loureiro said.

Other strict conditions for the team are to eat a low-fat diet, with
semi-skimmed milk and cheese, and green rather than root vegetables,
which Loureiro said had a higher water content.

The players also eat sugary foods only on the day before or after
matches, and Loureiro raises the salt content in his dishes by 10-15
per cent to help them retain fluids while playing in the heat.

Loureiro promised to prepare a special treat for the team if they had
something to celebrate, though they now need to win both their
remaining group D games against Poland and South Korea to be sure of
qualifying for the World Cup's second round.

"If there is, as I hope and I'm certain, there'll be something to
celebrate, it will definitely be a seafood dish, which Portuguese
people adore. Lobster and crab are celebratory dishes and we've also
brought some bottles of good Port wine," he said.

The official spokesman of Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the media that the family persons of diplomatic and consular personnel, as well as the "non-essential" staff in India and in Pakistan, are arriving back home some time this week, a decision made in consonance with similar measures taken by Great Britain and other European Union countries. The Secretary of State for the Portuguese Communities Abroad, on being questioned, informed that it is still too early to speak of "repatriation", which however may come to occur later, depending on the evolution of the Indo-Pakistan crisis, having added that, for the time being, it was a case of "taking precautionary measures while there is still time".

It was also revealed that in Pakistan, besides the diplomats and their family members and the crew of a C-130 Portuguese aircraft which carries on missions in Afghanistan, 30 Portuguese nationals are registered, most of them of Goan origin; while regarding India, there are 2,500 Portuguese citizens registered in Goa, 35 in New Delhi and 14 elsewhere in the country.

GoaNet.

Abraços. - Jorge de Abreu Noronha
==============================

Dear Friend Judas,

My message in English, to which you refer, was followed (in separate e-mail)
by its translation in Portuguese. Is it that you received the former but not
the latter? If so, it is indeed strange.

But there is another thing that worries me: Both the messages were posted by
me on May 30 but they circulated only on June 1. This two-day "gap" had
already occurred with my earlier posts (one in English, followed by another
with its Portuguese version) - for which reason I am hereby requesting the
co-ordinators of this list to look into the matter and do the needful for
the postings to circulate automatically and without delay, as it happens -
for instance - with The Goan Forum and GoaNet.

Portugal to unleash Double Trouble
SEOUL, June 3 (Reuters)

Portugal's Rui Costa and Joao Pinto have formed a
powerful double act since they were world youth
champions together in 1991, and hope the combination
will unsettle defences at the World Cup just as it did
in Euro 2000. ''No, I don't need him (Rui Costa)!''
striker Joao Pinto joked after training yesterday.
''Seriously, I hope it (the pair) will be a trump card
for us.''

Known during a long stint at Italian club Fiorentina
as the 'conductor of the Florentine orchestra,'
midfield playmaker Rui Costa set up a deadly header
for Joao Pinto as Portugal came back from 2-0 down to
win 3-2 against England in Euro 2000.
Portugal reached the semifinals of that tournament,
and are still smarting from their exit due to a golden
goal penalty in extra time against eventual winners
France.

''Sadness remains over the way we were knocked out,
but we are also proud of what we achieved,'' Rui Costa
said.
The team is determined to do well in this tournament,
which is the last chance to shine for players around
the 30 mark like Rui Costa and the diminutive Joao
Pinto, as well as Portugal's other 'golden boys'. The
mature team also includes FIFA's 2001 player of the
year Luis Figo, fresh from winning the Champions
League with Real Madrid, Lazio star Fernando Couto,
and English Premier League defenders Jorge Costa of
Charlton and Liverpool's Abel Xavier.

''We believe this is a great opportunity, because no
Portuguese side has ever gone to a World Cup with as
much credit as this one,'' Rui Costa said. He has had
a frustrating season plagued by injuries at AC Milan,
and had to miss many of the World Cup warm-up games,
but has joined in Portugal's full training sessions
held first in Macao and now under tight security at
Seoul's Military Academy. ''I feel fine, I am going
well, I've forced myself along with my team mates so
that we can reach peak fitness,'' Rui Costa said. Joao
Pinto added that 'players like Rui don't take long to
get back on form.’

