Boa tarde,

- acompanhar e divulgar igualmente eventos e notícias relacionadas

Basta seguir as instruções. Em caso de dificuldade, basta aceder a
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/forum_portugal_goa
ou enviar uma mensagem em branco para
forum_portugal_goa-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Cumprimentos,
Constantino Hermanns Xavier

-------
This is an introductory message for all potentially interested in
joining the new initiative Forum Portugal-Goa. This is an-Internet
based discussion forum on the relations between Goa and Portugal,
with special emphasis on the contemporary period. Today there is a
renewed interest of both Portuguese and Goan researchers, investors
and artist in reshaping the axis of cooperation between Goa and
Portugal, moving away from the lethargic study of the historical
colonial period and its legacy. The group is of open-access to all
those who share the following interests:
- to study Goa in a multidisciplinary approach
- to invest in Goa, in the economic and commercial sector, as well
as in young and innovative entrepreneurship
- to follow and promote also events and news related to India in
general and the Portugal-India relations.
- to promote the exchange of ideas and projects as well as the
exchange of people between Goa and Portugal, in different areas

The knowledge of Portuguese is not compulsory, as information may be
circulated in both Portuguese and English, though members are
invited to attach small translations of the main message subject in
the other language.

Goa Church Laments Abuse Of Media Freedom After Priest Is Charged With
Child Abuse

By SAR NEWS

PANAJI, Goa (SAR News) - The Catholic Church in Goa has lamented at the exploitation of press freedom, after the print and electronic media went to town over an alleged molestation by a Catholic priest in the confessional box on Christmas night.

Father Olavo Velho Pereira, spokesperson of the Archdiocese of Goa told SAR News August 25 that the media has blown the issue out of proportion, and "crucified" the priest in question without a "fair trial". On August 19, police registered a case of molestation
against Father Newton Rodrigues, parish priest of the Our Lady of  Help Church, Ribandar, Old Goa near here, after he was accused of molesting a 13-year-old girl, moments before midnight Mass last Christmas Eve .

However, police have refrained from arresting the priest fearing a backlash. Father Pereira said, the media as well as the church critics want prompt action on such issues, which are delicate and cannot be decided impromptu.

The victim, whose father is employed overseas, was scheduled to play the role of Mother Mary and went a few minutes early for the midnight Mass. At this point, Father Rodrigues reportedly asked the teenager whether she had confessed. Though her response was in the affirmative, the priest reportedly pressed for a confession afresh.

According to the girls uncle, Anthony Froys, the priest took her to the confessional, where he allegedly molested her.

The complaint however was first filed last week, by a Catholic activist-lawyer Aires Rodrigues, once a staunch disciple of Rajneesh.

Aires has in recent years been projecting himself in new light after he took several public-oriented causes and last year filed a public interest litigation in the High Court challenging the appointment of an RSS incumbent to the post of Director of Information. Later, however, he succumbed to RSS pressure and withdrew the petition.

In 2000, police records indicate that  the lawyer was 35th in the list of goondas, history sheeters and bad characters.

"Benefit of doubt ought to be given to the priest because of improbabilities. How would it be possible for the priest to molest moments before the midnight Mass. The complaint says that she was molested at 11.15 p.m. At that time, the priest was at the altar" said an agitated parishioner Michael Fernandes. "It means he molested her in full view of the
congregation" he added.

He said, "the complaint was lodged eight months after the episode and that too by a third party. Obviously, the complaint is orchestrated to get even with the priest, who has been turning down Aires suggestions for the parish".

The allegations against the priest appears to be made with vested interests, says M K Jos, an acerbic campaigner, who said the very background of the lawyer has vertically divided the parish, with a few supporting the priest, and others not certain where matters stand.

On August 21, some 350 parishioners went to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief minister Manohar Parrikar's residence and demanded action be initiated against Rodrigues and his associates for creating discord in the village.
The memo which targeted the advocate, accusing him of outraging the modesty of nuns of a nearby convent with abusive language and threats of rape, if the principal of the convent-run school was not transferred, according to his demand.

The following day, a meeting addressed by Aires evoked a response of about 75 parishioners. Referring to the abuse of Press freedom, Father Pereira pointed out that one daily carried a full page report on the "Ribandar Molestation Controversy" and went further on another page to publish a letter over the issue and the editor's response to the letter. The newspaper also carried an editorial, with the national media tom-toming the claims of Aires without any restrictions.

