Goan carnival to begin on March 1

PANAJI: Many single out Goa for its beach charm. But
its not all chilling out and roasting on the
palm-fringed sands. That’s for the predictable
tourist. There is a lot more beyond the horizon.

There has been a sudden spurt of ebullient events in
Goa, like the most awaited summer four days fiesta
'Carnival' - starting barely 48 hours from now.
According to N Suryanarayana, Director Of Tourism,
this year's Carnival will be a bit diverse in contrast
to the early ones where the very conventional and
ethnic essence of Goa will be conserved spaced out
from the typical commercial ones.

There will be traditional floats depicting popular
lullabies with capricious and multihued spectacles on
the streets, beginning on March 1, 2003 till March 4,
2003.

According to Mr Joquim Telis, President of the Panaji
Carnival Committee, the concept of having a commercial
annual event like Carnival in Goa is also to herald
'Lent'-a 45-days fasting period in the Christian
community.

The carnival will be commemorated in four different
places like Panaji, Margao, Vasco and Mapusa - Quepem
on four different days overflowed with jollity and
carousing along with the monarch of the festival,
'King Momo' and his consort who will entertain the
holidaymakers.

Around 60 huge floats are estimated to participate in
the Carnival in Panaji including 24 clowns, 15
conventional Goan floats and rest will be corporate
floats booked by Multi National Companies (MNCs) like
Bharat Petrochemical Limited (BPCL), Below Beer,
Pepsi, BSNL, LIC, Income Tax and Fun-Junkers.

Customarily, Carnival floats are artistic handiworks
to add to the desires towards drawing attention on
various aspects of social and cultural ethnicity that
subsist in the present-day Goan society. The dancers
add up to the vivacity to the parades that line up the
Capital streets in Goa with thousands amass to behold
the very Goan exotica.

The event is expected to be a fun-filled one with
people smearing balloons and colours on each other,
instead of the flour, eggs, fruit and water, which was
used in earlier times, said Mr Telis.

The rural community will have its own charismatic and
conventional aspect with traveling troupes performing
in different areas with colourful costumes and merry
inebriation, which is a part of the slice of the
spirit of fun.

With nightlife in Goa turning exciting with chill,
spills and thrill, the usual mood will be as tranquil
as ever with the sand the moon and the pounding waves.
This is not all as Goa is expected to take part in its
second Carnival nicked named ' 'Shigmo' which will set
in motion on March 19 till March 24, 2003, accompanied
by the fanfare of drum beats and the epic enactions of
Mythology.

The Shigmo festival is usually colourful with the
vivid vibrancy that hues the festivities and bedeck
every area that is celebrating, with music of the Dhol
and conches.

Meanwhile, although, the Goan Carnival has turned into
a pageantry of sorts, it has yet managed to navigate
across the globe and attracted rich (Foreign) and the
poor (Domestic) tourists alike for the unbridled
festivity, which is just, round the corner.

Dear friends,

“Supergoa.com” is a site in Portuguese,of mr. Constantino Xavier, a grandson of my Fontainhas Ward,and a student of Political Sciences and  Internacional Relations, in Lisbon.Recently,we had the “FONTAINHAS FESTIVAL” organized by the Heritage Action Group,the Pangim Municipal Council and the Government of Goa.

Constantino gave me the honour of being appointed the “reporter” of the “Supergoa” !    The sites indicated below, in his letter carry my report,along with a cartoon of myself  by the wellknown cartoonist “Alexyz,”who was kind enough to picture me better than what I actually look.!!

“Supergoa.com” é um site em Portugues, da direcção de Constantino Xavier,neto do meu bairro Fontainhas, estudante de Ciencia Politica e Relações Internacionais em Lisboa .No mes passado, nós tivemos neste bairr,o o FESTIVAL DAS FONTAINHAS.organizado pelo Goan Heritage Action Group com a colaboração da Camara Municipal de Pangim e do Governo de Goa.O Festival foi um tremendo sucesso. Hi there,

The heading who can get me a passport???????????portuguese.What did it mean.
The write up on www.colaco.net  clearly explains that we are not looking for
passport but it should be read as portuguese Nationality. What was Mr. Glen
Monteiro telling us? Sorry if I am wrong is it Montiero or is it Monteiro.