Pinto's own fitness and form have been in no doubt,
especially after what fans and opponents alike
consider to have been one of his finest domestic
seasons, in which his Sporting side landed a league
and cup double. Although less prolific as a goalscorer
than team-mates at club and international level, he is
effective in his preferred role of supporting a lone
striker to 'spearhead' the attack.

Now, Joao Pinto and Rui Costa say they can barely wait
for their first Group D clash against the United
States in Suwon on Wednesday before they play Poland
and co-hosts South Korea. ''It's controlled anxiety.
We are more anxious now than in Macao, and are waiting
for our turn,'' he said calmly. ''But we're
experienced players, we can handle anxiety.''

Portugal will need these two men in particular, as
well as the incomparable Figo, if they are to
translate flair and potential into desired results on
the field. Not for a long time have the Portuguese
boasted the kind of line-up they have been able to
assemble for this World Cup. They could well be the
dark horses.

Dear Friends,

GOA DAY - 2002

Thanks to the timely initiative of Rene Barreto in 1999, the yearly celebrations of a Goa Day became a reality as from 2000, wherever there are Goans or descendants of Goans, be it in various cities, towns and villages of Goa be it in the diaspora. And I suppose everybody recollects why August 20 was selected as the ideal date for those celebrations: to honour the day when our language "came of age" (if I may say so) by being included in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution and by being in this way recognised as one of the national languages of the country.

The 2001 celebrations were held under the banner of Solidarity, and August 19 of that year, being a Sunday, saw for the first time the GOA DAY being celebrated in Lisbon.

In this year 2002 let us dedicate the celebrations in a very special way to our avoi-bhas, to our mother tongue Konkani. It is true that many of us in the diaspora, and particularly those of the second and third generations - born far from the tiny state of Goa and many of them with difficulties in maintaining contact with their roots -, do not know to write or sometimes even to speak the language and, of those who do write it, most do so in the Roman script while unfortunately this script is being discarded in Goa thus affecting adversely, for instance, the tiatrs which have been traditionally written in "Romi Konknni" by Christian tiatrists. But, irrespective of whether we know or not the language of our state, it is undeniable that amchi bhas is the basis of our "Goanness" and, if only for this reason, we are dutybound to honour it.

And why do I say that the 2002 Goa Day should give special relevance to our language? At least for three strong reasons: February 4th of this year was the fifteenth anniversary of the Language Act by which Konkani was approved as the official language of Goa by Goa's Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly); today, May 30th, marks the fifteenth anniversary of Goa's statehood which would not have been possible if the territory didn't have its own official language; and August 20th will see the 10th anniversary of the unanimous approval, by the two houses of the Indian Parliament, of the law which included Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

In Portugal there is an additional reason: it was in May 1987 that an association of Goans, Damanese, Diuese, Dadraites and Nagar-Haveliites was informally instituted, under the designation of "Casa de Goa", which was later legalised through a notarial deed on July 15 of the same year. It is thus the year of its fifteenth anniversary. The Goa Day - 2002 will therefore be recorded in Portugal, in August this year, as "Dia de Goa, Damão e Diu" (Goa, Daman and Diu Day), the organsing committee being busy in the planning of the multifarious celebrations along the period of 17th to 20th August. (Note: As in terms of the Portuguese "Estado da India" Dadra and Nagar Haveli were part of the district of Daman, for those residing in Portugal "Daman" includes those two enclaves which were annexed by India and turned into a Union Territory on August 11, 1961).

Coming back to the language. Many Goans, especially the Christians, and particularly those in the diaspora, resent the fact that, when Konkani gained the status of a national language of India, it was approved that only Devnagri would be its true and legal script. A year ago I advocated that, our mother-tongue being the only one that is written in five, six or more different scripts (which is one of its richest facets), we should struggle to have this richness officially recognised. I remember having then been strongly opposed by some quarters. Recently however I was glad to learn that the Government of Karnataka had decreed that in that state the official script for the Konkani language would be Kannada and none else. Why then can't we have the Romi Konknni legalised in Goa? Let's face the facts squarely: in Karnataka (Mangalore, Karwar, etc.) Konkani is written in Kannada script, in some other region of the same state in Tulu, in Kochi in Malayali script, in Gujarat in Gujarati and Urdu scripts; so why not in Devnagri and Romi in Goa?

