Training Programme on COASTAL HYDROLOGY
14th – 26th Dec. 2009
Jointly organized by
Center for Hydrology and Groundwater Resource Management
Andhra University
Visakhapatnam – 530 003 (India)
and
Deltaic Regional Centre
National institute of Hydrology
Kakinada 533 003 (India)
The concept
The recent spurt in the use of groundwater resources in industrial and
agricultural sectors has mounted enormous pressure under water resources system.
Urban conglomerates especially the coastal belts, being highly fragile, are
under a critical situation with respect to their availability of quality natural
hazards like storm surges, tidal waves, tsunamis, though apparently rare, causes
a long standing impacts on various aspects of coastal hydrology. The
exponential growth in agriculture sector with an unprecedented increase in the
use of groundwater for irrigation supplemented by multi-storied residential
complexes all along the coastal regions of the country, have resulted in a
permanent damage to the coastal aquifer systems almost to a point of no return.
Having realizing the urgent need to address such problems and provide trained
manpower, the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India has
supported an organization of training programme on Coastal Hydrology to provide
a comprehensive knowledge on thee coastal hydrological systems and the
associated field and laboratory techniques that can be of vital use in the
exploration development and management of coastal water resources. Apart from
providing the basic concepts in the coastal hydrological systems and process
response parameters exploration techniques involving geophysical, nuclear, RS
techniques and GIS applications will be provided during the training. In thee
process of data processing and interpretation algorithm used in groundwater
model studies and their implications will be given significant important to
expose the participants to the field conditions. A field trip to visit and
study the coastal environments with reference to the groundwater systems will be
organized in Kakinada region.
Course content
The general aspects of groundwater in relation to Coastal systems are adequately
delt with including practicals. The course includes field trips to the coastal
environments and rock formations.
The major topics that are covered:
• Coastal hydrology and processes
• Geophysical, Isotope, RS and GIS applications
• Data processing and groundwater modeling
• Interface of fresh and saline waters
• Field trip: Groundwater conditions for the quality and quantity in coastal
environments.
Faculty
Experts from Central Groundwater Board, NIO, NGRI, GSI, AP State Groundwater
Board, National Institute of Hydrology, Andhra University and Industry will be
the faculty.