"It was as if it was fait accompli. In the eyes of the media, the priest was guilty. It is unfortunate that the media refused to discern claims, damn lies and potential reality" Father Pereira said. He lamented that the media went all out to make a fast buck at the cost of the sensitivity of the priest, without even waiting for the verdict from the Church authorities despite informing in a press note that the church was studying the issue.

He also regretted the attitude of "some individuals", calling a press conference and speaking to local TV news channels. "Natural justice would require that a proper inquiry be made into such accusations by the legitimate authorities, at their own pace. Instead, a total lack of seriousness and responsibility has been displayed by the signatory of the
letter, who, according to reliable sources, distributed copies of his letter to all the residents of Ribandar and to all and sundry at the Panjim Bus Stand".

Father Pereira said that in a prelude to the allegations, a vicious campaign was launched against the Sisters of Ajuda Convent, located near the parish, giving them intimidating threats and making frequent and obnoxious telephone-calls during the night.

Such behaviour reveals not only disrespect for consecrated life but lack of basic sensitivity to the dignity of women, which the letter writer is professing to defend. "His campaign has now moved to the parish priest, who had stood by the sisters in the hour of their affliction" said Father Pereira. Father Rodrigues rushed to the aid of the nuns following noctural telephonic calls of threat to rape the nuns, following Aires' demand to
transfer the school principal for sacking a school bus driver, who reportedly approached Aires for legal remedy.

HAMMERHEAD

Consider the Hammerhead Shark gliding ominously through the dark-blue ocean waters, its eyes placed far apart on a wide head for a wide range of vision, the ampullae of Lorenzini tuned in to detect very weak electrical fields - equivalent to an AA battery with terminals almost a mile apart – for an ability to detect prey buried in the ocean out of sight, a nose that has the ability to detect chemicals like blood in solution at concentrations as low as one part per million.

A Hammerhead swings its head from side to side like a metal detector to sample the water with its nose and will also swim in a zigzag pattern for miles tracking the scent of wounded prey, much in the same way a dog tracks a wild animal.

It has not a single bone in its body yet I don’t have to convince you of the strength in its jaws!

Though the hammerhead takes its name from its ‘hammer’ shaped head, I like to think of the hammerhead as a precision instrument of nature. A perfect ‘living’ machine with a tuning of senses as sharp as the finest guitar note. A creature that has a defined rhythm and beat to its life. The hammer behind the soft gloves of a boxer. A hammer for the nails on your coffin. You know you’re slugged when the hammerhead hits you!

Hammerhead comprises – Bosco (drums), Edwin (bass), Edward (guitars) and Rahul (vocals) -  four musicians, striving to make a difference, to bring new sounds with rock-funk-beat into the wide and deep ocean of music.

One of Hammerhead’s strongest features is its rock steady base held by drummer Bosco and bassist Edwin. The icing of notes, sprinkled on top comes from Edward’s lead guitar and Rahul’s rap and funk singing.

Originally all part of different bands Bosco (Napoleon’s Rocking Chair, Earth Stage, Mavericks, Satan’s Breakfast), Edwin (Satan’s Breakfast, N R C.), Edward (Soggy Biscuit, Blue Baby) and Rahul (Fetish Komb, Soggy Biscuit) gel together in Hammerhead with a promise for a brand new species of music.

As a nineteen foot long fish don’t expect the Hammerhead to go for the usual prey like Summer of 69 and Roadhouse Blues. No offense, but you can’t expect the Hammerhead to feed on seaweed, can you?

You must also know from the shape of its head that the Hammerhead is on a different trophic level altogether. Hammerhead thrives on Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Ozzy Osbourne, Tower of Power and the like. As a highly adaptable species, with a strong evolutionary history, Hammerhead will hopefully take to new bait and prey on original compositions also.

The more Hammerhead eats, the bigger and stronger it grows. Hammerhead would therefore like to thank band manager Ethel Da Costa for two big meals to be provided by her at Margao (at the Go-Karting centre in Nuvem) and Dona Paula (Club Villa Sol). Be there to watch the Hammerhead feast!

Hi Friends.

There seems to be a little disagreement and difference of opinion with regards to my usage of the HTML version of sending out the Creepy Times (in other words the flashy colorful design)

Some people prefer the text version as it takes a lot less space and is therefore a little faster while downloading. These persons are very few and I have therefore decided to continue sending the umm… flashy design out to the rest. If for some reason you prefer the text version as well let me know and I'll send you it.

Though Creepy Times was originally meant to be a weekly issue I am forced to reduce it to bimonthly now.