Let's be proud not only of being Goans but of being Konkanis, and let's honour our bhas, whatever be the script in which we write it. And - please don't forget - let's all make an effort to learn (those who don't know) or to improve (those of us who know) the Konkani language. Vaman Ragunath Shennoy Varde Valaulikar, better known by his pen name of Shennoy Goembab, who dedicated the last twenty years of his life to research the language, literature and history of the Konkanis, was able to prove that Konkani is not a dialect of Marathi but an independent language (in fact with far longer existence than Marathi). So, let's cherish our language as one of our most prized treasures.

Viva Timor-Leste!

At zero hours of today - local time (18h30 of the 19th in India and 14h00
also of the 19th in Portugal) a new nation was born: the Democratic Republic
of East Timor (Republica Democratica de Timor-Leste).

The island of Timor measures about 470 x 100 km with an area of 32,300 sq km
and a population of around 1,400,000. The Portuguese reached the island
somewhere between 1512 and 1516. In 1651 the western half of the island
(with the exception of Oecussi-Ambeno) was conquered by the Dutch and, when
Indonesia attained independence in 1945, was integrated in this country.
East Timor + Oecussi-Ambeno, with an area of 18,900 sq km, remained under
Portuguese domination until the Fretilin freedom movement made an unilateral
declaration of independence on November 25, 1975. This independence was not
recognised by any country and ten days later Indonesia marched in,
forcefully occupied the territory and later annexed it as its 27th province.
However, this occupation and annexation were also not recognised (except by
Australia) and the United Nations continued to classify it as a Portuguese
territory under foreign occupation. The East Timorese continued to fight for
their freedom and finally an internationally supervised referendum held late
August 1999 dictated by an overwhelming majority (around 78%) its secession
from Indonesia. Horrible killings, destruction and pillages followed, at the
hands of Timorese "militia" supported by Indonesian military people. Between
1942 and 1945 East Timor faced Japanese occupation, during which a few
thousands of the local population died. In mid-1975, two thousand died as a
result of pre-indepence struggles among three freedom movements then
existing, and in the long period of about 24 years of Indonesian domination
(December 1975 - October 1999) the population is estimated to have been
decimated of about 220,000 persons. (Present population of East Timor:
approx. 800,000).

Indonesian domination was followed by an interim administration by the
United Nations. Two years after the referendum, on August 30, 2001, a
Constituent Assembly was elected and Fretilin, the majority party, formed an
interim government headed by Mari Alkatiri, with Nobel Peace Prize
Co-awardee Jose Ramos Horta as Minister of Foreign Affairs. In April this
year Xanana (Jose Alexandre) Gusmao, contesting as a candidate of nine
parties, was elected President of the future country with over 85% of votes.
The Assembly, meanwhile, voted to continue to function after independence,
now as a regular Parliament.

Yesterday, May 19th, there was about to be a major diplomatic incident when
six Indonesian warships entered East Timorese territorial waters (and one of
them even went as far as berthing at the port of the capital) without
seeking prior clearance, allegedly to render protection to their President
Ms Megawati Sukarnoputri when she later came to attend the independence
ceremonies. They were ordered out and, fortunately, obeyed.

Besides elaborating and voting the constitution, the Constituent Assembly
also approved the national flag and anthem and decided that Portuguese and
the local Tetum would be the national languages of East Timor.

The venue selected for the independence ceremonies was a place 8 km distant
from the capital city of Dili, by name of Taci Tolo (= Three Lagoons) which
is now to
be renamed to honour the country's martyrs, many of whose dead bodies were
"buried" by the Indonesians in these lagoons. By 20h30 of the 19th (local
time) an open-air Holy Mass was attended by a crowd estimated at over
200,000. The main celebrant was the Vatican's permanent representative at
the United Nations Archbishop Renato Martino, at the special invitation of
Mgr. Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo, Administrator Apostolic of the diocese of
Dili and co-awardee (with Ramos Horta) of Nobel Peace Prize. The celebrant
was sided by Bishop Belo and by the Administrator of East Timor's only other
diocese (Baucau) Bishop Basilio do Nascimento. I could not count the number
of cardinals, bishops and priests present. One could see in a prominent
place a statue of Our Lady of Fatima offered to Timor by the Portuguese
Marian Sanctuary and flown in from Portugal a few days before. The Mass,
interspersed with traditional religious songs in Tetum and dances, was
celebrated in Portuguese and lasted for about two hours, with the reading of
a message from Pope John Paul II as the last item. An inter-religious
celebration joining Catholics, Protestants, Buddhists and Muslims then took
place. These religious celebrations were followed, for another three hours,
by cultural programmes from East Timor's thirteen districts and the small
island of Atauro (which is in front of Dili).