Caros Amigos,

A reacção de vários leitores da minha carta, leva-nos a confirmar que não existe nenhuma lingua chamada ‘BRASILEIRA’, e até a Constituição do Brasil especifica que a lingua nacional desse pais é o português.Assim,como muito bem diz, o meu amigo Paulo Colaço Dias- um goês estabelecido em Londres- e outros amigos brasileiros, haveria talvez uma pequena minoria de brasileiros que gosta de declarar que a sua lingua é o “brasileiro”.

Este facto linguistico  existe também nos paises onde se fala o inglês, como os Estados Unidos, Canada, Austrália,etc. Cá na India , a nossa Constituição inclui o inglês entre as linguas nacionais ( dado o multilinguismo deste país).E assim tivemos e temos um grande número de escritores indianos que se tem marcado na literatura inglesa, tendo até ganho prémios internacionais : os Nobelistas Rabindranath Tagore e Aparna Sen,o falecido Presidente da Republica dr.Sarvapalli Radhakrisnan,Jahawarlal Nehru,Salman Rashid, o poeta goês Dom Morais,etc. Hoje , haveria na India, maior número de pessoas que falam o inglês do que na própria Inglaterra !!

Nas traduções de inglês para português também se dão por vezes, casos intessantes que confirmam o velho ditado:”tradutor…traidor”. Um exemplo: quando nos anos “40, eu era aluno do Liceu, o nosso professor pe.Antonio Garcia s.j.( que o Senhor lhe dê o eterno descanço) levou-nos para um retiro na “CASA DE RETIROS”, no pictoresco promontório de Baga. Sucedeu estar ali um muito conhecido belga Pe.Le.Tellier,a quem o pe.Garcia pediu que nos desse uma palestra,falando em inglês que o pe.Garcia ia traduzindo. À certa altura,depois de o pe. LeTelier nos ter falado da vida desbravada que levara na sua juventude:

Pe,LT:” Finally, my mother advised me to go for a RETREAT…and I came back RELIEVED.

Pe.Garcia:Finalmente, a minha mãi mandou-me à RETRETE e eu voltei aliviado”!!!

A nossa  estrondosa gargalhada  quebrou o silêncio da Casa de Retiros,e o pe.LeTellier ficou à rasca sem perceber porque um acontecimento tão importante da sua vida provocava essa reação!!

Talvez seja do interesse dos leitores saber sobre  a influencia da lingua portuguesa na Àsia. Para isso aconselho, consultarem a “opus magna” do goês Mons.Sebastião Rodolfo Dalgado  intitulada:”INFLUÊNCIA DO VOCABULÁRIO PORTUGUÊS EM LINGUAS ASIÁTICAS :abrangendo cerca de 50 idiomas”-1913-Imprensa da Universidade,Coimbra.pgs.249.

A maior influência teria sido, naturalmente, nos territórios coloniais,como o antigo Estado da India Portuguesa( Goa, Damao e Diu), Macau e Timor. Em Goa, vemos isto nos muitos vocábulos da nossa lingua materna- o concanim.E por vezes deturpados, ao longo do tempo, e assim tem a sua piada que gostarão de ler:

1.”vasimborada”  Em portugues, “vá-se embora” é um frase muito normal,mas em Goa significa: …”desapareça!”…”RUA!!”, a tal ponto que a frase degenerou-se no substantivo:”vasimborada”,eg, “dei-lhe uma vasimborada ” ie,  “mandei-o às malvas”,etc.Espero que este termo será um dia incluido num Dicionário da Lingua Portuguesa.!