Know your snake

a baby Russell's Viper

Russell's viper. The snake is one of the four deadly snakes that causes many deaths in India and Goa . It is locally known as 'Ghonus'  or 'Kusdo'. The snake can be easily recognized by its distinct body pattern of circular or diamond shaped brownish markings all along its yellow body. Only one of the pictures is of an adult.

Myth; 'Kusdo'  is a Konkani word meaning the snake that causes rotting of the flesh.

Truth; The myth is partially true in that an untreated bite causes gangrene (and consequently, amputation of the limb becomes necessary). But a more dangerous effect of the bite is that the venom causes massive blood cell destruction, resulting in blood loss and finally heart failure. The bite can be effectively treated by administering anti snake venin available at all the hospitals in Goa .

Wild life celebrity

Neil Alvares (not my relative...)

Working with wildlife seven years till date Neil's interest and profession in this line started through a tourism venture. Along with partner in business Harvey D'Souza a boat was bought by Neil which cruised the mangrove areas of the Cumbarjua canal teeming with tourists all hoping to get a glimpse of the mugger crocodile that still survives there.

By the end of the year Neil had already started doing non profit trips for students interested as well. The trip highlights in addition to the spotting of crocodiles, is the vast biodiversity of birds that thrive there. I have personally been on a number of trips( that they never charged me for!) with them and got to see a lot of birds like the osprey, egrets, herons, four or five species of kingfishers, and many water birds- including migratory species that fly over from all parts of the world. The White Bellied Fishing Eagle is also a sight worth seeing as it glides through the air, a giant raptor searching for fish and sea snakes.

A few years down the line Harvey and Neil founded Southern Birdwing their very own NGO for conserving wildlife. Neil admits that the Forest Department also backed them up with a lot of support when they needed it.

The things that Neil likes about his profession are that he gets to see a lot of places all over Goa . ‘Plus you are always happy that your are not doing something that is damaging to the environment' he chuckles.

Neil feels that group rivalry among wildlife enthusiasts is the biggest setback to our efforts, and he firmly believes that in order to really make a difference when saving wildlife we need to push our differences aside and unite as one to succeed.

Caro amigo Sr Rego,

Thanks for you email. Actually, I am based in London and I do visit Portugal on average once a year. I used to live in Lisbon once upon a time.

I did mention Gavana as it was mispelt as 'Davana' by Mr da Cunha's email sent to you. I wasn't aware of the initial thread of conversation between you two.

Lata Mangueskar is a daughter of Goa, but I am not too sure if she is very keen in performing in Goa or for Goans. She was hurt in her past by Goans  (mostly politicians, bureaucrats) and ever since she turned her back on Goa. Not sure how many of you are aware of this.

Votos de um bom fim de semana.

Dear Willie
Thanks for your letter. After that ,  I sent a letter to Dr.Narana Coissoro, Pres. of Casa de Goa. to invite LATA MANGUESKAR  to perform in Lisbon under the auspices of Casa da Goa. I am sure that you will support my Suggestion.
It can be done with the financial help of Fundação Oriente and with the cooperation of the GOvt of India and the Govt of Goa
I am adding at cc the email of mr. Manohar Parriker the C.M. of Goa
Kind regards and to all of you: HAVE A GOOD SUNDAY
fERNANDO DO rEGO.

Dear Willie,
Thanks for the confirmation.Would it not be advisable that you rectify the news that you spraed in your entusiasm!? I was under the impression ( now I see that I was wrong) that  through you,the new Prez of the Casa de Goa, wanted to boast for being the first to invite a Goan singer to Portugal.
I hope he invites another Goan of world fame to sing in Portugal; LATA MANGUESHKAR! It appears to me that you have influence in the new Comitee. Try to get this suggestion to go ahead.
Regards
Fernando

Ex.mo Sr.

Doutor Narana Coissoro M.P.

Presidente da Casa de Goa

Lisboa

Saturday, August 07, 2004   19:00:24

Presado Sr. Doutor Coissoro

Sou filho do Dr.Antonio Augusto do Rego e irmão do Dr. João Filipe do Rego, que talvez tenha conhecido pessoalmente.

Perguntaste-me naquele dia

FERNANDO DO REGO.

Dear Mr.Da Cunha
I was glad to read the news. But I think that there is a small mistake which you can check: the very much Goan group called "GAVANA' gave shows in Lisbon some years back, though it might not have been at Casa de Goa.And Remo Fernandes? did he never visit Portugal with his group?

Welcome to the Purple Valley Yoga Centre ...

