The UNL weeds group, in collaboration with Conservation Survey, put
together a simple groundwater vulnerability to pesticides map for NE (see
county samples at bottom of
<http://csd.unl.edu/csd/pestguides/pest.htm>). The inputs were STATSGO
texture and depth to groundwater.
In our efforts to regionalize the DSS, Weedsoft
(<http://weedsoft.unl.edu>), other states have requested similar
maps. However, I have not found a consistent source of depth to
groundwater data for the states in question (plains and midwest). Where I
have found a depth to groundwater surface, it has been derived in one of
two ways... interpolating well water data (i.e. subsurface geology is not
taken into account), or a model generated by expert knowledge (i.e. people
knowledgeable in subsurface geology AND well water depths have put together
a model). I favor the latter approach - especially at the state
scale. Bottom line... Does anyone have a list of depth to groundwater data
surfaces and their metadata?
Secondly, we want to produce a similar model for surface water
contamination. We'd like to keep it simple, but we might incorporate gross
chemistry effects. NE's SSURGO database should be complete soon, so we're
interested in working at both the state and county scales. I'm looking for
suggestions on which surface water models might work for this GIS
project. EPA's BASIN model comes with input data and I've been told that
it might work for our needs. Thoughts?