2.”Pot sêgur”- Em Caranzalém, uma aldeia à beira mar, existia um imagem dedicada à “Senhora do Porto Seguro”, onde os marujos das naus portuguesas, iam resar ao deixar Goa, pedindo à Virgem que lhes desse uma boa viagem.E o mesmo começaram a fazer os pescadores da aldeia ao irem ao mar nos seus barcos. No decorrer dos séculos, a palavra “PORTO SEGURO”  degenerou-se em “POT SÊGUR”.Ora “Pot” na nossa lingua materna ( o concanim), significa: ventre, seio, barriga.E agora a imagem é venerada pelas mulheres grávidas que anseiam que o seu ventre esteja “sêgur” até o feliz  dia do parto.

3.”pimenta putquipari”- quando as naus de Albuquerque chegaram à Velha Goa, ele autorizou os seus soldados, o saque tradicional de todos os conquistadores. Os homens correram à busca dos “Bairros” para esse fim, para saciar as suas saudades corporais….Um deles encontrou uma moça, muito gira, em garrido traje regional,a vender uma pimentinha vermelha que ele nunca vira. Abaixou-se para admirar a pimenta…e a donzela indegena.! Pegou numa  e meteu na bôca para logo dar um urro: ”PUTA QUE A PARIU”. O zé-povinho à volta pensou que esse era o nome da pimentinha na lingua do conquistador e o termo ficou como:”putquiparri ”que até hoje esta em voga para a …malagueta brazileira.!!O termo atravessou mares e continentes, e escreve-me um goês, que vive em Mondevideu, que ali é conhecida como “putquipariuu”!!

4.” Tantiam add go, Sacramenta”-nos tempos em que o latim era obrigatório nos actos litúrgicos da Igreja, o “Tantum ergo sacramentum” era um hino que começava a Benção do Santissimo, comum na Missa conventual das nossas igrejas e capelas. Assism o que ides ler,não é propriamente uma degeneração do português,mas do latim,a”mãi” da lingua portuguesa..Numa igreja, o Mestre Capela começava o hino entoando, ao som de um hármonio alquebrado e  desafinado:”Tantiam add go,Sacramenta” que em concanim, significa “Traga os ovos, Sacramenta”.!!Porque é que o bom homem se lembrava de pedir à sua mulher, Sacramenta, para trazer ovos…nunca ninguém comprendeu.!!

Falei-vos de Goa,mas acho que Damão também exibe a influência da lingua portuguesa em especial no seu sector cristão,. Uma vez que estive lá ,fui,à tardinha, ver o bairro onde os cristãos residem. Tem o bom hábito de resarem o terço à Virgem Maria,junto do cruzeiro, e ouvi-los era realmente interessante para ver a tonalidade e o sotaque,que me soavam assim:”AV MARI CHA DE GRACE, SINOR EH CONVUSCU,BENDIT SOI VOS ENTR MULIERS,BENDIT FRUT VOSSE VENTR JESUU- SANT MARI, MAM DE DEUS, ROGUE POR NOS POBR PICADORS,AGOR E NA HOR DA NOSS MORTI.  AMEN”!!

O intercambio luso-indiano, em consequencia do descobrimento do Vasco da Gama e da conquista de Goa,a par dos aspectos negativos do colonialimo,converses forçadas, Inquisição,etc,certamente teve aspectos construtivos de um intercambio em muitos campos.E devido a isso, palavras indianas penetraram no portugues.Citaria somente um:ouvi em Lisboa de um amigo que na sua aldeia se fazia um doce chamado “XRICA’ que se dizia ser de origem indiana.Quanto me explicou como era feito, vi que se tratava do muito popular ‘XRICANDD” um doce feito de nata.

Este fenómeno de mudança de sotaque, de significado  e de ortografia,dar-se-ia assim quando qualquer lingua passa da área do seu berço para qualquer outro sitio,devido às conquistas , emigrações,intercambios culturais e comerciais.

Portanto,  temos de admitir que a lingua do Brasil é o português e que esta lingua também se espalhou como o inglês, para outras regiôes onde os dois povos colonizadores expandiram os seus impérios.