At zero hours the UN flag was lowered while Barbara Hendricks sang
"Freedom".
The Secretary-General of the United Nations Mr. Kofi Anan then made a speech
in English (immediately translated in Tetum) and handed over the
administration to the Speaker of the Parliament Mr. Francisco Guterres who
then read the proclamation of the act of independence (or rather, as the
people like to call it, of the restoration of their
ten-day-long independence cut short by the Indonesians in December 1975).
The national flag having then been unfurled, the Speaker invested Xanana
Gusmao as President of the Republic. Xanana addressed to the new nation and
to the invitees (over ninety Heads of State and of Government, among whom
the Presidents of Indonesia and Portugal and the Prime Ministers of Portugal
and Australia, and also Bill Clinton during whose tenure as President of the
USA the UN intervened in East Timor in 1999) in English, Portuguese, Baasa
(Indonesian language) and Tetum.

Later during the day, President Xanana Gusmao, who is a Catholic (as the
majority of the population) formally invested the Government headed by Mari
Alkatiri (Muslim), the Government approved the resolutions to seek admission
in the United Nations Organisation and in CPLP (Commonwealth of Portuguese
Speaking Countries), and the Prime Ministers of East Timor and Australia
signed the agreement for the exploration of the petroleum-rich "Timor Gap".
The new country, one of the poorest in the world, is expected to start
drawing revenue from this exploration wef 2005. In the meantime it will
continue to get support from the international community. Portugal will also
continue to assist its former colony at least for another year, not only
financially but also by way of training the armed forces and security
personnel and as far as education (especially as regards the language) is
concerned.

East Timor is going to be the eighth (and last) member of CPLP (Commonwealth
of Portuguese Speaking Countries), side by side with Angola, Brazil, Cape
Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and Sao Tome & Principe.

Viva Timor-Leste!

Subject: Basilio Magno''s Goa Suraj Party''s Anthem

Dear Goemkars,

You know Goa is getting ready for early elections on 30 May 2002,
and this time there is a new political party - Goa Su-Raj taking
part with good and honest candidates.

All those who have been complaining of bad governments in Goa for the
past many years, may now happily rally around this party, whose
president is Mr. Floriano Lobo, and vote for its candidates who can,
and those who cannot vote being in foreign countries may support it
with financial help. www.goasu-raj.org

I was asked to contribute my share as a songwriter, and I have
composed an anthem for the Party, which has been approved by its
Managing Committee. This is what Floriano emailed to me last week:
"Dear Basilio, I heard the tune of the Anthem today from the music
maestro at Pilar Music School. I am very pleased with the lyrics as
well as the music. So is also the maestro.
-Floriano

Here are the words in English and its Konkani version:

GOA SU-RAJ ANTHEM

words and music by Basilio Magno
verse:

Goa Su-Raj is the Movement of the people,
Come and join it to make it strong and stable:
Let Goans all unite with just one aim in mind,
To free Goa from corruption and of its kind.
You are the ray of hope on Goa's political scene,
To win back people's pride and ev'ry Goan's dream:
To live in honour, pace and harmony,
Goa Su-Raj Party, that is your destiny.

Refrain:
Goa Su-Raj, Goa Su-Raj,
You're the Party of ev'ry Goan's heart;
Be it Hindu, be it Christian,
We'll be with you always right from the start.
Keep your head high and onward march,
Surely, we'll win with you Goa Su-Raj.

Maria Rubia,
Eu tenho aprendido a amar a India e
software.
feliz.
Um abraço à todos vocês,
Elisangela