'Where yoga enthusiasts and their friends gather to practise,
study, teach, chat and relax in a delightful tropical environment'

Purple Valley Yoga Centre is situated in North Goa, on the Western coast of India, and has two locations:

Our first location is the Purple Valley Drop-In Centre, where you can just go along without booking for yoga classes seven days each week, with top quality teachers in an inspiring location. Although we specialise in Ashtanga yoga we also offer general hatha classes.

Find out more about the Purple Valley Drop-In Centre, or book a Package Deal of accommodation, unlimited yoga and airport transfers, by clicking here. If you are in Goa, and want to know how to find Purple Valley, visit our map page.

Our second location about 3kms away, the Purple Valley Retreat, is located off a quiet secondary back road in Assagao, about 2kms from the main town of Mapusa. There is a purpose-built shala for approximately 40 mats situated at the bottom of a private valley, among teak trees, palms and banana trees. The area is peaceful with landscaped gardens, trees, birds and butterflies. There is residential accommodation for 30 students, with terracing overlooking the shala valley. The location is peaceful, tropical and very safe. There are communal areas for meeting and chatting, and private corners for private time and meditation. It is ideal for a yoga retreat.

All teachers at Purple Valley follow the yogic teachings of Shri T. Krishnamacharya whose direct students include Shri K.Pattabhi Jois, Shri.B.K.S. Iyengar and Shri.T.K.V. Desikachar.

The Purple Valley Drop-In Yoga Centre now offers Yoga Teacher Training. If you are interested in training to be a yoga teacher, please click kere for further details.

Purple Valley is committed to working closely with the local community and has various initiatives which benefit our workers, their families and the local Goans. A percentage of our profits is given back to the community, and we have adopted European standards in our employment practices. We are also developing 'green' initiatives and eco-friendly strategies. Click here for details of the Purple Valley Ethos.

Yoga Workshops at Purple Valley ...

This is our schedule of workshops for the upcoming 2004/05 season.

T-BUSH : Goa’s Budding Movie Maker .

By Wellington Dias.
dwelly@...
wellydias@...

T-BUSH, from Nagoa, Verna, Goa, being interested in art since childhood is planning to embark on his long cherished dream of pursuing a career in film making.

With a Bahelor’s degree in Fine Art, majoring in audio-visuals through the Goa University, India and not content to rest on his laurels, he recently completed a Diploma in Film Making through the London Film School in the United Kingdom, with the main intention of being in the movie making business.
T-BUSH’s, short English film entitled, THE LETTER , is currently in production.

T-BUSH, over the years has contributed a lot of behind the scene support to many Konkani dramatists with his audio-visuals, etc.
Now, he is all set to produce his dream project - ADEUS, MY LOVE, a full length silver-screen Konkani film (not a video film)

From what, I have been given to understand by T-BUSH, the film shoot’s locales are to be based in Goa, London, Portugal & France and presently, is on the look-out for the film’s cast .

For more details about T-BUSH and his work, kindly visit his homepage at the following URL :-

  www.t-bush.com

Or  contact him at :

  films@...

Seeing the zest & drive in T-BUSH and also the work being put in by him, I hope he is successful in his efforts.

A detailed article shall follow later

The Creepy Times Issue 6 newsletter by Rahul Alvares

Hi friends

It has been a while since I have last sent you an issue. Many things have happened in the last two weeks and Creepy Times took a severe bashing which it very nearly did not recover from.

For one thing my computer hard disk crashed. All my articles that I had written over the last five months nearly got wiped out! Luckily technicians in Bombay managed to salvage a lot from the drives and I have got almost all my articles back. Cost me three and a half thousand!

Moral of the story; Please please have a back up to all your important documents on a CD, paper or the internet. For God's sake don't rely on the damn computer.

Rahul

Featured Article: Know your Snake: Saw Scaled Viper

The snake in the picture is known as the Saw Scaled Viper and is one of the four main venomous snakes of India . The snake probably causes the maximum number of bites in India too. It has an extremely volatile temper and is supposed to be one of the most aggressive snakes in the whole of Asia .

Notice clearly the arrow shaped mark on the head.

Myth: The snake is known in Konkani as ' Phoorse' and is supposed to be able to jump six feet high while striking its enemy.

Truth: No snakes can jump. The snake grows to not more than ten to twelve inches in length. Like all vipers it bears live young and the reason it is known as the saw scaled viper is because of the sound it makes by rubbing its body scales against each other producing a faint sawing like sound when alarmed.