E vá lá, para terminar, vou contar-vos duas anedotas:uma dos últimos anos do regime português em Goa.e a outra das relações luso brasileiras:

O Governador de Goa chamou o seu Secretário, Coronel  Castanheda(nome ficticio que lhe dou,…afim de não ser identificado) e disse-lhe que mandasse um telegrama ao governador de Damão,Tenente Castanhola(dito) de que os dois iriam na quartafeira de visita a Damão. Ora,o Coronel atrapalhou-se com a redaccão do telegrama,pois teria de tratar por “V.Exa”um Tenente. Depois de muito pensar, redigiu o telegrama:S.EXA GOVERNADOR GOA, ACOMPANHADO DE M.EXA,SECRETARIO, VISITAMOS V.EXA,GOVERNADOR DAMAO, PROXIMA QUARTA” O Tenente,de uma bagagem literaria modesta, ficou à rasca para compreender o que fossem os termos antes de cada designação e respondeu por telegrama:”V.EXA GOVERNADOR DAMAO DESEJA BOA VIAGEM A S.EXA GOVERNADOR GOA E M.EXA SECRETARIO”

A veracidade desta outra, seria confirmada pelos meus leitores portugueses.O Presidente da República de Portugal, chegou à Brasilia, em visita oficial, acompanhado da sua esposa, mulher linda que trazia um diamante ainda mais lindo.!!O Pres.brazileiro com a sua cortesia e o seu sotaque,curvou-se, beijou a mão da Senhora, e notanto a rica joia, pergunta-lhe “É  Dii-amantche?” A senhora portuguesa perdeu a a cabeça, e respondeu-lhe ríspidamente:” Do amante!!…que insulto! Sr. Presidente!!…é do meu marido !!”

Enfim, os sotaques regionais, a transformação no significado dos vocábulos e outras metamorfoses por que uma lingua pode passar,de uma região para outra, não são motivo que justificam a mudança do nome da lingua original.

A lingua brasileira nao existe !!

O que existe e' a lingua portuguesa falada no Brasil.

Assim como existe a lingua inglesa falada nos EUA.

 

Certas palavras escrevem-se de maneira diferente e podem ate' ter um significado diferente. Isto e' valido para o portugues falado no Brasil em relacao ao portugues falado em Portugal como tambem para o ingles falado na America e Canada' em relacao ao ingles do Reino Unido.

 

A lingua do Brasil e' o Portugues. Bem como a lingua dos EUA e' o ingles.

O Brasil e' um pais de lingua oficial portuguesa. Pode have certamente algumas diferencas, mas pelo menos 95% e' comum.

A lingua brasileira nao existe. Eu nunca ouvi nenhum brasileiro dizer que fala brasileiro. Pelo contrario, a maior parte deles diz que fala portugues.

 

Mas se realmente ha' brasileiros que dizem que a lingua deles nao e' portugues mas sim o brasileiro, creio que, provavelmente, serao uma minoria muito pequena.

Está a correr uma intessante  troca de ideas sobre a lingua portuguesa em Portugal e no Brasil. O sr.Teodalva deu-nos uma grande lista das diferenças existentes. .Este assunto, leva-me a fazer uma pergunta:  A LINGUA QUE SE FALA NO BRASIL É  “ BRASILEIRO” OU “PORTUGUÊS”?!    Houve dois incidentes que me levam a fazê-la  e que vos relato:

 

1.Maio de 1996- Minha mulher e eu iamos de comboio de Madrid a Lisboa.Estava no mesmo compartimento, mais um casal e após os cumprimentos protocolares em inglês( que todos conhecem) continuamos  a conversar nessa lingua.A certa altura, eles fizeram entre si um comento que compreendemos e eu perguntei:  ”Os Srs. são portugueses?”   Não eram ,mas sim brasileiros,sendo ele Professor numa Universidade.  Continuamos a conversar, já agora em português- eles com um sotaque brasileiro e nós…”portuGOÊS”( pois somos de Goa-India).Então passou-se este diálogo:

 

EU.: “ há muita diferença entre o português de Portugal e o que se fala no Brasil?”

ELE: ‘ Nós no Brasil, não falamos português, mas BRASILEIRO!! Perante o meu espanto, continua:  ”….assim como o português derivou do latim e é uma  lingua independente, a nossa lingua derivou do português e é hoje o ‘BRASILEIRO”

 

2.Junho de 2002. Estavamos no Canada.  Fomos ver as famosas QUEDAS DO NIAGARA. Quando  sentados num banco a admirar essa maravilha, passou por nós, um grupo de turistas e a minha mulher comenta :  ”estão a falar em português…”  Ouvindo-a um cavalheiro do grupo pára, e diz-nos: “Não,  senhora…, NÃO estavamos a falar em português…mas em brasileiro”!!

 

Dois encontros,afastados na distancia e no tempo, quando sucedeu ouvirmos a mesma opinião.Dai a minha pergunta,pois não posso pronunciar-me sobre o assunto,  uma vez que não sou nem portugues nem brasileiro

 

Mas há um facto que parece dar-lhes razão: li em tempos, sobre um “TRATADO ORTOGRAFICO LUSO- BRASILEIRO”. Ora se a lingua é a mesma, a ortografia também o deve ser.E que eu saiba, não existem tratados similares com os outros paises  como a Angola... Moçambique….Timor,que adaptaram o português como  sua lingua oficial,mesmo que isso não signifique que toda a sua população fale essa lingua.

 

Dai, submeto o tema aos meus leitores para um diálogo:

Portuguese is my second language.

You should be able to change the keyboard properties on your pc.

The Brazilian Portuguese keyboard setting has the best. It has all the
English plus the accents.

Terei imenso gosto poder de alguma forma ajudar a
conhecer e divulgar coisas de Goa relacionadas com a

Afinal Goa esteve mais de 451 anos sob administração

portuguese we are different from the actual Indians no doubt we are indians
by nationality, but our behavior, and lifestyle are all that of a portuguese
family, that is why it makes people like us from the rest of indians, In

I am sure that Yes many Goans Women were raped by the indian Army this may be
true.  I am not sure of what the situation for Goans are like in India.  But
from my own relatives and people i know there they all seem to be in good
jobs and also work for the Government.  I think even one of the defence
ministers for India is from Goa so your claims of discrimination i think are
incorrect.
   My point in the last email was that talking to a lot of snobby Goans who
dont call themselves INDIan but either from GOA or Portugal but never mention
being INDIAN.  I am an Indian from Goa.  Before the portuguese entered MY Goa
it was meant to be a very beautiful place even better then today it was
described as one of the jewels of India and compared to Australia in its
beauty.  But this was soon milked by our masters of the time the Portuguese.
Which many Goans like Sarah find her roots inn.  I wonder what the Portuguese
would have done if WE the Indians went to Portugal and  Great Britain and
imposed Hinduism and Islam and Temples, etc.  They would probably lets us do
this right.................................NOT!!!!!!and start a War on  us
like they are doing now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dual citizenship I think is a Great Idea for Indians.  This will make having
money and property in India a lot easier for us.  It will increase the amount
of investment in the country and give more opportunities for businesses.
There are many indians who are abroad who are in good positions to help there
villages in India for example i know there are many Sikhs who already do
this.  So please explain STAN why are these INDIANS
FAKE??????????????????????MR KNOW IT ALL!!!!!!!and u too

I've been following the dual citizenship argument for sometime now with
equal astonishment and amusement. At last the government has acted, albeit
conditionally. The biggest stumbling block was the citizens of Pakistan that
would have a strong case too.

It's hard to understand what all the fuss is about? Most countries allow it
and there is a strong case that it'll do more good for this country and its
Diaspora than harm it. All those who are crying foul, if there are any kids
reading, a perfect example of 'grapes are
sour'.

Right from the origin of the human species, people around the world, went in
search of greener pastures. It's human nature and no
matter what people say, it's a natural instinct of survival. The whole basis
of changing one's citizenship in today's world stems out of better
prospects. When you mean better prospects it's not merely economic but goes
beyond. Sometimes for better jobs, recognition, research &
development, a better life, escaping persecution, dignity of labour,
circumstances perhaps voluntary or involuntary, natural or man-made,
greener pastures, etc. Lets face it, is there anyone who wouldn't want a
better life?

Given a choice to get a scholarship to study in an European or US
University, would you accept it? Well, that's the reason hundreds of
thousands of students answer entrance exams to get a score and obtain a
scholarship. Millions of Indians work elsewhere around the world not because
they like it but circumstances have lead them that way. Having said that I
don't want to marginalize our system of education, of which I'm a proud
advocate and product of. We can proudly boast of some of the best
educational institutes in the world. Yes they might not be perfect but its a
start and in most cases a life. At the same time I don't mean it's the next
best thing to happen to every Indian. I respect the decision too of those
who might have had the opportunity and thought otherwise. There are millions
of examples that I needn't delve into; people who have made it big by
staying put and fair play to them.

Holding a citizenship of another country gives you certain privileges like
not requiring a work permit, access to social institutions, public welfare,
property, etc. Likewise dual citizenship
gives you similar privileges, besides not requiring a visa to visit the land
of your birth, ability to invest freely, the privileges you might have
previously held but cease to do today. Given a choice, who wouldn't choose
the privilege of being close to the people you grew up with and
you love. Moreover Goa is a paradise, the more you miss it, the more you
realise how blessed we are in terms of its natural bounty and beautiful warm
people.

I admire the sheer arrogance and audacity of these people who bring into
question our loyalties. They need to question their loyalty,
ignorance and naiveté. What loyalty are we talking about? Merely standing in
attention and singing the anthem when the tricolour is raised? Putting on a
kurta-dhoti-topi? Belonging to a particular religion or party? This is a
country where barely 4% earning people pay their taxes,we abet corruption,
have given politics a whole new meaning, abuse people's human rights trying
to be their so called 'social police', manipulate the illiterate instead of
educating them, increasing fundamentalism, destroy the existing
infrastructure, abuse the environment, etc.

Secondly who gives a person the right to question someone else's loyalty?
That should be left to the constitution, never to the human interpretation;
full stop.

Addressing a press conference at the Congress House, here this evening, Ms Sawant said the government has released an advertisement in local dailies inviting applications for filling in vacancies for the posts of junior engineers and stenographers in Electricity Department. She said the department has asked the candidates to furnish 15 years residence certificate from the taluka mamlatdars. Ms Sawant said that the department seeks 15-year domicile certificate from Goan youth, but the period is relaxed for the candidates from neighbouring states. “This is gross injustice being meted out to the Goan unemployed youth,” Ms Sawant said, and added that the government should clarify the recruitment criteria. The department has released an advertisement in local dailies inviting applications to fill 37 junior engineer (elect apprentice) posts by the chief electrical engineer and asking the Goan youth to produce 15 years residence certificate. However, the period has been relaxed for the candidates applying from neighbouring states. Ms Sawant said there are a number of unemployed engineers available in Goa and suspected some ‘hidden motive’ in relaxing the domicile period for the candidates from neighbouring states. Ms Nirmala Sawant demanded immediate withdrawal of the said advertisement and seeks amendment to the rules for the benefit of the Goan youth. She stated that if the advertisement is not withdrawn within the stipulated time than Congress will be forced to follow the path of agitation. Advertisement

Do you know that countless goan women were raped by the Indian Army during
the Liberation of Goa and that the Indian army indulged in looting and
mayhem.

As for being a real Indian - Messrs Vajpayee and the entire BJP government
have introduced and supported dual citizenship? does that make them fake
Indians as they have legalized acquiring dual citizenships.
